We know mining at least will involve the voxel system and the different layers of the world. Gathering should be very different from themepark mmos.
I also though there was good opportunity for faction allegiance that leads to pvp with these calls, hopefully if enough people make this point the devs will get the message. Though such constructive criticism needs to get through the current wall of hate and miss-information being thrown around that the devs are having to address.

Yes, the "trinity" as in the classes and the kind of roles they can have are still pretty much in there, it just won't be the rigid and static roles we are used to. This isn't taking the trinity out like GW2, but improving the game mechanics so that they over take the trinity's effectiveness.

Storybricks was designed for players to make ever more complex npcs and quests, so i guess its the variations and complexity will start off more advanced than we've seen before and get more so as they figure out what else they can do with it. For once it will be limited by the devs imaginations, not so much the tech.


Of course it is still "just" code, but it's how it is put together and the degree of autonomy and capacity to react to the world around them that makes the difference.

True, I'll be getting Rome 2 and other genres, but other than StarCitizen I can't think of any mmo or mmo like games that are not eclipsed by this, I admit its a matter of personal taste, but I've been dying for a interactive environment in a AAA mmo for a long time.

Yes, but I felt the same after playing WURM, when you can change, move, destroy everything around you the environment feels more real and immersive, and since then I've looked at the static trees and ground of Rift or TERA and felt that I was just a tourist. Thanks to EQN it's now even worse.


Sandbox worlds are simply better.

The lion needs work but the human model really inspired me to try some machinima when it comes out. The quality of the facial animation could blur the lines between animation software and a game. If there are enough body animations you could pull of some serious story telling. You'd need some good voice actors who could control the avatars at the same time though.
Though controversial, the design decisions make a lot of sense, given the current mmo climate, and how all these new mechanisms should work with each other. This feels like a logical continuation of sandbox mmos I've played but yearned for a AAA version of, so i could not be happier.

Its not just their failure to understand what this is, its the miss-information and how out of touch they are with mmo development in general. 2 examples..

It is clear that by actually progressing the tech at long last, certain mechanics are rendered obsolete, I can understand some nostalgia, but the idea that the trinity is the only way or that the EQN devs are just doing this out of misguided whim shows they are not looking at the AI and other technical reasons, and don't care if the mmo genre stays in a rut. Big picture people. Not to mention that the trinity didn’t work in pen and paper RPGs as the GM was too smart for it, well now we come full circle with better AI, this isn’t the future vs. the past, this is a brief period of mmo design coming to an end, due to better tech and a long overdue return to rpg roots.


Neither SOE or any other mmo developer is obligated to hold back technological improvements on AAA services (how else will they arrive?), if you want a retro experience play older games, and I am sure there will be retro trinity games made my indie kickstarter types soon too, but fighting the inevitable is pointless. I love 8 bit, 16 bit old games, and new indie ones made in that style, but I don't think they should have not bothered developing 3D polygon technology.


2. The constant, lazy, unsupported, simplistic assertion that this is ALL about GW2.

The current trend with mmos for the last few years, from TSW to GW2 to DCUO, ESO and Wildstar is limited hotbars, there are many reasons for this. Cleaner UI, focusing on the actual game, less wrist strain, cutting out unnecessary skills/spells and the need for macros, situational skills replaced with situational movement and other reactions (tied to more action combat), opening mmos up to other types of gamers, etc etc etc.

It is fallacious to assert that this is due to 1 mmo and the bad parts of that have to now exist in EQN. This are just a part of overall mmo evolution. When you see haters argue this, all they do is state this as if it was a fact, there is no arguing from evidence, and the few second of combat footage does not count. This is about the mechanics, and what emerges from that, not lazy A = B thinking.


No imagination, no attempt to understand the devs, no broader context or attention to detail, this is why I am pissed with haters, not there position, but how insulting badly they argue for it.


Apparently new is evil, games should have no child like wonder of experimentation as kiddies suck, EQ1 was the perfect pinnacle, and we don’t need to see anymore, think about it anymore, just stick to this rushed conclusion, and rant about how the "fans" are deluded idiots, even though we are the ones basing our position on the actual evidence, and not logical fallacies.


See for yourselves, who here is citing what the devs actually say, what the tech is, and who is simply using slogans.


There is NO indication of how the cashshop will be handled in EQN at all in any source coming from the devs or SOE.

They have specifically stated many times that you gain all the post-character creation classes through behavior specific quests.

This isn't about SOE as a whole, I am not defending them, or even addressing them, this is about the developers making EQN, and those who are from EQ1 and 2 originally. This panel shows they are committed to the EQ legacy, and people can dismiss all this on the basis of other games SOE handled, or Smed's record, or whatever accuse you want.


What matters outside of possible publisher problems (such as ProsiebianSat.1 fo us in the EU) is why they are doing this. It is clear from the shortcomings of EQ2 - and the fact that they kept making the same mistakes during this games' development until this radical change of philosophy, which essentially amounts to a reverse NGE, that they are learning from mistakes either they or others in SOE made. Look at Dave Georgeson at 2:20 in this interview nod and smile at the SWG reference in this interview, could they be doing more to make up for NGE? (even though most of the EQN people where not responsible for it).


Then there is how they are doing this, (with tech we know has been tested), leaving the question of whether it will combine well together. But if you want to ignore the actual people making this, and the details then go ahead and say I am putting too much faith in them, but only one of us is actually talking about the facts of the game.



How about they show just a smigen of an open mind, and patience, too much to ask? But no, "its GW2/WoW coz we say so"!


EQN may have design aspects that are questionable (to some), and we may not like later reveals, but there is technology here that needed to evolve, mechanics that could not stay as they where, or the mmo would die.


Improved AI is objectively better, it is never good to fight stupid mobs, that is just one example of how this isn't just an alternative design philosophy but necessary and inevitable steps towards better, more "real" mmo worlds. If that means the trinity cannot function, then so be it, this fear of change is un-healthy.


I promise you that this period will be looked upon as an embarrassment...

...The bandwagon insults and jokes, the way it’s been taken so personally, as if their little group was all EQ is, the drama and emotionalism, the defending of ugly UI that takes up most of the screen (seriously?), the assumption that action combat means faceroll, and all this while ignoring the panels, presentations, interviews that address most of this.


...And last but not least, the assertion that their image of what EQ is as a brand is better than that of those that created it, all expressed with this condescension and elitist tone that really gets under my skin.


Why is it that SOE seems more in touch with not just the larger gamer public, but what those of us in sandbox land, and even the pen and paper RP-ers want than these so called old school EQ-ers? Oh and by the way, my mmo of choice right now is EQ1, shout out to my bros on Vox.


They seem to think that EQ1 and 2 are being replaced, but EQN is a parallel project, one that's looking towards the future. There are plenty of indie, kickstarter mmos building on old school mechanics, and I recommend they take a look at them, and leave the rest of us with this bold new experiment.

They sound so bitter, can't they be happy for us that have had our dreams come true? How about we hear from those that have been waiting for a true sandbox, that also reflects those aspects of AAA development that are worth incorporating. It is possible to yearn for the past and the future.

I had never considered wanting all around me to be destructible either, until I played WURM online, (indie, java, Minecraft's "Dad"), then after I realized as I wandered alone in the wilderness in 1st person view, that every... single.... thing around me, trees, bushes, the ground, cliffs, sand, could be dug into, chopped down, pilled up, etc, that I felt that this was a real world. Since then I have been unsatisfied with the attempts to make virtual world in mmos, but now SOE has made my dreams come true and put that feeling in a AAA product.


You have to immerse yourself in a world that is made of matter that responds to you with physics and not scripts to see what I mean. For exploration, housing and gathering/crafting its the only way to go.

Not sure it would work are far as humanoid PCs and NPCs as it would conflict with animations (and biology), but a robot mob or boss could work.

I disagree with some of what the OP says, for example those clinging to the trinity rather miss the point of its death, EQN is trying to evolve the genre, and make a real virtual world. That mean advanced AI among other things, which means, you cant have the trinity as it relies on the AI being stupid enough to attack the most heavily armored PC or whoever happens to taunt. (You still can play as tank and healer type classes, but they are not limited to a single role). You can't have it both ways, trinity or virtual world, and if you choose trinity you want your mmo to stay the same and not move forward, (and backward as this brings us closer to pen and paper D&D).



Also there is some knee jerk reactions going on here, assuming that everything similar to GW2 means it will be exactly the same as GW2 is lazy. As is assuming limited hotbar means faceroll combat, (given advanced AI that wont be the case).


So there is inconsistency here as those hating on some features don't realize that the features they like are the reason those other features may turn out rather well.

OK, one more time, they don't have to monitor everything made in game, as they only transfer manually objects from Landmark to EQN after a vetting process, yes some versions of Landmark will be full of crap, but EQN has dev control.

I counter with the clear mental health issues of many haters here. SOE's black boxing was annoying but it's easy to understand. They are only human, but I don't see a few teasing words from smed and some presentation gaffs being equal to the 10s of thousand of words of emotionalistic nothing we are seeing.

Firstly they are changing quite a few things and departing from many things they themselves established but all while keeping the Everquest name.

 They said they would, I don't see this as something that should shock people. That is why they call is NEXT and not EQ3 after all, and we all know how they changed the direction twice before this state. Sadly once more we see how those that demand innovation are the first claim "BETRAYAL!" or dismiss it cynically as "Not really innovation" pointing to how this single player game or indie mmo has a small part of one mechanic, (while ignoring none have all or even most on this scale if at all).

Secondly, on the flip side, they used highly charged buzz words like sandbox, genre defining and so on that generated a lot of hype without saying much which didn't manage peoples expectations at all.

 So leading to a lot of blind speculation, yet somehow people shouldn't be expected to be conscious that this is what they are doing? SOE are guilty of respecting the intelligence of their fanbase? Besides, given what they showed they have every right to use "sandbox" (Voxel based fss) genre defining, (It's pretty clear they did their homework and timed this well, we have the first and biggest, in terms of likely market share, of a new breed). Though these terms are "vague" the voxel tech alone means even the stuff still in concept art stage is more than possible.

By doing this they really ensured that there would be a huge amount of disappointed people not that I am one of them in the least.

Understood, but so far all SOE have done wrong other than possible issues with the trinity is use that blasted German company to manage the EU beta signups. Even then, regarding the game mechanics, we don't know enough to declare a Jihad on them yet.

It's a bit of a no win scenario if we can't criticise the endless hater rants without being branded ranters ourselves, firstly it doesn’t address any point we make and secondly if we just ignore such behaviour it will just lower the standard.


We are dealing with a troll band wagon here, at least I'd rather think that than this many posters are superficial and feel the need to repeat what so many others have said even if they aren't really saying anything.
