Investigation missions.. well to broaden the idea, I would call it hidden opportunities. That is opportunities that needs to be discovered or unlocked by the players.

Example: A player finds a hidden sword in a stone well hidden deep in a dungeon, it is missing a hilt, but there is no indication that it can be interacted with.. to some it is just world props, to the curious it has meaning. Another player finds a golden hilt of unknown origin by a random drop of a gnoll.. to some just junk or vender fodder, to the curious it might hold value. The two combined makes a hidden opportunity [insert whatever combining the sword with its hilt will do].

Example: A players finds part of a message in blood in a prison cell, another part in a book in the library, and only by being on good terms with the local [insert whatever] will the npc tell you the last clue, which the curious player can combine to a message "By the old oak, ten paces north, my true love lies".

And so on. The important thing is that it brings the player in control of their adventures. It brings chance and excitement and players feel special for finding out things for themselves. The environment will feel like a world full of magic and opportunities, and combined with lore, create a meaningful game experience.

The player has freedom and controls their stories, instead of getting content stuffed down their throat themepark style as stories and questing on rails. You could argue it is just hidden stories, but just that fact that it takes efford to find it or unlock it, combined with the fact that such stories are much more subtle by nature - It makes all the difference between pointless grind and a meaningful player experience.

Everquest for example was stuffed full of these kind of things. If you want a living breathing world, these "hidden opportunities" are in my opinion a cornerstone in a rpg world - formerly known as a mmorpg. So EqNext show us your true nature, what are you ? Story driven Themepark or Freedom driven Sandboxish.

---

So how can games achieve this without wasting all their resources on things only 50% of the players might discover ? Well, when the whole game is not story driven with cutscenes, voice dialogue, specially designed areas etc, it opens up alot of resources. It is about creating gameplay instead of stories really, and the hidden adventure possibilities (I am avoiding the word stories) are much simpler mechanics to make and a integrated part of the world.

Animating the hilt-goes-onto-sword with sound effects etc, are not necessary, use the players imagination instead and gain endless untold stories for free, just put the tools into the players head and stuff will happen on its own.

I LOVE the sword-hilt idea! :D

One thing I would like to hear more about..

Can we get a sneak peek of the new site? And can you tell us what the process is like for you and your staff?

Even screenshots or stills of the new design would be awesome!

As a contributor to the site (The guy from the Philippines), I concur. Tease me some MMORPG.com 2015 site design goodness. :D

Good article, Victor, however Patch 2.4 WILL NOT be released around mid-October.  My reference, based on FFXIV forum excerpt from: Letter from the Producer LIVE Part XVII Q&A Summary (09/11/2014) [forum link]

"We're planning to begin releasing information on patch 2.4 around Tokyo Game Show," which is around October 17th, "...and we'll continue to release information from that point onward."

Again, the Producers are being mum on release date specifics for Patch 2.4. but they will begin releasing information around October 17th.

Thanks for the heads-up. This was written before that tidbit of info came out, so I appreciate the help collating the info. :)

I don't necessarily want to be the guy who comes in and immediately starts defending an investment in Landmark, but...

It has been six months since we've had a crack at the alpha and in that time an enormous amount of features and technology have been implemented in the game. Some of that technology, like water or caves, required original R&D at SOE to implement. If your viewpoint is purely "what did I get out of it", then I think you could easily look at past Blueprints (if only they existed) and see that you got a lot of bang for your 20 bucks.

But the real value in the Founder's packs for Landmark come from not features delivered but rather through the opportunity to have your voice heard - to be a "dev". I have seen countless suggestions implemented, feedback heard, and bugs quashed thanks to forum posts and tweets. Though your mileage may vary in other games, I really feel like the devs ARE listening in Landmark and your 20 bucks bought you that too if you took advantage of it.

Hey there folks,

Victor here. It's 5:40 am and I'm nearly reaching 24 hours awake doing a bunch of stuff, but I saw the comments here and I wanted to chime in.

I've read all the comments so far, and I can see where the folks here are coming from. I'll state plainly where I'm coming from though.

I maintain the Landmark/EQ Next column and the FFXIV ones because I enjoy both games, but hop around a lot into other games that catch my fancy. This game hopping plays a part in my mindset when it comes to thinking about the updates of a game.

When I think of an update to a game, my mindset is that an update is a "something new to do" update rather than a "something nice to have" update. When MMOs, whether it be FFXIV or WoW, come out with updates, it's the "something new to do" type.

Right now, since there's no EQN alpha, I'm playing Landmark for short bursts. Building and destroying, however, can get tiring if you're a certain subset of gamer (which I am). Landmark updates bring "something nice to have" but the main actions are the same (with the exception of the PVP update which gave something new to do, and also formally altered some of the ways people might approach bulding).

I can understand that some are upset with my opinion, but trust that I have love for Landmark and EQN. I'm not a forum reader per se (more of a Reddit lurker on both EQN and Landmark when I'm not writing news), but I watch the Landmark Live episodes and also double check my twitch viewing to make sure I get the gist of certain information bits.

That said, please do note that what I said was that I'm one of those who happens to be "impatient with Landmark and Everquest Next and wants more than what’s being offered." I do recognize that the game is immeasurably complex and beyond my understanding (The tech discussions are tough to follow sometimes), but I suppose I want to build AND fight AND quest AND do other activities.

Landmark doesn't have all those other bits yet... which is what drives me to doubt my spending at times.

Anyway. Post is too long. Apologies.

Great article! I never got into the beastman quest chains, I am still trying to finish up the second coil and work on my animus weapon, but this writeup makes me want to try them out for the story.

The other beast tribes are combat based, so the Ixali are fun for a change of pace.

If you're tired of working on your animus weapon, pick one of them, crafting or combat, and just run with it! :D

There was some really great stuff in this most recent update. Though, do yourself a favor and ignore the gear treadmill the game tries to funnel you into.

I spend my time in game gathering, crafting, gardening, chocoboing, and playing with our house, and I'm quite happy with the game right now.

I know exactly how you feel. I'm more interested in doing quests for the story and leveling new character classes to help others run content.

Color system in the story above is not entirely correct, you can make your Chocobo a whole variety of colors on the RGB system not just the 6 or so the story mentioned.

Here is the running list that the community has found so far

THANKS! I found out about the list a bit later after I sent the article in. Was waiting for it to go live so I could note it.

I appreciate the help!

A mobile app with the Tales of the Lusty Argonian Maid?! YES PLEASE!

Vanguard ought to be added in a future installment of this.

And now I'm sad. :(

wow that quest is awesome, and from the looks of it... it doesnt look like its going away either ... theres more to come, or at least i hope so.

aslo, just reading this made me resub to ff, i really hope there are some other quests like this one.

i quit at, maybe 25ish or so, but while most quests werent that boring, they werent anything special either. Sure, main story was nice and relatively interesting but not interesting enough to warrant playing through tons of side quests and leaves (laves? leves? forgot its name)... thingies.

and im really glad to see a quest of this quality in an mmo :P

From the looks of things, this may have been a long-term plan as part of further development to help create great stories for the Hard modes of some of the dungeons.

There are a ton of little things like this in the game, but the game won't come out and say it. Sometimes, it's the quest text that'll do you in and make you love the world even more, and I encourage you to read everything and revisit cutscenes if you can. :)

Oh crud!

Sorry folks! I should have requested a spoiler tag before publishing. Been sick with stomach flu and have been mostly ignoring the world to try and rest my stomach.

I'll ask the editors to put in a spoiler notice in the morning!

Again, so sorry for the trouble.

Any more rumor on an XB1 version? Last I heard (during/right after E3) they were still in talks with Microsoft on making it happen. *crosses fingers*

Still in negotiations. Hope they work it out.

Microsoft has a good reason (Security) to keep their XBOX Live network closed, but hope they can find a solution to open it up a bit in a such a way that cross play for FFXIV becomes possible, without compromising security.

It can be done, but it will require some effort on both sides.

Back to the article. I am resubbed and greatly enjoying myself again.

Welcome back to the game!

I actually spend so much time farming materials crafting that I've left the story behind somewhat. This game brings out my hoarding instincts even for low-level materials!

FLAPPY BIRD! :D

It is likely situational. Chances are additional invites are given to people for use with guild members for organized play, or for streamers who might want to give fellow streamers keys and increase word-of-mouth growth of the game.

This is speculatory, of course!

Oh dear.... I would like this very much.
I'm going to like this on my mage LOL. :D

I went down to Home Depot and bought some resources to build my deck at home. Home Depot is so pay to win. People should really have to mine their own rock, crush it, mine the minerals for cement and mix their own concrete, grow their own trees, log them, mill them, smelt ore and forge their own nails, and also deal with the environmentalists when doing so. (that was just a joke)

If someone wants to pay SoE cash that's really their business. Sell your resources cheaper for something someone else wants and no one will buy Sony's resources.

No one in the thread has yet come up with an explanation why they shouldn't, let alone a good one.

This was my thinking too.

More to the point, the actual game still is being tweaked, with more gameplay mechanics being changed or added. I'd think some faith may be needed, but I don't see anyone really needing to sound the alarm in this case, unless there's a technical mishap that invalidates all sales.

Let me see if I understand this correctly; Sony wants players to build content, stories, whatever for other players and pay sony to do it?  So basically they will provide the engine and tools to do it and it's up to the players to provide the content.    Just how much does Sony expect one to pay to do the work for them?

You're using the wrong terminology and mindset, I'd think.

They're giving us tools to create our own virtual experiences in a world we can shape and influence with enough dedication and perseverance. It's a sandbox. You have a world (the box with sand), the tools to build stuff (equivalent to a pail and shovel in real-world thoughts), and you're tasked with just being free to have fun.

Right now, early access is there to help shape the game and iron out the kinks. I'm not completely sold on some games having early access, but it seems they have the long term goal of building EQnext on the foundation and tech of Landmark.

The game is functional enough to enjoy, but only if you have the mindset that you create the fun experiences you have in the game with the tools available. Eventually, there will be other systems in place such as content-driven stuff like questing and PVP, but the focus is enhancing the tools so that they can better understand the limits and possibilities of it, I'd think.

I jumped right in as I always do, had a polished granite 5 large block high tower built, took me 8 hours of game time, then discovered what template actual means and lost tower, but lesson learnt.

Its not that hard to stumble through learning by trail and error only, even  in Alpha 60% feature mode.

For an Alpha it is quite smooth, seen hellishly worse than this in so called Beta stage .

Just completed iron pick rare, dug a tunnel straight through a mountain and hollowed out a large square and timed how long it took.

Trail and error for me is more fun than documents, however I have a number of destroyed appliances at home that stand testament that its not always the best way LOL.

I would think Destroyed virtual mountains is safer than destroyed real appliances. :)
