As a relative newcomer to territory control, you do not seem to understand why the HP total was lowered in the first place.  When the server actually had population, it was universally deemed that siege preparation was a painfully boring and 'unfun' process.  The devs understood that keep HP was too high for there to be fun sieging activity.  Much of the population quit because sieges were not fun except for a few brief moments of fighting, and when the fighting did occur half the enemy population was invisible.  Neither issue has been fixed.

The thread was deleted in the first 10 minutes of existence.  It only got to 40 people because of censorship.  I was pointing out the 5 to 40 relative trend in favor of a ban wall.  

Why don't you go look at any other poll posted on the Mortal forums that did not get censored and tell us how many people voted in total.

Even if they did go with stat loss, the repeatable feats provide endless supplies of prowess.

You go to the trouble of saying my statement is false, and yet you provide no workable alignment system.  What 'other penalties' are you talking about?

DF1 had an alignment system without penalty except access to starter cities -> the starter cities just became empty as they are now in DFUW.  No one cares about alignment if alignment has no teeth... history has proven this again and again.

AV hasn't even finished their class system and is already talking about sandbox classes -> this is great but it shows the half-assed effort they gave toward their original class system.  No one wanted themepark classes -> AV totally ignored its player base.  I don't have to assume they do things half-assed because they prove it over and over again.

There are three kinds of alignment penalties I have seen:

Geographic penalties like DF1.  Remove access to a city or area.  As I said before this did absolutely nothing except make starter cities empty (which just scares away new players - where is everyone?).

Mortal Online has a fixed penalty alignment system (UO-based).  When you die red you lose X percent of your stats.  This does nothing to deter evil player killers because there are mechanics in place to very quickly regain your stats, so everyone is red with blue alts for city access.  Much like in DF1, alignment in Mortal is almost pointless. 

Life is Feudal has a relative penalty alignment system.  The more negative your alignment is, the harsher the stat penalty will be.  This is an alignment system with teeth, because gaining stats is much more difficult the higher your stats are and there is no easy mode way to regain those stats.  Player will think twice about random killing, or else they might as well completely reroll their character.  People who want to live a griefing lifestyle will be stuck with mediocre characters, or else they will have to be flawless in pvp. 

IMO none of these systems are good for DFUW because of the prowess system.  It is SO FUCKING BORING grinding PVE mobs.  If I lost stats, I would end up quitting (again) because of the sheer tedious nature of how you gain stats in the first place.   Making 500 pieces of shitty armor I will never use is no more fun than the PVE grind.  This is one of the biggest problem with DFUW prowess system...  it is easy to get burnt out unless you are 'special'.  

If DFUW implements an alignment system, it will have to be totally outside the box type of thinking, something that has never been done before.  I can think of ideas like this, but it would need to be implemented at release as part of the core design.

Invisible players used to happen all the time when the server had too many people in the same node.  Since this was small number of players, I suspect it was a hack.

AV is beginning alignment discussions in the MVP forum.  I have my own ideas on this but wanted to give you guys the opportunity to get a discussion going in which I can give voice to a consensus opinion on the matter.

 

Pointless.

An alignment system only has meaning if there is a harsh penalty for being evil.  This is implemented in the form of stat/skill penalties in games that take alignment seriously.  This will not work with DFUW's prowess system as it would erase people's hard earned prowess.

To recap today's lol-event over at the Mortal forums, a great poll was posted asking if the community wanted SV to institute a wall shame system similar to Darkfall's unholy banhammer - especially after the latest duping event.

The poll was gaining steam, and got to about 40 votes for, only 5 against before GM Discord deleted the entire thing.

The main dev then responded in this thread:

As you can see from the replies - the dev has little ground to stand on.  Every reason he gave for not implementing the wall of shame was complete and utter nonsense.  It seems the GM's really are incompetent and lazy.

A smart business would see this kind of community demand for transparency as an opportunity to deliver and impress with relatively little work...  SV just gets defensive, deletes threads, and ruins an opportunity to show the community it is listening.

ps.  You see diphling?  This is why we take any serious discussion about SV/Mortal to MMORPG where we don't get arbitrarily censored.

I can't discuss because of NDA, but you can get into the alpha and beta tests for $10 and it's totally worth it.  

1.  NDA's are a stupid concept.  There is no valid reason that gameplay should not be disclosed to the public, unless the game company is trying to hide something from people who haven't bought the game.  

2.  Donated to support the project... uninstalled after 1 hour play session.  That says it all.

 

Still waiting on Darkfall 2010.

AV never had an open policy on their forums - they have always been fascist jerks.  You probably just never realized it until you rocked the boat.

If they do implement open classes, that might be worth checking out.  But honestly... a year after release and they still coudln't even finish their themepark classes -> how long do you think it will take for them to do sandbox classes?

FACT:  2 years ago AQ had a keep 20+ mil HP.

FACT:  When the keep HP changes went into effect, SV lowered the keep HP of every keep in game to reflect this change (again, 2 years ago).

You joined MMORPG to derail honest discussions as you are obviously way off topic in your posts.  The only way ANY guild got 26 mil HP is with a building bug that had to occur AFTER they had already fixed the problem.  SV had set a precedent by lowering keep HP in the past, and if they were honest and true to their words, they would have continued to lower keep HP of all bugged buildings.

Its that simple.

Your reading that as me saying I'm better is your own insecurity.  I never said one is better than the other, just stating facts as I observe them.  No one loses in most MMO's, and that's why 98% go for that themepark 'we all get a shiny' playstyle.

For the record, a hipster is someone who follows the latest trends... so it's people playing ESO and games like that - that are the hipsters.  People playing sandboxes are contrarians for the most part.

98% of gamers want to be entertained want to have some challenge and not have sections of their gated and inaccessible. Having only 2% of players ever see something is not a stat to be proud of its a reason people quit or never try your game.

You can capture starter cities in Mortal Online and eject the populace as criminals - only the capital is immune from capture.  All games have some kind of 'safe' area that I'm aware of or else new players could not start the game.

Yes themes are popular because everyone gets to see everything more or less.  The hardcore sandbox will always be unpopular to the mainstream (maybe H1Z1 will challenge that paradigm in May - we will see).  Most hardcores have been developed poorly, and SOE's contribution will be the first test of a megacorp's attempt at it.

Darkfall, Mortal Online, EVE, Perpetuum...   Seen many factions destroy their rivals.  That can only happen in games with hardcore rulesets, and that requires players who are willing to take risk.

98% of the player market do not want to risk their time investment, gear, built up structures, etc.  If you haven't been playing these games with hardcore rulesets, then you are part of the 98%.  "Everyone gets a ribbon, and no one loses" is the mantra of the modern gamer.  For some of us, a victory with no chance of losing everything, is utterly unrewarding.

There won't be PVE in the classic sense.  There is a function for tracking wild animals.  You can build snares to capture creatures, and you will be able to hunt other normal creatures.  You can also domesticate and stable some of those creatures for farming purposes.

The main environmental concern I think will actually be preserving the environment vs. destroying it.  De-forestation could actually be a problem.  There will be groups actively chopping everything down, and other groups (hopefully) acting as rangers protecting the world.   Hopefully the players do a better job in game than we do in real life.

 

Just a small preview of UI customization in LiF.  They did it right in this game...  everything in the UI can be moved where you want it, and resized how you want it.  

Here is a quick pic of the default UI placement.  Big pink bar is health, big green bar is stamina, small empty bar is alignment, small (mostly) full bar is hunger, standard hotkey bar in the middle bottom, multi-tab chat window to the right bottom.  I think the doll icon shows wounds/health, but I haven't been beaten up yet.  There are also a few more UI windows that only pop up during use, but you can place those as well.

However you feel about the game, this dev team has put forward the most transparent pre-release (pre-alpha) environment I have ever seen in a game.

Just about every MMO dev team I've experienced had some kind of NDA they make you click through -> from multi-million dollar (supposed) triple-A game companies, to solo indy devs and everything in between.  (One cowardly game company I shall not name made you send them a drivers license or passport to get on their test server - shameful).

And then you have the LiF team:  "Fuck the NDA, post whatever you want, say whatever you want."  These guys have balls of steel.  I have never seen a dev team have so much confidence, even in pre-alpha state.  I've always asked myself about other companies - "Why did they make me sign an NDA?  What are they hiding?".  There is nothing being hidden here, despite a lot of bugs and core issues (to be expected in pre-alpha anyway).

The other piece of transparency I was impressed with is openly known player count:  When you log in the game you see exactly the total number of players logged into the global channel.  So many MMO's give bullshit numbers about how many people are playing their game, but never any concrete numbers of "X people are online right now".  There were over 90 players in the last pre-alpha session...  a number I think is encouraging for such an early stage of an indy project.  

I know you can name plenty of exceptions (X company didn't have an NDA, or X company shows you everyone logged in).  I'm not saying its never been done before.  But I am saying its the direction companies should be going in, and its a direction I respect.

This thread is made even funnier, because AQ back in the day built a keep using the auto-build to get over 20something mil HP back when it was in game.  The GM's later actually LOWERED the amount of HP down to the maximum legal amount.  So there is a precedent for lowering the keep HP to the accepted level.  The fact they aren't doing it is just more shady dealings to keep every sub they have.  If the GM's had any honor they would lower the keep HP to the legal limit like they did before.

To clarify some confusion about this, I did a lot of testing specifically with bows.  What I found is this:

If I had no target aggro'd then my arrow would go wherever I was aiming at.

If I had a target aggro'd and it was in bow range, my character automatically spun around when I turned around and faced the other way from the mob.  I could not miss.  I played the game and this happened.  I'm sure I will be able to replicate it in 2 weeks.

This is NOTHING like the other Elder scrolls games.  My complaint is that questing is poorly implemented compared to other titles, despite being a big budget title.  But even with predictable questing (and the ES games do have some cookie cutter quests along with more interesting ones) the combat in ESO is terrible so it makes the bad quests seem even worse.  You can't "miss" a class skill or a weapon skill if you are in range, and you can't miss a basic attack (tested with a bow) if your target is aggro'd.

Serious question.  I did maybe 50 quests this weekend, and every one was more or less the same:

1.  Go here, talk to this guy.

2. Go there, talk to this other guy.

3.  Go to the third spot and kill something for a shiny.

4.  Use the shiny to save the day, then go back and talk to that guy again.

It's all totally boring stuff that just feels like one chore after another.  The quest writing is REALLY bad.  Contrast this with other themeparks like 'The Secret World' which is a similar, but at least a lot of the quests had interesting puzzles or something to break the mould (and that game utterly failed).  ESO quests seem like they were written by 14 year olds, who were aiming at 10 year olds as their target audience.  No intelligence whatsoever.

I'm a huge fan of ES single player games, but this is _nothing_ like the sandbox feel of those games.  It doesn't help that combat is terrible:  you literally don't have to aim at anything.  If you point your target reticle 180 degrees opposite your enemy, your character will automatically turn around and never miss the target.

I can only imagine the kind of person who enjoys this type of progression as someone who has never played a themepark in their life.
