I have to admit, being able to level from 30 to 90 in Abyssea is more than tempting...however, the lack of skill development really gets hit when you carve through the levels so fast. Normal xp-ing grinding, (even using FoV w/ approrpriate mob selection) will give you additional experience per page, in addition to gains in skills. If you are "NEW" to the game; Abyssea is not a good idea. You'll definitely want to at least grind through your first job before using Abyssea to super-size future jobs up to 90-this way, you'll gain some experience in normal partying, which becomes VERY helpful when communicating with other players--especially vets. All-in-all, play the game how you see fit--it's your dollar--and have fun doing it. |

Originally posted by maddey5290 Where to begin... I may miss some stuff cause I'm writing this at work and from memory... but as far as PvP: Ballista and Brenner are the two forms of "Conflict" in FFXI. I would suggest visiting: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Conflict for more info on these two events. As far as PvE:...take your pick...
Abyssea is now the most prolfic end-game event going... it's huge... covers at least 9 zones worth of material/enemies/gear/accessories etc... generally designed to get you to lvl 90 pretty fast.
Dynamis is rarely done, but it use to be the end-game event folks attended to get job-specific gear/accessories; to refresh it, Square - Enix is re-doing it to bring it on-par with Abyssea... so everyone's looking forward to this major overhaul.
Dynamis is basically taking all the starter cities... and a few zones and making them into "night time" zones... zones with darkness weather and special enemies designed to destroy your "alliance"... an alliance is a group of players which can go up to 64 working together to defeat the zone mega-boss.
Sea, Sky, Einherjar, Limbus, Salvage, Nyzle Isle Investigation are note-worthy events (PvE) with set-objectives... for example:
Sea takes place in a zone where you walk on "solid" water... some of the enemies are under the "floor" which makes up the earth you walk on...you can even see them through the ground... and the music.... it's magnfiicent. Limbus takes place in sea... so it's really 2 different events which share the zones that make up sea.
Sky takes place high up... in the air... on floating continents and the only way to get to each continent from another is to get teleported--each zone has a "mini-God" type boss w/ the final Sky boss being able to summon his lesser mini-god to assist him.
Einherjar is a 30 minute event which takes place in the Aht Urgan region of FFXI. The event centers around the Avatar Odin and his dark denizens.
Salvage is awesome... unique and fun. It's another timed event, but you have longer, like 2hrs to navigate through multiple rooms trying to unlock your gear, abiltities, stats, traits etc... a skilled team of 3-6 players working together can accomplish this task realtively easily.
HNMs - throughout Vanadiel there are Notorious Monsters that are SUPER strong. You have a hidden timer to defeat them, usually around 60 minutes... if they are not defeated within 60 minutes, they "RAGE"... which is NEVER pretty.
ZNMs - a fun event that can net you some awesome armor--requires taking "pictures" of specific beasties and defeating specific Notorious Monsters.
SCNMs - another event, which requires teamwork--collecting special items and trading them to spawn even harder NMs, to drop valuable items which can be sold or special gear/accessories.
VNMs - void walker notorious monsters, covers abyssea and non-abyssea zones (different paths and different monsters)... using a key item in your inventory, you simply use the "heal" command. If you do this in a zone that has a void walker wandering around.. your key item will alert you to this and direct you to where you'll need to heal in order to cause the void walker to spawn in your dimension so you can fight it. If you successfully get the void walker to appear, then your key item "may" upgrade, which will allow you to spawn a higher-level void walker. On the higher end of this path of upgrades, are awesome weapons and gear/accessories.... needless to say, most folks love doing the VNMs... most of them can be low-manned and even the lower grade key item spawn can be solo'd with the right job.
Raids in FFXI consist of: Besiege and Campaign
Besiege battles consist of "everyone in the zone" regardless of level, taking up arms to defend the city of Alzabhi from a beastman invasion... it could last up to 1 hour... the beastmen horde swarm the city, killin' everything in sight, with the purpose of stealing the city's astral candesence item. This item, when held by the player base, grants special benefits. When held by the beastmen, it also grants them special benefits.
Campaign battles cover multiple zones in "Past Vanadiel"... basically, it's vanadiel but you warp to the past (the landscape is dramatically altered--so are the beasts and enemies and NPCs are different etc...it's completely different from the present)... and you battle (based on your choice of battlefield) which outpost you want to defend or raid... these battles grant what's called "allied notes" which can be used to purchase special gear, weapons, temporary items etc.
Adventuring Fellow---now this I LOVE! An adventuring fellow can be called to aid you in battle... he/she is your comrade and has saved many a player... you level your "fellow" just like you level your character... by defeating enemies. Currently you can level your adventuring fellow to level 70. Hopefully SE will adjust and increase the cap for the "fellow".... you can tailor your adventuring fellow's abilities... want a warrior helping you out, if your a mage "no problem"... want a mage fellow, if your a warrior, so that you can get healed... "no problem"... want a tank to provoke the enemy and take the beating for you while you heal him, "no problem".... this is one of the best aspects of FFXI... you can use your adventuring fellow when you solo stuff and need an extra hand.
Ok, my fingers are tired... there's still sooooo much I haven't touched on... but I implore you to give a go and enjoy this game while you can... there's 10 years worth of content to explore and enjoy with a HUGE player base and community to assist you.
I'm Xiozen on the Unicorn server... I have a level 90 Puppetmaster, 90 Dark Knight, 90 Paladin, 90 Blue Mage and 90 White Mage (out of the 20 jobs you can be in the game)... these are what I tend to focus on most often. Feel free to look me up... take care and good luck.

Alot of interest in returning to the game I see... I've personally never taken a break from FFXI, so 2011 makes it my 7th year in this game. I'm on the Unicorn server and just last night (3/27/2011) peeps were doing the Rise of the Zilart missions, Chains of the Promathia missions and asking for some assistance with getting testimony drops because they just hit level 70 on their first job... Haven't seen this is at least 3 years and it's great to be able to go back and re-visit a lot of this old content... brings back memories. I play on the Unicorn server, which will eventually be going over to the Fenrir server... it's quite busy all around.. many, many folks have come back...so the game is definitely thriving. This is probably the best time to start over again... as far as linkshells, many linkshells have recruited new (brand-spankin' new) people and are going through the motions of getting these players up-to-speed. So if you are reactiving or returning, you'll be in a prime position to jump on board and help-out based on your previous experience. Not so much content has changed that static locations/quests and key events won't garner a memory or two. Good luck! |

Impressive FFXI changes... {now more soloable}
The Airship (General) « Final Fantasy XI 2/11/11 3:23:46 PM
Originally posted by Doomedfox "The Ah change is nice even tho i dont think it was that big of a deal before tho." There are "AH" = Auction Houses scattered throughout Vanadiel. One in Rabao, Norg, the three starter cities, Jeuno, Whitegate, Tavnazia, and Kazham... these are interconnected in a unqiue way; for example... Rabao is the same AH as Windhurst (a starter city), and Tavnazia and Whitegate are Jeuno's Auction House etc... because the player base has advanced into the high lvl 80+ ranges, many of these AH's are not being used; so in order to provide better accessibility--it is proposed by the devs to merge the Auction Houses. It wasn't a big deal before, primarily because there was such a large variance between levels in the game, that most areas where the AH's were located, had a regular flow of players. This has drastically changed; which requires so adjustments to how items and the economy can balance out. "I do understand why all this changes were/are made but the game now is just not what it used to be and what i loved so much. Aht Uhrgan was a nice expansion but everything afterward was lacking the FF quality i got used to." You said you understand why the changes are/were made "but" the game is just not what it used to be... of course it's not. It's almost 9 years old. The player base has changed significantly--which requires the game must change as well. Any MMORPG that does not adjust to its player base, will not last. Without players, theres no MMORPG. Bottom line: Its not that you don't understand, its the fact that you don't agree. "Oh sure campaign battles were fun but they destroyed besieges and no matter how much fun Campaign was it also gave us Dancers as a Job which was the beginning of the end. Still i kept playing trying to adopt to the new way they were trying to go but than came Abyss... The Abyss expansions are terrible if at all they should have been for free since they do lack everything FF was standing for there is no story involved (no real one) and the whole Abyss world is not well made. Way too many wholes not even a connection between the areas no Towns nothing." Campaign and Besiege were implemented to add variety in the form of Large scale "Raids..." an excellent addition for the time for which it was added....but like so much other ingame content---it gets old. It also gives players without Wings of the Goddess expansion, an opportunity to participant in a raid...since you must have WotG installed to do Campaign. Abyssea was added as an answer to endgame content--a GREAT and EXCELLENT combination of adding higher level gear to a game that is NINE years old...and still generating NEW players to this day. Can't say the same for half of the MMORPGs on the market. Granted, Abyssea isn't for everyone--so if its not your thing...don't do it. Gather a few friends and do SEA or SKY or BESIEGE or CAMPAIGN or BCNM, ANNMs, VNMs, KSNMs, the list goes on and on... so much other stuff you could have done... Good luck finding anything out there now that is anything remotely like what you've left behind.... let me know when you've found it.

Until the February 14th Mini - update---new people may want to wait to start FFXI. Soloing efforts may drastically improve. Abyssea does not kill the game, it makes end game content more interesting to do... also gives you an opportunity to drag out those jobs you throught you'd never level and give them a shot. You can gain experience significantly faster but that does not mean that the overall experience has been shunted in any way. But again, wait for the 2/14/2011 update and then solo play til your hearts content---I emphasize solo, because 95% of the player base is at end-game.
Good luck |
