I love how almost always the only good news that Henrik has is the number of registered users on the forums.

"Just like in the beginning of 2013, we have in the second quarter could see a slightly positive trend as the number of registered members of the Forum of Mortal Online has increased slightly compared to the first quarter, which is obviously pleasing."

Well yeah considering it's impossible for the number of registered members to go down...

(Maybe not impossible for Star Vault)

I can't believe Henrik manages to fool people into investing in his company. I mean, he's not particularly good at it (anyone with a brain should be able to see through the registered forum count bragging), he apparently is just good at finding a bunch of people who are rich and really dumb

Lol.  A MO player has more say in what happens to MO than the CEO.  "Give my friends preferential treatment"
It seems like this game has reached rock  bottom in terms of general interest.  Action is dying off since the introduction of the "free to play" model, and there isn't even much activity here anymore.  That's not to say I think the game will die--I think it's still looking pretty bad, but clearly there are a select few willing to throw tons of money at the game, which may be enough to keep its doors open for a while, but even the excitement for this patch seems pretty low (before everyone realized it sucks)

Wow, it went from needing $974 to funded in one day... and it looks like it's all from Aralis' donation.  Dude was on the top of the rankings last month too, with a $2500 donation, he must have a lot of money, and be willing to throw it away.  Man, I  can overpromise and underdeliver just like Henrik, why not toss me a few grand :P

Did you model underwear?

HEH

prediction: ready or not, it will be pushed out on the 11th (the day before DF2 comes out)

Well, if anything can help Mortal Online slowly make its way to profitability, it's this (even this probably won't be nearly enough, given just how few players there are).  At the same time, lol wait for the community to become completely terrible with only griefers and PKers.  Hell, maybe I'll have to get in on the griefing action...  I love tears

People will get a chance to try this out right before DF2 comes out and then everyone leaves

I think if SV from day one just said. Our game is going to be broken and buggy but if you can set that aside there is some fun to be had here then people would see them in a different light.  Just admit what you cant do well, get that otr on the table and people will appreciate the things you do do well.

that is what they said pretty much, back in alpha. They also have a free trial.

A competent team should know what it can and can't finish.  No matter what you tell your fanbase, a buggy mess is unacceptable after 3 years.  They should have thought about programming something smaller. Maybe a MUD or something instead of a graphical MMO, which they clearly couldn't handle.

As for me, it's mostly because I think Henrik is a snake oil salesman.  He keeps promising things he can't do, failing to meet deadlines he imposes, and just generally is an incredible failure of a manager.  It's justice in my eyes to see MO doing poorly

You just described the lead of every sandbox game to come out in the past 5 years.

I agree totally.  The first competent team to make a sandbox MMO will stand to make a decent amount of money...  Won't be as big as WoW or anything like that, but I think an actual well-made sandbox MMO could easily do as well as EVE...

Let's put everything in perspective.  The top donor gave $1000, the next top gave $250, and then a few people gave $100, and most everyone else gave $50 or less.

That means SV has raised at most $2000, and probably will raise $2000-3000 total from this donation drive (that's probably being pretty generous, since everyone has seen the donation button by now).

How much development does that actually fund?

Well, their latest report says they lost 700000SEK in the first half of 2012, or 116000SEK every month.  That's $17000 USD lost every month.

So, people can do what they want with the money, but if they think it'll actually help development at all, they're being completely delusional.  This company is just losing too much money to get even close to breakeven, even with donations.

The $2000-3000 raised from this donation drive will be enough to keep SV afloat for an extra 4-5 days.  That's not a typo--it's enough money for less than a week.

Wow, it's nice that they post the highest donors.  Then we can see in real-time, just how little money they get... I'm willing to bet they get maybe a couple people donating $250.... which means the whole campaign might net them $1000-2000 total.... or enough to last about a day, given their current spending rates.

Well, we knew several months ago they were down to 3-4, so it doesn't surprise me too much that they're down to 2.  Paratus works with them too, but I think he lives in Canada or something?

Well, I'm sure it'll net them some money, but there's no way it will give them more than a month of extra leeway.  They're still hemmorhaging money to the tune of $30K USD every month, if I remember correctly, and no donation scheme is going to make up that difference--they need regular subscribers, there's no way around that..  I'd be surprised if they raised more than $10K.

I was gonna say well maybe Henrik will rage and just sell the project, but then again who the hell would want to touch any code that Seb has made.

I actually think SV tried to sell MO (or get bought out by a bigger company) a couple times before.  They were at Gamescom last year, in particular, and they went silent for a few weeks.  Rumor has it they were trying to sell the game.

This is a dumb idea because SV won't be able to create a sustainable business off of this sort of donation.  It may make them break even for, say, a month (doubtful, if I remember correctly breaking even just one month would require $10K more than they already get now), but then what?  Keep asking for donations every month?

The other reason this is a dumb idea is because it isn't going to populate the game world.  All it will do is keep a braindead game on life support.

The idea that lowering the monthly fee would bring in more players is just plain wrong.  They could actually increase there monthly fee if they really wanted to.  Right now with the exchange rates I believe Mortal Online has the highest monthly fee of any MMO.

If Mortal went f2p it would have more players, but no one wants that.  Most Mortal players hate item shops.

The very idea that SV is in financial trouble is wrong.  The numbers they release from time to time are just that, numbers.  It really isn't that expensive to keep a game server up and running.  The only real problem is the cost of continued developement.  If SV gets more subs that would generally mean more developers, less subs, less developers until its just Henrik and Seb sharing a cubicle.

Since Mortal Online is about to release the next major expansion and number of developers in SV hasn't significantly changed in the past year I think its safe to say that SV will be around for a long time.

I agree that lowering the monthly fee won't actually do much to MO's numbers.  The problem with MO isn't price, it's public interest in the game.  There are just too many bugs and too much of a learning curve for your typical newbie for a really healthy population within the game, even if you only charged $5/month.  As far as current subscribers, they buy into the MO concept enough and are strong enough fans that they'll pretty much pay any price to play the game.

And I agree with your second point to a degree--obviously SV has been operating for quite a while on a shoestring budget, and may be able to for a bit still.  But, financials are nothing but "numbers"--at the end of the day, you're going to need to make moer money than you spend, and they have yet to actually do that except for the quarter when MO released. They've got to turn this ship around eventually, they can't always operate in the red.

90 people is more than perpetuum has online most of the time so color me impressed that mortal online still maintains this many people. Not sure what everyone's fascination is with kicking people while they're down. MO was made by a bunch of guys who are basically new at game design, and they put in tons of manhours and cash into something that gets shit on by people like you who happen to not like the game. If you don't like it don't pay attention to it, stop posting on the boards, and forget about it. Stop shitting on something others enjoy.

For me, it's that Henrik is a classic snake oil salesman.  Hypes his own stuff up so much, and scams money out of investors and customers by saying the Next Big Patch will fix everything and make MO bug-free and fun.  The sooner people wake up from his scammy ways and Star Vault goes down the tubes, the better.

Granted, a Christmas miracle could happen and we could see them fold early. That'd be a Christmas miracle for most MMO players to have one more crappy MMO out of the market. Or a Christmas miracle for Henrik, where his daddy finances the game for some more time. Gotta love keeping a loser in the race because his daddy can do it for him.

Henrik contacted me about this post - specifically about you bringing his family into the debate!

'Gotta love keeping a loser in the race because his daddy can do it for him. '

Henrik has asked that I try to ask you to stop making personal comments about his family - and his Father specifically.  It's also not terribly nice to be calling him a loser either.  With the strict Moderation over here - I would have thought it would be picked up.

Henrik has never received any kind of investment from his Father in the company.  SV is listed on the stock excahnge and generated investments in that and other ways.

Do you think we can leave his family out of any further posts please?  And please, please stop the  'daddy can do it for him' .

Thanks in anticipation

Theia

If Henrik has never received an investment from his dad, then why did he have nearly 200K shares of STVA.B at one point? http://www.aktietorget.se/InsiderDetail.aspx?ID=1253&Company=138

Ulf is a part of the company.  His role in MO is as fair to talk about as Henrik's. [Mod Edit]

So going to post-Dawn levels counts as "exploding" nowadays?

But seriously, we'll see what happens in 2-3 months... Nobody questions Henrik's ability to hype up a patch--it's making a good patch with lasting interest that seems to be impossible for Star Vault
