This. There is no meat to this game as of now.

The combat is fun and the gliding is fun but there are hardly any quests, areas or any other reason why to PvE. The PvP is not bad but with F2P games like League of Legends and TF2 this really can't compete.

hehe okay sure and McDonalds makes the best hamburgers too.  Parts of GW2 were good but to many game breaking design decisions to make this game feel like anything close to a gameworld.  Its a decent multiplayer game though.

Okay, please point to another themepark MMO that feels more like a "gameworld". Seriously please, because I sure can't.

The immersion factor in GW2 is bigger than any themepark MMO to date and even most sandbox ones too, simply because of the detail that has been put into everything from a stream's trickle to the inscriptions on NPC tombstones to weather naffecting mob spawns.

If you don't see it then you are just not paying close enough attention. Just a small anecdote to illustrate:

I was killing elementals when I noticed that some veterans were dropping green-quality trophies worth a few silver each. I was on my way to vendoring them when I bumped into some interactable boiling lava; next thing I know my hearts had been thrown in the lava and a Champion Elemental burst out and started a group event. I called out to the zone and 3 other players ended up helping me beat this champion which I had basically summoned unknowingly, it was awesome.

This was followed by an event to protect an Asuran krewe while they simultaniously operated three lasers to stabilize a volcano, which actually caused a Champion Destroyer to emerge from the lava that gathered about 15 players total. The whole series of events and real NPC actions made the world feel alive.

That's why Ascended gear was added. You already feel de-motivated by the grind to Ascended gear, imagine how you would feel if you only had Legendaries to go after now?

In addition, that's why Anet is adding systems like the Laurels, in order to facilitate that grind or at the least lower the entry barrier.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you having +50 stats at lv80 does nothing to improve your factions chance of winning. WvW relies A LOT more on communication and tactics than it does on stats or even individual player skill.

Anyone that complains about Ascended gear being more powerful is just looking for an excuse to blame their failures on.

This. Anyone talking about Best In Slot in GW2 has no clue whatsoever. Stats are a non-factor once you have Rare quality items or higher for 95% of content. That other 5% just requires exotics which are darn easy to get.

 

Well first of all, the Ascended gear is a non-issue because it was stated that this is a one time thing done to add another stepping stone in between the already existing item qualities. This is a whole new item quality, not your regular new item "tier" that you find in other MMOs.

Secondly, yes it IS a huge effort to obtain the best looking and most coveted weapons in the game. What on earth did you expect? 

There is no grind necessary what so ever to partake in any of the content in the game. You progress quickly with natural playstyle and only need to grind to obtain the best looking items.

I started playing again a few days ago after about a month break.

Kept bumping into people in a lv 55 zone as well as in a starting zone, so it looks like it's doing alright, at least to me.

Just look around, many are still around and they are jaded as f*ck. Its funny too, because many of them feel ripped off even though the red flags were up since beta; they really have only themselves to blame for buying the hype with nothing but the developer's promises.

 

Anyway, it's clear now that EA was set on charging for this all along. The "we may not charge" was basically just them covering their butts in case the survey results were unfavourable.

The open world PvE IS very easy because it's meant to be completed by everyone, including little kids. However, try the dungeons before passing final judgement; they are some of the hardest PvE content I've played. 

 

However, If you already have 2 Lvl35+ characters in one day of playing you are focusing WAAAY too much on leveling. I can guarantee you are missing a TON of interesting events, locales, and lore in all of the zones you have played through.

 

I'm serious, going into a play sessions thinking "Oh I'm gonna get to X level" is the absolute worst thing you can do for your enjoyment of GW2. Just let yourself get immersed in the world and lore because that is one thing that GW2 does better than any other MMO in the market, period. From inscriptions on tombs, to finding hidden lairs and tresures, to seeing the beautiful art and sounds of the environment, the zones in GW2 actually feel like a world in motion.

 

P.S. Although the game doesn't force you to, it kind of expects you to partake in many aspects of gameplay including DE's, personal story, dungeons, crafting, exploration, WvW and sPvP. Doing only one of these exclusively WILL result in boredom because they weren't really designed for that.

 

P.P.S. When doing events, LISTEN and FOLLOW NPCs. There is so much more going on with DE chains that people don't catch because they simply don't bother paying attention to the world itself but just focus on what the UI throws at them.

For example, in one DE you have to gather mushrooms for an NPC's potion. Pretty standard and boring right? Wrong! If you follow this DE chain to it's completion AND stick around for a little bit AFTER the chain is done, you will see the NPC have a full conversation with his dead kin not only revealing lore and history of that cave but also serving as surprisingly touching moment. Had I simply jsut read the DE pop and ran off as soon as it was done I would not have experienced any of this.

I think that's because the game makes it really easy to walk away and not feel punished.

However, you have to think of the other side of the coin: the game also makes it really easy to come back and not feel left behind. I think we'll see a lot more returning players in GW2 over time than in other MMO's; I have personally not gone back to some MMOs even though I've wanted to simply because it felt like I would have to invest so much just to be up to par with everyone else.

The fact that GW2 doesn't have a subscription combined with its low return barrier almost ensures that the game will have a working population for many years to come. Just look at GW1, it's more or less dead now a days but that game had a good population for 3-4 years even though it was a niche game; GW2 has a lot more mass appeal than GW1.

While anecdotes are not proof, more populous starting areas correlate with an influx of new players. If it was just the same people logging in more you would see a balanced increase across all zones, not a significant increase in the starter zones compared to the others.

The confusion stems from the fact that they are alluding that the game is worth $30 but they only charge $15. It's just bad marketing, as they don't make the "deal" clear enough.

You pay the top dollar number not the "value" one.

That's why the $15 package is "valued" at $30, the $25 is "valued" at $45 (30 + 15), and so forth. There is no Stronghold Servers included in any of the packages.

 

Long story short, Hammerpoint can't even tell potential customers their game's price without confusing the flock out of them.

That is very much true. However, those types of players (i.e. the kind that doesn't care about a company's behaviour/direction) do not stick around for a very long time, which is exactly the opposite of what an MMO looks for in their playerbase.

The key word in your sentence is "new": Those players will not be new forever, and at some point they will either invest themselves in the game or leave. Guess which of those two outcomes bad PR promotes?

Not only that but they are still selling the Companion Unify Color feature even though they know it is non-functional at the moment. Not even a warning.

You are mistaken, that's exactly why they ban you. Companies don't like it when customers get their banks to force a backcharge and often ban accounts that do that. That is what the OP is referring to.

This. I have no problem with F2P/Freemium games, but their monetization scheme has to make sense.

Right now, there is almost nothing in the CM that is enticing to a thinking customer who actually considers price vs. value before throwing money at the screen. Not only does this not help keep F2P players, but it also drives subbed players who feel slighted at the fact that they have received almost none of the free content they where promised (Just take a look at their forums).

Everything in the CM, from gambling packs to $18 mounts that are not account-wide to charging subbed players $10 for a content update, just screams "SHORT-TERM MONEY GRAB". EA clearly doesn't care about the long term health of the game, they just wanna try to recover their loses as soon as possible and that's it.

If we were to get actual sub numbers right now. I guarantee Rift would have more and wouldnt be surprised if LOTRO had about the same if not more. SWTOR sold 2 million copies at launch and was down to 500k subs at 6 months. After a year I would put SWTOR at maybe 200k subs, and a lot of f2p accounts. 6 months from now the f2p accounts wont be that many with how terrible of a f2p they offer and the subs will probably be around 125k. 

And hopefully the game shuts down a year from now so we can get the Star Wars MMO we deserve.

uhm, my facts came from EA's investor meetings where they have to give factual data on how successful their game properties are. So theres that.

P.S. Congrats on paying for an expansion that comes out in spring that was originally suppose to release around this time as a content update...for free.

 

Too bad their f2p has been a huge success! Please provide a link that says they are below 125k. I have never read any investor meeting stating anything below 500k. So how about that link? Oh wow god forbid things changed, they are adding more than just what your talking about. I know selective reading and missed the part of "more information coming". Ill pay $10 to play new content on a game i enjoy. I guess im fortunate to have a job where I dont need to pout about ten bucks.

Are you kiidding me? Their F2P has been heavily critiqued by gamers and suits alike across the board...

F2P has gotten an initial surge of non-paying members but that won't last long because their monetization scheme is a joke. Not only that but EA's sole focus on nickle-and-diming their remaining playerbase is actually driving subscribed members away from the game.

It's funny to see people defend EA when they charging $18 for PER CHARACTER holiday mount yet not even bother decorating the Fleets for Life Day. (Remember that they  are supposed to have a dedicated event team, something I doubt they still have at this point tbh)

Never mind that they are now selling progression ship gear on the Cartel; while this might not be gamebreaking it goes explicitly against quotes by Jeff Hickman himself and sets a terrible precedent for future character gear.

 

P.S. You haven't just paid  $10, you have to factor in the 3 paid months in which subscribers have gotten almost nothing in terms of content.

I do not think GW2 is p2w, but there is some truth in Volgore's statement. The way the game intentionally keeps players broke, and that the majority of crafting is worthless, makes the cash shop all too enticing for my taste. 

 I still don't seem to understand how people are having gold issues? I play normally and always end up with more gold than I logged in with...

What is it these people are doing? Maybe rez-running through dungeons non-stop?
