I normally just read these boards and never cared to post before, but after seeing some of these posts saying the community is better than in other MMORPGs, I have to vehemently disagree.

The community was mostly positive for the first few months of the game's release, which is typical of an MMORPG that employs the usual tank/healer/dd mashup. After the majority of players hit end game, the good will of the populace was quickly eroded by the grinds, the vast gap in skill level between different demographics of gamers, and the culture that forms around lockouts. As a result, it is a field full of hot land mines just waiting to be stepped on.

As for the above posters saying that good people have chased off trolls, I think you have that in reverse. Passive-aggressive individuals have been chasing off anyone who has any good feedback to offer on the game. Bringing up any complaints about the trinity, lack of depth in combat, or the lockout culture that encourages static groups will result in a lot of insinuated personal attacks against you.

There is simply no escaping that the community for the game is in the exact same situation as many others. In some ways its even worse because of the kind of fan-boy/fan-girl -ism in the community. The effect of redesigning the game has also in some ways made things worse because people who genuinely don't like the game keep hoping that Yoshida is going to make it into something better than it currently is, when all signs show the contrary at the moment.

Well just gonna have to agree to disagree. In game I see mostly positive and helpful people with a few bad eggs which is bound to happen.  Unfortunately on these forums and the lodestone there are some over the top fan boys but at the same time there is just as many haters some of them come here a lot always telling us the same thing over and over. "Until they make it XI it sucks" and goal post moving on when the game will fail or go f2p.

To the first underlined, it's all well in good to give feed back on how to make the game better. How ever I have seen many lodestone users doing so very aggressively with very colorful language and mean spirited  tone so of course people come right back at them in the same manner. I see this happen to often really.

To the second underlined, It's been almost a year now and honestly the game is pretty much set on the path it's going to take. I don't know how you want this game to be but if your wanting drastic changes I think you are wasting your time.

Nothing I posted has anything to do specifically with me. I'm just stating what I've seen since the beta all the way to the current patch. When end game is about the efficiency of doing things over the fun of doing them, you get an end game community that is pretty much the same as any previous MMORPG. That doesn't mean there are no friendly people online, but it effects the forums and the highest tiers of play.

Also, there are clearly some very vocal people who still do want to see things change in the game. Unfortunately, there are a ton of downers, cyber bullies, and draconian thought police on those forums, so any attempt to put a good idea out is ultimately drowned in a lot of negative posts and threads. I think a lot of feedback is given a negative light because of that.

As for OP's confusion on the whole deal with this game, its the marketing. The game is doing better financially because it has enjoyed simultaneous releases on the ps3 and PC, a second release on the PS4, and has a release for Xbox One coming sometime after. It is giving frequent content updates, and the developer does throw people a bone once in a while instead of completely ignoring the fan base. On top of which, the game has a better story than the horribly done FFXIII, and so in the eyes of fans its an improvement. However, it really isn't anything special in the story department when compared to other RPGs. Its just they are starting from such a low point that anything would be better to a fan.

Oh, my bad on the assumption I made there the way it read sounded that way to me. However still just gonna have to agree to disagree. Like I said a lot of what I see is not just giving feed back but unprovoked  nasty letters to SE with sometimes even name calling. So hence the back lash from the community. Like I said I have seen some nasty stuff from some of the fan boys as well but all this is mainly on the forums from what I've seen.

Glad to see that China will be on board real soon.

Before you get riled up about the title, its not a flaming or trolling thread. I have personally tried out the game, but I couldn't quite figure out what it was that made the game so appealing. It might be that I have a hard time understanding the appeal for most Asian mmos in general, but I keep hearing really good things about this game and I'm disappointed that I can't "get" then game. For those of you who like the game, is there something that sticks out for you? or does FFXIV just pull off the standard theme park mmo really well?

Well the underlined is probably why you can't get into it and I understand if you don't like the style and feel of the game world it's hard to want to play.

You know, what most of the people on this website cease to remember is the fact this is all opinion.  EVERYTHING on this site is based upon opinions, whether it be the articles or the comments.

"Oh, well FFXIV doesn't DESERVE to be on this list! X MMO from X years ago was better!"

That's your opinion.  It's not a fact, nor is it something that people should take with a higher weight than anyone elses say so.  You are not a special snowflake, as everyone has an opinion.

So try to keep the hateful comments and booing of other people to a minimum hmmm?  Everyone has their own opinion, and they are entitled to it... but not to the point of bashing other people with it because they don't share it.

Bravo sir, bravo

This article seems ridiculous like your trying to convince people that don't like it that they are wrong. Also every mmo forum on this sight has "those" people that come back over and over to tell everyone how much they hate, think it will fail, or go free to play any moment. Just come to the XIV , ESO, or Wildstar forums and you'll see.

The reason I quit playing both GW2 and FFARR, was the CRAFTING! Not only could you NOT make even close to the best gear or weps in the game, but it was also totally useless junk that you could not sell!

I can understand not liking the fact that you couldn't craft gear on par with raid stuff in XIV. However saying what you can craft is useless junk you can't sell is BS. You make tons of money with crafting with housing, glamour, materia, pre- raid gear, food and much much more.

I don't know if XIV belongs in the number one spot but I'm glad it's on the list. Not just because of the mini games but also because of the fact that they are classes that have skills to use with in those mini games and gathering.  Also I agree GW2 needs to not be on the list that being said it is an opinion piece.

However, there are some things that I did not like:

- the constant running around talking to 15 people just to finish a quest

- the fact that every npc which you talk to has about 6-7 paragraphs of text which you have to click-click-click through (at some point I got bored of reading everything)

I'm checking out the free trial and these are my dislikes as well, primarily the bottom one. The dialogue window is also so small that it's hard to read. I haven't figured out how to make it larger either.

The kill "x" quests seem to be more obvious as well. I don't know if it's because there are more of them or they just don't make an attempt to disguise them as something as.

My gladiator looks so goofy at the moment... he currently has green "padded" armor with what looks like purple oven mitts and purple leggings. The starter outfit looked great compared to this. Now I'm embarrassed to show my face around town. Which brings me to my one question... do mobs drop gear at all? So far all I've seen are crafting components.

I can understand not liking the fetch quests but for me I like the well written lore filled way they put them together its better than farmer bob needs you to dig holes, the end. However there are hunting logs, guildhests, leve's, and fates you can do and no the only things you can do to get gear is crafting, dungeons, quests, leve's, and buying from npc vender.

Why does this game have,

1. Quest markers over npc's heads. Eazily viewable on map. Shows exactily what level to start it. No requirement to start the quest, other than be high enough level.

2. A place to teleport to  every zone in the game. Everyone has access to it as soon as they touch the aetherite in there locations. Cost very little gill to use.

3. infinite amounts of arrows. You never have to restock on arrows in this game. Even though you shoot a ton, they somehow magically reappear on you.

4. Spells, abilities you automatically learn those as you level. You don't have to go and buy/hunt any of your stuff anymore.

5. A gps system that shows you exactly where to go to do a quest or other activities in the game. All the lev npc's have areas greyed out where you know exactly where to initiate um. Quest's that you have also show on map exactly where to go. It even has Q's over the mobs heads, so you know exactly which are quest mobs to kill.

6. 3 different database centers. One for EU, one for Jap, and one for USA. They separate the player's by where there located in the world. In ffxi everyone all over the world played on the same servers, but not in  ffxiv.

7. Nothing in the open world is remortly dangerous. You don't loose anything if you die. Only suffer a really small reapair fee. Mobs die pretty quickly. Mobs wont hardly chase you at all before they give up.

8. Dungeons that are all instanced. You can only enter a dungeon when you have a group of 4 or 8 people. Till end game, then that number goes up. You can never enter a dungeon by yourself. There is no camping nm's or farming/fishing/mining/digging up bones/harvesting at all in ffxiv's dungeons. They don't have multiple exits where you can pop out on different parts of the world. They are literally a set path, kill a few bosses and a warp out at the end. Oh and don't gota travel to um either, your ported there instantly and returned instantly to were you were before you enterd.

9. No mob lock. Everyone can just attack the same mobs. This one is a problem with hunts now, 100+ people attacking the same mob and complaining they die to quickly... No competition claiming mobs in the world anymore.

10. Gear that is just handed out to everyone, so don't really need to buy anything off the market boards to play this game. Quest's gears you up completely with your first class/job to 50. Dungeons/npc's pretty much take care of the rest.

I've been playing this game since it relaunched a year ago. I have literally changed the way I play it now though. I started a new character and just gona focus on crafting/gathering now. It sure is a refreshing change from what it was for me. I just really miss how ffxi was before abbysea, but times have changed and from what I've been hearing, this is what mmo's have become.

Hopefully someday an MMO will come along that brings back a lot of the things ffxi had with modern graphics.

Because this isn't an Ever Quest clone.

Funny, I don't consider this a returning to type game.  Returning to Rift or Wow, yes, but this seems a fairly new game to me.  Although I suppose considering the state of MMOs today the only new game is the one that just launched.

In a way your right it is new. However it is almost a year old now, and they are spiting out content with every patch like candy. If OP quit a long time ago there is more to do than most theme parks have that are a couple of years old.

Playstation deems very interested in stealing wii u fans and from that demographic. Microsoft seems caught up in an identity crisis and their apps are targeting an older demographic. That's for apps though. I'm interested in the games. The games for the adult demographic are only on pc. Console games will never have the level of sophistication found on pc. I watched the next generation come in, I had high hopes, I wanted to ditch pc, but as I am watching this all unfold, I am disappointed in consoles. I'm sure they will do just fine, but I had different expectations.

always disappointing to read posts like this.

Game is for kids!

I'm into more adult games!

Very disappointing.

Destiny is a decent solid game in my opinion. Very polished but you expect that from a console.

Lacks any real depth though and the loot system is more for the casual player, doesn't take long to get the best of what's available. No real risk v reward system.

Character advancement was the biggest let down for me though. not even a patch on COD series let alone PC MMO games, though I do realise it's never meant to be an MMO.

Gameplay wise the game is polished, looks great and is easy to get into.

PVP is fun but again lacks any real depth. best tactic is to throw a grenade and run in shooting or grab a vehicle. When you do have two decent teams, it can be fun.

This is only the first 8 levels though and I didn't get to see the moon. Hoping there is more exploration and advancement in the full game. customizing your character and having more choice could take this game to it's next level.

The game is fun for all ages.

That's not it my friend, I just expected Destiny to be more sophisticated and moreover games on the next generation consoles in general. Don't get me wrong I still love me some Mario Kart just not all the time.

Sophisticated? Mario Kart? You are comparing this game to mario kart? Look there are games on PC and consoles that are for kids. Lets not try to say PC's are for the grown ups while consoles are for kids please.

I expected a narrow-minded response like this. Try zooming out a bit. PC is a matured gaming platform, next Gen just released. How many games are you considering? No Mario Kart is not sophisticated, I am saying there is a time for both sophisticated and not, unfortunately consoles don't have many options right now and I don't think they ever will.

Right mario kart isn't but I disagree that Destiny isn't and we will just have to disagree on the never will.

A lot of crying about it not being on pc. With stuff like this "Im not going to support this new console world they are trying to create. They either bring it to pc or go to @uck Off". So console gamers have a game PC players don't. So what? Grow the hell up people. Sheesh!

I stopped playing awhile back are we talking the HUNT Registry system?I only remember it giving xp and nothing more as far as gear goes.I never witnessed anything as far as behavior or me first ,it was just a boring mechanic to aid the xp leveling system because at one point there was not enough quests to go around.

If they added something new to the Hunt system then i have to say kudos to them.I actually quit when i found out the whole game was nothing more than repeating instance fights with the various Avatars like Ifrit for example. That was far too boring for me and all i saw were others logging in at specific meet up times to do just that and then logoff, not the type of game or community i wanted to take part in.

They are open world NM's called marks. There are ranks such as B, A, and S rank. They all spawn on timers but in different locations. Every map area has it's own B, A, and S rank that spawns all in random locations. The higher the rank the better the rewards and everyone can take part. Of course the higher the rank the longer the spawn timer. If the rewards are nerfed or capped on this content thing will balance out.

FFX was the deepest story i have ever seen in a game ,however some aspects of combat i did not like.My favorite combat type is FFXI so if anything that uses tank/dps/heal i am good with  it .I just don't like anything speed spammy like having to hit meters at the exact right time as i like to relax when i play not strain my eyes for precision timing.

I did enjoy most FF games but of recent i do agree they are getting worse.I can't remember all the numberology  but the one with the guy with the chicken in his hair was just a cutscene movie type game and not very fun to play.Sure i give them credit as making all those CS's took a lot of effort ,far more than the effort i see in most modern games ,i just wish they put more of that effort into the rest of the game.

Changing outfits sounds cheesey but in reality, playing FFXI it was very common to make gear macros however not quite for the same reasons.

Square Enix has definitely NOT a FF franchise anymore but more so now a dev that has lost courage and goes more for copying ideas of other devs or just rehashing all the old ideas.I realize that OLD ideas are what most FF fans like the most and you will never please everyone as we all like different versions of the FF games.

I guess the perfect scenario would be if they release TWO versions of every game so we can have combat and class designs that meet a larger audience but this won't or is not likely to happen.

As stated they do have many teams, last i checked it was at least 7 teams so depending who is doing what you will get a mixed bag of old ideas.

Square Enix is still a great developer but imo they have lost touch with creativity and wit hthe current regime of Bosses they sent out memos to no longer be creative but to stick with tried and true ideas, this is imo a weak management team afraid  to make mistakes.

I agree with a lot of what you say here. However remember XI was basically patterned after ever quest with its own Ideas thrown into the mix. There is nothing wrong with going with some tried and true formulas in your game. Hell, SE and many others have been doing it for a long time.

Wait, why do you care about other people getting gear? I didn't know people still held on to this attitude anymore with so many games abandoning the common top tier raids = best gear system from yesteryear. Most games that have come out in the past 3-5 years offer similar gear for non raiders at this point. How is FFXIV doing any differently?

And here is a great example of someone reading the first few words of a post, assuming they know what the whole thing is about, and clicking "Reply". You end up posting a response that has nothing to do with what you're replying to.

He's talking about how the setup affects the behavior of people in the community who are trying to game the system to their own advantage, how it breeds hostility between players, etc.  All of which is absolutely true, though I'd say the hostile, toxic element has been here since Alpha/Beta. It's just that now, through their greed and "me first" attitudes, they're turning on each other, where as before they were turning on anyone who dared criticize anything about the game (which they still do...).

Where's that 'Reading Comprehension' article posted here on MMORPG.com some time back? I think it needs to be brought back, and made required reading before you're allowed to post, with a quiz at the end.

Well if you ask me the way people have gotten organized made hunting Link shells and try to work together to get these hunts done is a testament to how non-toxic this community is. The lodestone is where I see most of the toxicity in the community. That being said the hunts should be nerfed and will be most likely this coming tuesday.
