Yep it sure is looking good.
I used to play FFXI and am aware it was modeled off EQ. I was wondering if this game was going to have NM's or open world bosses that will drop loot that will stay relevant and if so how will they work?
Yeah so we can have EQ and Ultima clones instead. >.> Not to mention XIV gets bigger and more frequent updates then most MMO's out there.
Yeah I can't wait to play Triple Triad and destroy World of Darkness.

http://youtu.be/pj3hGDaDZqI This is looking pretty awsome.
It is big budget but has no investors to pay back and yes I was speaking of the turn around thanks to ARR and it has had a solid player base for a while. So yes I would say that ARR is a success
Well it's there you just don't like the style of the new games enough to stick around and find the community in them.

It is all about anointing a picture. SE have announced that they expect their revenue, operating profit and total profit etc. to be lower than last year. Not much lower but they want to reassure investors that things are stable. Which is all about painting a picture. And 1M subs sounds good.

Now to get that number they have had to add together 3 games and to refer back to "old" data. Which is somewhat suspicious as they will have current data. It may be that the three games now have "slightly less" than 1M. Not "significantly" less financially but less than 1M. And it could be that FFXIV's numbers have grown - but that the other games have fallen more.

The Chinese launch - sure but they have factored that into their projections - and f2p revenue can be even more fickle than subs.

Painting pictures.

As Bioware did a few months ago. SWTOR has 1M players a month they announced. The same number they announced 12 months ago. A picture of stability right? If only.

When EA announced their financial results they also wanted to paint a picture: that their new titles were doing "really" well. They were able to say that f2p revenue was higher than it was 12 months earlier but it wasn't that big a jump. So they also told investors that things would have been $62M higher if it wasn't for some games declining - primarily Sim City and SWTOR.

So on the one hand we have Bioware saying SWTOR has the same number of players as it did 12 months ago and on the other hand EA saying that SWTOR made a lot less - maybe $20M less, maybe $40 less - all we know is that a $62M fall was due primarily to SWTOR and Sim City.

Different pictures. And a lesson in why one has to be very careful about the message you take away.

I agree but I believe in china you buy the game and p2p by the hour, not f2p but is different from a normal sub. I'm guessing they don't use china numbers because another company is running it over there and SE only gets a percentage of the money they earn there anyway.

I remember reading a while back that FFXI had brought in more revenue for SE than any other game they had made up to that point.  It topped out at 500,000 active subs if I remember correctly.  Sounds like SE is doing pretty good with its current MMOs.

To be fair there are reasons ffxi was so profitable, it cost very very little to make and it launched at a time when players were incredibly loyal and stuck with titles for a long time, mainly cause very few new titles came out as they do today.

None of those 2 things apply to FFXIV.

Your argument is like saying black was an incredibly popular color when ford first began making cars, so black is the most popular color for ford now.

On what facts are you basing "None of those 2 things apply to FFXIV"?  Especially the "stuck with titles for a long time" part?  As long as they maintain a dedicated sub base, which FF has, then it can be very successful without having millions of subs.  It doesn't even have to be the same people continuously.  There are still a lot of Legacy players running around in game.

Your car analogy makes absolutely no sense btw.

Well amber-r has been telling us tales of gloom for this game since it hit. The fact is 1 and 1 quarter years have passed since launch and it has a dedicated sub base and is already a success.

That's just it, square released this report in May of 2014 & MMORPG it's acting like its fresh news. There's no fact checking here, just copy and paste from other sites and outdated info. That's what folks are upset about.

Actually you're wrong.  Square had a press conference last week and THEY used these numbers themselves.  They decided to use old numbers to mislead investors and the press.  Why?  because it's obvious the numbers are a lot lower now so used old outdated numbers.  All 3 of those games have lost large numbers of players since then.

Also as an aside here but are people in this thread really implying any mmo has more players 9 months later instead of significantly less?  That's not how MMO populations work, if it did WoW would be sitting at 30-40 million by now.

MMO populations don't grow year on year, they decrease year on year because only a small minority actually stick with a title for a long time.

Nope, when the ps4 launched "after march" they added servers because well more people came also 3 months ago ffxiv launched in china with 1 million preorders. So yeah numbers went up after these numbers back in march. Also it took years for WoW to get to it's top amount of 12 mil plus it didn't happen right as it launched.

Almost every MMO launches in China, most every mmo fails in China because it's a far more demanding audience due to having to pay hourly to play and the dominance of the main titles.  Again if the numbers are higher why would the head exec of the company not use upto date numbers?  He can get these numbers and not be forced to use ones from last march if they were so amazing.  Polygon didn't use old numbers, they quoted the CEO last week who was using them.

Again all this is meaningless, an MMO simply does not grow subscriber numbers a year later than what it had when it was new.  Population numbers drop year on year (and in many cases month on month), they don't rise.  Gw2 launched in China, Rift launched in china and they all still have less players than they did at launch.

It amazes me sometimes that I'm on an MMO forum, are people really buying that an mmo in this day and age has more players a year later than at launch?  Populations explode at the start and then receed, that's a fact of the life span of an mmo.

Yes, while talking about 2013 to march 2014 earnings and stats.

We all know why they added a F2P option, it doesn't make SWTOR any less successfull today. Claiming SWTOR is a failure because it added a F2P option 2 years ago, all while ignoring all the successes and insanly positive turnaround it has had since, is like saying FFXIV failed while ignoring the relaunch....

The double standard some FFXIV fans have with SWTOR is off the charts here lol

I agree with this. It's the same story, except SWtoR never closed down for a period of time and because the IP is more popular SWtoR has a stronger following out of the gate.

Hey I didn't say it wasn't doing well. I just said they had to go ftp in order to do so.

I want to know how much does each game have.

No MMO in a post SWTOR world will ever announce game subscription numbers if they are under 1 million.

Final Fantasy is not a failure like SWTOR and other games that released in the past years. It really is the only mmo released in the last 10 years that I can is a real success even if it took them 2 tries to achieve it.

SWTOR has over 500k subs, over a million players a month, and makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

All games not named named WoW would KILL to fail that hard lol.

Please do tell....what makes FFXIV a success and SWTOR a failure? Regardless of SWTOR having a F2P option, they both have compareble subscription numbers.....I know...you are just tlaking out your ass because you don't really have a reason why SE won't release actual monthly player numbers for FFXIV like EA does for SWTOR and Blizz does for WoW...

Well they were forced to go f2p because they spent a lot on the making of the game and weren't able to retain enough players to stay p2p. If they would have tried to stay p2p and not go f2p it probably would not have gone well especially with the way numbers were taking a nose dive.

Clearly this data is a year old. It's not even a million anymore.

Please reference the source for these numbers....

Only data that can be verified is valid... and even if this is old, it is clearly data that was accurate at that time. Any changes since then are simply speculation (unless verifiable).

Who cares if it was accurate at the time and what's the bearing a year later? If you're into it so much, can't you tell from that sentence, right there, the data is old?

Also, what's it matter if 17 million people are playing the chinese version of the game? You're on NA server or EU server. How does it affect or benefit you?

Um, It effects how many are active in playing the game was my point but also this means more money for XIV's development as well. Which I dare say does matter to me.

So you are saying the chinese release 3 months ago had no effect on the numbers who actively play?

I think it is more of a see the game isn't doing that great, F2p soon, or it's dying sort of deal. lol

Lol, I knew this would get here. This is 8 month old info and only cover as far as march 31, 2014. A lot has happened since then one of the big ones being the release in china so who knows how many active subs there are now.
Still loving the game and looking forward to the golden saucer and 3.0. :)
I will support this game if they offer some way to fund them.
