Yeah, I've been playing DayZ, which is great for just pure sandboxyness, and plan on checking out The War Z as well. But...they are quite different from a single server fantasy game, heh.

Again wiht the sandbox posts but only concerned with PvP. I want a true Sandbox game also but PvP isn't the only freature of a true Sandbox MMO. If you want a PvP pure game it isn't a MMO. Just saying that this is why today's sandbox games fail.

Actually, he just said he doesn't want shallow risk free pvp.

I wish I could help, but I'm in the same boat :(

Its also going to be risky getting the time cycles right on rebirth and repopulation as well. Very instersting with the GM's role in this as playing the game like a sim game as far as managing the mob population.

Hopefully the players will have half a brain and manage mob populations themselves. Well, the well run clans will anyway :)

It will help to get realistic amounts of resources from slain mobs and have realistic weight limits.

Ugh...stat decay.  That means ill need a dedicted crafter alt to feed my combat...and ill have to avoid doing to much resourcing between mob spawns on my cobat lest i decay something.

Theres got to be a more creative way to handle people being the best at everything during combat without such an annoying system.

Or, you know, a working economy so you don't feel the need to do everything yourself. And gear not being as big of a deal as in some other games. (See Nefastus' post) Also, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a way to lock the stat to prevent accidental decay. If you want to do everything yourself and be self sufficient in a multiplayer online game...expect some drawbacks.

Who says you won't be able to be a pvper and a crafter? If combat is made to be mainly player skill oriented, then you won't have to raise many combat oriented stats.

  • One character/account type of game where i can be it all just not at the same time without losing skills to do something?
  • How will they regulate skill use?  Gear based? Skill selection in a safe zone? Decay and regrind?
  • PvE mobs that are more than wandering resource nodes strictly for crafting mats?
  • Communication restrictions?
  • What end game skill mechanics will exist?
  • Will there be melee skills or just hack n slash? Or something like DF where theres like one skill the same across all weapons liek whirlwind or power attack or knockback (that was all of them right?)
  • how many weapons/ schools of will magic be incorperated as to not be OP and needed to compete

Stat system:

Dynamic Ecology:

Those might help a bit. I'm guessing the skill system will be similar to the stat system. Basically, use skills to raise them, they decay if you use too many other skills. The rate of that is tbd. Not annoying for daily use, not too horrible to completely change your character. Don't want to force people to buy alts. We don't know too much about melee combat...more player skill than DF, less than m&b? I vaguely recall hearing about special attacks being learned, like you mention. As for magic...well there are 8 threads, but only 2 at a time can be used by disciples (priests or clerics or w/e) depending on their god/religon. The idea is to have more utility type spells instead of just 'boom boom fireball lulz' in general. Also, no straight healing during combat. As for Magi, they can use all 8 threads, but we're told it'll be hell to be a Magi. The creative director (Rob) says he can't wait for the tears when the game starts and people try to be Magi :P

Redman...going by what we know, I think you'll be happy.  :)

Havok engine costs about 10k$ if you believe what people write in forums plus 7,5k$ for Raknet leaves them with 7,5k$ for rest of stuff. Ofc they don't need to pay those now since both allow rather flexible licensing. Ofc employing one person for year costs nearly 50k$ so software is cheap.

Did you not see how much they got from KS? 10k+7.5k+7.5k = 35k, leaving another ~10k you didn't account for.

They only asked for 25k$ thats why I counted for that. Again even with this extra cash leaves open who pays the human cost? I find it weird that they needed to ask 25k$ for tools yet they have enough money to support 150k$/yr for life costs of 3 people. Or are they working this as hobby besides real jobs?

Also keep mind that KS takes like 10% or something.

All volunteer at the moment, with over 50 people contributing at last count. 2 have no other job, one is doing 8 hours after his day job. Most people are putting in several hours a day after their normal job. Once an investor is secured they will hire as many people as they can full time.

1. Have you guys secured a publishing company for your prototype?

2. Has the publishing company demonstrated enough interest in your game?

3. Have you guys considered taking a loan in order to fund the development of the prototype? If you guys aren't willing to take a risk for your own game, why should we?

1. The prototype is being built to secure such financial support.

2. I have no way of knowing this, but they have said they've already turned down an investor(s?) because they wanted to make the game free to play.

3. A loan? What was the Kickstarter for then? Also, until the Kickstarter, it was the Dev's paying out of pocket. A few of them are already doing this full time (for free), so don't tell me they aren't willing to take a risk.

I come from a Shadowbane/Darkfall/Mortal Online/EVE mindset...'endgame' is war and politics with meaning. No PvE experience can match up for long.

By the time Embers has launched Mortal Online will be polished and have all the features Embers is promising.

If your looking for a Mortal Online clone I'd either stick with Mortal or wait for ArcheAge.

Having Mortal become the game that EoC is trying to be would be perfectly fine with me, and I hope it happens (spoken as an EoC fanboi). I've got nothing against having another good sandbox out there.

And it's not like if you 'stick with Mortal' you are making a decision right now. EoC isn't out yet, and won't be for a while. Play whatever the heck you want.

I honestly want to know how is this game going to be differnt than Mortal Online and not go down the drain? How are they going to make the game "fun" but deep?

What concernce me the most is the classes. While thempark is downright aweful, Darkfall was WAY to relaxed on the skill points, and Mortal Online was WAY to strict on the skill points. Everyone was Idiot Savants in MO, and you have to make analt to just learn how to wipe your own ass. The game was a alt fest. How is EOC going to set it apart?

Being able to learn too much or too little is simply a balance issue IMO,  and it probably isn't worth debating numbers at this point. Do note that this will be a single character game, so if people want alts they will have to pay. You will always be able to shift the focus of your character and do something new, so don't worry about getting locked in and having to reroll. I seem to remember someone saying that they may have skill and stat gain be somewhat quick, so people don't feel they are stuck with their character if they want to change. (Not 1-2 days, but not 6 months either, don't remember any numbers)

Anyway, it's probably fine just to wait a while and see what is planned for the stat system before we talk about this kind of stuff just yet. And yes, the hype is a little crazy considering the intended release schedule but it will sort itself out I'm sure.

Why should I be excited/hyped for a game I won't see for 4-5 years? Doesn't that seem a little too early for public announcement, anyway?

Not sure exactly what you mean by 'public announcement.' As far as I know, everything has been pretty much word of mouth. They don't exactly have a marketing budget. The hype here, the announcements or updates on other's almost entirely word of mouth, I think. The devs may notice that word has gotten out someplace, and will then talk with people there, but it's not like there is an ad campaign going on.

Actually SWOTR does look shitty in that ss, but compared to korean games and others such as Terra. EOCs engine is already super outdated. In 4 years no one will even look at it.

NOt trying to diss the game on purpose but as a gamer ive faced alot of these indie projects with lots of promises, especailly ones with total world control and shitty graphics, not one of those ever made it really.

Wait, are you saying Havok is outdated? I mean, just look at a list of games which use Havok. Sure maybe EoC doesn't have the budget to get AAA graphics, but they won't be shitty. We also haven't seen whatever new stuff they have in a while.

Edit: Also, I personally don't like the trend towards 'shiny' graphics being considered good. Terra looks good, but it leans toward shiny graphics, which are kind of fake looking to me.

I find this thread thoroughly amusing. Paying for hype? Haha...

The way I understand it a late 2016 release date is more or less worst case. As for graphics...they look pretty good now, and can always be updated. With the Havok engine it won't look bad, in any case.

What i do not understand is the early development of things like a dynamic weather system.

I mean, from all features that I excpect to be implemented in an MMORPG this is quite one of the most uninteresting ones. It simply doesn't matter. If you look at Mortal Online, they have all that overcomplicated implementations like the cooking system, which no one really uses in depth cause all that you need is very basic stuff. They have a weather system too, and guess what? I don't ever have realised that it exists.

Every company tries to create "giant worlds". Yeah, go on, I know how that will look in the end: The world is big, but empty to the core.

Basic features like an immersive, active PvP Combat or an intense and USEFULL crafting without useless grinds, a working economy and at least a solid quallity, that will be the top features every game needs to work in a long term. Carefully worked out concepts that will handle the balance between ganking and useful combat and so on.

Not that high level shit that is fun to implement for the devs, but highly unimportant for the gameplay.

I understand your basic idea here, and agree with it, but I think you may have chosen a bad example. Weather is very important, particularly for the naval system. As for the world size, I'm not worried about it. They've got a good sized team working on filling that world up, and (apparently) some good software to back them up. If it turns out to be empty people can just stay closer to the major cities. Now, fixing up the PvP and crafting is truly a core concept they are working on. We've heard some about PvP and their plans there, still waiting on more crafting details (beyond there being both passive and active crafting modes). However, they devs have played the same games we have, so they know that crafting usually sucks. It'll be interesting to see how they try and do something different.

The game sound great! I would like to see how they are going to implement all that stuff into a game with a very low budget and still make it look good and polished in the process...

Well, they will be working on an investor prototype now, so best case they won't actually be low budget any more. Worst case, (can't find an investor who will give them the freedom they need) they do have plans to continue as they are, but I'm guessing it will take longer, of course.

No shenanigans, but it does seem a bit crazy to be so high on the hype meter this far out :D

Yes, I suspect the spreadsheet warriors will be looking at the Memory stat quite a bit, heh.
