I like how they are truly free. No restriction bullshit.

Subscribers get more, but free gamers don't get less.

A solid F2P for an AAA title.

Strongly recommend this.

That’s how I feel also, it's a very good model indeed, much better than recent F2P conversions and on top of that an excellent B2P option is available, best of both worlds really.

They just announced it's going free in the EU also and the model looks not bad at all!

It seems once todays maintenance is over the EU service is going to hear its fate, the community manager has posted on a thread stating the information is incoming later today.

Out of all the games you have for 2013 I just pray they get TESO right and it launches well. I consider it to have the best lore of any RPG and believe it could make a truly amazing MMO. If they manage to recreate an authentic Elderscrolls RPG experience but in an MMO I can see me playing this for years and years.

Begs the question to ask. Why is this impressive? Looks more of the same.

That’s the reason I stopped playing WoW after 7 years, it's just the same stuff rebranded over and over.

Looks great, I love the art style so much in FF games and hope this launches well for them 2nd time round.

I was happy with GW2 so it wouldn’t be in my list, in fact I think it's the best MMO out there if you can get away from the traditional mind set. SWTOR was the biggest disappointment along with D3 in 2013; Bioware/EA put everything into story and levelling but forgot about the rest of the game.

And you can use it on PC

It's great that people use their spare time to make these apps or sites and they should be commended.

However, It’s a shame there is no in game LFG tool yet. Regardless of how people feel about LFG tools GW2 is all about accessibility and a proper in game LFG system fits in perfectly with this ethos.

Nice app shame I can’t use it.

This functionality should be in the game.

Pretty surprised you chose D3 as one of your games it has to be said, think I played it for 3 hours and I've not touched it since and probably never will.

Think I must be the only person on the planet that hasn’t played Runescape, happy 12th anniversary!

Developing and testing tech for use in Titan would be my guess.

SOE did the very same thing with EQ2 and SOEmote so wouldn’t surprise me at all if Blizzard are using WoW as a test bed for Titan ideas. If they add something to Titan and it fails it’s a big deal but with WoW it doesn’t matter people will still play it even if it sucks.

1) Is this guy for real? In that case, every F2P game is a P2P MMO with a free to play option. Planetside 2 has a sub option.

2)There is no evidence of a population drop of active players.

Guess that means they are losing players? Lol.

3) (because you can't count properly) All new mmos earn new players at a F2P launch, duh. Give it time. There may be new subs, but less subs now then there were a few months ago.

4) SWTOR has added 1 new operation, a daily quest area, space mission "heroic modes" and like 2 new space missions, and a warzone. In that time frame GW2 has added tons of new events, a new spvp map, new mini dungeons, fractals (which is 9 new mini dungeons) and 3 massive events with tons of content each. Not to mention a whole new zone. Sure, some of thats temporary content, but it still is content. I would say wether or not GW2 has added more content is debatable. Thing is, you have to pay to enjoy most of that content in SWTOR. Space missions: Buy a pass, Warzone: Buy a pass, Operation: pay a sub, buy daily area.

Just wait until a couple of months from now when all you have is a failed illum revamp and GW2 has 2 more content patches.

Move along to a thread where you argument actually holds onto the straws you are attempting to grab.

Just to add to what you're saying, I played GW2 at launch, took a break and started playing again before Christmas and the first time I logged in checked the servers to see how the population had faired and to my surprise the servers were still packed, many showing high, several full and the rest medium, GW2 is showing no signs of a mass population drop off. I think I agree about the content also, the January and February updates are meant to be so large for GW2 you can call them an expansion according to the last interview so I don’t think the less content argument will hold water soon.

It's going to be interesting to see what is done with Illum as it was a major let down at launch, all the other additions sound great but actions speak louder than words so I reserve judgment until I see how things pan out.

What keeps WoW on top is the millions of fans that were gathered when there was no competition, now people feel compelled to play it as it's been so long and don’t like change.

I'm very impressed with the speed of these updates, Bliz really have stepped there game up it seems and that’s good for the fans.

You're not alone Mike for the first time in a long time I'm having difficulty finding time to play everything I want to. 2012 has been a great year for MMO's, so currently I'm trying to juggle, GW2, RiFT:SL and TSW.

If only GW2 had more traditional dungeons (tank/healer/dps or at least some sort of set role) I'd probably play that on its own.

Of course these are just my opinions:

TOR will affect the industry in how it gets big backing.  I think studios and publishers saw a limit to the value of high budget flash versus the risk involved.  I don't think its transition to Freemium will affect the rest of the industry at all.

Subscription Free and B2P - This is the new F2P.  Since there are so many ways to setup a cash shop and blend it with free access or sub-only, there are also many ways a sub-free game can present itself.  Traditionally we've had F2P and then Sub-Only.  With B2P showing success for GW2 and possibly TSW (time will tell), it has shown other sub-free publishers that they can charge an up front fee for greater access to the game, guaranteeing an initial revenue bump along with the cash shop supplement.  It has also shown at least one sub-only publisher that they can bring in a larger audience and generate more revenue with that option while still offering a subscription and premium status for an additional fee.

One of my biggest curiousities over the next year or so will be how subscription only games fare.  I think Trion should be a clear warning marker for the makers of ESO and FFXIV.  Rift: Storm Legion was popular, especially with the dedicated fans, but even with modest pricing didn't seem to make the splash and generate the success that was anticipated.  I think if Trion had moved over to B2P with an optional sub and cash shop they would have been much more successful.  I think this will be true for ESO and FFXIV (and Wildstar or whatever else is coming out as sub-only).  Those games will likely see some measure of success just for the IP and existing fanbase, but will be limiting their potential, potential that could be realized through a more hybrid payment option like you described in an earlier column.

In order for the hybrid models to succeed they will have to overcome a tricky hurdle.  That is they need to make subscription players feel like they're playing a sub game with all the benefits while offering a play experience for the sub-free cash shop player that doesn't funnel them into a subscription or place them at a permanent disadvantage.  They need to do all that while pricing themselves competitvely yet maximizing revenue.  It's not an easy position to be in.

One thing I expect to see is a blending of revenue models, continuing to muddy and blur the clean definitions we've established.  I also expect to see a slow move away from traditional fees across all publishers as they try and implement the more complex models I described.

I didn't mean to be so long winded, but some topics here can't be captured in 3 word soundbites.

As to Trion, there was nothing modest about the Storm Legion pricing, at $50 it was well above the norm for expansions.  It is not a wonder it did not do as well as some thought it would.    You should look at Lotro's hybrid, it is pretty similar to what you are describing.  We will see more hybrid models, but I don't think that the sololy subscription game is finished either.

I do not think you need huge amounts of money to make a MMO.  SWTOR and the failed 38 studios adventure were examples of projects with little fiscal control.  Both studios were so into fluff like voice overs, cut scenes which don't add cashflow to a game.  How 38 studios thought they needed 400 people for a MMO is ludicrous.  You can make a decent MMO today with far less people, mainly because the tools are so much better.   If you think about it, both studios had little experience in MMO design at the upper levels.  Add in no one watching expenditures verses financing and you have a receipe for disasters.  The only thing that saved SWTOR was EA's deep pockets, which I am sure they regret now.

When it comes to LucasArts, who knows what direction the new owner will take them.  Could be they will get into the MMO business themselves.

The 49.99 version was for the base game plus the xpac.  For those that already owned the game, it was the traditional 39.99, at least everywhere I saw it (gamestop, amazon, etc.).

Storm Legion actually sold far more than Trion were expecting.

That being said it will be interesting to see if they move to another model this year.

So here are my thoughts on this year’s games and expansions and what I’m looking forward to in 2013!

GW2: Without question is my favourite new mmo, really the only thing I don’t like about it is the lack of the trinity but that’s personal preference. I agree though I can see myself playing this for years to come and buying the expansions.

TSW: I’ve been playing this on and off since launch, the stories, cut scenes and dungeons are industry leading I think and I like the fact this game has sandbox elements but I don’t like it enough to play it as a main game.

RiFT: I still rate this game above all other theme park mmos and Trion are an awesome company. Storm Legion has been a great addition to the game and even though I don’t raid anymore it doesn’t matter because there are just so many things to do in this game. Dimensions are amazing and I can’t wait to see how they develop, it’s an exciting time to be a RiFT player that’s for sure.

MoP: I thought I would give this expansion a go because I still have several friends playing but it just feels like a really dated game now and I didn’t even last a month playing it ( even though I had played it for 7 years strait before). The cross server zones are probably the best feature and I do think it’s a brilliant bit of tech even though it has teething problems. Overall, it just feels like every other WoW expac where you end up doing the same things over and over.

ESO: This is the next mmo I’m going to seriously try being a massive Elder scrolls fan since before Morrowind I really can’t wait for this game to launch. I just hope they don’t release early like SWTOR and the game is fully polished at launch. I really feel if they can launch a polished product this game is going places as the lore is second to none and flushed out like no other.

Happy New Year everyone :)

Words are easy and going on past actions I certainly wouldn’t buy into this game or developer.

I think the legacy system was a great idea my problem with it was that you had to buy the perks not earn them which cheapened the full thing. They should have made it like RiFT's PA system where you had to earn everything through playing the game, as it stands it's a great idea poorly implemented. In hindsight this was done so it would work when they added the cash shop and they could cash in on people yet again.

It's been a pretty interesting take on the holiday, the jumping puzzle is good and although I'm terrible at it the piano game is fun. I've seen similar open world stuff before in RiFT but still it makes people go out and about looking for presents so it’s a nice addition.
