Considering all of the complaints and this is what they come up with.  Are they trying to drive away what few players they have left?

Really good article and when he wrote about class independence of role it started me thinking.  What about having each class be able to do all three roles of the triniity based on what skills are chosen.  For example as a priestess I can be a healer (healing and group buffs), a tank (self heals, magic armor) or a DPS (think water mage) OR go for the all-around soloer by picking a few skills from all three.  A rogue could be a corpsman for heals, assassin for DPS or a blade dancer (can pull agro and dodges attacks) as a tank or a cobonation of two or all three.

I've been reading the threads and two ideas seem to be very popular topics for conversation.

1)  The death of the Trinity (healer, DPS, tank)

2)  The diminishing element of multiple players in a multiplayer game.

I think a good example of this is SWTOR where because of your companions you can level from 1-50 without ever having to be in a group.  But with the Trinity, there was always grouping.  My priestess would duo with a warrior or a tank would have 1 or 2 DPSs and maybe a healer if doing a dungeon.  It struck me that maybe these are related.  I havn't played GW2 (because it is sold out) but it seems to me that as games move towards jack-of-all-trades instead of specialists that the gameplay will become more just ORPG.

Ditto what a lot of people said.

1)  The quests being almost exactly the same for all of the alts.  No race quests to break up the monotony.

2)  PvP.  I'm more of a PvE player but for me, there was no PvP. Instead it was just a bunch of mindless minigames.

3)  No engame.  Story over?  Time to make an alt.

Combine 2 and 3.  Could you imagine if Coruscant were an open world PvP for level 50s where you fought for control of the planet by controlling key points like the Jedi Temple and Senate Building?  And controlling a key point helped give your side advantages like Jedi Temple = +10% willpower.  And that is just off the top of my head and it's better than what BW came up with.

4)  The worlds were too big.  It took to long to get from one place to another considering it was not a sandbox and there really was no chance to explore.  If the game is going to be so linear, at least make it quick to get from one place to another.

5)  Classes seemed to not be specialized enough.  My Jedi Sage healer?  Other classes make better healers.  Juggernaut?  Just never seemed to work as a tank.  Sniper?  Actually pretty good at her job.  Ambush would result in a one shot kill for lower level.

6)  Races were disappointing.  Outfits were disappointing (no graphic reward for crits).  Social interaction is a joke.

What Bioware is doing now shows the inherent contradiction in SWTOR.  So much focus is put on the class storyline but most of the game is grinding the same quests alt after alt (because why wouldn't you play out all 8 storylines?), ridiculous PvP areas, solitary space missions  and flashpoints.  So is it a storyline based MMO or a glorified solofest?  If it is about storylines, then why not have race-based quests too?  Have your Twi'lek discover the truth about the forced migration.  Have your purebred Sith get involved with throwing off their human oppressors. Instead, BW is about adding more of what we don't want in the game.

I agree with the OP that there was just a feeling that things didn't fit.  First of all, the storyline makes more sense if you put it 200 years AFTER Star Wars and not before as everyone is running around trying to fill the Jedi/Sith vacuum left after ROTJ.   Second, why doesn't the special armor (blue and purple) look different?  I know it is such a minor point but other games let you show off your crit gear.  The spaceships were a little too big.  The game was just off.

But what ultimately got me was the repetiveness of the quests if you play more than one class. It is such a great storyline that I built all 8 classes but I'm tired of doing the same 95% of the game to get to the storyline.

Yes the digital (download) version.  You get this when you try to buy it.

Sorry! Guild Wars 2 is currently soldout.

To ensure the highest quality service we have temporarily limited the number of copies of Guild Wars 2.

As more capacity becomes available, we will make Guild Wars 2 available for sale again.

In the meantime, we encourage you to visit our retail partners , who may still have copies available.

Looks like I won't be playing for . . .  well your guess is as good as mine.

Any of you that have read my posts know that I bemoan the loss of the professional healer.  I will probably get the game eventually to see if I can make the transition from "healer" to "support".  Probably as a water elementist.  I'd know mace/focus guardian is supposed to be good as well but I'd have to get into the mindset of a paladiness instead of sword and shield tank.

Having one name unique over all servers is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of in an MMO.

Are you serious?  So if someone chose "Ellie" on one server it is unavailable on ALL the servers?

The problem you have with group oriented MMOs would be what do you do if no one is on?  There were many time I had to run around as the squishy healer unable to finish a quest because no one was around.  OK, so now you make the characters multipurpose enough to do a little of everything so now loners go out and do the quests alone.  So now you make it harder to solo with harder mobs or requiring a party of 2+ to finish a quest and we're right back where I started with what do you do if no one is around?

You play a solo game not an MMO.

Still doesn't answer the question.  In a group oriented MMO, what do you do if there's no one around to group with?

GW2 has tried to move the MMO to the next level.  No monthly fees, dynamic character building, great graphics, established IP, complete story lines, etc.  Now other MMOs have done this before - like Rift and the three soul trees to build your character or the graphics in SWTOR - but I feel that people feel that it is GW2 that brings it all together.  So if GW2 fails, the gamemakers will start questioning if there in an inherent flaw in the entilre MMO design paradigm that cannot be fixed just with tweeking the present system.

So is it more of an awesome in group but sucks as solo profession?

I think rumors of the trinity's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

 Yeah

It isn't as prevalent as in other games but it is still present in this game. Hell, I had to switch to water for healing purposes in AC last night for the group I was in.

And this was exactly my point.  I think it's great that everyone can be multipurpose but I would still like to have the option of a build of a Guardian that is "Beat on me while my party crushes you." or a Water Elementist that stands back and spams heals during dungeons or bosses.

Professional healer here.

I favor getting rid of the trinity because I was tired of being the squishy priestess that couldn't solo .  The problem I have with the trend to get rid of the pure healer build to switch to.  I haven't played GW2 yet so maybe the Guardian or water Elementist is a pure heal build but in this day as we move to multi-tasking characters who heal themselves I hope we san save a build or 2 for the pure healer to handle the tough situations.

I gotta agree with Zylaxx.  I've had the most fun playing the MMOs where a lot of the time was spend on class and race quests.  Now-a-days it's almost a waste to play more than one character as 95+% of the game are the exact same quests.  It's like getting a PS3 game and playing it over and over with slightly different strategies.  Having a good guild with socializing and an offbeat sense of humor makes it fun to play, but it doesn't really change the gameplay at all.

SWTOR is a great example, play as a Chiss Bounty Hunter and a Human Sith Warrior and how much of the gameplay itself is different?  Maybe 10% of the quests if that?  Now add PvP and the percentage of time playing a different game is small.  Guess what game I don't play anymore.

I played with a friend during beta and I can tell you why I never got the game.

1)  Graphics.  Had the faint hint of unreality and looked 2-3 years out of date.  All of the characters looked like they were zonked out on prozac.  Unfocused stare.  Weaving side-to-side.  Think uncanny valley.  Made it really hard to watch the cutscenes.

2)  Gameplay.  Seemed like a lot of grinding of mobs and IMO some mobs were beyond the reasonable level of the grinder.

3)  Story.  Seemed really good.  I can't say I really got into it but I think that was more of playing the beta rather than a bad story.  Definately not a reason I didn't play the game.

GW2 just came out and it'll cost me close to $60 to see what it is like.  I had a friend that did TSW beta so I could see that I wouldn't like it which saved me some money.  My question is why don't game companies have a trial (like through level 10) that you could play without having to buy the game.  I know they make a lot on people that spend the $ on hype and then never play, but how many potential players are turned off by spending so much money on a game that they have no clue if they will like and end up never buying it?

Is it unreasonable to expect MMORPGs to give us a sample before spending so much on a game?

Apparently, I am one of a dying breed in MMORPGs, that of a full-time healer.  I'm planning on playing GW2 but it seems that there is no pure healer.   From the description, a necromancer may be clase but it is so hard to tell.  I tried SWTOR and there are a few classes that can do some healing, but I'm talking someone who can buff her party, heal, cure, etc.

Knowing all that, what would be a good class to play to be a healer?

I saw a quick blurb that any character can do healing and looking at the classes, I didn't see a pure healer (monk), Those of you that have played the beta, what role is there for someone that wants to be a pure healer?
