So, this goes to anyone who's played ARR since re-launch and has followed its progress over time, as major patches were released, etc... I suppose people coming later, when all the content was already in might sense it, too (if they do at all), but I don't think to the same degree as those who were there for the release of each patch...

Obligatory disclaimer: this is all my opinion of course. I'm just curious if others out there might be kinda getting a similar feeling.

Playing through to the (epic and heartbreaking... but hopeful) conclusion of 2.0's story, and now moving through HW's story, I kinda started thinking back over how the game has developed since its re-launch.

Thinking back, I feel like the first release, and the earlier 2.x patches/updates, felt like Yoshi-P and team kind of "finding their footing", working out what kind of game FFXIV:ARR would be; the kind of experience it would create. At a very high level, you can see that they sorta relied on a few core concepts, and worked those... such as the introduction of each primal. It was new content, but still grounded in the same overall idea, gameplay-wise. Same with how dungeons were introduced and then iterated through Hard and Extreme modes, etc. It feels, by comparison to HW, like they stayed kinda "restrained" in their scope, etc. Hopefully that makes sense (I haven't had coffee yet, so hopefully I'm not talking gibberish here lol).

Not that the game or content wasn't good or fun, it's a very fun experience. But, to me, it was definitely rough around the edges, some more than others.

As an analogy, it's kind of like a band releasing their first album... the music's good and there's definitely talent, but it's not fully "honed", yet. It might be a bit "inconsistent", with songs shifting between different styles as they try to find "their sound". By the second album, though, they've found their sound, and established their identity. Consequently, their second release could be much better, with a more established, refined sound, better songwriting, etc.

By the end of 2.55, it feels like SE found their footing; they'd found their sound, so to speak.

It's like "Okay, we've established a foundation, are familiar with the tools and technology, and know what we're doing with this game now... Now let's really dig in".

Personally, playing through Heavensward, I feel like they've elevated it to a whole new plateau. Everything.. the story, the writing, the characters, just about everything so far... It's just so freaking well put together.

Anyways... hopefully I explained that well.

So, anyone else have a similar feeling? Or not? Or am I just nuts? :p

Yes, this is how I have felt for a while and now that I got my hands on heavensward I do even more. I am certainly looking forward to this xpac's continued patches.

It is certainly the most populated. However if we are going by opinion, I would say FFXIV was the best one. It's all a matter of opinion.

Thanks to those of you who took the time to answer my question. 35-40 definitely feels like an improvement, still a little frustrating but being more prepared for it helps and it's a lot better than the banquet rubbish.

I feel a lot of this game is about finding that class that says "Hey this is my thing" and taking your time and getting through the storyline. You like it or you don't but regardless this game has one of the best first playthrough experiences on the market and 3.0 has done and proved that ideal further. There are a lot of fillers, those who are saying that fillers somehow get less in number clearly haven't done the storyline recently. The amount of soup fetching/glittering circle clicking/random objective gathering that has little no purpose in the story is fairly consistent and only on the way into heavensward it mellows out a SMIDGEON.However that is the end of my "positives" list for FFXIV outside of the very fun combat system, the beautiful art design and top notch fluff content. If this is a game that you would like to strictly focus on furthering your characters power I suggest many other MMO's on the market. If you are someone that enjoys pointless tasks because you find them fun and amusing, you will find FFXIV has copious amounts of these littered about the game and you will be entertained for some time. If you enjoy crafting and playing the market, making your character look absolutely fabulous then that's even more layers for you to sink your teeth into.

Regardless the $40 bucks alone is a steal for just doing the storyline alone and experiencing the game from that perspective. I could tell anyone here they should pay $40 bucks and get HW and just take the narrow and pre scripted road as the game fills you with its somewhat decent and almost amazing storytelling while experiencing that enjoyable first playthrough. When putting down that $13.00 USD at the end of your month is when things get a bit tricky because to me I don't feel 3 dungeons on grind for 6 months and a hour of raiding a week is worth $13.00. In fact this games catchup systems are so amazing that you can wait to the end of each major patch and get within competitive ilvl in a short week and just enjoy the game with all its limiters removed and keep playing until you hit that inevitable content wall that gets erected when the next major patch hits.

[mod edit]

I guess some people are only interested in battle content and hey thats up to him. Although I don't know of an MMO out there that doesn't make you grind for something. Also I believe there are 3 new dungeons and a 24 or 8 man raid every 3 months or so not to mention all the side stuff that was added like hunts, golden saucer and so on. Which is more than I could say for most theme parks out there including WoW.

I have not played in a long time I had 180 days total of subbed time.  According to the site I think I should be able to get the free month, but its not working.  Do I have to do anything special?

There is no free month the OP was full of it.

I grew up totally ignoring Final Fantasy as I didn't wanna have to start at number one and play my way through all of them in order to understand the story, considering there was so many.

I wish I knew more about FF as A Realm Reborn really looks like a fun game to keep me occupied for a while.  I was gonna give the trial a shot although one thing has been holding me back... I don't know anything about FF or the FF universe.

Is this game friendly to players who don't know anything about Final Fantasy or is it gonna carry on the storyline from the previous games?  I'd love to be able to get into this game but not knowing anything about the FF series is making me wonder if I'm just gonna be left confused the whole time.

Thanks guys.

Knowing about final fantasy actually makes this game worse because it falls so short in the gameplay

I thought it fell short in the story/acting department.

I like both and am a FF fan since the first. I haven't cared for FF story lines since XI but I would say this is the best story since VI for me now that I have gotten into heavensward story arch.

Hang on.... Is nobody seriously going to address how the OP has 4 level 50s? The guy clearly has paid for a sub before.

I am a legacy player, i played this before it got made into a raiding lobby game.

So OP am I reading it correctly that your post title is in accurate and misleading?

Is there in fact a 1 month free access or not?

There is not.

How is any of this a lobby game?

Please stop spreading lies and slander about that which you do not know about.

I'm guessing because once you finish leveling (which is what I see here) there is no need to venture out in the world, because everything is menu driven with no need to actually go to these dungeons or raids. So people just stand around in town or their houses. This is basically how all theme park mmo's have turned into.

I played and watched enough streams on 2.0 to know at end level before the x-pac that all people did were stand around and queue for dungeons and other instnced based things. Yoshi P even said he wanted to utilize the world more than they did with 2.0. Now, if 3.0 ends utilizing the open world and not just queue up for dungeons and raids via your menu then I'll be proven wrong. Oh, there's hunts, but once you do them there is no need to revist them.

Well you would be wrong. Tons of people do hunt's, fates, treasure hunts's, beastmen dailies, and all sort's of other things. I make money and get retainer tokens through hunt's so yeah you don't need to but it is useful.

Thanks guys.

Each game is it's own story in a different world so no worries and yes it has a decent community to help you out. Of course I would suggest getting into a guild or free company as it's called. If you like Jrpg's you will like it. :)

Yoshi and his teams work has not gone unnoticed by many people. Congratz to the team so far the expansion is awsome.

This game has the most mind numbingly boring group content I've ever witnessed. For me that easily outweighed the graphics and smooth leveling. When a 10 year old, dumbed down WoW has more complex dungeons you know something is wrong.

Well I'll just have to disagree with you on that. They are very comparable if you ask me.

Does crafting matter in the game?  Can u make money?

Yes, much money and they made crafted gear in the expansion more like top tear gear so I would say so.

Resubbed to the game last week in prep for Heavensward. I started up back when the NInja job came out and got to level 50 on my Ninja from fate grinding. Currently going through the story stuff now and tbh, I'm doubting whether or not it's worth my time. I love the world and all the little quirky things like the fat chocobo mount. The Japanese like style to it feels very refreshing for me also after coming from a pretty much exclusive Western MMO background. However I got into this game because it's supposed to be a Final Fantasy game and a story driven one at that. Sadly though I'm around the level 35 mark for the story and to be honest, so far the game is filler driven with story bits sprinkled in to string you along. Like having to prepare a banquet when I want to be fighting a primal.. if it wasn't for the decent explanation at the end of those quests, I probably would have quit the game in disgust right then.

So my question, is it worth sticking it out? After I reach level 50 and go through the mountain of content released since launch (not hating) am I going to come out of it and say it's story driven and worth it for the story? I really don't mind the smaller quests when they make sense to the story but too often it just feels like unnecessary stuff added for no other reason than to take up more of my time.

In my book it is worth it. The story gets deeper and more FF like as the game goes along. There will be more fluff quests in the main story as it goes on though, but more and better story elements get added as it goes along as well. Once you get to heavensward you will be happy you did. They have added 20 to 25% more voice acting I would say, and also better voice acting. They have also got rid of a lot of the filler quests in the main story so it's more direct.

Welcome to the game my friend. Nice videos ya got there. :)

Will it be the same like in ARR?

Maybe the main scenario?

Maybe all NPCs?

I played a lot yesterday and found that there is more VA so far than in ARR. Also I have noticed new voice actor's for many characters and I have to say they are better IMO.

No, just the straw that broke the camel's back for me here.

Agreed, but it's what any company would do.

Man this thread has gotten out of hand.

If people stopped simply blatantly whining about this and and saying "waah this is hard" e.t.c. and followed up with solutions and concerns it wouldn't provide so much fuel for the flaming that a lot of the aggressive FFXIV playerbase seems to be doing in this thread.

You are very aggressive as well my friend not trying to piss you off or anything. I would say coming up with solutions is pointless because no matter what SE is keeping it this way. They can't please all sides so they went for the middle ground and made it where people can get through the content in half the time.
