Agreed, people need to stop defending blindly, continued success is the result of responding to constructive criticism, not ignoring it. However a lot of "haters" of mmos have some truly terrible arguments, and it can be a chore to sift through all the garbage to respond to valid points, you have to really want to be thorough.

Constructive being the point here. Telling people to 'shut up' is never going to work. He may have valid points, but that will soon be washed away in a flurry of posts that will ultimately get this thread locked.

Yes, i was too focused on the arguments, which are reasonable, and missed the shut up part. I see the logic, not the emotional parts of arguments, its a habit you can get into.

Simplistic/Pixar-inspired doesn't necessarily mean a low poly count, although it does bring several advantages: a game would run on a much wider range of PCs, and it would age better than the equivalent “realistic” style. Although it’s not to everyone’s taste, there are deliberate reasons why MMOs go down that route.

Sure, many don't go for the art style, but in this case most of the criticism was directed at the graphics. Realistic has more problems than stylized, we all know that, but here it is not done that well, for example the crude rendering draws attention to the polygon count, which is not that much lower than in EQN, but far more noticeable as the shading isn't as smooth.

This looks more like a lower setting than was supposed to be shown, but I have never seen stills or footage look all that much better, alas.

God! This game art is atrocious. I cringe everytime I see it.

Look at the pic in the OP... Does it really look good to you? Really?!?

The caracters don't even seem to fit in. Especially that female cartoon on the right. Its so wtf... huh!

The 2006(generous) WoW meet SWToR step child low poly graphic is just too hard to bare in todays gaming scene.

Sorry, its my opinion & I'll stick to it.

Not even mentionning the insane monetization this game will have from all side, its just... bleh.

I love the art style, I think it's perfect for mmos, but you are 100% correct, it is let down by a terrible engine, this shot doesn't even have shadows turned on, which is why the characters seem disconnected from the scene. The images are flat and the texture mapping lacks material variety and definition.

If you compare this to shots from EQN, you can see the issue is the engine, SOE's Forgelight adds good shading, atmosphere and background detail that lets the characters look more 3D and similar to the animated films of today, (even though you may still not like the art style). Wildstar is going for for same esthetic, but you can see the contrast with the game footage and the pre-rendered trailer they released, which exploits the art style far better.

The flat look you can see in the pic may make sense for those cheaper or older mmos going for an animated look but it has dated horribly when you can go for a closer Pixar rendered look as SOE have shown.

It's a bit too accurate, a lot of people can't even get past the Full Real Battles tutorial as you are going into true simulator territory, and even the historical battles have a pace and realism that won't appeal to a lot of players used to the instant gratification of WoT. For e.g. my bomber had it's rudder shot off early on and I ended up trying to correct altitude for over 20mins while taking AA fire and getting lost in the cloud cover.

I get the feeling that this game is best used with a joytick setup and Oculus RIft.

Yes, I've had this confirmed by PAX and beta players, this is "soft" aiming, TES purists will not like it but its a technical limitation, Zeni seem very aware of the limitations of mmos, and rather than try to innovate they compromise.

I guess it won't be that bad once you get used to it, though I know some beta testers that hate it with a passion. It will at least superficially look like TES combat, and may be as immersive for some.

What I have problems with:

they are going to develop EQ:L after launch, work on bugs in EQ:L and, at the same time, work full-time on EQ:N development. I don't believe they have bodies for that, period. So how is it going to actually happen?

whoa - i never gave though to that

well said

They have a very large team, and this is SOE, they have more experience making mmos than anyone else, if anyone can do this they can. This is their flagship project after all, and a lot of the tech is designed to allow for faster development, so fast that we get to use a lot of it.

We have seen enough to know that the components such as the AI and Voxel tech are going to set the standard for mmos for the next decade, the question is whether they are put together in a way that makes for great gameplay, stable economy, player retention, etc, or whether a later one of the many "EQN clones" to come will do a better job.

Player made content (including the un-announced features) means that even though they have the people, they are allowing the millions of players this will have to add content, allowing them to focus on bug crushing and the other more boring stuff.

I think the delay till next year put everyone, dev and fan in a sleep mode for a few months as we are now too far from launch for the hype build up.

Personally Zenimax do indeed seem to realize what mistakes they made and are trying to made TESO a real elder scrolls game, but it should have been obvious to them, as it was to everyone else that a DoaC meets SWTOR clone was not what either mmo players or TES fans wanted, or at least expect from the IP. So now they are scrambling to get the console versions ready, and 1st person finished, good, I just hope there is a lot more they are working on to make it more Elder Scrolls such as housing and physics. More seamless open world would be nice too.

I suspect they are really focusing on more content to justify the box price and sub, content for the locusts, lvling and endgame, and preparing enough assets for the post launch updates. It will take a heck of a lot to convince all those that are waiting for the inevitable switch to f2p.

The tank combat will have to be very good to compete with WoTs, tactics, maps, targeting, will have to be very polished. They have better have British tanks from day one too, as they did with the planes.
First!    (coz a generic trailer and mmo like that deserves a generic response).

I think it's possible to dislike where most mmos have been going and still like what mmos where and could be. I think people will start to tire of the things the OP lists, and even though I will still play XIV, I wish they weren't there.

There is nothing wrong with wanting a challenge, non-tedious gathering, seamless open world, better group mechanics and other things the OP seems to yearn for. I hope the up coming sandboxes will be able to cater to such mmo players. It is wrong to say you don't like mmos at all if you criticize common mechanics, the current trends do NOT define this game type.

There is a lot about this version of XIV that I like, enough to look past the weak points, which I think the OP focused a little too much on. However, it's his impression, and I can see the flaws he lists are all there, other fans can deny it, but he's mostly right about gathering, fates, zoning, endgame, etc. I think XIV 2.0 has a lot of potential and will be re-subbing every few months to try the new stuff Yoshi and Co comes up with.

I think this review was fare for a subjective impression, the counters to the points would often have to be either subjective or citing things that would lie outside the OPs experience, including content updates that may fix some of the issues.

I notice that none of the critics of this review have actually addressed let alone debunked any of it's main points.

We kinda need a lot more details and good arguments, we are mmo players, and know what we do and don't want from these games, and even if you have good reasons for yourself not liking it, they may not be problems for others here.

Your sub goes up the more character you have on the same server. You can make up to 20 (I think) 1 per server with no extra cost.

There is no reason to make more that one character ever, unless you are torn between friends on different servers, the class system is build with maximising all melee, magic, craft and gather to 50 with one character. If you want a different race with certain classes, (you will be gimping yourself somewhat) then at least don't waste money on the same server.

Soule jumped ship to EQN as he feels it is a real cutting edge game, and he likes to work on projects that push the boundaries within their game sub-genre, (going by his comments on an interview from Aug). ESO may turn out to be really immersive and have some nice pvp, but though it's IP means it will sell very well, it won't exactly set the world on fire, EQN is a game changer.

Here's the interview.

He really seems to get the limitations of mmos (even the term), and that a social virtual world is what is needed, not the same old thing, even it's a great game, ESO is not what the genre needs to become, for that we need to look to indie and kickstarter projects like TUG, Pathfinder, Divergence, SotA and now a AAA innovator with EQN. But who cares, coz, yunno, !Disney! and stuff, right?

You don't have to do any sidequests with your first class really, if your following the main story quest and doing fates they are not needed till your 2nd combat class, and then to compliment leves. Your thinking too much like WoW where your one class has to lvl on all the quests per hub, just save them up, you'll be glad to have them to break up leves.  Each zone is meant to be tackled by the 3 (or 2 in LL) combat classes of the central town. They aren't great quests, but all quests are is a way of breaking up the grind anyway, you have choices in how to tackle the content.
So are tanks expected to heal as well now? As a healer I agree that if the tank focuses on grabbing all aggro and the dps keep the adds down then it goes smoothest.

Depends on what you like, you would need to list some goods and bads in mmos for you.

Personally there are things about FFXIV that drive me nuts, like the slow combat, 30sec loading screens, (as the EU servers are in Canada) semi voiced cut scenes etc. But the stuff I love includes the armory system where one character can be every class, the far less linear progression, the crafting being much more important, the great music and look of the open world, the story, and the general feel of quality, and that this is a labour of love for Yoshi's team.

It still needs work though, there are some missing features, but there are some great things coming in later updates.

ESO may turn out to be better for exploration and pvp, but looks ugly and dated to me. EQN will be f2p so get it anyway, if your into sandbox stuff you'd be crazy not to.

OK, just to clear this up, the genre for Star Wars is sci-fantasy for this reason, is has sci fi tech but fantasy tropes, (character archetypes and rolls, mystical lore, and romanticized history). For example Star Wars spaceships just work and their underline physics is never touched upon, whereas Star Trek’s Warp Drive has everything from blueprints, to serious science papers on it and entire episodes built around the applications.

To address the OP’s question ,I have been playing Star Trek Online as of late, and have found it to be very addictive, due to a layered progression and good Varity of content. It doesn’t require as much heavy investment as EVE does.

Yes, you can build anything, but are limited to fantasy only within the "Norrath" zone.
