DOFF system.  Free, huge, and a lot of fun as they add Chains and other rewards.  Innovative within the genre as well.

If you define "fun" as mindlessly clicking a button without having to go anywhere or do anything, then yes, I would agree the DOFF system is "fun".

Access to tons of user-generated missions.  Free, and a feature that players enjoy.

Cryptic did not make any of those UGC missions, so with regard to the "steady flow of updates" this part of your argument is extremely weak.

There's been more added than that since the start of Season 5 - why try to make it look otherwise?

Sure, if you count C-Store items as "content", then yes, Cryptic has cranked out "content" at breakneck speed.  If you consider "content" as something other than UGC or brainless button clicking (eg. DOFF system), they have done very little.

Originally posted by Rohn

There's been a pretty good rate of content release over the last few months, which is a good thing.

Such as?  1 FE series that took over a year to get out?  I would not categorize that as a "good rate" by any stretch of the imagination.

To comapre, Paragon Studios has done far better with releasing regular content updates with a staff of comparable size to Cryptic (   They also continued to release content updates while converting the game into a F2P model.

I would also take any statement about Fleet Starbases with a grain of salt.  I can say from experience from City of Heroes that no matter what system they come up with for Fleets (as with Supergroups in CoH), it will not be fair to fleets of all sizes and types.  I will almost guarantee that Fleet starbases will involve a grind that will make the STF grind for MK XII gear pale in comparison.

Some of the things DStahl promised in the past did come to fruition, others didn't.  Everyone can make up their own mind on what sounds plausible.

Atari stripped the STO development team to bare bones.  I also think it's reasonable to believe that the sale of Cryptic to PWE, and subsequent directive to transition to F2P, would be a tumultuous time that would interfere with some of the direction they had wanted to go in.

Yes, people can use their own judgement.  History is a good indicator of what they can expect to see going forward and to take everything posted with a grain of salt.  I also do not buy the whole "blame Atari for everything" story.  You are also kidding yourself if you believe Cryptic had no intentions of taking STO F2P very early on.

Atari "stripping the staff" and the whole "staff smaller than a starbucks" commentary does not hold much water either.  Paragon Studios has a comparable sized staff and they have managed to push out regular content updates for years prior to taking City of Heroes F2P ( ).

The PWE acquisition has been done for a while now.  What have you seen?  New content?  Yes.  The majority of which is all C-Store fluff.  Cryptic has made it clear they consider the Foundry to "fill content gaps" .

Cryptic is not fooling anyone.

I think it is a good step in direction of having a more valuable ship interior. What I found more interesting in the dev blog is this:

"At the respective factions’ academies, Personnel Officers allow a captain to commission cadres of duty officers, and also to turn in five underperforming duty officers, plus a modest amount of Dilithium, for a random duty officer of the next highest quality. Too many duty officers of common (white) quality? Turn them in for uncommon (green) quality duty officers!"

I've been waiting on this. If the dilithium cost is not overly high, this will be a good way to clean up the crew a bit.

You already get a modest amount of Dilithium and points if you dismiss a DOFF.  This is not anything particularly new.

No offense to Dan Stahl as he is the most communicative of any EP STO had.  However, he is well known for making lofty claims and never following through.

Take a read here  That article is not conjecture, it has the Devs own posts to back it up.  You will find Dan made quite a few promises that were never kept.

I will not get my hopes up for this.  As you say, it is a step in the right direction, albeit more of a tiny tip toe to be realistic.  From the sound of it, these new officers do not offer anything that does not already exist in game.  For example, I have dozens of torepedo turrets that were built by DOFF missions already.  All they did was add in a person to click on instead of an icon in the UI.

Some things to consider;

  1. To use these new contacts, you will need to beam up/down to use them adding yet another load screen
  2. I am the Captain of the ship.  Why do I have to go see them and not the other way around?  They should be reporting to me on the bridge or in my ready room
  3. You still cannot customize the uniform of your non-BOFF crew
  4. These are not really the functionality the customers have been asking for since day one, such as;
    1. Treat injuries in sick bay
    2. Repair or improve your ship in Engineering
    3. Craft items instead of having to visit Memory Alpha
    4. Access to email, banks and the exchange

These new officers sound ok, but nothing to get overly excited about.  From the blog, it just sounds like adding NPCs to click instead of the UI button.  Color me unimpressed.

But you can part with real cash to buy a C-Store ship now!

Thoughtful review.  You hit on the major points and even though you are only level 10, you have a good idea of what the rest of the game has to offer.  There is not much else different as you go higher up in rank.

Just about all the items you noted as improvements have been brought up to Cryptic ad nauseum.  They seem to have a canned response of "the time and cost involved wouldn't make it worth us doing it", meaning we will never see them in game.  To be fair, they have made some improvements that have been very good (eg. the sector space revamp), however things like a seamless world / space are unlikely to ever happen.  Cryptic's core engine cannot handle it.

Very interesting and IMO telling read over at the STO forums  The OP asked the question;

"The PW sale has come and gone. F2P launch has come and gone. The new FE series has come and gone. So what is the plan now? What new things are going to be added for people to DO in game? How long before the next playable content? What about after that? What is the team's goal as far as how often new playable content will be released?"
It has been very interesting and telling to read the Dev replies here as to what they consider "content".
IMO this post ( sums up STO and Cryptic's attitude toward the game perfectly.
"I've been wondering the same, actually. Don't get me wrong, I love the interesting things the Duty Officer system provides - AND the Featured Episodes (on the rare occasion we have one). But, there's more to the Star Trek universe - both in game and not yet in game - that has been as yet untapped (or, in other cases, promised and hinted at) but never followed up.

I remember seeing the big Iconian ship come in and going LOLNOOB (not a direct quote), blowing up an enemy ship, threatening me with wrath and disappearing. Okay, that was neat. Unexpected, but neat. The gate story arc related to that was over a year ago. Can we follow up with that?

The disconnect, I think, is that the devs see they are producing content and they're right. But, they're not necessarily producing thought provoking or long-term engaging content (episodes, arcs, missions) but instead short-term gratification content (pets, lockboxes, ships).

And, Bran, you know I respect you dearly. So, you know I'm not being offensive when I say that what we're really needing here is something that brings the Trek back to STO. It shouldn't take Featured Episodes to keep us busy for a short period of time. The Duty Officer system, in my view, is a crutch. There's 50+ years of Trek material to draw from in a story driven way. What's more is that the game has its own history following 'canon'. Working on that would be far more meaningful and thought provoking than a pet, a ship, or a useless trinket forgotten about six hours or six days from now.

I'd like to see more of the Iconians. More of the Guardian of Forever type stories. I can dredge up vast numbers of things that could open up story lines. I am only one person. There's a team at Cryptic. Surely there must be a way to come up with much more than I could conceive.

Gene Roddenberry often commented that Trek was a morality play. A way to tell stories to deal with current social issues in a science fiction setting. Let's put more of those plays in game."
The key parts have been bolded and underlined for emphasis.   IMO the person who posted that is spot on about STO and the attitude the Devs seem to have for it.    To me, they have yet to develop any "hooks" to keep you playing in the long term.    Since it went F2P, you are seeing quite a few folks praising the game early on, only to get bored and drop it within a months time (even less for some).
Sad as it is to say, I do not see this changing anytime soon.

Congrats on making VA.  Your options now are;

  1. Run foundry content
  2. Roll a Klingon and re-play most all the same content you just ran on your Federation character
  3. Grind STFs endlessly
  4. Grind dilithium
  5. Find another MMO

The MACO and OMEGA sets are nowhere near as good as they are hoped to be.   None of them are worth the effort needed to get them IMO.

Short answer?  Yep.

Welcome to STO.

Originally posted by ChromeBallz

How much of it is p2w, if anything at all? Is there more to the game now than ship and ground combat?

In terms of ships, it can be P2W.  They did add in a Duty Officer (DOFF) system to send "away teams" on various assignments.  It is essentially just a click through that yield a reward.  The rewards are xp, dilithium, crafting samples etc.  Think of it as a farmville for STO.  Other than that, it is still just space or ground combat.

Originally posted by Robsolf

It IS better.  I have no shortage of posts ripping on what STO did and didn't do, but I'm willing to say that for free, it's a pretty good game.  Still wouldn't pay a sub, but the free model gets you a game well worth playing.

I agree.  STO is ok now that it can be played for free.  I would not recommend paying for anything at this point as the paid content is not all that good.  For free, you should get a week or so amount of fun out of it.

Yes , by all means I want to spend money for an end game costume change , and another possible ship slot , for the 4 new hours of content that Cryptic has added to the game in the last year and some months.  /sarcasm off

This is precisely the problem with Cryptic it's all about the C-store and getting the player base to spend spend and spend , while the same playerbase creates the content and Cryptic sits on it's hands hoping no-one will notice it's doing nothing.

The C-Store versions are a little more than just a skin.  The console slots, additional abilities and turn rate make it far superior to the free version they gave out.

I do agree with you that these are a waste of money as there is no real content designed for these +1 ships.  IMO it is more than high time to start putting some of those C-Store profits back into the game and cranking out the non-C Store content.

All of the 3 part engine/deflector/sheild sets change how your ship looks.

Some times, not always.  From the look of the posted pic, it is the Reman shields given as a reward in one of the mission of the Romulan FE.

Different set pieces (or as Jounar posted, completing a whole set) will also have different visual effects.   The Borg, OMEGA FORCE and M.A.C.O. sets are the prime ones.  Each piece (shields, deflector, engines) will have a different visual effect on your ship.  These include skin/armor, warp trail color, warp nacelle color, deflector piece etc.

If you do not like the  visuals a piece gives your ship, simply right click on it in your info window and select "Disable Visuals".  This will work for body armor as well.

From a purely canonical standpoint, shuttlecraft often had max speeds of Warp 2.

Often, not always.  Trek loves to contradict itself to suit the story.

Originally posted by WhiteLantern

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I thought the original comment was about faster, like at full impulse or warp; i.e. getting from here to there.

Which if this is the case, I would agree with your earlier comment.  None of my shuttles go faster than any of my other ships either.   The OP needs to clarify.

Details for the C-Store Odyssey Class have been posted;

To  repost from the blog;

"The pinnacle of Federation starship design, the Advanced Odyssey Cruisers improve on the base Odyssey Star Cruiser design, with improved Bridge Officer seating, console slots and special abilities.

The Advanced Odyssey Cruisers include the Odyssey Tactical Cruiser, Odyssey Operations Cruiser and Odyssey Science Cruiser. Like the base model, the Advanced Odyssey Cruisers are the largest vessels ever created by Starfleet. Their massive size makes them very resilient, but their turn rate is reduced by their bulk.

The Odyssey's unique split saucer pylon reduces subspace turbulence, which allows higher warp speeds and increases the length of time that the ship can maintain Slipstream Drive. The Advanced Odyssey Cruisers are designed as extreme long-range vessels, and can operate for long periods of time away from support. Because of this, they are the most versatile cruisers ever developed by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. All three feature Universal Lieutenant Commander and Universal Ensign Bridge Offer Stations that can by operated by any Bridge Officer class!

Each Advanced Odyssey Cruiser comes with its own special console. These consoles may be equipped on any of the Advanced Odyssey Cruisers in any console slot, and each is part of the Odyssey Set. While they may not be equipped on the standard Odyssey Cruiser or any other ship, the 3-piece set bonus decreases the recharge time of all Odyssey console abilities. It also improves your Starship EPS, Starship Hull Plating, and Starship Armor Reinforcements Skills. Finally, this bonus also slightly increases your Odyssey's Turn Rate.

All three Advanced Odyssey Cruisers will be available in the C-Store for individual sale (2000 Cryptic Points) or as a 3-pack bundle (4000 Cryptic Points).

Odyssey Operations Cruiser:

The Odyssey Operations Cruiser features a bonus engineering console slot (for a total of 10 console slots). It comes equipped with a Chevron Separation universal console module. This console allows you to separate your Odyssey's chevron saucer and stardrive sections. The saucer will follow you and attack your targets. You pilot the stardrive section, which gains a boost to weapons power and increased speed and maneuverability.
