Glad you brought up red circles, the bread and butter mechanic of FFXIV and something FFXI could never pull off even though it's such a basic thing. I can sit here listing you the hundred different mechanics FFXIV employs in it's fights aside from basic red circles but that'd be absolutely boring. Suffice to say at this point that it says a lot about FFXI that this one basic mechanic was too much for them to implement in almost 14 years so far. Not to mention the red circles are the epitome of anti-tank & spank. You can't spank if you gotta move away from the circle.

I know the truth hurts but there is no reason to be mad.

Why are you comparing it to FFXI, a game with a 15 year old engine that is still better and has more varied content than XIV? Makes no sense to compare them. They are not even in the same League. Maybe when FFXIV comes up with something more original than Dungeons and Fates.

You can't spank if you gotta move away from the circle. You can't be serious, moving every now and then prevents you from tank and spank? I guess we call it "Tank, Spank and Occasionally move" then.

We have different opinions when it comes to content and difficulty. You keep playing your one dimensional tank and spank token grinder with 1 armor set every couple of months. I go play a real MMO.

Let;s just leave it at that.

Have to agree with Bascola here. FFXIV is the epitome of grind for tokens gear system. FFXIs renkei system alone trumps anything combat wise XIV could bring. Did you ever co ordinate a Renkei with an ancient magic burst. Name one thing XIV has on that, I can IMO say nothing. XIV can be fun but compared to XI, IMO it s just an average game.

On that note, why the hell shouldn t XIV charge for their expansions?

XIV has a number of other ways to obtain good gear besides grinding for tokens. Crystal tower is considered endgame gear, as well as coil gear and extreme primal drops. The ongoing Zodiac quest is also another alternative to tome grinding for your weapon. Also, if you're into crafting, the wootz ore gear can be crafted and triple or even quadruple melded and used in endgame content. Also, if you recall, XI had many different currencies to grind for as well. As far as mechanics go, look at a video of T9 and you'll see that mechanics in XIV isn't just avoiding telegraphs.

T9 Vid-   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_lnPoQNu7w

Absolute Virtue(XI)-    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbo_DNgykAE

I couldn't find an older AV video but this one's about 8 years old. It was the hardest boss battle when it came out and don't get me wrong, it was very difficult. But not because of mechanics. He had a TON of life, hit like a truck, and of course his 2 hour that you needed to look out for. As far as the battle went though, it was simply lots and lots of prepping b4 hand and tank and spank. The most complicated mechanic you would run into in that fight (back in the day) was bouncing hate between each alliance. The zodiac god fights were no more complicated either. Tank and spank and kite and spank.

These are by no means prime examples of each game's mechanics but I could post more if I wanted to. Fact of the matter is, mechanically, XIV is more complicated. However, XI allows the player more freedom to engage in a fight as they see fit. Please don't misunderstand. I played XI for many years and I loved it. I just think XIV should be given more credit than what some are giving.

I would also like to add that, while XIV's mechanics are more complicated, all that was involved in playing a job, and playing it well, in XI was far more in depth!

I said its not for me. I am perfectly happy to play on free weekends. For me it is not worth paying a monthly sub if i can do most of it in free weekends due to the caps. I am legacy, i have all jobs, 2 relics, story line done, coil up to 9, boring token gear, crafting classes maxed and 2 with relics. This has nothing to do with camping mobs. The game is just boring and gated to hell.

You are not being truthful. You PM'd me and asked what game I was playing that had all this non combat content I enjoy. Then when I told you you said "oh yeah I did all of that, its boring" but of course you wouldn't tell me your character name because thats something you "just dont do"

I can tell you are lying because there are no relics for crafting classes only lucis. And if anyone had actually done all of the things in this game that you claim you have done, you would be a super fan. Instead you're trying to say you achieved more than most of the hardcore player base and you were bored to tears the whole time. Right.

Of course you can always back up these fantastic claims with a little proof. I don't know anyone who breezes through everything the game offers on a free weekend so you would be some kind of pro gamer right?

right.

I am a big FF fan and still play FFXI, Played FFXIV from the start since i was legacy. I stopped paying for FFIXV end of December when sub ran out and i realized that nothing changes only the token names.

I call them relics because they are the relics for crafting classes. You can call them whatever, that's what me and the FC call it and you seem to have understood it too.

I don't share my info for privacy reasons. You can believe me or not, that's up to you but if you really honest you know that you can breeze through the content in the free weekends which usually are 4-5 days. You can max a class in a couple hours.

I have a Free Company and friends that i play with on these weekends of cause. Solo it might be a little more difficult.

So level 1-50 in 2 hours? No. Ok you quit this last december but you payed for it all the way up till then? Of course you Have got alot done in the game you played from 1.0 till 4 months ago. Yeah I can see why you won't be getting 3.0 expansion you would never catch up just doing free weekends. Also even if the expansion wasn't coming out you still wouldn't stay caught up on gear story and other stuff just doing free weekends which are 3 days most of the time unlike the last one that was 5 or so.

Community is pretty nice. Just dont say anything bad about the game or they'll jump down your throat like a savage mob.

Well there are those who criticize in a decent manner and those who are rude, state opinions as facts and just plain state incorrect things. So there are two sides to this coin.

Lets see 8 new lvling dungeons, alexander raid, what ever is taking the place of crystal tower, large scale fates, hunts, 3 new jobs, new playable race, main story, side story and on and on.  Also to the underlined, there will be plenty more than just one set of armor at end game and the areas are used for questing, dailies, gathering and plenty of other things. You just don't like that you don't camp mobs to lvl in this game thats all.

It's Not for me, no money from me, free weekends are enough to catch up. You keep paying the monthly fees for me. /smh

lol point still stands, its plenty for people who like this style of game play. Also you so in my faced me with the underlined childish remark. >.>  XI was very gated as well remember the limit breaks from lvl 50 to 70 now that was some gating. I get on 15 to 20 hour a week and have plenty to do but hey if end game is all that matters to you more power to ya.

Yeah, Tank & Spank: The Game had really original contents all the time. Sure, the content & gating mechanics were different but the combat encounters mostly played out using the same old, tired, unbalanced formula. FFXIV is the complete opposite, with more varied encounter mechanics being introduced constantly but with the overall content & gating mechanics being the same. FFXI is like "look guys, you need to /kneel to win this fight! And this monster might just charm one of the players! Such innovation and it only took us 7 years to get to this point"

Someone is mad. The alternative to the underlined is Ifrit is vulnerable to Ice, so spam that over and over because its the most effective thing. There are many different mechanics not just red circles like when fighting Diablo boss with the doors mechanic.  You have to open the correct ones so you don't take massive damage and yes once you know the mechanics it gets easier but that can be said for most games including XI.

 disregard.

"FFXIV should not charge for expansions because people who don't like it won't buy it." :P

For people who enjoy the game, they're adding in as much if not more content than the base game. That's well worth the money.

To be fair, they are adding no NEW content. They are adding more of the existing boring content. Yay, new tokens for 1 whole new armor set with stat +1 and areas that serve no purpose other than backdrops for fates/hunts with mobs no one ever kills.

_________________________________________________________________

I was hoping for new content like FFXI introduced:

  1. Dynamis
  2. Voidwatch
  3. Limbus
  4. Conquest
  5. Besieged
  6. Assaults
  7. Meeble Burrows
  8. Einherjar
  9. ...the list goes on
Where is the truly NEW and original content. All they have is a capped token grind and WOW raid end game. This expansion is not worth the money and the game is not worth a subscription to me because playing 3-6h a week is not worth $15 a month.

  • FAINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward World Premiere (hah, they noticed the "FAINAL" during the guest segment)
  • The video they showed during the test stream with all the jobs is part of the benchmark and was supposed to be released at choukaigi (2 weeks from now). Soken says they released that bit early to apologize to the fans for having delayed the expansion for a month (into the "not-quite-spring" date).
  • To fly, hold jump to gain altitude, look down with the camera to go down. Fly into the ground to land; walk off ledge and you fly.
  • Currently, flying mounts run at 90% the speed of ground mounts and fly at 200% the speed of ground mounts, but that might be adjusted, possibly up.
  • You can be safe from ground monsters while flying, and there won't be any "sky monsters" to harass the flying players.
  • There will be a quest to turn your companion chocobo into a flying mount.
  • There are plans to turn the current flying-like mounts (e.g. Ahriman) into actual flying mounts, but it won't be in 3.0.
  • Paladins will get an additional combo, alternative to Halone. It will not replace Halone though.
  • The new actions for combat jobs will need quests just like we've had to so far.
  • They will reveal the new Dragoon limit break at Choukaigi.
  • The new gear sets Yoshida revealed are from dungeon drops.
  • New crafter skills will come from leveling, class quests, and the Specialist system.
  • The Specialist system is meant to re-balance jobs so it's not like you need everything at max level to be able to do things. It'll still help, but the idea is to not make it mandatory anymore.
  • They are changing the starting points for the current Frontline maps.
  • New Monk PvP weapon will be a Dragon version of Sphairai.
  • Craft Housing = build a miniature house inside your house.
  • Airships will be assembled from 4 main components (e.g. bow, stern, etc; I don't know all them naval terms :D).
  • 2.0 Content will have its difficulty adjusted.
  • Premade parties can go into dungeons with incomplete numbers (no mention of going alone).
  • "Syncing to lowest IL" = mode where everyone's gear is level synced to the lowest item level allowed for the dungeon.
  • The loot system is separate between Alexander Normal and Hard.
  • Primal battles will drop tokens (guaranteed drop) that you can trade for the item you want, instead of having to spam them until you get your drop. This is not exactly like how it'll work on Alexander.
  • Premade parties can check a "loot master" option, where the party leader decides who gets the items (no loot rolling). Yoshida mentions the possibility of "loot auctioning" (similar to what raid groups do with DKP, but possibly with Gil for PUGs).
  • Premade parties can check an option that disables the "Need" roll option.
  • Alexander Normal will work like the Crystal Tower worked (run as many times as you want, loot limited).
  • There will be future updates with details on each new expansion system (new jobs, etc).

  • (after showing a modified version of End of an Era updated for Final Coil turn 3): They will be adding Echo to Final Coil in a future update, before the release of the expansion.

See http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/3280hy/letter_from_the_producer_live_slidesbase/ for the things thatwere in the slides.

Guest segment

Only some things I found interesting to mention:

  • Yoshida drew all basic storyboards for movies since 2.0; Ikumori then made proper storyboards from them and his team produced them.
  • End of an Era took around 14 months to produce.
  • The Heavensward trailer itself also took around a year to make.
  • Yoshida wanted the Warrior of Light to wear the 2.0 Dragoon AF armor, but Ikumori insisted that they used the new weapon since they were going through the trouble of animating it anyway.
  • On the 1.0 movie, Ikumori was never told what monster the adventurers would be fighting (just that they would be fighting something) so he put a Morbol since he likes morbols.
  • The dragon in the Heavensward trailer was accidentally made white; they noticed it after releasing the Teaser trailer. Apparently Yoshida sent the Visual team the wrong dragon model.
  • In Yoshida's original storyboard, the Warrior of Light would himself fight against that dragon, but Ikumori convinced him to change.

Announcement corner

  • Yoshida remembered he forgot something: There will be a new tank achievement mount for the Dark Knight, in a similar way to the current Lion and Bear.
  • TOHO Cinemas (where the live letter was held) will play the Heavensward opening movie as a trailer before movies.
http://imgur.com/a/AkDJa#38 Enjoy more. :)

I have never tried FFXIV but I've been leaning towards it more and more lately. Is it easy to find groups and people to play with? How is the community in general?

Don't let these people above fool you. The community in this game is just as elitist and annoying as WoW's if you want to do the raids, and god forbid if you don't go break-neck speed in the instanced dungeons, unless you want to bring down the wrath of the teenage boy playing a Miqo'te.

The first time I ever had a shitty experience with an MMO's community was with this game. Was in a raid, we wiped ONCE, and the leader kicked out everyone from the raid, crying that we all sucked. Get ready to deal with that BS if you plan to.

If you generally keep to yourself and only speak with your guild? Yeah, good community. Talk to a random person or join a pug dungeon? You're gonna have a bad time.

You must be reading a different thread because no one has implied that these servers are perfect. So keep crying into your keyboard mr angry lol.

Not crying, merely stating fact. And yes, I read the thread. Nearly every post above me was pushing the opinion that the game has a good community, and that's simply not true. It's like every MMO's community, good and bad.

Go back to your fanboy box, kid.

Because he disagree's he's a fanboy. Well in my opinion it has an over all good community with a couple of bad eggs and elitist.

FFXIV is for me. I love the story, boss battles, dungeon runs, triple triad etc. etc.

It has a max limit on how many people you can block.

And every time I login (faerie server) I get spammed by at least one or two gold selling spammers.

I keep playing, and every 5-30 minutes I get spammed.

Unlike WoW, I can't right click their name and hit "report" and it automatically blocks them. In WoW, I don't even have a max cap as far as I can tell to report and auto block spammers. In fact, WoW barely has any gold spammers left.

FFXIV is super enjoyable, but not being able to hit report on these spammers and auto block them without them adding to your ignore limit does kinda kill it for me.

I keep playing and the MMO is TONS of fun. But its one reason free MMOs are usually killed for me, so much gold selling spam.

I'd be okay with it if I could just hit report and it auto ignores them...but FFXIV doesn't even have that option. Not many MMOs do sadly, just WoW and it worked really well for them as gold spammers are pretty much gone from WoW now (not 100%, but vastly better than it used to be)

Anyone else getting spammed non-stop by gold spammers? I can't even ignore anymore cause I hit my ignore cap...so nothing I can do. And I'm not playing ignore management game and removing my block list every time I log on, that isn't fun at all. Thats worse than inventory management game some MMOs have.

Just one?

I can name 4 right off top of my head.

  1. Horrible, slow combat
  2. Classes that offer no thought to play
  3. linear, small world
  4. art style that promotes childish behaviors

Wow, really want to talk about childish behavior. How about constantly going to a forum of a game you hate to talk trash for trolling purposes. Although it's been a while since you have.

The spammers I can ignore. The unforgivably small zones are far more of a problem.

I just don't see these "shoe box" (not saying you have said this) size zones a few people go on about on here. I see a few decent sized zones like coerthas and southern thanalan, a bunch average size ones and a couple of small ones like upper and outer la noscea. I think it just seems smaller because of the ease of travel. Also with the expansion coming up it will be almost twice as big and Yoshi said that the new zones will be very large. :)

Glad people know the difference between a single player and mmo. >.>
And it is.... Can't wait to find out more!

Won't really go into detail, but man the last bit of story quests were dramatic as hell.

Yeah, it was awsome. I saw some plot twists coming but there was definitely some surprises as well. :)

I decided to re sub to play with my friends.

This game is 1 and a half years old and all the servers are still not open to make a new character.

This is so lame, I cant play with my friends and the game is so empty now, couldn't even find a group to do a lv 32 dungeon and the main cities are so empty.

I guess WoW is still the only good themepark out there.

The server system being full is registered players, it does not mean current playing population or even subscribed players.

A player that is on a server that hasn't played for a year, is still counted to that servers full rating.  Which is why if you come back after a long break you're still on that server, no matter how busy of "full" it is.

To use an analogy, it's like a restaurant that is half empty having a full sign based on people phoning in and ordering a table without paying anything.

The only way you can get on is when other players server swap off the one you want or when RMT or botters are banned, the server opens up the slot from that person swapping late at night.

Jut throwing a little common sense into the thread.

You probably remembered me or someone else saying this a long time ago.  This is no longer the case, and I believe it was a rumor to begin with.  In truth, the game now appropriately detects the server's capacity and allows character creation based on such.  This is why it's impossible to get on during the weekends, and easier to do such in the early morning.  Also why you get more Gil spam during the early morning on frequently full servers since they are able to create characters.  In addition, they typically ban in waves to maximize effectiveness, and not on individual cases (when it comes to RMT).  This would mean that there would only be one time every few weeks when spots will be open, if it was on a per character basis.  You also see this when there seems to be less people in a city or when there is no line to enter the game.

Not at all, it's a very common idea that players state because they want it to be true.  GW2 players said the same when it was proven not to be true (the devs announced how it worked) it's a very common misconception.  I remember GW2 players would state the server says full so it's full of people 24/7 lol, you would go online and most all the zones would be barren.  The only time a full rating goes down is when people get banned, server swap or when the devs do a prune of inactive players (which almost never happens).

It's not a full active server, it's a full registered server.  Most of the players that count to the full rating aren't online or aren't subscribed.  If you stop playing for a year or two your character is still on that servers database and you will still login to the same "full" server with no serious problem at all.  If it really was a full active server everyone on that server would have wait times of an hour or more.

I have played on active full servers on other games (the only time you ever see it on any game is new releases in it's first or second week) and if you crash or DC you can't get back online for 1-2 hours because you meet the same massive queue system players trying to make a char on the server get.  Also when you have full active servers you can come back at 4am and see the server will say low to medium.  FFXIV does not have either of these things so it's just wishful thinking.

As I say I know the forum I'm on and the people here so I understand why you argue against it but for anyone without the "I want to believe" mindset it's really obvious the full rating is just registered players (whether they have quit, not subbed, not online or whatever).  Since they don't really delete old players that are on a long break or quit anymore the only time this really changes is when they ban a load of RMT.

So if you want to get on a specfic server just do so after a RMT banning wave, or you will also get a small handful open up early in the morning from transfers.

I don't know which one of you is right but until one of you has proof, it's all speculation.

April fools! XD

Sadly many tough encounters come down to luck where if you do them enough you will win.  I feel like some praise the combat is getting is completely undeserved.  As far as casters go, they are glued due to engagement system and mobs that can teleport.  Wizards are further hamstrung by every battle becoming a clusterfark with party members mixed with enemies and friendly fire always being on.

Also the party AI is often unresponsive or just uncooperative in focusing down enemies.  I often can't get my melee chars to stay on a single enemy.

The game is good, just the combat difficulty feels like it's the result of some annoying mechanics and luck-reliant systems.

I have to agree with this assessment of the combat. Other than that I am liking the game quite a bit.

That's a terrible assessment of the combat as it isn't luck based its strategy based. You do almost any fight enough times in any game you're bound to stop repeating mistakes that get you killed. Otherwise you're retarded if you keep making the same plays and expecting a different outcome.

Wow, I don't make the same plays over and over so thankfully I'm not retarded as you say. >.> However the underlined is very true and adds to the pauses in my combat and screws up stuff in battle sometimes. I would like turn based combat better but thats not happening. Like I said though really enjoying the game, its got great atmosphere, story, lore, and customization.
