It IS hard.  They actually said you would never be able to pay real money for content/items.  Your subscription would get you everything, and nothing would set us apart other than actions in game.  You can be a fan of the game and still love it without trying to spin.  Zenimax has gone back on their word.  If you are ok with that, then great.  Don't pretend it didn't happen though.

Waited for this game for a long time.  Won't be playing now.  Leveling a character to play an RVR game that sells items for real money is a waste of time.

On a different not, I still think that there is money to be made in developers keeping promises, and not trying to squeeze the most money out of their game in the shortest time possible.  Unfortunately, we now know this game isn't going to be the one to prove it.  I had high hopes for Matt Firor too.....

Oh well.  Perhaps Camelot Unchained will be the one.

A lot don't think selling items like a horse in the cash shop is a big deal or a problem for the game.  Matt Firor (the one that did a lot of interviews last year) disagrees with you.  He said it would be bad for the game, so ESO would never do it.

This has been discussed so much when it happened that I doubt many will respond to the poll.

 

It may seem stupid, but it's a deal-breaker for me.  I have been waiting for the game for years, and played some beta.  I was hoping for DAOC2 RVR, but I now think it will be more like GW2.  The original hope for DAOC2 was WAR.  They tried to water it down to appeal to a wider audience, and it ended up being forgettable.  In my opinion, ESO seems to be following in those footsteps.

 

Most folks seem to like the idea though, so I guess we'll see how it plays out.  Giving the masses what they want will be good for the game's success in the short term.  I think it will shorten the longevity of the game though as the masses move on to the next new thing, and there really isn't much niche-type interest like we saw with DAOC.  Then again, I never thought WOW was all that great - so my predictions aren't perfect.

The forums are a place to discuss games.  There isn't much to discuss when everyone is in complete agreement. 

Some people truly dislike a game, and perhaps want to influence future games.  Some want to improve a game by eliminating or changing those aspects that they don't like.  Both involve criticism.  I know that complaining about games has little chance to impact the games themselves, but it sometimes works.  Take the race lock thing...Many complained about it for so long and so strongly that it eventually went away.  If this doesn't make sense to you, then imagine getting your way:

Topic - "I think this game is perfect"

Post 1 "me too"

Post 2 "me too"

Post 3 "me too:

Post 4 "I hope they never change it"

Post 5 "OMG me too!"

and so on would be pretty boring and completely pointless.

Like you, I've been hoping for DAOC RVR.

It seems to have been their intent on making RVR similar to DAOC at one point.  I think now though that some of the core elements that made DAOC what it was are now missing. 

For one, there aren't separate servers.  Instead, there is automatic instancing that tries to match you up with people based on some algorithm.  I'm not sure how it all works, but  think you will have guild mates and close friends, but you won't be seeing all the same people (server-wide) all the time.  Semi-famous people and rivalries will be a lot less common. 

The second has been talked about incessantly for the last week, so I'm sure you are aware.  The developers caved on the racial unlocks, which has made a lot of generic MMO and ESO people very happy.  It's bad news for the DAOC crowd though, as the RVR will now be mirror-image teams (less faction-centric tactics, and less realm pride).

Combat to me feels more like GW2 or normal MMO stuff.  I won't go into specifics due to NDA.  Try it yourself though, not everyone feels that way and many will argue passionately about it.

The final thing is that they have started to go down the road of real money for game content.  That's a slippery slope that won't end well.  As soon as the cash shop starts to give someone a leg up in combat, then game over.

Excited to see more of this game.  An MMO with some realism is a pretty cool idea.

I think you are way off.  I played for a few months at release, then gave it up.  I just re-downloaded it yesterday, looking for a little something different from the games I've been playing recently.  I expected a ghost town, or at least a diminished population.  Surprisingly, there was as much or more action than what I remember from many months ago.  The game is still going strong.

 

Don't sweat the deaths.  No matter how skilled you are, you will die a lot.  Measure your performance by what you were able to accomplish before the inevitable death.  I take great pride in eliminating the enemy's ammo supply, one bullet at a time.

I don't think they are very similar.  ESO combat is much more standard MMO style.

There are several issues brought up that can be explained away by "it's not going to really affect gameplay that much", or "it's not really that much money, who cares?"  The biggest problem for me is the trust issue.  As soon as someone or some corporation demonstrates that they will violate their own promises with no explanation (no matter how insignificant the result is), then you know that no other promises they made mean anything, and neither do future ones.  Trust is like virginity.  It is easy to lose - and once it's gone, you can't get it back.

 

Yes.  For all the reasons people have posted.  It isn't intended to be huge.  It has a very enthusiastic following among it's target playerbase, and nothing similar is out there to compete with it.  It should succeed, and may be a wildly successful niche game.  If Mark can come through with a decent game, the players will be there.

 

As for the current funding plans, the new fundraising is up.  People who get on board now will be "builders" vice "founders", though the access to beta and other benefits are similar (not identical).  I intend to get on board this week, so I only know what I've read on the site.  If anyone knows better info, please share.

If you are looking at the lore and the game strictly as lore-friendly  ES, then you are right.  The idea for the factions was retarded.  So was the whole RVR going on.  ES as an MMO according to lore should have a lot more freedom, open PVP in many areas, full loot, etc.  I don't think that was the real reason why they made the decision though.  They wanted to create an RVR game like DAOC, and forced the lore to fit that vision.  If you are a DAOC fan, you probably like that decision.  Many others hate it. 

The bottom line is that they stuck with that vision until recently, then made changes to it for some reason.  I think it was forced on them, though others have different explanations (Arglebargle's post above is a well thought out example of one).  It's all just opinion right now.  Executives at Zenimax know the exact answer, but all we can do is guess/discuss/argue right now.


 

no they should not have made an open pvp game with full loot, that would have been a disaster.

by the way, ESO has open pvp in some areas, just not full loot.

 

Of course.  I was just saying that for those wanting perfect lore-game agreement, it would have been more believable.  For me, playability trumps lore...but its a fine line.  As long as the developers have a vision for a great game, and stick with it -  rather than destroying the longevity by trying to milk as much money as quickly as possible, more power to them.

If you are looking at the lore and the game strictly as lore-friendly  ES, then you are right.  The idea for the factions was retarded.  So was the whole RVR going on.  ES as an MMO according to lore should have a lot more freedom, open PVP in many areas, full loot, etc.  I don't think that was the real reason why they made the decision though.  They wanted to create an RVR game like DAOC, and forced the lore to fit that vision.  If you are a DAOC fan, you probably like that decision.  Many others hate it. 

The bottom line is that they stuck with that vision until recently, then made changes to it for some reason.  I think it was forced on them, though others have different explanations (Arglebargle's post above is a well thought out example of one).  It's all just opinion right now.  Executives at Zenimax know the exact answer, but all we can do is guess/discuss/argue right now.

Absolutely right.  The lore was stretched in order to explain why the RVR battleground exists with three factions fighting over it.  It wasn't a case of creating a game to describe/simulate lore that was already in place.  They made a decision early on that the game experience they were after was more important than the lore. 

That being the case, there were always going to be plot holes or incongruities between the game and the lore.  Last minute changes now make them slightly worse (reference the OP's question), but nothing earth shattering.
