All they have to do is stay away from the trash F2P model to make money. Get 100-300k niche crowd and keep a small team to knock out some cool features and updates and you will win in the end. 

Chasing the few thousand whales to come and set up a credit card swipe fest on your game is over. The asians are ruling that market now and pooping out a new flavor of the month f2p crap fest every few months for that type of player.

I have to fully disagree with the OP on this topic, maybe he is living in a dream world or wants more F2P crap even faster than a few months. Crowd funding is the new hot shit and F2P is the old crap fest, except it.

I didn't back the game for the rewards though, I backed it to kill people. The more OWPvP games there are the better. These PvE games are a dime a dozen and all crap, so PvP is where its at for me.

I disagree with that definition. AAA has always meant high quality in my gaming circles. And those old mmorpgs were low quality experimental games. Memorable experiences and a lot of fun, nonetheless.  
And this is what we are headed back too right now. Big companies with the money to fund AAA mmo's are scared to throw all that money away on anything new or innovative right now. They lost big money or didn't make as much as projected from copying WoW which should of been technically easy money from their spread sheets and accountant break downs. They don't want to back a new ip with a crazy idea because of the risk of losing money so we are now left with the DIY'ers trying to revive and show the big guys how to do it again.

 

Right now we are in the bland and boring era. We need the craft brewer/DIY guys with little to lose to come through and drop some greatness on us.


 

The diy guys are busy making niche MMOs for bitter vets. That greatness ain't dropping anytime soon.

Better than getting WoW clone rehash #23 from the big guys every other month for the masses to consume and spit out.

Lol this is too funny. Nobody is complaining about cash shops for cosmetic things. I think KS is a great idea and will show AAA companies what will be the next big thing. 

Big publishers are stuck in a Rut, they don't want to kick out a ton of money to a new ip with crazy ideas for a game because its too high risk. They played it safe for the last 10 years trying to bank off of WoW clones that kept falling on their faces and now it seems they have thrown in the towel on any innovative type mmo games.

I hope a few of these KS'd games do some new type of thing right or in a different enough way to make the games feel new again. If they can pull of a few major features I bet not long after that we will see announcements for a new AAA game with said feature plus more in the works.

It's coming along great MJ. The large battles are going to be cool as hell, that's what I'm looking forward to the most in CU. Experiencing the transformation of CU into a game is pretty cool so far, you guys just keep on doing stuff right and we all win.

Does this worry you at all? I think its a great move. The game is only in the know of people who follow MMO games daily so any chance to get the word out to more people is the only move they have. If they get an extra 100k from doing it I would say that it was a good move. Without the backing of a major label they have to make all the moves themselves and since most of the more well put together KS with some of the these mmo's are being managed by guys that have been in the business and know what they need to do on their own.

Its funny how the same couple people are always bitching about Kickstarter whenever a new hyped MMO game is on it.

I understand why they do it, as with rare exceptions, you have to advertise a product to get people to buy it.  And I certainly don't blame this site for taking the money for ads that are undeniably gaming-related.  But that doesn't mean I have to like this use of kickstarter.

Advertising is how a new IP and unknown Studio have to get money. I don't understand. I understand you are not for KS and thats fine. I hate F2P games and do not DL or click on them so I guess its the same type of thing.

Hey Ryan, Glad to see more PvP centered games coming out. I missed your KS and have been following the game loosely waiting for you guys to flesh the game out a bit more before I pull the trigger and give it a shot. So to the question, are you planning to have some larger updates soon that will be adding more features to the game?

Gameplay is decisions.  Specifically decisions related to the game rules.

So it's definitely non-gameplay if his only form of entertainment came from socializing, since that's effectively outside the game rules.  Chat happens inside the game, but chat isn't the game.

Fighting mobs is gameplay, so depending on whether he did a lot or a little that would determine how much decision-making (gameplay) he actually experienced.

But most travel is effectively non-gameplay, because it involves virtually no decisions.

Wow ... I've heard of only one of those games (edit: 2). Some look cool though. Looks like a great platform for indie development. Tempted to try Ori though someday.

 

My only concern is if it is a wise choice for a mass pvp mmo game. 

Unfortunately it is not. It's not a real event based engine written in C++ like UDK. It's good for 2/2.5D games with limited size. It's good for 3D games with limited areas/size. It's not able to cope with the load of full open world MMO requirements.

Don't get me wrong, Unity has it's place and Ori is a good example what you can do with it. But AAA MMO quality is not something it can deliver, it's about as good as Hero engine in that respect and that one is completely unusable for anything serious or without a total re-write lie SWTOR did.

   I am also worried about this, the large scale PvP performance is crucial for CF. That topic is typically ignored by pro-Unity folks, they prefer to show wonderful landscapes and all kinds of shiny but-not-so-MMO stuff. (And BTW, Ori is lovely indeed ). Just to clarify, I am neither pro not anti-U but just curious about the PvP performance, and based on what I`ve read so far Unity 5 might actually be the best choice for team with this budget and schedule.

 

  That being said, I would be thankful if someone more knowledgeable than I am (what I know of Unity 5 is based on 15 minutes of Googling) would comment on the following: 

 

  1) When asked about Unity 5 PvP performance, ACE programmer said this. Note that it was the second question asked (amongst the expected bunch of WOW!s and Nice!s), but he answered the 1st one and then went on to 3rd etc. The question was repeated by some other guy, again - no answer, and only when the first guy asked again (that is, third time overall) the answer came.

   What I am reading from this reply is that they probably didn`t have any large scale testing but they hope that Unity 5 improvements will prove sufficient!?

 

  2) Another "anti-Unity" comment I`d like to see clarified is "...the massive frame-rate drops when multiple entities appear on the screen..."  That post also contains some other interesting points...Maybe he simply had bad experience with Unity 4 in mind?

I doubt we will see huge battles in CF, I'm sure they are going to drop the bomb that the campaigns will be capped at like 50-60 players after the KS is done. I don't think Unity can do all the twitch based PvP in a huge scale without falling on its face.

That's all people expect from this site Rob. It's easy to get caught in hype sometimes and just as easy to fall into the negative team as well. It all comes down to personal taste, which in games varies quite a bit. Just don't become the Fox News site of gaming :) fair and balanced should only have one meaning, that's all we ask. 

Yes and No. There is no right answer because it is different for everyone on a personal level on what is fun for you. For myself, I would say there are no games out this minute that I enjoy playing in this genre. The last game I had fun playing and felt engaged in the world for a good period of time was Darkfall Unholywars. Now this game had many problems and was nowhere near perfect or even great, but they did some things well enough to make me want to log on for about 6 months. I was not a fan of the original game one bit, I liked the idea of it but tried it way too late in the development to get started. Starting off at the same time as everyone else though was great fun in DFUW.

Actually it wasn't even the game I was logging on for, as much as it was my clan mates and the "group content" feeling that the game had. I think that is missing for me in most of the AAA games that have come out the last few years. There is nothing in a PvE game for me anymore, I do not really feel any sense of accomplishment if I run the same instance 200 times to get a purple gear or down a world boss and get a orange sword. I long for PvP and all it brings to the game in itself that PvE could never try to imitate.

I myself like more to a game than fighting brain dead npc mobs and the bland fetch quests that are all too common in just about every game today and in the past. I always liked the Open World PvP side of games because of the unpredictability of it all. I also like the politics side of games like DFUW, you cannot have that in an PvE game unless you are talking about inter guild drama. Alliances, backstabbing other guilds, strategic wars, spying... stuff like that is only possible in a PvP based game. 

I tried AA and that game just fell flat on what I wanted from a game. Not even going the bashing the cash shop route (which was a huge turn off in itself) the PvP felt like it was missing depth. I also tried ESO which I could just not get into at all. The PvP was about engaging as GW2, keep trading and zerg blobs moving around the map 24/7. 

I'm glad to see these indie studios coming out with more PvP focused games instead of more PvE, so maybe in the near future I can find a quality game for me. Camelot Unchained and Crowfall are types of games I'm interested in playing. CU more so because it is going to have a more persistent world. I hope the concept that MJ was describing with the land masses being able to be owned by factions will not change hands as fast as keeps in ESO and GW2. That would get old really fast. I would rather have a long battles with strategy needed to obtain things than a quick roll over of property. Crowfall sounds like its going to be a more quick turn over style game, get in the action real fast and turn things over and over. I will probably get burnt out of that style game faster than a long strategic battle style game. Eh, enough rambling but you asked :P

It's going to be F2P if it ever launches, I wouldn't waste money on a F2P game. 

I just hope people stop using unity
