"Why not skill based?" You really asking?

Classes and classless systems are fundamentally the same. Both are based on sets of skills that are separated by restrictions. While classes prevent mixing certain skill sets altogether, classless systems more like discourage them by imposing restrictions and penalties.

Why would you put in restrictions? Well, all systems have some restrictions. If there weren't any, one of two things are likely to happen:

  1. Tthe majority of the playerbase would be playing with a very narrow set of "best builds" because there is nothing to stop them from cherry picking the best skills in the game.
  2. All the skills have to be "toned down" to ensure that no such power builds arise. And while this may sound easy on paper, it is very difficult in practice.

Restrictions are a way to balance those builds and create niches for multiple distinct playstyles. And here comes the big revelation: So far, systems with classes (hard restrictions) have been more successful in creating more balanced and more varied playstyles.

Can you give examples of MMOs where that is true? As for the second half of that statement, there are point caps, time, player skill and other factors that limit having everything maxed, but I really would like to know which skill-based MMOs you are basing the highlighted part on since you have made that claim several times.

AC

UO tank mage.

Even WOW, if you look at each class, while there are 3 specialization, at least for the DPS classes, one always win out and most players will just do that. I still remember the mage players are switch back & forth between fire & arcane depending on which one coming out ahead in a new patch.

Imagine if WOW has no classes .. there will be only ONE dps spec.

The UO Tank Mage is the classic example of the problem within the mmorpg game domain.  Although I suspect some of the players who "wonder they there are not more skill based games" know this but really want tank mage like characters.

In this day and age of video games, MMORPG, FPS, MOBA etc etc..

when most games are using the free to play model...

when a company comes and asks for $150, to alpha test a game, from another market, in which it failed in the original market...

I have to ask....what the flip did you expect?

The second I seen $150 for alpha access....I knew that was a cash grab, for  a defunct product, that would not last any longer than the alpha period of the game itself.

This is not an "i told you so", but more of a curiosity on how this wasn't obvious?

So you didn't buy the $150 alpha? If so, that is a misleading title and therefore a trolling post. /reported.

I agree with this. For me, after TBC it really started to go down hill.

Incoming thought provoking topic...if you aren't interested in engaging in an intellectual manner your comment will be ignored.

I usually don't post here. I normally just browse around...looking at forum posts and game reviews. Recently I have noticed the influx of "sub-par MMOs" coming out...Or at least it would seem. But anyway, to my original question:

Why don't people respect the fact that we all are entitled to our own objective and subjective opinions? Some may allow emotions to cloud their judgement...some may look at the game with a completely keen eye and strategically point out the flaws in an articulate manner.

I'll get to the point...What bothers me most is the idea that we must put one another down with harsh comments and words that don't even pertain to the topic at hand...I may not like SWG for whatever reason, but the next guy who thinks SWG is the best game ever may come in and comment "You clearly are an idiot, and I have no reason to waste my time with you and your retarded opinions."

Why can't we intellectually discuss games, their nature and what SPECIFICALLY makes us happy about them? Could it be reasonable to think that part of the reason MMOs haven't been as "good" recently is because we are too busy nitpicking each other for stupid reasons instead of engaging in intellectual conversation?

Imagine you were a developer looking at these forums for guidance about what the community might want (I believe this is the biggest MMO forums out there...or at least one of the biggest). What will you find? Intellectual conversation? Probably not. Instead, you find people arguing about how their game is superior because they liked it more than your game. Could this be part of the reason developers are having a hard time figuring out what the community wants? Obviously cash grabs are existent- I am not ignoring those, but I can see this being a legitimate problem.

Here is my call to action...Let's try to spark intellectual conversation. Let's try NOT to put others down and try to explain in depth why their opinion may be wrong...or right! We are the consumers! We will be purchasing the MMOs, not the developers. Let's show them what we want, instead of griping among ourselves.

Obviously this post doesn't cover the entire community...This is just an observation of mine that I decided I would like to share.

Thoughts?

Devs don't look at random forums for random posts for input.  They have more ideas than they could ever implement.  Players, including yourself, have an extreme view of their importance in the process.

Great there is a lot of passion there, the question remains does that translate into good game design?

Wow, it only took 3 posts for this negative line of thinking. Don't worry, it won't be good enough for you.

Wasn't Age of Conan an action combat game before GW2? Or Tabula Rasa,Darkfall?,Mortal,Tera?

Were they?  GW2 is the game that I remember bringing action combat into the mainstream.

Ok. I am calling bullshit.   You got called on your bs claim and now you add additional qualification of mainstream.  GW2 wasn't first.  Got it. Stop trying to turn it into a claim.

I should qualify my post:
I've supported 6+ kickstarters that successfully raised their funds. All were games or gaming tech. All provided really awesome updates and continuing enthusiasm for the project. Four are in alpha and I've had access to play in those alpha worlds.

Whether they end up going live someday I don't know. Was it worth it to throw some bucks at them? Yes, no regrets. Your mileage may vary. :)

I have supported kickstarters but I do have some doubts.    If people were trying to raise money with traditional startup fundraising they would have to have a lot of upfront documentation of a business plan and a design document for their mmorpg.  People handing over their hard earned money to crown funding should demand that as well.

I haven't seen any numbers that support the idea that there are less people playing mmos. There are a ton of game people are playing. I guess what you are saying is YOU can't find a game you like (how sad) therefore the industry is in a steady decline. (OMG the end of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

"Good old City of Heroes. It wouldn’t be a proper list about the “Best ___” in MMOs without this game making an appearance."

Showing your bias much? Sorry but while it was a cool game, stating it belongs in EVERY best ____ list is just plain wrong. There is a reason it doesn't exist anymore.

If you're referring to NCSoft being money grubbing assholes, then yes, there's a reason. Otherwise, no.

However, as much as I loved City of Heroes, I really think lists like these shouldn't include games like CoH and SWG that are no longer running.

I can see that. MA was fine in COH but I had issues with it. I think because it gave rewards and xp that it killed the real world. Killed in the sense that people weren't playing those other parts to the same degree as after MA. Should have not added rewards/XP.

Agreed with most of the article, VG will always hold a spot in my heart. When it first released, I thought it would be the future of MMOs. I still believe that if it had gotten the proper fixes, attention, and was lucrative enough to warrant expansions it could have been. What if VG SoH has led the MMO genre down a completely different path than what it is currently progressing down?

As for the visuals though, I have to disagree. The graphics didn't start to look dated for me until just a couple of years ago. Even the slightly awkward character animations (the half giants looked like they were running with a stick up their butts) weren't a big deal. When the game released I was stunned by the visuals. The sheer scope of the architectural constructions and landmarks (the port of Khal!) had me just sit down on more than one occasion and simply experience the scenery and listen to the environment. IIRC, this game melted the GFX card on my first PC as a teen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE3MZf6q7Bk

Also (IIRC) when this game released it was the first MMO I had played that had flying mounts across all areas. Not even WoW had them in Azeroth at that point. The prospect of having an entirely new axis to explore was amazing to me.

The beauty of your belief is that you can believe until the end of time without having to prove it.

I really don't think I can do these particular games anymore, now that I'm 28 I don't seem to have the stamina to play without a break like I used to and this sort of problem is exclusively to do with the level grind. You want to get to max level but you can't because it's deliberately made to take forever to get to. I'm not saying it's a bad progression system but because they are made to take so long, it's become off-putting to me. In between questing becomes repetitive (I tend to not group up with random people) and your trying to get to point A to point B as quick as possible all the time because you want to ding to the next level. But what annoys me is rest experience, I just don't like it, how is that suppose to help me, you don't get much from it if you log in every day or have to travel to a rest hub to get it every so often, it's only useful for those that haven't played for a longer while.

Obviously level grinding is a problem that will never disappear from MMO's and then I think back to the famous South Park episode, Make Love, Not Warcraft, now that kind of longevity of playing a game non-stop without a break is just insane. The point is when I play a game like WoW or anything else like that, I play for a long time and then I become extremely tired, I go bed about 12:30am - 1am (although I have always accidently purpose go at 1:30am which is the latest I ever do) and then after getting up in the morning, I'm still tired.

Don't get me wrong, I've always welcomed myself to these games but my body is telling me I should stop. :<

I really dont like it when people think they are speaking for everyone else, personal opinions are fine but dont presume to be speaking for the masses like you are doing with the constant use of "we".

Since I'm part of this community just like you I can use the word "we" since it's correctly used. Dictionary.com can come in handy to clarify its definition.

You can also use the term I. Now when you write we, are you saying yourself, or are you playing it as if you have a group of people you are speaking for? It is better communication to speak for yourself. If you represent a group, credentials make it look legit vs some self-appointed group advocate.

I much, much, much prefer the City of Heroes trinity of Crowd Control, Support, Damage. I can only think of one fight in the game actually needed a tank (Arachnos in the Statesman TF); for pretty much everything else in the game, you could get by with various combinations, though having at least one from all three was generally easier.

I loved CoH as well as IMO it allowed us to have many types of groups. OP: You might want to check out what Richard Bartle wrote: http://www.youhaventlived.com/qblog/2010/QBlog190810A.html
The players are by far the biggest single problem with online gaming.

How about you get off your lazy ass and find out for yourself if this game was made for you. Rather then coming here telling people why you should play this game. Who the hell are you?

Too lazy to think for himself. Plus, none of us are getting paid to act as salesmen.

Yeah, never understood the "sell me this game" notion neither.  Ridiculous if you ask me with all the tools you have at your disposal to find out for yourself.

You probably also get mad when people throw a subject and say "discuss" ? Maybe, for your blood pressure, you should just avoid those topics. Some people actually enjoy discussing them.

Unless you were just trolling, lol.

seems like you are bothered by something...

Look at this example -> http://www.theprodukkt.com/kkrieger

It's a 96kb single-level game using this method back from 2002. And now compare this to Unreal Tournament for example, which uses way more bits and bytes to achieve the same results for a single level.

Or you could look at what Daniel Lawrence did with only 8k ram back in 78-82 with his game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telengard

People just need to stop acting like everything has to compare to WoW to be considered successful.

I don't have to give them a shot.

Ever notice, when a female gets on a voice chat system, the general conversation quickly reaches the gutter and below? I have also met way too many players that engage their mouth before engaging their brain.

Overall, it is not a bad idea, and I don't mind VOIP too much. Too many players can not handle themselves in mixed company, though, for it work effectively.

You are very correct on that. I heard some disturbing things said to women in voice that drove them away. Even after others told them to shutup. For me, I have lost patience with the trash talkers, the politics and others who seem to be talking because they don't like silence. Let's focus on the job at hand and after that, if you want to talk about social topics, get in a separate channel.
Those good old SSI games were great. Let's wish them a lot of luck and hope for something great!
