Q: Will Polymock come back as an activity in Guild Wars 2?

John: The original version of Polymock was one of those instances where we had something that we really wanted to be able to do, but we weren’t able to see it fully realized in Guild Wars. Polymock was one of Colin Johanson’s side projects during Eye of the North. He envisioned it as something that was fully turn-based, a very different game unto itself. It would have played up the collectible element, and the meaning to bringing different pieces into the game. Unfortunately, that wasn’t something we were able to do at the time with the resources we had, but it is something we can do with Guild Wars 2. So if you see Polymock making its return, it will be in a more robust implementation, to reflect what we had always wanted it to be.

300 is just an estimation. http://www.gamebreaker.tv/blog/legendary-theme-music/2010/12 if you watch this they mention that there is most likely far more than 300 people, and thats only counting the ones that were participating and not the people that just happened to be there.

Well first of all was there lag?  B/c the last time i played WoW and numbers like that were on the screen i was having 4-5 second lag minimum.  Its hard to tell how much lag is going on there b/c the guy taking the video literally just runs around and doesnt do anything

I remember Wintegrasps that had so much lag you would press and instant cast ability, run around for about 3 minutes, then the instant would go off.   The only way they were able to fix this is by creating a seperate WG instance that was limited to a certain number of players.

Edit:

But if this is real and there is no lag issues at all then grats to blizzard.  B/c WoW certianly never preformed that well when i played, and it was/is always better at large scale combat then most of the other mmos out there.

it is real. it took place during the after-party of the Legendary Podcast.

Its really an achievement to have so many ships in one place with beautiful wallpapers in background. ;p. take everything out in the surroundings in any fanatsy MMO, make the background bland and empty and i am sure you can have that many players in one place..

It's still 6x greater than what Rift claims to be "next gen".

Yeah because it is such a  fair comparison isn't it? comparing an empty space sci-fi MMO to fantasy genre which not only renders players and monsters but also other millions of objects in background?  people are really grasping at straws here to make a point. its like comparing apple to oranges.

Ok change the other 1500 players into NPCs and trees and what have you and you still basically have 1610 players battling it out with little to no lag.... apples and oranges... I think not

No its not seriously... it is like comparing apple to oranges. You think it takes same power to render ships as the buildings, rocks, grass, the entire forest and every little detail that goes with it? why are you even comapring EVE here? yes it is amazing for what it can do for a space sim but you can't use it to show how fantasy genre is incapable of holding that many players at one place.

Do you know how many different ships were in that battle?

3110 ships including capitals, dreadnaughts, Battleships, ships all freaking shapes and sizes and ships that can cover the whole map of Rift and you're telling me its not comparable? What kind of BS are you spouting? All those ships are firing at the same time, sending commands to the server on top of the fact that there are other battles going on elsewhere and everyone else is doing their own thing in other systems (Jita, basically the economic capital of Eve was still running without lag with about 1k people int he system at the time) WITHOUT LAG and you tell me its not comparable? Seriously, apples and oranges my arse..

I am not spouting BS i am just being sensible here and know that there is no comparison between the two. What EVE can do is great for space sim so should compare it to other sci-fi MMOS not to fanatsy genre. i seriously can't believe you are comparing thousand of ships to millions of objects which are rendered in fantasy mmos. Character models with armors, weapons, pets, mounts etc alone takes more power then what you can use to render those 3000+ ships.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/world-of-warcrafts-mad-cow-against-the-naked-orcs/

if WoW can hold that many people in one place without lag, then the amount of people Rift can hold isn't really special.

Gameplay mechanics were also elaborated by the title's lead designer, and one thing that was detailed was the instance system. NCSoft's game will provide a more uninterrupted, persistent world with less instances, but even so, these will still play a very important role in it. “We use a lot less instancing than we have in the past,” Flannum said. “The game is structured much more like other MMOs, with the world consisting almost entirely of fully persistent areas. That being said, we have a number of different ways in which we use instancing.”

“Dungeons, for example, are instanced areas designed for group play. We also use instancing very heavily in the players' personal quest chain to reflect decisions that the player has made on those quests. For example, Logan Thackeray, captain of the Seraph, has an office located in Divinity's Reach; his office is instanced because we need to update his status based on choices the player has made.”

Notice some of the key quotes in that paragraph gw2 fanboi's "instance system", "less instances", "number of different ways in which we use instancing." "We also use instancing very heavily...."

"We also use instancing very heavily in the players' personal quest chain to reflect decisions that the player has made on those quests." thats the personal story only. not the whole world.

I love how you guys take vague statements and turn them into facts.

In the hopes that you do HTFU (Hype The Feck Up or Harden the feck up) here's a link; http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/dynamic-events/dynamic-events-overview/

Now go do some reading, and if you have more questions after that, here is some more links to read;

http://www.arena.net/blog/colin-johanson-answers-your-dynamic-event-questions

http://www.arena.net/blog/eric-flannum-answers-more-of-your-dynamic-event-questions

Now lets not lose track of what we're talking about here. RIft's menacing dragon.

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gc-10-guild-wars-2/703347

this should help. it certainly doesn't look instanced to me.

CONSIDER YOURSELF RE-EDUCATED.

GW2 is a persistent world but not seamless... apparently. GET IT RIGHT FANBOY. hehehe

You can't try and prove someones post wrong when you say apparently. that just takes any facts you present and throws them out the window. But yeah, I guess I meant persistant since I assumed most people used both words for 1 meaning.

Considering I've only seen one portal (which is the gates that lead to the city of Divinity's Reach) I can only say apparently because I haven't seen more between zones.

But yea, it seems like our student doesn't want to take our word for it.

i agree. proven facts just don't seem to work on him.

Its a cool looking boss but its just another instanced boss with the way GW2 works.

I would rather have a seemless open world.

actually that boss fight happens at the end of a dynamic event.

Yes but (and correct me if im wrong i dont folow GW2 that much)

GW2 is not a seemless world.  Its just a series of instances that you can teleport between.

i will correct you because you are wrong gw2 is not a series of instances like gw1, but you can teleport between waypoints set on certain spots of the map.

I just did some research and it sounds to me like the yare having an instance world.  Its persistant but still instanced.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/473/view/forums/thread/287180/Everything-We-Know-about-GW2.html

this thread should correct any misconceptions you have.

Quote from that source:

"The majority of the world, with the exception of dungeons and personal storyline, is set in a persistent world and isn't heavily instanced like its predecessor."

Sounds instanced to me.

WoW is instanced too then. What part of "ISN'T instanced" do you not get?

I think you misread that b/c i read  "isnt HEAVILY instanced".

exactly. gw2 is not heavily instanced. it has a persistent world with instanced dungeons and a section of the pc's capitol city also instanced.

Enjoy your shallow game for a few months until real EPIC feeling games arrive in the guise of SWTOR and GW2.  Until then, I'm quite happy in WoW, Lotro and Darkfall because they do EVERYTHING better than Rift.

Next gen my ass.

I have to laugh at this post. even though its childish whatever you have written i would like to assure you of one thing. SWTOR and GW2 will burn on these forums in the same way. Quote this post, print it and stick it on your wall. There will be so much moaning and crying when these two titles will come out that there won't be enough buckets in the world to hold the tears. I will come and poke you then when you will be defending these titles like a white knight and fighting the trolls with tooth and nail.

GW2 and SWTOR are not innovative in any way. They are like Rift, doing couple of things different but not breaking any barriers or trying to bring any revolution to MMO genre. For all those calling Rift linear, i would love to see there reaction when they will play SWTOR. its going to be priceless.

So you ve played both, cool tell me more.

i can ask the same question to those who call SWTOR and GW2 epic, innovative, revolutionay, next gen....

I am just looking for one word FUN, nothing more.

http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/dynamic-events/dynamic-events-overview/

under the section entitled "benefits to replay and exploring" Colin mentions the word fun.

he also uses it a few times during the manifesto video if you haven't seen it yet.
