So, I've been checking out the game during this free log-in week-end. I do not own any character (bought the game pre-relaunch) so I've started fresh. Things I loved:

- the graphics are great (for what I like)

- I actually like the slowish tab target combat

- I like some of the systems such as the multi-class, hunts, duties, leves, the armor bags and many more

However, there are some things that I did not like:

- the map system seems complicated (at least in Limsa Lominsa)

- the constant running around talking to 15 people just to finish a quest

- the fact that every npc which you talk to has about 6-7 paragraphs of text which you have to click-click-click through (at some point I got bored of reading everything)

I'm currently level 16 in my first job (arcanist). My question for the people which spent more time in the game is, does it get better as I level up (or at the endgame) or it's gonna be still hours of running around with a few minutes of actually doing something? Help me decide if it's worth a sub for me or not, thank you :)

I played the game for about 7months. Left for stupid reasons and now sorta regretted that I did. (I went to play Wildstar.) Regarding the things you do not like.

The Map system will get much easier to understand as you progress deeper into the game. After awhile you even will tend to know where everything is... and no need for the map.

The constant running around... oh man, your going to be traveling a lot. I mean it! certain quests will make you go to the far end of the world and back and then to another far end of the world... thank goodness for teleports and recalls and free teleports if u use their authenticator! take advantage of that! Will save you much gils.

I have to admit there were a lot of text to read and unfortunately not all scenarios or npc is voiced either But FF is really about the lore. should try to read thru it a little....I did a lot of skipping too XD

I am thinking of going back and resubbing maybe when next patch comes with extra class/job to lvl; Ninja. Already maxed all current jobs and crafting. -_-.

I think youll love the game if you are ok with the combat system since it seems the majority that seems to have issue with the game is they think the combat is slow. But to me i enjoy the "slower" pace and strategize my attacks, than a faster pace game like Wildstar. Always dodging telegraphs kinda makes you spam whichever skill lights up. Sure theres still rotation and buffs and debuffs to keep up but i feel i button mash more of the time than not. but some enjoy that action so kudos to them!

What server are you on btw?

I dont know it all comes down to what you enjoy playing mostly. Once you dislike, hate something youll start to pick on everything, everything just becomes a distaste. I really enjoyed the world of GW2, it is beautiful. But I just couldnt get myself to play it anymore even though I dont have to pay to play.

Some areas just reallly stand out like the sylvari forest.

But some areas, especially textures like that bridge could use some more.. work.

Im sure all games got some bad areas and some they just spent way too much time on. Only if it was more balanced.

Love to reproduce your images but since i do not have the game sub atm I just dig up some old screens.

I see it for as low as $9.43.

I bought a copy for a friend in 2012 for $15.

How are these sites. Never bought before from them, are they safe? >>

To the OP, graphics are fine just update your rig. As for the killing point of this game, its the combat. Its bland and slow. Only jobs that are fluid are the casters; melee and bard blow and need the tp system reworked, end of story. I applaud people for continuing to play after everything is 50. For me, there's not motivation to play until the new jobs, and that will only take 1 sub max to get them done. Until the combat and stats are more polished, they should feel honored getting my little cash when the new jobs land.

I'm actually A-OK in the rig department.  I've got a I7@4.4Ghz, 8Gigs, GTX780 FTW>X560TI for physx.  So you see I'm not a casual kind of guy about these things.  For your enjoyment I will now post a few pictures of some of the annoying textures and lame design of FF14ARR compared to the much better developed GW2.

Why did you turn down the graphics settings for FF? cause that is horrible. Looks more like PS3 graphics than a PC.

Try Scarlet Blade; lots of bouncy apples.

Now I don't agree with the harshness of the OP's review I do agree that the I am not sure FFXIV is in deed worthy of the praise it has received on this site.

For starters, it does fail to grab you out of the gate.  I haven't played for that long but as of level 10 I don't feel immersed at all.  I mean what is up with the combat?  It feels like I am playing a turn based RPG.  The combat is slow, clunky and in no way feels like it's on par with Wildstar, GW2, or ESO.

Next why is there no voice overs in this game?  I mean, sure walls of texts are fine for games like WoW where rushing to end game is what it's all about but if you want immersion reading walls of text about placing posters won't suffice!

I would love to have a reason to play this game and if it's end game then so be it.  With that said I haven't seen anything so far that leads me to believe that this game is in anyway worthy of the 8.4 rating that it has here or worth $15 a month for a sub.

P.S. - I do agree with the OP questioning the instancing.  Where is the immersion in walking through lines of blue balls then staring at black screens?

I have to admit the starting levels for FFXIV is a bit stale. Even at lvl 10/50 you will feel the game is moving along slowly and there seems to be aint much skills required since all you do is spam maybe 1 or 2 moves. But the game shines much more in later levels. You will finally have rotations you do, trying to keep up buffs from rotations also debuffing and dodging more red telegraphs. Sure I think Wildstar telegraphs are much crzier because they are everywhere! and huge! but luckily they have the double tap dodge roll whatever you want to call it. so its not a big deal and could all be easily dodged. I am playing WS atm and not FF and I find that WS is pretty easy. Currently a medic dps and I barely follow any rotations yet still hold 2 to top DPS most of time. Most of the time i just pop whatever skills pop up. Surely I could not do that with FF. Some may like that style of spamming and call it action and not boring 1 2 3 4 5 rotation while still trying to dodge. I dont know but I had a lot of fun with FF. Played it for 7months hopefully WS could keep me that long. Oh and there is voice overs, but unfortunately not everything. GW2 had the best voice overs imho. But then no game is truelly perfect because sadly to me. Gw2 is only good at their audio department. The game was terrible for me. Ended before it even started kinda deal. The instancing does kinda suck but luckily if ones system is terribad, itll only take 3-5 secs of load. Really the SSD really help here. JUST dont play on the PS3. lol, you will cry waiting for things to load. PS4 is ok.

I dont play the game no more. Not because of what you said since none are true. As a matter of fact, I think you hated the game the second you picked it up because everything said were lies. Really how is the graphics bad? Game looks beautiful and is way better than a majority of AAA games out there. Sure the details been toned down a bit from the original 1.0 design but sadly it must be done because only a small population of the world have super built PC with 2-3 graphic cards able to run it. But even at its current state, graphics are amazing. I dont know what other mmo you are comparing to that when zoomed in armors will look detailed. Clearly the game is not for you if you hated it from the beginning. So what isss your game?

This game is to hard. Anyone who ran the first instance at 20 can tell you that. At 50 its the same deal. I don't like having to join a guild just to get a 5 man instance down, so if i cant pug in your game then its to hard. I tried it out at 50 as healing and dps on a medic then quit. as a medic i have to say the damage does come in to fast for you to heal it all in most teams. and the average player who will que as dps is usually the first to die. imo they need to slow down the incoming damage on this game make it like Tera where you only get hit if you are bad.

Ok, this must differ with different people. I heal fine. Im casual. I pug. Maybe im just lucky and get into parties that know how to simply step out of Big red bright telegraphs. I mean sure it was a little harder at 20 but as I move towards supposingly harder adventures and dungeons, it got easier. Maybe people realize to gtfo of the telegraphs. Heck some dps dont even need heals as if they dodged evvvverything. oh and really everyone should have a heal skill to migitate a bit if they really suxxors at movement.

I dont like WS that much. Probably going back to FFXIVARR. But servers are nowhere near dead or empty. And theres only like a handful or 2 saying its empty. They really shouldnt had open up more and more servers at launch but figure out how to increase server capacity. Its probably too hardcore for many and peopel taking break already from their 1st month rush to 50 and such. Too many MMO choices these days, and many play more than 1, 2 even 3. So with days weeks sometimes it can get quiet on certain servers maybe for WS.

really.. you dont want to be playing too relaxed....

Havent we all learned by now that new mmo games at launch will have terrible tech and everything else supports? When have we had a super super smooth release? Its only been a month...give it some more time.... im sure theyll get to your ticket. tickets.

Can we know if were going to see FFXIV on the xbox one & ps4 someday? for real. I dont have the money to buy a rig it takes to play the game lol

Unless your still thinking about FFXIV1.0 yes you need a crzy rig to play that even a little smooth. But FFXIVARR works pretty well on low-mid range rigs. The game is really optimized than ever before. But yes like most said already its been on the PS4 for awhile now. But probably youll never see it with Microsoft.

  • Monthly Sub - I knew my game clock was ticking and that put a lot of incentive on playing this game whether I felt like it or not. It's not the money but the fact that I'm renting a time slick and it feels like I'm wasting it if I don't take advantage of that. Thus my other games got pushed to the side. I don't like that setup. I want to game in the world I want when I want.

Based on this statement i would be more inclined to subscribe to mmos if i could freeze my subscription manually when i know i wont be playing, knowing that my remaining paid time will be there waiting for me to manually resume it again on my account.

This needs to become a thing, IMO.

Your renting server space for your character. Even if you dont play a day your character/s would still be using that space. Its like if Im renting a house and not have to pay for the time im not home....

So guys, I eventually bought the game on 50% steam sale and.... I think this is the most boring combat out of all mmorpgs I've ever played in 10 years :(

I've been spamming my "stone" spell for 6 hours straight every 2.5 seconds. Switching to another class is the same thing, replace "stone" with "insertabilityname"

Yeah the starting levels are super terrible for any class, especially since u have no duel class spells either havent you heard?

Combat would be really fun if they halved the gcd and cast times.

This.  While the combat is vastly superior to FFXI and XIV 1.0, the 2.5 second GCD is holding it back.

I don't understand this mentality. Faster does not equal better. I'm pressing keys for abilities nearly non-stop as it is. There's no need to be pressing even faster for the same result, and speed up animations to the point they aren't nearly as awesome and fun to see. They also couldn't get away with things like the Ninja jumping on top of the enemies for an attack and stuff.

No, their current system is definitely not holding it back. Your "ideal" system would, however.

And that's fine for you.  Nothing wrong with that.

I, on the other hand, don't need 2.5 seconds to decide what to do or what is the best course of action to take next.  The second i hit an ability, i already know what i'm going to do next depending on any number of factors based on mob interaction.  A 1 second GCD works best for me.

The majority of gameplay vids I've watched seem to indicate the same may be true for many others as well.  I see many players spamming their next attack button trying to get it to go off as soon as possible.

I understand why they have a long GCD and it has nothing to do with SE preferring it that way.

so go into our options and set it up so u can have all your next actions queue up. 1 second que time would mean terrible animation.

Personally I would like more news about how they are going to sort out the games optimization. It doesn't matter how much content they put out if its pot luck whether your machine will play it or not . I know they have acknowledged that there is a problem and they are working on it but I can guarantee you its not just down to AMD processors because I'm using a Pentium i7 3.4 ghz , 8 gb ram and a radeon 6800 hd card . (cards obviously not the best but it had no problem playing TESO on high settings at 40-50fps in the open world where as in Wildstar it only gets 20-30fps in a similar open world enviroment on low settings not to mention it looks like a game I would have played in 2004 when at those settings  )

Graphics drivers all up to date , PC cleaned of all dust , no unwanted programs running in the back ground  , running in DX9 and a host of other solutions too numerous to mention that all failed to work . Feel free to list more but I can pretty much guarantee I've tried it and I dont feel inclined to upgrade my card yet when it plays every single other game I wish to play just fine on high or ultra settings .

I'm sure someone will say its my PC but explain why when  all other games work fine and why forums are full of people with similar problems . If you are thinking of buying this game get a buddy key first because there is no guarantee if it will work on your rig whatever its specs . Some mid range PCs will run it better that high ranged ones . Its a good game but its this is what will limit its success .

Optimization is a big deal, don't think they are over looking it.  There will be a solution sooner than later.

Agree

Future content team is a separate team and according to Gaffney its 33% of the total team and will go up to 50% when problems of launch settles down.

So they are together adding content and fixing the problems. They cant and shouldnt stop producing new content because of some bugs or optimization problems for some ppl. They must do them both and they are.

Just for the record, in their yesterdays twitch they announced a patch, coming at the end of this week, with client optimizations.

Thats good news but they really need to offer a free trial even if its a two day  one when they do . Theres no way I would ever buy this game without trying it to see if the optimization has improved after such a patch .

Im sure there will be a trial eventually; but i wouldnt expect one for maybe a few months.

I hope what dies is the constant whinging about instancing.

Tech doesn't exist yet that can render a AAA game with a limitless horizon.

Deal with it

It does. Ever heard of World of warcraft?

Deal with the fact that WoW doesn't instance and is AAA.

Wasnt Wow originally instanced and later change because technology got better and could render the outdated graphic engine?

It aint that bad. Its about time people learn how to really play games than just faceroll. At least you dont delevel from the wipes, now that is hardcore.
