[Column] General: The March Against Violent Videogames

"Violent video games are only OK if they are used to recruit your kids to kill people we don't like." http://www.army.mil/article/12072/army-experience-center-opens-in-philadelphia/ I wish the Government would focus on the real problems instead of diverting our attention to an easy scapegoat. |

[Column] World of Warcraft: Adventuring With Others
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/15/13 9:09:23 AM
Great article and advice. Ive played most MMOs, and WoW has a some of the best (and worst) people/community out there. I've had more random interaction and questing with strangers in WoW than any other game. I've recently started to tank, and I won't start a dungeon until I greet everyone. I try to talk throughout, and make sure no one is being overwhelmed. Most people respond very positively. I love meeting people in the world and throwing random emotes at them, shooting a whisper about their cool mount, buffing them, starting small talk as we fish, giving them a drink from the bar, etc. Many people don't respond, but the when someone does, great times often develop. Cross server really brought life into the game, its just a shame you can't share items with them, etc. |

City of Heroes: Gamers Rally to Save City of Heroes
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/07/12 9:38:50 AM
I'm not a fan of the game, but I signed the petetion. I feel for the community and hope they will be able to save their game. It's a shame that they won't allow the community to at least run private servers if nothing else. Best of luck!

TERA: Island of Dawn Trailer Released
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 4/20/12 9:55:47 PM
The new starter prologue is a big improvement and should give new player a taste of what to expect once they get to level 20+ EnMassee is doing a great job listening to it's customers and making changes. I suggest playing in a group as much as possible for the most enjoyment. |

Nice video, it looks like they came up with an interesting concept in this game. I have to admit I've never heard of this IP however. Wikipedia here I come. |

TERA: Saleron’s Sky Garden Preview

Kantseeme I wasn't trying to be holier than thou or criticize your play style, but to offer a suggestion to the complaints you brought up. I'm sorry if you took it in any other way. You are more than welcome to play any style of game you like, but not in TERA. If you do not like the action style combat then you are correct, the game is not for you. I was only suggesting you try out those other games I mentioned and invest a little time to learn a new style of gameplay, as you might find out, with a little paitence, that you actually like it. I hated anything but tab target, but finally forced myself to expand a little and discovered I enjoyed it. You can't be enlightined if you refuse to try. Just saying. I wish you luck with your next tab target game, there are plenty of them for you to enjoy. Cheers! |

TERA: Saleron’s Sky Garden Preview

Katseeme you don't need to mouse over anything to know you need to debuff someone, all you need to know is presented to you visually. For example if someone is poisioned their health bar over their head will turn purplish instead of blue, so you need to cast a cure. I highly suggest you read up on it a bit and give it another try. Perhaps practice this style of combat by playing some Dragon Nest or Vindictus. They are similar enough to get you used to this style of combat. It took me some time to figure this new system out, but it's well worth the extra time it takes to learn it. |

Originally posted by Aethaeryn @Aethaeryn I know this is a horrible answer, but you can't judge the game based on the starter zone, except for the fact that it's beautiful. :) I myself normally roll my eyes when I hear someone tell me this, but it IS true in this case. The quests are very linear and honestly they are boring and useless IMHO. I am one who enjoys questing and even (gasp) reading the text, but I admit I tend to run to hub, accept all quests without reading, kill x or y, and continue on, in this game. I look at them as just good way to get XP. You can't leave the starter zone until level 11, and you must do at least your story quests to leave. I've had to do the starter zone around 5 times now, which you can grind it out in about two-three hours. It is good in that it teaches you the basic concepts of the game, but most of us already understand how to play, so it seems like a real drag. I would even go so far as to say that the game doesn't start to shine until around level 20 (I was able to grind that out in half a day with a group of 3). You do get a free mount after leaving the island, so that's a big plus, and makes the HUGE world easier to navigate. At around level 20 most of your quests suggest 5 persons to complete, and include your first dungeon and your first BAM. My first BAM was really exciting, because my group didn't realize it was a BAM and just charged in, wondering why it hit sooo hard. We were only 3, all healers, so it took a long time, but man was it fun. Healing in this game is refreshing, you are actually engaged during battles, vs. only watching the health bars. You have one lock on heal (you can lock onto two people at once) and your other heals are aoe circles you throw on the ground (as a priest). Mystic can throw healing and mana orbs on the ground that anyone can pick up when they need to re-up. I played a sorc, archer, priest and slayer, I don't normally play mele classes, but they really shine in this game I think. The world is completly open after leaving the island, so the quests are divided into hubs, but you have a little more freedom to pick and choose where to quest, and you can go anywhere in the game at that point, if you can survive.

@Entropy14 I think you are correct about the fact that they try to make it easy for players who are new to this style of combat. I played with some players this past test who had alot of problems with the combat, so for people like them I'm sure it doesn't seem too easy. I wish they would make it optional after playing it once, much like Champions Online did for their tutorial section. I like to roll alts, but it's painful to have to spend 2-3 hours grinding this zone to get to the real game. It is a beautil zone however. I also wish you could choose to repeat the only fun quest in the zone, where you have to defend the bridge at Tainted Gorge. They need more quests like that, fast, fun, and continuous action. Perhaps a few BAM's in IoD as well. |
