Those ideas you had years ago, you were not likely to be the first to think of them.

When to know when you have something special?  When you get feedback from users who tell you it is special.  It is all too easy to stroke you own ego and say such and such idea is special.

I'm sure I wasn't.  But having an idea is one thing - and acting on it is another entirely.  I don't care if 3 million people had the idea - the point is, no-one has acted on it for over a decade.

I won't get feedback from users until I have something for them to 'use' - another argument for at least having a stab.

What's scarce is not merely people taking action.  Lots of people are taking action and have Kickstarter pages for future vaporware games to tell you about it.  What's scarce is people actually implementing their ideas and making them work as they intended.  Yes, that does involve taking action, but it also requires being able to implement your ideas, not merely trying to do so.

Well ideas are a dime a dozen except for those who have so few ideas that they think they are diamonds.

The problem, ime, is that there are far more ideas than time and other resources.

I've been wondering when we decide that our idea is something more special than just a 'wouldn't it be cool if.....'.  In other words, when do we decide that a concept is worth pursuing and dedicating a significant proportion of our time to?

About a decade ago, a friend and I spent a lot of time talking through our idea for an MMO.  It was all very grand, and had ideas which just couldn't be matched by the technology of the day.  Fast forward to the present and many of the features we talked about are now appearing in games in almost exactly the same way we'd envisioned them (and we're talking some pretty big titles).  Should I take this as a part-validation of my ideas, and try pursuing the idea after all?

It's a strange feeling to hear other gamers talk about features and how they cool they're going to be, when I've been sat on an idea like that for ages - and I'm sure I'm far from being the only one whose experienced this.

What do you guys and gals think?

So we still have to push buttons?  No thanks!!!!!

:D

What do I think? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... You make an assumption you should live with the results of it.  Go ahead and uninstall that game and never return to it.

I think its just the fact sandbox isn't the mainstream mmo I guess but its what I prefer over a themepark mmo any day. Another reason could be because its an indie company making this game no one really knows about and its in alpha stage of the game still not even in beta stage yet.

What is everyones thoughts on this?

Is it really that old of a mmo style that alot of mmo gamers nowadays do themepark mmos? (no offense intended)

I know there is still a good audience who prefer sandbox mmos but I mean......

Should they start trying to hype the game up a little bit and advertise it for more people?

Or are some of you guys happy of the fact that the game is like under the radar?

I think they should hype up the game and advertise it out there a little more to get more people on this game, star citizen's popularity is crazy, I don't want the repop to get that big I just want them to increase the popularity some more on the repop.

I think water seeks its own level. IN the case of a question like yours, the issue is YOU.  You expect it to be a certain way then ask why it doesn't match what you think it should.  To solve your problem, change your expectation.

I bought the game hoping for a successor to City of Heroes. What I got was an ARPG designed for play on a console.

I never renewed my subscription after my initial month.

That's putting it kindly.  It was like an ARPG, except loaded with slow responding standing induction attacks and summons.  Ineffectual builders and induction spenders.  The worst of both worlds.

Those looking for CoH 2.0 got CoH 0.7b.  Double whammy for those of us who loved the Champions PnP game from which it  was based.

And then they pretty much abandoned it.  I'd like to think this is a sign that they actually want to do something to bring it up to date, in someway, at least.

In the end, when it comes to CoH vs. CO, I'll quote "Walk Hard":

"The wrong kid died!"

I agree with the CoH 0.7b part.  They should have learned from CoH but it seems they didn't learn the right thing.  Oh well, never look back at CO for me!

I think a subscription based game is a service operation.

Actually, the F2P developers have always been far more in touch with the fact that MMOs are a service not a product than the western devs. This may be because the box, sub, expansion model has worked so well in the context of sell product, maintain product, sell add-ons. The whole sub model is pretty much built around maxing out box sales and buying time til the expansion box sale. When you look at the varying exceptions within that model - Asheron's Call (yes, there were 2 xpacs), Lineage 2, EVE Online - you see a lot more of a service and community focus.

It is a service.  It is amazing how many feel entitled to free service.

Lately and as in "the last few years" I've found myself enjoying F2P products, particularly chr progression multiplayer games over B2P/P2P products. As some already know here I've not spent $ on a new MMO for the last 4 years and 3 months, despite the fact I've been enjoying more MMORPG's than most here over the last 14 years.

From 2001 to 2011 I recall spending $ on MMORPG's like EQ2 (invalid Walmart code, never played it), Ultima Online, SWG, Guild Wars 1, Sims Online, FFXI, Aion, EVE, WOW, DC Universe Online and I'm sure there are some others there in between. The interesting thing is how from 2012-2015 I've found myself playing F2P MMORPG's and ARPG over B2P/P2P despite easily being able to afford all products.

DC Universe Online, Path of Exile and Marvel Heroes Online been these F2P MMO's for me that have given me more entertainment than WOW, which I did spend $100 for WOD expansion + 3 month of sub. So, there is no deniable truth that at least for me the F2P products are working.

I don't think making a bad game f2p makes the game somehow good.  I think there are too many people who are just cheap..

+1000.

It is their house and therefore their rules.  If the OP wants to take a crap in their house, they should expect a reaction.

I still don´t see how OP takes " a crap" in "their" forum (Steam´s forum, actually). Sadly, I know this iteration of Elite very well, I was lured into getting the overpriced Kickstart beta with lots of awesome promises, and was refused a refund after I saw how the product actually turned out, so what he says is 100% spot on. If he can´t tell people what´s in a game and what´s not in the game on a forum, it´s purest censorship for profit, or at least for damage control.

Seriously, this game pricing is an insult (60$), I just said in another thread I won´t pay 60$ for GTA V on PC either because it released a year ago on consoles, but compared to the shallow product that is Elite at 60$, GTA V seems like the bargain of the decade.

GTA V is a rich living world with endless content, stories unfolding, amazing mission design and endless side activities around every corner, a truly living simulated world, while Elite is a dead void with bad AI ships, a bunch of "Fedex" missions thrown in that make SWTOR´s click-this-kill-10-rats quests look like a sophisticated strategy game in comparison. Plain and simple, this game should sell for 12-15$, it´s early access and clearly unfinished. If they are ever going to put more gameplay in, they could charge 20-30$ at most, but selling this at the price of an AAA new release is insulting.

That's ok.

Why not just hook your computer up to a big screen download controller support mod or addon and save your self $20.00 + Xbox/PS4 network user fees?

[mod edit]

The only reason I see someone buying the console if you allready own a computer version is because maybe the computer you own might not be up to par, other then that I really don't see the point, the controller, big screen, voice chat can all be done on a computer, this is not 2003, so WHY?

Well I run multiple screens for development. And the big screen is on with inside the NBA.  I couldn't have that on if it was connected to this computer.

The passage of time has had a huge effect on MMORPG's.

People like to rail on the numbers of players from MMO's as if the games were made in a vacuum. As if the passage of time and the increase of computing power and adoption of more technology hasn't impacted anything.

Example; it is common on this board for people to state things like, UO wasn't popular it only had about 250k subs. without acknowledging most people were playing the game with a 486 equivalent computer or a 28k or 56k modem.Home computers were no where near as prevalent as they are today and only early adopters had one. At the time adoption of the internet was just taking off and AOL was still sending 3.5 floppy disks to everyone that they even thought owned a computer. Cable modems were rare as chicken teeth.

Completely different than the situation today.

Example two; Another popular way the passage of time is ignored on this forum is when people ignore the fact that 5 or 6 years passed between the launch of UO to EQ and again from the launch of EQ to WoW. People like to pretend that those large blocks of time are insignificant. The increase of the graphical power and speed of the computers at the same time makes it very significant. When people bought new computers they often wanted new games that pushed the boundaries of what the new machine could do.

This situation is still evolving to this day. Star Citizen has stated they want to push the limit of what a modern computer can do.To a lot of people that want to play SC this means a new PC is in order.

5 or 6 years?  It was 1997 vs 1999.  Then 2004 for wow.

Not using because the site lives from ads. And blocking them would mean I'm not 'giving my money' from the impressions of the ads. I only remove what really bugs me and that is flash ;-)

Thanks, man! We appreciate it. If you love the site, please consider adding us to your whitelist. :)

Remember I think it was about 20 months ago, there was what you guys said, something from on of the ads that would cause visitors computers to start downloading something?  That is why I have to protect my system.   For me, my security comes before your ad revenue.

I view MOBA's like I view FPS games - it's not what makes them the same you should judge on, it's what makes them different.

Which is why Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm is the only MOBA I've liked, and will play.

+1.  I see MOBA's like FPS games.  Games have to differentiate themselves from other games while sometimes having to be similar so they are not too different.

At my age, I  don't have the reflexes to play FPS or MOBA at a competitive level.

With Guild Wars 2 being a standard vertical progression mmo and Guild Wars 1 is not being updated, there is a lot of horizontal progression fans wanting a true experience of that kind of mmo.

Though it seemed like Everquest next could have filled that hole, i doubt it now.

And I do know about Warframe, but it doesn't hit that sweet spot as well.

So If there is any developer (any one that can make games) that wants to make a true horizontal progression experience mmo, there are a lot of horizontal progression   fans that will be will be happy to play such an mmo.

I hope a dev reads the posts.

Don't make the mistake horizontal progression is more then just  a cap on statistics.

Input needed on what makes/made GW great to play.

Definitely Defenders in City of Heroes. So many combinations, so much utility. My favorite combinations were Illusion/Kinetic (underappreciated, combation healer/buffer and backup tank, plus lots of control) and Storm/Power(enemies who can't stand up can't hurt you).

Plus the mind control powers to get the enemies fight with each other!

I love MMOs and I love single player games and the more they learn from one another and adapt to improve, the better off all of us gamers will be in the long run."

I think we are finally on the uphill climb.  The last year and a half has introduced us to some brave Indie developers who are trying, some with success, which will hopefully revitalize the industry.  Perhaps hitting bottom was the best thing that could have happened.

How about we give the game 6 months to see how well this game holds up.

One of the big things that I feel is wrong with most MMO's is the speed of character advancement. In my opinion, it is far too rapid. A race lasting only a few days to a couple of weeks to max level and end game. I am hoping Pantheon bucks this trend and significantly slows the leveling process to a rate closer to that of Everquest at launch.

I feel a slower leveling speed has a number of benefits: players become more familiar with their characters and the world in which they live. Characters have time to acquire nice gear, and enjoy the benefits of that gear before out leveling it. More time can be spent in each area before madly dashing off to the next location, time most efficiently spent in a group.

Personally, I would prefer to see 8+ hours of active game time in a group required to gain a single level starting in the mid-levels and 24+ hours of active game time in a group required to level as character start to approach the level cap. I also fully support the idea of hell levels and experience loss upon character death. Solo players could be looking at double to triple these time requirements depending on class and player skill (not efficient, but possible).

What is everyone else's opinion on the subject?

I am for the long journey of leveling.  Today's modern game seems to need instant everything.
