For me its easy: The fact every game bascally tries to be world of warcraft, which means we end up with bascally wow in a new skin. Pretty much every mmo does this now, FF14 is just the most recent one. Then there is also the fact mmo's that aren't wow clones end up gimping themselves and amputating parts of itself it to become a wow clone.
Personallty I wish more mmo's would up the barrier of entry for content, today its at a all time low due to wow, and pretty much all mmo's that try to clone it. WoW as a game itself is not bad, but I hate HATE WoW because of how it pretty much destroyed the genre single handeldy. As I said wow as a game in and of itself is not that bad, its just the effect its had on the genre has pretty much destroyed it. I get more of a sense of accomplishment from silly phone games like brave frontier, gun girlz, devil maker tokyo and games like those, because when you achieve something it feels good, especally if you do it as a free player. Usually this involves getting a unit you want or upgrading a unit alot. When you manage to finally get it though, it usually helps a ton.

I used to be heavily into mmorpgs, but now a days I just can't keep intersted in them, mostly because every one since wow has pretty much felt like wow in a diffrent skin, and to be honest I am sick of it. Tired of never having any choices or exploration options, tired of easy as hell content that is so boring to go thru because its not all that diffculty if you have a brain and pay a lil bit of attention to whats going on. Tired of the entire quest hub crap, like wow and its ilk where you just go from one town to the next doing quests. What ever happened to the journey mmorpgs used to provide when leveling? I used to love running around in ff11 on my lil white mage once I got sneak and invis just checking maps out when i was bored.

I tried to go back to ff14 a few months ago but I got bored after a day or 2 for reasons I mentioned above, just couldn't seem to get interested in it, kinda sucks too cuz i paid for a server xfer to join a buddy of mine who ended up always busy.

Can't you just run a software firewall and block windows from accessing the net to send said info? IMO it should be against the law for them to snoop into your privacy like that, it just should not be allowed.
+1, I would love some of that stuff in a mmo, mmorpgs today are pretty much nothing but wow clones where all you do is click quests and go from hub to hub till endgame, there is no reason to explore because there is nothing to find out there. Closest game to witcher 3 combat would be tera, you can dodge attacks, some classes can block, The reaper class literally has a counter where if you time it right you lash back with a high damage attack while nullifying the damage you would have taken.

I am thinking of giving aion another try but I got some questions.

1: How are the 3 new classes?

2: Are the US servers still infested by BRs(brazilians) or did they finally get cleaned out?

3: does spiritmaster still rock?

Its rather easy: Casuals. Its where the market is now, and casuals tend to be the whinest bunch of players in gaming these days. If anything is remotely diffcult they whine and moan until it gets dumbed down for them. Casuals also hate to have to spend any time commitment, its why most mmo's these days you hit lv cap in like 2 days.

By 2040 we'll probally have dot hack level tech, or maybe even sao. in dot hack it was a vr helm and a controller. in Sword art online everything was controlled by thought, it literally took over your bodys 5 senses, you could touch, smell, see, hear, and feel the wind on your skin. It also had a user/server configurable pain simulator that would cause you pain when you got hurt in the game. I'd suspect by 2040 we'd have something very simmlar to sao, I don't know about the taking over the senses so you feel your actually there, but the rest of it might be a possability.

Also the day we have something like sword art online technology wise, even if its not mmorpgs the human race as a whole is screwed.

I think the player should never drop loot, however, when you kill someone loot their body to get loot from a pool of stuff a monster their level would drop instead, maybe some pvp currency medals and such too. I don't get why people think they are h3r4c0r3 cuz they can drop all gear on death. If anything that system causes the game to just die, we've seen it happen to so many pvp mmo's they just usually die within a month, 2 tops usually.

Not playing one either. No idea if and when I'll pick another MMO up. Going to depend on if anything ever releases again that gave me the feeling FFXI, Vanilla WoW, or  Vanilla EQ2 did.

Major reasons I'm not playing beyond that?:

1) Communities in these games definitely are not what they were a decade ago. Heck, they aren't what they were 5-8 years ago for that matter.  No reason to play an MMO if the community is so toxic you can't stand to talk to anyone in the game.

2) They're all same-old-same-old at this point. I don't even mean mechanics-wise, I mean a literal cut and paste of linear boring grind to "end game" asap and then grind end game. Somewhere along the way, MMOs became about end game and not about enjoying the world, the journey, the story and the people around you.

3) Small, linear zones laden with gating and invisible walls. Yes, because I want to feel like I'm playing a game in this tiny tunnel with quests and mobs oh-so- convienently spaced along that path, rather than a huge world I could go explore.

4) Time - I'm working on a book series right now. I'm raising a 2 year old toddler who gave up naps 6 months ago and is extremely high-needs-high-energy (yes, more than most 2 year olds, trust me). I could set aside my writing to play at night, but why bother? Working on my book is more interesting than any of the MMOs out there at this point.

I feel the same on 1,2 and 3. 4 isin't an  issue for me I got too much free time if anything. I'll also add that I feel msot "mmos" have lost the mmo aspect for the most part, in most of them you don't really need other players till level cap. What happened thr the classics like ff11 before square wrecked it by making it a joke? Where you had to group up to do anything really. The leveling up also felt like a journey since its not over in 2-3 days, well now a days you can go from 1-99 in a day so now it doesn't count, I am talking back before Abbysea came out, thats what ruined FF11. The community in FF11 also was not very toxic like most, mainly because you required people to do things, and if you had a bad rep people would avoid you like you had ebola or some other highly infectious illness.

I also miss big worlds with stuff to find via exploring that are not on the beaten path of the quest hub. FPS games for example are just as bad, most fps games your doing nothing but walking down the same tunnels over and over, no secrets, no hidden things or anything of the sort anymore. See this image for example:

I believe all the casuals have ruined mmorpg and gaming in general, since every devoloper pretty much caters to their whiney asses, resulting in mostly horrifically dumbed down games coming out that hold your hand every step of the way.

What a crock of shit,  FF14  has a great and robust  playerbase because it is a well designed game. (dispite your personal opinion)  an IP's drawing power might create strong 1st day box sales, but if the game is shit then the players will leave. Has that happened to FF14? nope.

Did it happen to ESO? yup, because it was poorly designed. . .

ESO was honestly doomed from the start, the lack of modability, and how the single player games play just cannot be recreated properly in a mmo setting.

I never said FF14 was bad persay, its is just a generic wow clone though, I don't really see anything that sets it above wow gameplay wise, graphically it slaughters wow, but thats it. I've gotten chars on mutiple servers to level cap in FF14, so I am in a decent place to judge it. Most of the time I played it, it never really did much to impress me, other than graphics its bascally wow with a new skin like alot of mmorpgs end up being these days. Also don't be too sure on that if its bad, most of the ff games after the snes haven't been all that great, yet they still sell millions, even FF13 that got a abyssmal rating sold really well. The point I am trying to make is, devs need to move away from just copying wow and try something new. Indie devs try it but a small team making a mmorpg is no easy feat. The Repopulation has promise, but the devolopment of the game is extremly slow causing loss of interest.

I would love a mmorpg that played like dot hack gu, or sao: hollow fragment gameplay wise. I am tired of these mmorpg's where all you do is go from quest hub to quest hub and thats about it, this is my problem with FF14, because thats all you do for the most part.

Its a double edged sword,  indie mmo's like to be indie because they can do what they want, but because they lack the budget a big publisher could provide it takes forever for it to come out.

I honestly though FF14 1.0 was a more interesting game than what it is now. Mostly because of the fact it was more open and less going quest hub to quest hub on rails like it is now. Sadly casuals like to have their hands held at pretty much all times, if there is not some arrow telling casuals exactly where to go, they will quit cuz they are unable to think for themselves most of the time. Its even getting pretty bad in single player games.

I will always prefer a P2P or B2P over F2P. Still, F2P games are generally low quality overall and are F2P for a reason. No one would play them otherwise.

I don't think I've ever read something so short and so wrong at the same time.

Monetization and quality have nothing to do with each other.

And yet, still somehow works out as I said regardless. But this is just my personal opinion. I've never played an F2P game that wasn't F2P for a reason. AAA quality doesn't come free.

There are many AAA MMO's that used to be P2P though.  They went F2P, because people didn't deem their gameplay design, worthy of a subscription.

That doesn't mean that their animations, models, services, worlds, and other things, were of bad quality.  It was pretty much the overall game design, such as quest-hubs, or themepark elements, etc.  This is what made people stop playing the same old designs, or "wow-clones" as people like to call them.

A prime example would be Wildstar.  A P2P game with AAA quality that is on life support, due to their hardcore endgame designs.

Now look at F2P, and you'll still see some quality content coming out, whether it's dungeons, art, models, character customization (Black Desert), innovative designs (Archeage in some respects), etc.

Eastern MMO's have come a long way in quality and innovation.  Moonlight Blade, Black Desert, Revelations, Swordsman Online, Age of WuShu, etc.  How anyone can think these are bad quality is beyond me.  When i think of bad quality, i look at all the current Kickstarter projects. lol.

People are confusing restrictions with quality.  F2P usually have restrictions, but that doesn't necessarily mean the MMO is of bad quality.

The main problem is people are sick of all the generic wow clones, and other than indie dev teams thats all these guys shit out. Even wildstar once you get over the combat system is just yet another generic boring wow clone, its why it flopped so hard in such a short time. FF14 wouldnt have survived as a sub game if it had any other name. The Final fantasy name is pretty much the only thing keeping the game from going f2p. With FF14's gameplay if it was any other title it'd have been f2p a while ago. I got mutiple jobs at level cap in FF14 as well. Got tired of it. Its been like half a year since i've bothered with mmo's last one I played was wildstar and that lasted till halfway thru the 2nd month after release before I just lost interest due to how repetive it is.

I do however play the shit out of dungeon fighter online. I tried Elsword but I feel elsword is kinda crap compared. I'd love a new sidescrolling beatem up mmorpg like DFO. Even if its a themepark like most are, there is some satisfaction of stringing together huge combos and such, which is something the generic wow clone lacks.

All in all I hate world of warcraft, the game itself is fine, the reason I hate it is how it single handedly destroyed the genre, all that has come out really since its release has been clones of it over and over. When are devs going to learn your not going to dethrone world of warcraft? it has over 10 years of content and a huge playerbase, most mmo's are lucky to hit 1/8th of the playerbase it has. Insted of just trying to copy it do your own thing.

I' d play the shit out of a mmorpg based on dot hack gu for ps2, I loved the battle system and such, tbh games like Dot hack gu, and SAO: hollow fragment are more mmorpg like than actual mmorpgs these days.

The next issue is the fact that most mmo's these day end up bascally being a single player game with a chat room to simulate multiplayer. Its not often you need anyone else for things for alot of the game. I think thats the major downfall it has, its just being made too soloable. Its gotten to the point most people won't group unless they are forced too, which really removes the "MMO" aspect. I'd like to see a mmorpg come out where you can solo, but its like 10 times slower than grouping, to try to force people to group.

Alot of eastern mmo's tend to be bad because they are setup to be completly pay2win. Take Cosmic break, they decided to try a kickstarter to get cosmic break 2 translated, it didn't hit 50% of the 150k they were looking for, why? Because the first game Cosmic Break is known to be horrifically pay2win, like you don't even know. Its one of the worse p2w examples I have seen. There is pretty much no gear or decent robots for free, to upgrade parts you need alot of cash shop items. So the 2nd game didn't meet the kickstarter because of how badly p2w the 1st game was, and people figured it'd just be the same crap all over again.

The only three games that I feel release enough contents and updates to merit a description are Final Fantasy XIV, Eve Online, and Guild Wars 2. Everyone else, not even close.

I wouldn't say eve online has much for content, unless you call having skills magically raise while you do nothing content, if you can't tell I hate the skill system in eve. I feel its the worse part of the game and its just an excuse for them to get you to keep a sub open in a otherwise extremly shallow game.

I agree on FF14, dispite it being just the newest (and prettiest) geberic wow clone, it does update often, there is a fair amount to do. I just wish crafting (other than cooking/alch) wasn't so worthless, all the best gear is raided so.. yeah, no real point to crafted stuff once your at level cap anymore. Only exception is cooking and alchemy, you always need food for buffs and consumables to save your butt.

Never played guild wars 2, would like to though.

I am more concerned if it will get finished at all. They only have so much money to put into making it, what happens when it runs out? Alot of early access games sadly end up this way and get abandoned. Especally Early access involving mmorpgs. a mmorpg is by far the largest game you can make, and therefore takes the most time. I don't think any kickstarted mmorpg has actually gotten to release yet. I am in repops alpha though, and it has promise, but thats the thing promise, it may never actually end up releaseing due to lack of funding.

Devs just go with the themepark route cuz they can get lazy and just copy paste world of warcraft. Bascally go with what has been shown to work, but sadly this has been backfiring mostly. WoW is not a bad game itself, but I hate wow and blizzard due to one reason: it single handedly destroyed the mmorpg genre.

I had wildstar at release, enjoyed it till I got to about level 20 or so, then I started to relize other than the combat system its just another stupid wow clone, I did get my engineer to level cap, but I quit soon after due to losing almost all interest in the game.

Would I play it if it goes f2p? probally not, it'll still be the same boring wow-clone just with an action combat system, not particularrly intersted in mmorpgs like that anymore, FF14 is another one, its just a generic wow clone with a pretty final fantasy skin, i've also gotten mutiple jobs to level cap in ff14.

All in all, I think mmorpgs are stagnating in a cesspool of muck, its going to continue like this until they stop trying to dethrone wow, I hate WoW due to how it single handedly destroyed the mmorpg genre, its not a bad game in of itself though, it just ruined the genre since all devs really make anymore are bascally wow in a new skin. You'd think with how many wow clones have been failing the last few years they would learn their lesson.. but nope lol.

Protip: your not going to dethrone wow, it has 10 years of content, stop trying and stop copying it, do your own thing. People are getting sick of these mmorpgs that are bascally single player games with a text chat room, because thats what most of them end up being till level cap. Players these days won't group unless forced to, well most anyway. Bascally put if I wanted a single player game, i'd play a single player game, if I play a mmorpg I expect to be forced at all levels to group up to do stuff, it was always part of the genre till wow came. After Wow? well every mmorpg now a days is mostly a single player game with a irc chat room till level cap, even then you can only raid once a week(weekly reset) then you twiddle your thumbs for 6 days doing nothing. It kinda blows my mind why people keep a mmorpg account open when your like raiding 1 day a week and then they don't even login the other 6 days. when it gets to that point you may as well quit and move on, since getting better gear doesn't really advance your char any. just higher stats, but no new skills or anything anymore.

I am not trying to troll with this post, its just my honest opinion after looking at how bad the mmorpg genre has gotten in recent years.

Ahh, well thats perfect then, thanks.
Simple question, which server has the highest population.

Given that the "win" in P2W has become synonymous with "accelerated progression", you may struggle to find many F2P games where it's not possible to significantly speed-up progression by paying real money.

That is the core principle of F2P game design, after all. They offer highly desirable (but optional) things for sale, otherwise nobody would feel tempted to buy anything.

At the same time, the game avoids the "official "P2W label", because everything CAN be earned via normal game play. It just takes slightly longer than the average gamer can endure. Not obviously longer, that wouldn't work. The initial impression must always be that the player could probably achieve everything for free. By the time they realise that they've bitten-off more than they can chew, the temptation to hit the Cash Shop must be overwhelmingly strong...

By pay2win I mean buying gear, or items used to upgrade said gear, that sort of stuff. I don't mind stuff to speed up progression since every game has a level cap usually.

I've played most of those.. Does Trove have any point to it yet?
Any suggestions? I am kinda looking for a f2p mmorpg to play but so many seem to be heavily pay2win. I am not picky about graphics if the gameplay is there. I'd even play a browser mmo if its decent and not overly pay2win like most of them seem to be.

As of right now Final Fantasy XIV is my most favorite mmo. I love the crafting and it has actual meaning to the game. I love the lore and the story has been fantastic, the devs did a great job on setting up the story for Heavensward expansion. Graphics/art is very nice & will look even better once DX11 comes out in the expansion. There is other stuff to do besides Raiding and Dungeons, such as Chocobo Racing & Triple Triad. I love that I can do everything on one character, no more alts needed to get other classes/jobs or crafting classes.

I disagree with the crafting having meaning, once you hit level cap, crafted gear is a joke compared to even entry-mid level endgame stuff. The only crafting worth it at endgame is cooking and alchemy mostly with the 3 gatherer professions too. The story is squaresofts generic crap they been reusing since ff4(not the save the world thing the rest of the basic plot). I haven't played it recently, but last time I tried to play the game, I opened my sub played for a few hours and got bored and didn't go back. I also paid for a server xfer to hang with a friend who never seemed to be on that often. FF14 is a ok mmo, but in reality its just another wow clone in a diffrent skin. Mind you its a gorgeous wow clone, if squaresoft has anything good about them left these days,  it would be their graphics.. but sadly thats about ALL squaresoft has anymore. I used to be a major squarefan in the snes days, and early ps1 days, but i've lost almost all faith in them.
