By raw performance, the video card is a lot faster than the Intel HD 3000 graphics that is listed in the minimum system requirements, and in the ballpark of the other cards listed.  I'm guessing that ArenaNet listed the Intel graphics after doing a bunch of testing for that particular GPU to see if they could get it to run by disabling a bunch of stuff.  The ATI and Nvidia cards listed are much faster, and I'm guessing that ArenaNet figured, anything about this fast should run without us having to test it.

That's a strange system, though.  The processor was off the market before the video card launched, and I don't think I've ever seen a GeForce GT 430 at a price where it made sense to buy new apart from the occasional huge rebate (pay way too much now and get 60% of the money back when the rebate arrives).  It's too slow to be a budget gaming card (about on par with Radeon HD 6550D integrated graphics) and too expensive to be a "it displays the desktop cheaply" card.

Hah, yes your right. I got it for about 90 bucks at Best Buy this weekend. My fan on my old graphics card crapped out so I was forced to replace it. I just started my new job and have yet to get my first check so I went with something cheap. (Old graphics card had 1 ram of ddr3 and this one has 2 rams of ddr3.) My old card was a 9800 GT. I was suprised to see how small the newer card is than the older one to tell you the truth. I'm still learning about alot of this stuff. Like, I want to upgrade my OS but have never done it so I'm a bit scared that I'd mess something up. Also a little intimidated to upgrade my processor as I have never done that either. Only parts I've ever really upgraded myself are RAM, GPU, Optical Drive and PSU.

In that case, you should understand that your new card is a large downgrade from your old one.  Not being able to do very much means not putting out very much heat, and that's what lets them make it small.  $90 is way, way too much to pay for that card.  Look here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127602

$20 after rebate.  And if not for the rebate, $50 is still too much to pay for the card.  But I guess you expected to massively overpay, since you went to Best Buy.

I don't know if you can return hardware to Best Buy, but even if you have to pay a 20% restocking fee or some such, you'd come out way ahead to do that and spend the remaining money on a much faster card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102934

That's about as low end as you can go and call it a budget "gaming" card.  Even that would be something of a downgrade from your old card.  And, of course, there are faster cards if you're willing to spend more.

Or it might be better to just replace the system outright soon.

actually quizz. that is not the new card i have. this is the new card. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/PNY+-+GeForce+GT+430+2GB+DDR3+PCI+Express+2.0+Graphics+Card/4809965.p?id=1218533330989&skuId=4809965

Which I dont understand why they both have the same name. But ya. this is the card I have. The old one had 1 gig of ddr3. THIS ONE HERE has 2 gigs of DDR3. :) Still alot smaller though. But from my understanding this one here is an upgrade. Correct me if I am wrong though because you do know alot more about this stuff than I do.

Okay, so they're not exactly the same card.  The one I linked is faster, due to a higher core clock speed (730 MHz versus 700 MHz) and a higher memory clock speed (667 MHz versus 535 MHz).  I'd also trust MSI more than PNY on build quality, but that's not likely to be a meaningful difference--and MSI surely didn't put the same degree of care into their low end cards as they do their flagships.  Best Buy doesn't list the specs, but New Egg does:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133432

I know you're looking at video memory.  But what you don't realize is that that that doesn't matter.  If anything, 1 GB is better than 2 GB for that card.  1 GB would save a bit on power consumption, and there's no performance difference.

Video memory, like system memory, is a case of, either you have enough or you don't.  If you have enough, then it doesn't matter if you have a little more than you need or if you have ten times as much as you need.  If you don't have enough, then you have to borrow system memory and pass everything through the PCI Express bus and the whole thing chokes.  Actually, that particular card has little enough memory bandwidth that passing everything through a PCI Express bus wouldn't be a big bandwidth bottleneck, though the latency would be problematic.  But a gaming card would have a lot more memory bandwidth, and having to squeeze everything into a PCI Express bus would kill performance.

So how much do you need?  It depends on the game and the graphical settings (especially monitor resolution).  But if 1 GB isn't enough for a given game at given settings, then there's no real hope that the GPU would be able to produce playable frame rates with 2 GB, either.  If you have a big enough monitor (2560x1600 would do it; 1920x1080 is only big enough for a handful of games), then maybe you'll be able to find particular games and particular settings at which the card you linked can do 5 frames per second, and the one I linked can only do 2.  But does that difference really matter?  The game would be unplayable either way.  Turn settings down far enough to make the game playable and memory capacity won't matter--and the card I linked will win because of the higher clock speeds.

But let's dig into the specs that matter:

Number of shaders:

GeForce 9800 GT:  112

Radeon HD 6570:  480

GeForce GT 430:  96

The shaders are different and not entirely comparable, so a 6570 doesn't necessarily have more shader power than a 9800 GT.  But they're both way ahead of the GT 430.

Number of TMUs:

GeForce 9800 GT:  56

Radeon HD 6570:  20

GeForce GT 430:  16

You could argue here that the 9800 GT had more TMUs than it could put to good use.  But the GT 430 still loses and badly.

Number of ROPs:

GeForce 9800 GT:  16

Radeon HD 6570:  8

GeForce GT 430:  4

Number of memory channels:

GeForce 9800 GT:  4

Radeon HD 6570:  2

GeForce GT 430:  1

The GeForce 9800 GT probably also had more memory bandwidth than it could put to good use.  But again, the GT 430 loses to both of the other cards, and badly.

Both AMD and Nvidia typically make 3-4 GPU chips in a generation.  For years, it ranged from a low end chip that will be fine for nearly everything except gaming (display the desktop, e-mail, web browsers, videos, etc.) up to a high end chip that is meant for gaming.  Now that AMD has integrated graphics that outperform the traditional low end GPU chip, neither Nvidia nor AMD are bothering to make one this generation.

If gaming is your intended purpose, then you don't want the low end card.  Typically, it will more or less run games.  But it will offer performance that trails way behind (at best 1/2, and often more like 1/3 or 1/4) the next chip up, which is the budget gaming card chip.  For AMD, the last several generations of this have been Radeon HD 3450, Radeon HD 4350/4550, Radeon HD 5450, and Radeon HD 6450.  For Nvidia, the last several generations have been GeForce 9400 GT, GeForce G 210/310, GeForce GT 430/440, and GeForce GT 520.

So why does the card you even bought exist in the first place?  Because people like you who will buy something at random without knowing better can often be convinced to buy it--and at exorbitant prices, which allows for the fat profit margin that stores like Best Buy are looking for.  It's easy to see that 2 GB of video memory is more than 1 GB, and harder to explain why Turks is a lot better than Caicos, or why GF116 is a lot better than GF119.

If people don't realize that for low end cards, 2 GB wired into the card isn't any better than 1 GB wired in plus another 1 GB duct taped to the side, well, Best Buy doesn't care about that.  They just want your money, so they offer what they think clueless customers can be convinced to overpay for.  That's Best Buy's target market, after all, as they know that they'll rarely see people who know much about computers in their store.  Such people shop elsewhere (New Egg, Amazon, Micro Center, etc.), at places where you can get better hardware for cheaper than Best Buy.

ya, looks like I have alot to learn. Do you have any links you could give me that could teach me the more in depth things when it comes to video cards, processors and ram? That way I dont get suckered into anything. I still have my receipt from best buy so, while i cant get my money back, maybe I could put that 90 bucks towards something worthwhile? Or maybe I should just get a new rig. I could probably spend around 700 bucks on a new rig. i wouldnt need a new monitor or anything. My main goal is to game. It doesnt have to be the best system in the world but I would like it to run most mmos on near max settings with a good frame rate. If you could help me out in anyway here Quizzical, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Well, I'm off to work. I'll respond back when I get on. Thanks in advance for the info Quiz, much respect.

How well does it scale to more processor cores?  I have no idea.  I'd expect it to scale at least as well as GW1, but GW1 was so light on processor usage that it's hard to test.

Hey Quizz. :). Well, I have 3 gigs of ram. I'll probably upgrade this but first I'd like to upgrade to a 64 bit operating system so I can utilize more than 4 if I do upgrade. Also my graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce GT 430.

The minimum requirements for gw2 are listed as Intel® Core™ 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, Core i3, AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 or better under the processor section as of now. I have an Amd Phenom 9500 QuadCore 2.2 GHz. I was wondering if after the game is optimized, if this would be a good enough processor to run it.

Am I the only one who experienced this during the beta weekend?

My computer is quite high end and is capable of playing every other game on full quality with a high framerate, yet the GW2 beta was nearly unplayable in certain areas.

Before someone says it is the fault of my computer not being up to spec... let me give you some details on my hardware:

- AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor

- 16 GB of DD3 RAM

- Nvidia Geforce GTX 580 with 3GB video RAM

Like I said above, I can play every other game on full quality with a great framerate. I realize GW2 is still in beta and they probably haven't done all of their optimizations yet, but I found it quite disturbing that the performance was so bad at this stage. I'm just wondering if other people had this problem as well?

I experienced the same. So dissapointed.

I will be on Sorrows Furnace :P
So, what server is everyone rolling on. Just making this to pass the time till BETA!!!!!
So, I actually have 6 tera online codes like this. I will be playing GW2 all weekend but ill give the codes away no problem. Just write me a private message telling me why you need a code and I'll award the 6 that I feel deserve it most with a code :). You have till midnight central time tonight. Let the games begin. :)

REALLY? wow, found my first gripe with the game. I'll call it BULLSHIT lol. I can remap my bindings to a degree but I would have liked to bring the f-1 through f-4 abilities to shift 1-4 perhaps. also, I see on the defaul controls they have Q and E as strafe. On every game I immediately change this to A and D and simply do without turning with keybinds and I let my mouse do that. Does anyone know if this will effect my ability to dodge to the left and the right?

yes you can remap the keybinds but there aren't modifiers yet

What is a modifier?

Does anyone know if you have the ability to remap keys for Guild Wars 2? I've seen the standard default binds and the way they are set it isn't nearly what I'm sure most of us are used to.

I'm opening because I have the email but my fiance still does not. I was wondering if we need to get in touch with arena net about this. Thanks.

as far as i can tell it is unable to run gw2 or at least very well.... i want it to run smooth as silk lol.....

atm i have 700 saved up for a new pc but i may save up for another month or 2 to have a total of 1300$ for a new comp. im not sure if im willing to go that high for a new pc yet... wife says no....but my heart says YES!

honestly if you do a cheap graphics card upgrade you should be fine. arena net isnt making the game to horrid with specs.

Just sitting here with the client open listening to the music. Absolutely breathtaking. What do you guys think of the music?

Without having played gw2 and only seeing the few gameplay videos from the media beta i was recently turned on to gw2 only in the past month or two.

after being one of the wounded victims of Swtor and thinking for a few months that i would not have an mmo to enjoy for quite sometime gw2 saved me.

the moment i knew for sure gw2 would be my future long term mmo was about 2 hours ago when i completely deleted WoW off of my pc.

wow has not been deleted off my hardrive in over 5 years.

lol, good that you found a new home but it doesnt even have a release date yet. a little preemptive maybe? what will you play in the mean time? lol

Or you NEED to pay attention. It has been stated several times that the emails are being sent in waves.

so the link posted in these forums is the same as the link from arena net correct? hmm, so you shouldnt get an error message should you. mines not done yet just dont want to download it for nothing.
