More evidence that the "all they do is lockboxes" is dishonest.

Who is being dishonest? Please show me where I specifically posted "Cryptic adds NOTHING ever except lockboxes."

Were Cryptic to put as much effort into making decent episodic content and fleshing out the game as they put into developing new lockboxes, the game would not be as content starved as it has been since launch.

And since you will try to distort what I posted here, I am not saying Cryptic never adds any new content to the game. They do. It is mostly boring, repetitive and grindy crap that they have recycled, but they do add it.

This is just one small example that points out the dishonesty of the message commonly found here.

How do you figure? And who is being dishonest? Please link to any post you can find here where I expressly state "Cryptic makes absolutely NO CONTENT at all OTHER THAN lockboxes or C-Store items." No amount of fairy dust sprinkling or wishful thinking is going to make such a post magically appear.

The winter event is ok, but it is mostly a rehash of what was done for the past 2 years. Honestly, it adds little more than a few minutes of grind to an already grind saturated game.

Another thing to keep in mind is to choose one damage type and stick to it.  I would not recommend trying to do a blend (eg. Phaser and Plasma or Tetyron and Disruptor etc.).

To be more accurate, the original rewards will be available for this.  The Featured Episodes themselves can be replayed anytime.  You would just not get the original reward set with them.

[mod edit]

All weapons do the same base damage.  The only difference between each "type" (eg. Phaser, Polaron, Tetryon, Disruptor etc.) is the secondary effect.

For example, Plasma weapons have a chance to  do minor DoT plasma fire damage.  Phasers have a chance to disable a sub-system for a few seconds, Tetryon reduces shield energy etc.

It's odd that you consider their western CoH servers to be their 'core product/service' or the source of their steady revenue stream ...

And I said this where?  I was speaking in hypotheticals, not stating fact for NCSoft.  Reading comprehension goes a long way.

And you still replied with it... even throwing in the "pull in the WoW numbers" strawman for extra effect. How are you a NYer and this is foreign to you? This makes me sad in the pants. :(

Huh?  Your reply does not make much sense.  Most businesses do have and maintain a core product/service that they will keep in order to maintain a steady revenue stream.  This is not rocket science.  Perhaps start your own business sometime and you will gain a better perspective.

I am not going to say NCSoft should keep CoH going.  It is their property and they can do with it as they want and there is not much anyone can do about it.  Would I have liked to have seen it continue?  Sure.  Am I going to cry over it, no.

"How does an omnipotent being improve on something that’s already perfect? Foolish mortal – omnipotent beings don’t need to follow the rules of mortal logic!"

This means ; we were too lazy and unimaginative to come up with anything new, so we just regurgitated the same thing we have been doing for the past 2 years.

This is really basic business stuff here. Despite how elementary most of this is, I'm quite sure someone is going to reply with the answer that they should keep making widgets and hire more people to make foos.

But staying with the widgets would be a sound business strategy.  You would be keeping a solid foundation you know is making you money that you can fall back on in the event the foos do not work out.

I do understand what you are saying though.  There have been games in development in the past that never saw the light of day because they realized they would never "pull in the WoW numbers".

The problem here is with us in the West and I mean both the EU and US market.  We're being overshadowed by the Asian market.  It doesn't likely matter from their perspective that the games they shutdown might have operated in the black, the fact is none of them, including CoH, have the kind of numbers that Lineage, Aion, B&S, and their other games have, none of them.  By comparison to their successful Asian numbers all the Western market games were essentially failures.

While this may be true, I still find it silly that any company would kill a game that is turning a profit, no matter how small.  City of Heroes was contributing to profits, not taking away from them.  Just my 2 cents, but I would rather have that 6% of the revenue stream continue than just toss it aside and not have it at all.

While they haven't created more Klingon-specific content, the content they have created with the Seasons is playable by both Feds and Klinks.  In that sense, it's a lot more than what's been put in the C-Store.

Adding re-skinned "universal" missions does nothing to advance the story of the Klingon faction, nor does it by any stretch of the imagination double the content that did get put into the game. It is nothing more than laziness to avoid truly fleshing out the Klingon story.

Hey if you want to defend the practice of recycling old content over and over, more power to you.   You will find even the most hard core defenders of the game crying boredom and remarking about the reptetive grind on the official forums.

While it may be true some feel episodic content provides poor ROI, what you have here in STO is the polar opposite.  Here, Cryptic/PWE has gone out of their way of crapping lockbox after lockbox after lockbox to generate more money while letting the content suffer.

Actually it's not gambling.  There is no cash payout if you win which is what a lot of gambling laws are based on.  If there was real gambling going on you can bet that countries and states would be looking to tax the hell out of it.

To be more accurate, in terms of real world law, it is not gambling "yet". There are many countries, the USA included, that are investigating how to tax the value of virtual assets. You can find information regarding this on your own. The reward may not be a cash payout, but it does have some real world monetary value. The item of contention at present is that players themselves do not "own" these virtual goods, so they technically cannot be claimed as assets. However, nothing is preventing players (eg. gold farmers) from selling them for real world cash and turning a profit.

The Kompu Gatcha was considered gambling in Japan and I do not believe you will see this being allowed in other countries.

Originally posted by Rohn Yes, it would be far better if everything was gained almost instantly.  Instant gratification has been such a successful concept as it regards MMO design.

Never said anything of the sort. What I (and most all others who point out this very same issue) do object to is the mind numbing, repetitive grind of stupidly trivial things and idiotic content block timers, like running the silly winter race once a day for 25 days. That is a complete lack of imagination and a recycling of what has been done already.

What would be nice? Episodic story content for a (still after nearly 3 years) content starved game. Give the ship as a reward for an actual Star Trek mission instead of Q pretends to be Santa while standing there next to Ferengi Yoda and his lightsabers. This is, yet again, another fine example of the lack of care and creativity going into all Cryptic games.

But yes, it's a horrible thing to have people actually have to play the game to earn the new ship.  Just horrible.

No, it is not horrible for people to play the game. What is horrible is the lack of anything meaningful to do. What we are given is silly, boring, repetitive and unimaginative. I do give them kudos for not actually inventing yet another lockbox. for it.

Of course, if they had just put it in the C-Store, people would have bitched about "greed", right?

I would not have. The C-Store is for those who want to go the instant gratification route. Those who did not want to plunk down the cash for it could always spam the space bar until their eyes bleed doing the same repetitive content over and over until they earned it in game.

As with most games, STO will be having a Winter seasonal event againt this year.  It builds on the Q inspired event of last year.

http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=772651

Some of the details of the event, like the snowman threat, and "The Fast And the Flurrious" race, are identified here:

http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=774311

The rewards for the event can be found here: http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=775821

Some pretty cool stuff in there.

Running the same content for 25 days to get a ship if you want it.... nice.  Glad to see Cryptic/PWE doing something to lessen the already enormous grind in the game.

Oh wait...

I don't see this happening in the U.S. or Europe. Maybe some countries in Europe. Gaming just isn't regulated the same way in the West as it is in the East. To my knowledge, it's not really regulated at all.

I wonder what percentage of income these companies get from the "Gotcha" items. Some of these games may not be able to survive without it. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, so long as new games come along to replace them with better content.

MMOs may not be regulated, but online gambling can be and is in many countries.  If you do some historical background reading on lockboxes in STO, you will find that some folks make the comparison to lockboxes and gambling.

Just by my own personal observation, and I think you can find evidence to this on your own, Cryptic/PWE make a very good chunk of change on selling these lockboxes.  While generally not bad, STO has become totally polluted with them.  This is what the author of the posted article says would happen - companies make so much off these kinds of items that all they want to do is keep making the lockboxes rather than real content for the game.

Interesting article http://seekingalpha.com/article/611721-regulation-may-alter-mmo-landscape-part-1

"On Gree properties, as with many other online games utilizing micro transactions, customers buy mystery packages that, when opened, reveal virtual objects worth little to a lot depending on their rarity. Shares in Gree slid 23% after the specific virtual game mechanic known as "kompu gacha" ("complete gotcha") was ruled in violation of Japanese law. Other developers using the mechanic, and likely to see an impact on their game revenues, include Konami, Klab, Namco Bandai (NCBDF.PK), Sega, and Zynga (ZNGA). The ban has not yet gone into effect but is expected to shortly."

This "Kompu Gacha" mechanic sound familiar to those polluted with Locboxes in STO?  Here's to hoping this starts a trend in other countries.

In a recent announcement, Cryptic has announced some pretty significant changes to some of the systems and content that came with Season 7, including some alterations to lockout timers and the dilithium economy.  The Foundry should be coming back online as well.

http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=765961

A lot of other info in there as well: Feature Episode Replay, an Andorian ship coming in the near future, 3rd Anniversary upcoming, and so on.

Tranlsation : We're making the grind " just a bit easier " and we're adding more lock box drops or something very similar not called lock boxes.

Translation:  They are listening to feedback and making adjustments accordingly, which is what most rational people would expect.

Really?  Why didn't they listen to all the feedback they received from Tribble testing?  Players told them the changes were too drastic from the moment it was released on the test server.  Guess they don't listen all that well...

Only thing I personally am expecting in future updates is more lockbox crap.

The problem is not with f2p, or worth it / not worth it... STO is a great game if you play it for the content like me, and avoid the endgame treadmill.

The problem with Season 7, as you can see on the links OP posted, that PWE changed the grind, and made it much worse. Like a poster said on STO forum, it's now a boring second work, without a salary... and people are playing to have fun, not to spend hours per day in a treadmill.

I still find it amazing (and very sad) that Cryptic are choosing to focus so heavily on cash shop items rather than improving the core codebase of their engine.

STO is a visually impressive game and I honestly feel some of the missions, especially a few of the Featured Episodes, are well done and can be quite fun to play.  Even if played more than once.  The problem of STO (and CO IMO) is the lack of variety in play.  All content basically boils down to spamming the spacebar and F key.   There is no variety to the mechanics in the game.

Were Cryptic to focus even half the effort they put into developing more C-Store junk that you do not need, they could have a great variety of different quest/mission content and mechanics, fully fleshed out Klingon Faction, true sandbox exploration and all the other stuff players have asked for since BETA.    At least for me, give me a lot of engaging story content to play and I will gladly keep playing and spending money on C-Store items.

Notice I do not say PWE/Cryptic here.  Cryptic has been infatuated with the C-Store long before PWE ever bought them.

Another good summation of Season 7 - http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=451021
