I wish I could say I find this surprising, but unfortunately I do not.  The "smaller than a Starbucks" team just got a lot smaller, so those holding out for great improvements to STO should not be holding their breath IMO.

I wish them both the best of luck on their future endeavours.

Actually, no it did not. The cash shop is there for no other purpose othern than to make cash. Period. Items from the store that are available through "grinding" are priced in such a way as to make it more convenient to spend the cash instead of the time. Cryptic/PWE are banking on the bet that players would rather spend the funds right now than grind for months on end.

And I'll reply to any posts I like, thanks.

The fact that they give you alternatives to spending actual cash derails your entire argument.

No, it does not. To put it in more simple terms for you, would you rather hit yourself in the head with a hammer repeatedly for a month to get an item from the Cash Shop for free or would you rather plunk down cash for it and avoid the hammer? The game is F2P, which means Cryptic/PWE will push cash shop sales to fund the game. This is not rocket science.

I am sorry, but you are vilifying Cryptic for something you simply don't understand (and quite frankly, you should be ashamed of yourself for doing so).

I understand it quite well, thanks. The intent is to get you to part with your cash, plain and simple.

As I said before, there is no reason to even try to villify Cryptic. They villify themselves on their own quite well.

Now, which method do I think Cryptic encourages?  Well, if they wanted to make it so that only paying players could make foundary missions, then they wouldn't put foundary slots in the Dilithium store, now wouldn't they?

Were Cryptic to make it where it took all of 5 minutes of gameplay to earn enough dilithium to buy something in the store such as a UGC slot, they would not make any money as everyone would grind dilithium.

The level of effort/time required to grind out enough dilithium for the items you want is purposely designed to be overly time prohibitive as to entice you to spend the cash instead.

There is no reason for any of us here to try and vilify Cryptic. Cryptic themselves do a good enough job of that on their own.

In game Dilithium isn't money.  It is possible to create foundary missions by buying slots to create foundary missions with Dilithium.  Therefore, Cryptic isn't forcing you to pay money to create your own content, just making it an alternative option to playing numerous missions to gather enough Dilithium to make your own content.

Your argument has been tried before and fortunately, most are able to see through the snakeoil sale.

Sure, you can farm Dilithium for a few weeks/months (depending on playstyle) to buy a Foundry slot, or you can plunk down the cash and get the slot immediately. Which do you think Cryptic encourages?

Originally posted by MadDemon64 It is stated quite clear in the f2p matrix that gold players can create up to 8 foundary missions at a time and unlock more slots to make more of them with either real cash or in game currency, and silver players have to buy the slots with either real cash or in game currency in order to start making foundary missions.

Underlined for emphasis. Cryptic is still charging money to build content, no matter how you slice it. Why anyone would pay real money to write content for a content starved game is beyond me. Especially those stupid enough to be a gold subber.

Ok then, but just remember that now that you know that there are foundary missions out there that are being added every day, and that a good chunk of them are of high quality, you and everyone reading this can no longer complain about a lack of (quality) content in the game.

Yes, I can continue to complain. I can still say there is a lack of quality content in STO. "Quality" is a subjective term. One man's quality is the next man's crap. I know from my own personal experience that for every 1 decent mission added to STO via UGC, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of garbage missions added. I do not want nor do I have any desire to spend limited gameplay time sifting through nonsense player created content to find a possible gem. This holds no interest for me. Kudos to those people out there that enjoy UGC and have fun playing it. It is not for everyone.

Which is why I recommended "A Will and a Barclay".  That particular episode uses the history correctly, or at least as correctly as any trekkie would want.  Add to that the fact that it is at times hilarious, and you have an excellent mission.

Pass. Not interested in the least.

And that my friend is why the foundary exists.  If you think there is a lack of content, then make your own content.

No thank you. I have had the displeasure of trying a few of the UGC missions in STO and was very unimpressed. The decent ones are very few and very far between. Personally, I enjoy a consistent storyline that progresses in an MMO. People/places/races/Trek "history" are handled differently from author to author and is immersion breaking.

I'm sorry, but I have a real hard time taking your statement seriously when Neverwinter won awards at both E3 and PAX.

Utterly meaningless.  STO won "Best New MMO of 2010" or some other such nonsense.  It is (IMO) the worst MMO on the market, so awards and accolades do not amount to much.

Sorry to hear about your experience with customer support.  As someone who has played STO since BETA, I can honestly tell you that support does not get any better.  There are many bugs in STO since BETA that have not been addressed.  As you found out, these kinds of issues are relegated to the back burner in favor of cranking out cash shop content by the ton.

I will say 16 hours is a rather quick response time for Cryptic.  The average time in my experience is well over 3 days for a reply.

I really like the Defera invasion zone, hopefully this one will be very similar.

Sounds like nothing but a re-skin of the same content.  Instead of the Borg on Defera, it will be a random race.  Pass.

Sounds like this confirms there will be no further development on STFs or other endgame content for those not interested in the Fleet advancement system.

The "operational assets" also sound reminiscent of the failed "Items of Power" forced PvP system they tried with bases in City of Heroes.

And as predicted, not everyone will want to be forced into a fleet http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=272869 and http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=272711

But I do agree, there's nothing wrong with requiring a group effort to achieve group-based goals.  In an MMO, it should be expected.

No one said otherwise. The caution is in what size group they are targetting for these. A fleet of 2 or 3 people is a group, just as a fleet of 500 or more. Should these be designed for the latter when the majority of fleets are small in roster, Cryptic made a design mistake.

This is essentially what happened with Supergroup bases in City of Heroes.

"Grind" is in the eye of the beholder.

Hey, if you feel that running the Elite STFs thousands of times on the off chance you might get a drop to get a gear set is not a grind, more power to you.  Safe bet that Starbases are going to be a similar level of effort.   Who knows?  Maybe they will offer Tier 5 bases in a lockbox?

Not everyone needs to lord their in-game goodies over others.

Small casual guilds aren't prohibited from the content, but it's going to take them a lot longer given their playstyle choice.  There's nothing wrong with it.

So if it were to take the small fleets years to obtain what a large fleet can in months, that is acceptable?  I think not.

You are kidding yourselves if you believe this will be anything but another drawn out, overly repetitive grind.

Why do small or casual fleets deserve to be on par with larger or more active fleets?MMOs are supposed to be games in which the community matters.

Small groups are part of the community too, therefore they matter. They matter just as much as the larger groups do to the overall health of a game. The whole concept of "bigger is better" failed in Cryptic's previous attempt with "group content" like bases in City of Villains. STO is not going to be any different.

The failure had already begun when the Cryptic folk (forget who it was in specific) first mentioned starbases "could cost 500 million EC or more". This was just a passing comment about some early level discussions and far before any real work had begun on bases. What did you see in game? Fleets recruiting "mules" and adding a "membership dues/tax" that had to be paid daily/weekly/monthly or you would get kicked from the group.

Be prepared for this to get much worse in STO now.

Cannot say I find this to be impressive at all.  You can tell this tiered system is already a failure.

I would bet small, casual fleets will not be able to afford the larger tiered bases which will in turn hurt their ability to recruit new people.  Guaranteed these will cost huge sums of Dilithium, Lobi or whatever other garbage currency Cryptic dreams up to pay for them, leading to fleets recruiting folks to work as "mules" rather than genuinely wanting to grow their fleet.

EDIT:  Looks like I was right... http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/04/captains-log-an-exclusive-look-at-stos-season-six-starbases/

Some key excerpts to focus on;

"Fleet advancement has been designed for fleets of all sizes, although there will exist "advantages and disadvantages depending on the size of [the] fleet's membership."

Meaning large fleets will have a clear advantage over smaller ones.

According to Cryptic, starbase development will involve several steps:

  1. Gather the resources necessary for various Fleet Projects.
  2. Individual members contribute resources to a Fleet Project, gaining individual Fleet Merits commensurate to the individual's contribution.
  3. When a Fleet Project meets the resource requirements, it will begin construction, whereupon the next queued Fleet Project will become available for contributions by fleet members.
  4. When a Fleet Project's build-time completes, the effects of the project will appear. In addition, fleet experience points in the related category may include buffs, limited quantities of unique ships and equipment in fleet stores, new contacts and functionality on the Starbase interior, improved starbase defensive capabilities, and other possible effects.
  5. When enough fleet experience points have been accrued in one of the three categories (Military, Engineering, Science) to attain the next development tier for that category, special upgrade Fleet Projects will become available.
  6. Completing one of the special upgrade projects will advance the associated facility (Shipyard, Industrial Fabricator, Communications Array, or the Starbase itself) to the next tier.

This is essentially what Cryptic tried in City of Heroes when they released bases along with City of Villains.  It did not work there and this is not going to work here.

Also, item 1 is exactly what I was referring to with fleets recruiting "mules".

Make no mistake, their new Neverwinter game is going to have lockboxes from day 1, it will have the same piss-poor engine like CO/STO, they will offer Lifetime-subs for the ones who left their brain in a chest somewhere, they will also complain about the size of their dev-team and how they wanted to do this and that, but didn't because they're incompetent pieces of ----.

This would be my guess. I would also wager Neverwinter will have piddly amounts of real quest content and will rely heavily on "user generated content" to "fill the content gaps".
