Darkfall - the game you won't ever get to play
General Discussion « Darkfall 4/21/08 10:25:18 PM
What a rip. Third? DF should have been at least 2nd on that list!@ Ok, so Duke Nukem Forever and Ever is No. 1 one... nobody can dispute that. But DF is easily No. 2. DF fans should rise up and ^#%$^&@. Let them know that Darkfall deserved better than third! |

Some of these PVP beta reviews are misguided...

Originally posted by Arcken Moderate innovation sells. Epic innovation fails. You still have to work within the boundaries of what is playable on today's hardware, and hardware that is already 2-3 years old. I've been driving a car with four wheels for a lot more than 10 years. That doesn't mean I can walk into a Toyota or GM lot tomorrow and ask for six wheels next year, just cause I think cars are 'stagnant'. What you get in AoC are some tweaks, twists and improvements on systems that have been used before. And the gore and M rating. If that's not your game, maybe something else is. |

Originally posted by Alden120 Don't worry Alden, someone will make your game. Some day. Like some day 10 years down the road. But hey, you have fun waiting, eh? AoC will not appeal to everyone. Too hardcore for some, not hardcore enough for others. Doesn't matter. If you like the game, you'll play it. Drop by in 6-12 months to find out how many hundreds of thousands are still playing, and ask them if they're having fun. Of course, some people will never try it and will continue to wait for their 'perfect' game that appeals to EVERYONE. and they will still be waiting... and waiting... and waiting.... and waiting..... :) |

Originally posted by originalegg Why does it need to "CHANGE THE FACE OF MMOs" to be fun? Why does a MMO get tagged with 'FAIL' if it isn't revolutionary? It's not WoW, as you admit, and really, that's all that matters. That, and it's fun. If it's a good game, and fun, it will be more than "moderately" successful. And it doesn't need to hit WoW 2008 numbers to be successful. If you're looking for revolutionary, and maybe Darkfall is that game, you better be prepared to wait 5-10 years. Because there is no 'revolutionary' game "on the horizon." Darkfall is so far off the horizon, it might as well be in orbit. |

Originally posted by Sovrath Agreed, players demand release dates, and the firmer the better. It's need to know info. But what most players do not understand or accept is that betas are fluid. It's not just adding art or balancing features, it's trouble-shooting. And that is hard to nail down, especially when you are being innovative. If the game is not ready, I'd like to know who set the May 20 release. When they last announced a ( last-minute) delay, why didn't they allow themselves a little more dev/polish time? Shouldn't they have pushed it back into Fall 2008? Is it that critical to release AoC this summer? |

Originally posted by therain93 SWG was classic for a game that released too early. That one, I remember being in beta for the last 2-3 months, and remember all the long and detailed posts about why it should be delayed. So I got the early warning and didn't sign up at release. A year later, they were still adding content they had promised pre-release, and classes (like Smuggler) were still screwed up. It was playable, if you liked solo-group levelling (join a group and run off to kill things by yourself, gaining 'group' experience while soloing... which I thought was very, very strange). And that was just before the first expansion, with people on the forums crying for a change to the combat system. (Yeah, that worked out well too). I still think WoW was the last game that released smoothly. They had cut features, but it was still smooth. The queues on some servers were extremely long, but other than that it was not bad. That was more of a design philosophy error than hardware/code error. Rarther than putting a hard cap on servers, they allowed unlimited people to join a server... and my server was one of the most popular in the first couple months. The true test of a game is where it's at 1 or 2 years down the road. Did they implement the features (or regions) they had promisted earlier, and like all MMOs had to cut? Did they stabilize servers, add content, etc, etc. And the biggest question of all, did gamers give them a chance? |

people asking for more solo content is kind of ironic

The sad truth is there aren't too many good single-person RPGs out there. In the last couple years the ones that come to mind are Oblivion in 2006... NWN2 2006... and um? (Some people like Witcher 2007, but I haven't tried it. Mixed reviews.) Seems if you want to play anything reasonably new in the RPG genre, it's going to be MMO.

If someone can't afford $50 plus $15 a month, then they have no business playing MMOs and need to find a different hobby. If someone buys every single game that releases in a year (eg. $500), they need to seek qualified professional help. |

Originally posted by daylight01 Yes, actually I would throw it in the bin. But then again, my camera (and kit) is worth $7k. So I wouldn't really expect a $50 camera to produce anything worthwhile. When you spend $7,000 on a MMO, then you may have reason to be concerned. $50 is one good night at the bar. |

Seven years and counting. Actually it's only been six for me, I didn't hear about it until I was in SB beta. But it's not like I'm "waiting" for the game. I'm waiting for AoC and WAR, because I know those games will release. Darkfall is like DN Forever... just laugh at the fanbois, and if it does come out decades later, have a look. Same as Prey, which took 11 years. I found a PC Gamer article by Duke's devs in 1997 -- at the time they had planned a '98 release. They sound an awful lot like DF devs, if you ask me. (Just fyi, the original Duke Forever game was expected to require 16 mb ram, but recommended a very, very steep 32 mb!!!!. :) ) If you created a Top 10 vapourware list, Darkfall would be in the Top 3. |

Does any dev now stick to a release date or is it just eye candy?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/11/08 6:55:25 AM
Any dev/publisher who says we can start and finish a MMO in 2 years or less is dreaming. And yet, they still do it, announcing a game in 2008 with a 2009 release. Three years is a stretch. Four to five years seems to be the norm. Just once, I'd like to see a dev say, "We have a five-year plan. We'll release in 2013... and if by some miracle things go better than expected, we might even release 6 months early." Of course, that will never happen. The ideal situation would be having MMO devs/publishers shutting their mouths and PR machines until the game is ready to enter beta. Then it could release in 6-12 months, or 2 years at the most, and everyone's happy. Are they worried they won't get enough beta testers? They shouldn't be. Seems like EVERYONE applies for beta these days. In fact, that's all some people do is hop from one beta to another, and never playing a retail game for more than a month. |
