I'm not gonna read that giant wall of text but I will say, yes, it is a matter of preference, but there is also an objective view as well. If a game is full of bugs then yes it is in a worse state than a more refined one. Not saying FFXIV is, just an example. But there are comparable objective elements that cause me to say WoW is better.

And really, FFXIV bombed the first time around, copying WoW and other games was explicitly stated as a goal in the revamp. So to me at least, there is no chance of game that just released copying and doing better than a game that has been around  an entire decade and has had time to refine itself over and over.

I'm pretty sure a majority of people would agree WoW is not bad, not by a long shot, we're simply burned out or tired of its familiarity. Assuming WoW could reinvent the wheel again there is no doubt in my mind everyone would drop whatever MMO theyre playing and return.

Well, WoW has copied many games as well it just streamlined and made everything more accessible for the masses before anyone else. They did not reinvent the wheel either. That being said I could care less if FFXIV does better than WoW or not as long as I think it's better which make me a rabid fan boy. >.>

My account was activated today. Think I will take a look. Figured to let everyone else know since I haven't seen the story here.

They have a financial report due at the end of march so they are trying to boost the numbers by activating all accounts, which makes the sub numbers look better than they actually are.

Its a 10 day subscription they gave you for free, as well as everyone else.

Cheap and rather desperate tactics to try boost numbers.

They do this with every update. I been playing it exclusively during those times because i don't see why i need to pay $15 a month when i can catch up to the best geared players in these free weekends.

Has nothing to do with financial reports.

Really?

A "free weekend" that lasts nearly 2 weeks (longest one ever), at the exact time when financial reports that will give subscriber numbers is due?  Keep in mind that they are giving 2 weeks free subscription time to all non-subscibers here, this isn't free to play access because subscribers are still paying.  This is like the government making a new forced "training program" that classes people as employed right before unemployment figures are announced XD

It's a coincidence right?

If WoW gave free subscription time to everyone that isn't paying right before a financial report people would call it just as I'm calling this.  It is what it is, obscene number bloating and a horrendous sign of desperation.

Really. Also as one person has said already the financial report will only cover up through December. You really seem to dislike this game to come up with these ideas of yours.

Title was all I read, if its a Harthstone wana be it makes me smile. Seems everyone is making one and who can blame them with all the money Blizzard is making lol

[mod edit]

This card game was in FFXIII, way before your dear Blizzard ever thought of making a card game.

Its one of the feature that was asked about the most by the fan.

[mod edit]

FFXIII or FFVIII? i didnt play 8 enough to see it there but i dont remember it in 13. Maybe it was in both, idk.

FFVIII

It's a great addition to the game with multiple rule sets and 80 cards to collect with more coming it the furture. :D

$15 for 1 day of content per week. Restricted on purpose by SE.I am not an idiot, they get no money from me for that shit.

Unless there are some drastic changes to the core game  i don't see a bright future.

  • Grind old dungeons or hunts for TokenXYZ but only 400 then you are done for the week unless you do your single coil run too.
  • Every couple months SE comes up with a new TokenXYZ and a single new set per class with +3 stats and you start the grind all over again.
  • Golden Saucer is cute but will get old really quick.

_____

Best part: A new player that has not played for a year comes back to the game and starts grinding same tokens of the Month instantly being at the same level as veterans getting the same gear while others paid for 1 year subscriptions.

Lol not sure what you are smoking. This game comes out with quality content faster than any other game out there.

Rift, trove, wildstar, MH, Warframe? need to say more, not only game that bring out content pretty fast, I am not called them faster they do have down time like every other mmo even ff14.

You really don't need to say more, it's painfully obvious you don't even play this game. To say that FFXIV pumps out more content than all those games combined is hardly an overstatement.

In other news, FFXIV has broken the 4 million accounts milestone: http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/053fde1539272640c4e2b362042d0d2686f228b1

The servers are going to collapse come Heavensward.

Wow, I guess that means that 1.5 million or so people have bought the game since nov. or dec. last year very nice.

FF14 have long way to catch up to wow, is maybe 2nd or 3nd top sub mmo eve may have more. there both not going hit 1 mil. if didn't hit it be for there not going hit it now. Not saying is fail mmo, just never be as big as a monster like wow.

Last I checked FFXIV has 2.5 million or more now.

You're wrong.

Actually, he's correct.

Prove it.

Registered accounts are not subscribers and square themselves have said 500k.

I know this is a fan board but still when you lie you set your fellow players up for massive dissapointment.

They are wrong but we don't know how many there are. SE released data but its a year old now and doesn't count China.

Thing is, in the last annual report, they had less than 1 million active subscribers, i sincerely doubt that in the last year, they have more than doubled their subscriber base, though by now i can easily accept they have over 1 million active subscribers, and i do say this as a long time player of the game, the game is successful, which in itself is impressive given the number of games that have 'failed' recently, but all this crazy talk about massive player numbers etc just comes across as desperate, not to mention bizarre, why do people constantly need to try and turn games into WoW beaters, everyone must know by now that its just not going to happen.

Agreed, I was just pointing out that at this point we don't know what the numbers are. Whether it is over a million or 500k, it's all speculation.

What are the real number of FF14 anyone know? if they have 5K player per server on average, there hanging on 300 to 400K players maybe 500K on 64 server.

According to Square-Enix themselves just a while ago, they have *almost* 1 million players across all 3 of their mmos. That's not *almost* 1 million each, but *almost* 1 million altogether.

The population is still healthy. You can't make characters on most servers during the day, and my server has a que during prime hours on most evenings.

Which would be a good server that is newb friendly and has a lot of other newbs or people running alts?

I would suggest Mateus, medium low population with plenty of helpful players. All though they are all at the Golden Saucer at this point but still that will last only a little while before calming down.

Sucks there's like a billion people on and I can't even get to golden saucer because it's full.

Yep, feel your pain I'm gonna wait until I'm off on friday to try to get in again. Also it's really silly that people are getting all bent out of shape because OP put "watch out WoW" in his title. It's not as if he put it in general or the WoW forums. sheesh. There is 500k to 600k playing most likely of course that isn't counting china then the number goes much higher.

I do not understand how anyone can say there is not a gear treadmill in this game. This game is the definition of a gear treadmill it is the main issue with FFXIV's endgame structure.

Every 6 months SE negates all prior content by adding a new tier of armor in a coil, 3 months after that they add a catchup patch with weaker gear to help those without the time/skill to beat it with the weaker gear from the prior patch. The game is a perfect example of a pure linear progression structure. There is honestly a massive lack of relevant content at endgame.

I80=>I90=>I100=>I110=>I120=>I130 This has been the Item level releases of each patch with almost no horizontal progression outside the token gear which comes along side the main raid gear.

XIV has a lot of content, but 90% + is more or less pointless doing terms of character progression.

Anyone who has been playing this game seriously since launch that has a decent group is twiddling their thumbs once the weekly coil raid and point cap is done. Because there is nothing else in the game that is relevant outside a few daily quest. The other content is a one a time thing and done.

Not saying XIV is a bad game I am playing it as my main mmo, but there is a massive lack of content endgame that is not getting better as time goes at least to this point. The devs are just not keeping pace with the hardcore community at all, that combined with most the additions being designed for weekenders.

XIV is designed for casuals, if you try to hardcore this game you will run out of content extremely fast.

I agree there is a gear treadmill in this game. However the hard core community makes up a small % of the game and most players will take longer to get through new content. Also to me character development isn't the only thing that matters so I do a lot of other things in game that I enjoy.

Indeed, there is plenty of content housing, crafting, side stories , and achievements just to name a few. Now maybe some don't care for this kind of side content but that does not mean it doesn't exist.

Game is doomed to fail due to a subscription.  I am sorry that you like subscription but that business model is so archaic you need to adapt and companies need to understand that people like you (the OP) are a dying breed and will and can never support a game for long.  Evolve or die, subs are dead!

Not really, WoW, Eve and FFXIV for example say hi.

Subs are not dead, the reason so many subscription games failed is they were all designed with short shelf life systems, flash and show, that keeps you hooked for a short time but then devolves into short form repetitive content.

Games with a subscription model can survive but they need content beyond just "Repeat short form instances for slowly incrementing currency and occasional loot drop".

Everquests nexts early tech demos were ironically showcasing a system that would sustain a subscription model (Even if the execution they showed may not have).  You need long form content, and by that I mean content that will last, not artificially gated with binary fail mechanics or over inflated boss tuning, but actual content that can survive a long game, open PVP is not the answer in and of its self (though for a sub set of players it is, and that is why games have multiple server models) Archage for example can prove that point.

But the subscription is not dead, the games that are being brought to market with a sub model are simply not designed to take advantage of it.

Your little evolve or die statement shows a rather lackluster understanding of the actual problems the MMO market faces currently, which is a player base with an ever shortening attention span, higher demands for presentation of content (Which inflates the development time) combined with an willingness to engage in any activity that requires a significant time investment.  The challenge is making long form content that is delivered in small portions, once an MMO maker cracks this they will have a game that can maintain a subscription.

The problem is, its rarely viable for them to do so, and that is why I think the MMO its self is in danger of becoming a feature of other games rather than a genre in its self.

Not to mention a lot of successful f2p survive because they have a sub option. Take Swotor for example who said they had over 1 million active players, 500k of which pay a sub.

This may be the sleeper many of us have been waiting for. Well, for me it looks pretty promising.

Amen! and if you think about it he seems to have realised that a small group of passionate folks was exactly what made eq what it was . who knows maybe this is part of the right formula to making a hit for the long term!

i do know this eq originally had very little questing and that's what i miss  so sick of questing let me find 5 others and go grind 4 hrs a night while we shoot the breeze.

While I'm happy you have found an mmo you are looking forward to.  Don't mistaken your own rose-tinted memories for what the majority of gamers want.  An mmo with zero quests and only way to level is grinding will die shortly after launching.

1. It will have quests just not with ? marks over their heads

2. This will be a nitch game and whats wrong with that?

3. Why so poison tongued?

Keep it up I definitely have my eye on this project and am close to getting on board and on the forums. My bro Amsia has been a member for a while. I wasn't so sure about this project at first but you guys work hard and the more updates that happen the more I want to get on board.

But I loved being a Corsair in FFXI and they could do some decent damage with their gun.

Actually, Koji mentioned the possibly of something like this in the future.
