I was looking forward to the game since it was announced but since actually seeing the population they have targeted though, it has died down alot. Actually stepping back and looking at the genre's new audience it has me doubting there will ever be any game I can get into anytime soon, that is for another topic though. But for this one it seems to me they are trying to please too many people here at once and will end up pleasing nobody.

MMO fans are hard as hell to please, actually pretty much impossible. They like to cry about everything and always want something else than what they have in the game. Most mmo gamers today like to get everything for free and love easy casual games (GW2, COD or any other F2P game out there) hence while games only last a few months than fade away. This is the market they are targeting, these are the people who will be playing the game.

TES fans are mostly console players and probably don't even have a computer from this decade that will run this game so they are already crying about that. TES fans also are impossible to please and are always crying about anything new in any of the games and the series has really turned into a watered down playable book instead of a game. TES fans also are used to very slooooooow repetative combat looking through first person while fighting 3-4 mobs at a time at the most where they can pause it and drink 20 pots to heal or stop to think about what they will do next and maybe even reload the game before they got into trouble. They will also probably never get into the PvP part of the game and leave after they run through the story once. But I played Skyrim for 1000 hours, yeah and you were alone so you obviously like being alone but this is a MMO.

What is this post even about? I don't know, it was just a small rant but to answer the OP question, yes. The community will probably canabalize the game in a few months and spit it out moving on the the next victim. If they cave into to the crying of too many different groups they will only shoot themselves in the foot by half assing the rest of the game and not pleasing anyone.

I think I will turn my attention to smaller niche games because these mass marketed games are really not worth it anymore. I will still check the game out (as long as its not F2P) and hope it turns out well but like I said before after seeing the people who will actually be playing the game, I have my doubts now.

I don't think destructive criticism helps anyone except the person posting it. If you are unhappy with a game, sure vent a post about it. Its when you continue to pick it apart that really borders on trolling with a vengence, what is the point to stick around in something that you don't like? Its like going to a movie that you hate over and over to scream in the theatre about how the movie sucks and how you would like it to have been made your way. Sure you can do it, but what purpose does it serve in the end?
I have never backed a game before in KS but this one so far is looking like it might be my first. Unless something comes out that I don't like I see myself throwing some cash at it. There is still a lot of time left before it goes up, so I'am keeping a close eye on it. So as of right now, its a yes but still waiting to hear more about what he has plans to do.
I think its pretty smart. He is not making a game for everyone and wants to see if there is a actually a population that is actually interested in it. He said they will be asking for 2 mil and if it is met, he will throw in 3 mil of his own money to make the game. If its not met the game is dead and nobody loses any money.
AD/HighElf/Healer-Support here, looks like I will be in high demand.
Yeah I agree, I've liked them all, but this one is the best so far. I like to have choices that have good and bad consequences.
Since when did anything for free not attract d-bags from all walks of life. Get used to it, they are the future of F2P gaming. LOL
I agree with the dude to a certain point about alot of the things he is saying, but I can't stop thinking while watching him that little one liner "Cocaine is a helluv a drug". I doubt ESO will be for hardcore fans though, I don't think we will really see any anymore. Also damn I hate the Yankee's. Phillies/Eagles fan here and we know lots about losing.

I disagree entirely. Its ruining the genre into a type of fast food crap fest where nobody is part of a community within these games anymore. Your just a random number drooling ATM machine for these companies that try to entice you into buying some crap from a cash shop to make some money off you.

When I play a game or go out to eat, I expect top notch service and a quality experience. I don't go to buffet's because you get neither, as I don't play F2P because you get neither.

F2P just allows a crap game to stick around longer than it should, there is no quality control built in with it. A subscription game allows players to show if the game is good or not, if the game is crap you lose all your players, hence you lose your income. F2P you only need a few players who dish out tons of money to keep it alive with droves of others that just pop in to try it out, which is the same as the old free trial system which had nothing wrong with it.

So you believe GW2 is a crapfest?  Or is it "above" F2P titles because you have to purchase the box? You overgeneralize the concept to the point that its unrealistic.

The bottom line remains in F2P you get to pick and choose what parts of the game you want to purchase/play.  Having the discipline to not use the cash shop or believe someone buying something they want somehow affects your gaming experience is a different conversation.

And to your example, I prefer the buffet because the service you pay for is probably subpar.  Just because you pay for something doesnt necessarily mean you get (additional) value.  Its an assumption marketers have been gaming for years.

Yes I think GW2 is a crap fest. They can't even fix the game becasue they are rushing out holiday events so they can cash in off the gem store while disregarding the actual game part.

I'am not talking about chain restaurants chief. Really? You think you get more value out of free stuff when your talking about a product? Do you buy some cheap peice of crap in a store if it has some other peice of crap that comes with it free over something thats a bit more expensive and is built better and think you got a deal?

Will there be people that never move with ! over their heads in the movie?

I can live with that if it will be tied into the different pay models or even fluff, I just don't like seeing stuff in a game that has to be purchased with real money if I'am paying a full sub on top of it.

Mark,

I have been reading all your Foundation Principals so far and have been agreeing with almost all of it so far. But today reading your #3 blog, I have to say the comment about the cash shop has been off-putting to say the least. I will pay a sub if a game is good and I enjoy playing with no problem, but I will not buy anything from cash shops and think they are crap in this genre.

Everything else I like so far, this cash shop talk though makes me hesitant on supporting this project now. I never have given money to Kick starter companies because nothing has compelled or interested me enough too. I was planning on contributing some when your ks goes live if I still like the sounds of your vision, but this cash shop talk is questionable.

So a simple question...

What as a developer are the advantages of having a cash shop in the game and how does that allow you to improve the quality of the game for the customers?

I loved all the choices in DAoC they gave with the class selection. I always thought after that game that every game would expand on different classes, but they all went the other way with having jack of all trade characters. I really hope they go with a nice selection of classes here.

Don't knock the game until you've tried it.

While I understand where you are coming from, I do not agree.

Games such as TOR would have benefited from fans questioning its direction.

Since TESO is in  alpha, I would argue that it has the most to gain from early feedback or debate.

I'am gonna shoot from the hip here and say thats what they are having a Beta for. They arent charging for it and seem they actually would like player feedback. Its kind of hard to complain about a game you havent played and only read about on forums.

Long post about my feelings

Sounds good, not every game is made for everyone. I guess you will not be playing this one.

A lot of people sure likes to bitch about EA (with good reason) but will happily in the same breath fork over cash for titles such as the Mass Effect, Battlefield and The Sims series.

Put your cash where your mouth is. Otherwise being hypocritical is just a full time sport for you

I would be guilty of buying BF3 and enjoying it but it has no cash shop. If it did I would not play it. I do not support cash shop games because I do not like having to buy anything else that should already be in a game. But people who keep supporting these cash shop games will soon see it go out of control and everything will have to be purchased.

Thanks, I will do the same since you add nothing of any signifigance with your ground breaking posts.

And, if it is not about being Elder Scrolls, why is it called "Elder Scrolls Online" in the first place (there could be one reason for that, but i will avoid to mention it this time :P )?

Yeah, this is the problem I have with the whole debacle.  Maybe the devs didn't figure they could get anywhere without putting a popular IP on the box, because while faction locks are slightly irritating in and of themselves, the point is that ESO is attached to a game series that has been going strong for a decade and a half based on exploration in a sandboxy environment.

Now we get a watered down version with more spell effects and rigid MMO mechanics.  Why bother?  It might be a great game, but it's not Elder Scrolls.

The ES single player games are more focused on story telling, they are playable books with crappy combat thrown in between the pages. That doesnt transfer over to an MMO style game well no matter how you try and slice it.

Theproblem here is there is no problem, its just your opinion on how they are doing it is your own and you feel the need to tell everyone about it. The PvP is based around 3 faction warfare, if they didnt have faction locks it would fail to be what they are trying to make this game into. If you don't like it, don't play it, its pretty easy. I don't get people who harp on stuff they don't like instead of finding something else they do like or better yet making it themselves.

FORGIVE ME MASTER, FOR HAVING AN OPINION ON THE INTERNET THAT DOESN'T MATCH YOUR OWN!  I SHALL KEEP THEM TO MYSELF!

*prostrates*

Ok, obviously your all about post count, thanks for confirming this. GW2 does nothing for me, but do you see me making posts about how the game is nothing like I think it should be? No, because I don't plan on playing it.

And you're obviously about telling me that there's a problem with me telling other people my opinion on a public forum.  OH EMM GEE BILLY!  Not to be rude or anything, but that's the silliest complaint I've heard today.  But hey, maybe you can tweak your own advice and you know, not read my posts if you don't like them.  Nowhere did I say I don't intend to play the game, especially not based on something that really doesn't bother me that much, just that it seems to be a problem for others and I can understand their POV.

So you like to complain just to complain, ok I see your POV.

*Edit* fixed your to the proper place, thanks for the grammar correction.
