Ya i really do agree with you.  I stopped playing because the UI was just so clunky slow and terrible.  It honestly felt like it was against you.  After the update it feels way more responsive and a lot more fluid.  Everything is just running great now even my fps have went up about 30.  Give the game a second shot, square knows the messed up at least they addmitted to it and are taking quick actions to fix what they can.

The UI was something I was used to unfortunately.  I LOVE the facelift they gave to it.  Just about everything is dragable, I noticed how the FPS jumped up tremendously and everything is running like a charm!  I think I may be falling in love with this game again.  I haven't found any of the new content, if they added (I didn't look at the patch notes), but everything is running much better than it was before and I am not wasting time scrolling through my inventory and waiting for gear to be equipped, then running through and readding commands.  It's a sign of redemption, I am awestruck that they came back strong with this patch.  All the talk they've been mentioning during the apologies is justified.  I thought they were full of it when they kept mentioning the updates after just about every question, but they have my attention now.  Thanks SE, wonderful patch!

Anyone who played this game in the last 3-4 years will know that there was only ever one viable spec in each tree for PvP and PvE. Come patch day and everyone would run to elitestjerks.com and get their new spec. So coming in here claiming that all of a sudden your "freedom of choice" is gone shows just how clueless you were as a player. So you want the choice to be a bad player and they took that away from you? poor you.

If they are really dumbing down the game, its so that people like you don't go cook up some stupid hybrid 50/50 tank/healer spec, get into to groups, wipe them and then blame others because you know your super awesome hybrid spec could not have gone wrong.

There are still people in this game who put one point in all three trees and progress horizontally while leveling. While this would be awesome if it were a single player game, so that your stupid decisions wouldn't affect others game-play. Constantly dieing to the first trash pack of a 5 man dungeon because your tank decided to spread his love in all the three talent trees and not specialize, really isn't fun(trust me i've been there, 60 odd "feral" druid with equal points in resto and balance)

thats funny you bring up ej since the reason that site exists is because there were so many different, evolving, and viable builds for multiple situations for every class. that site is there for discussing and testing different builds. but of course, players such as _______ go there and blindly choose one spec and proclaim everything else invalid.

anyone who has played this game as long as you said should know in fact there were tons of viable builds for each class for both pve and pvp.
your point about a feral druid putting points in resto and balance has nothing to do with poor talent tree design and everything to do with the fact some players just dont know wth theyre doing.

so yeah, go ahead and tell yourself that the game got better because its dumbed down even more. its not gonna fix an ignorant player no matter how simple you make it. you could have a class called "tank" and it had no talents and one button that you could faceroll and be able to tank every raid on hardmode and i guarantee you therell be some mouth breather that cries on the forums about it being too hard because they keep walking into walls.

That was awesome!  Well posted (^.^)

If all the tards who whine about how bad this game is got together and made an MMORPG together then...  well...  I guess it would never get released since nobody has enough money, creativity, talent, knowledge or even the capability to come out with something worth playing, if anything.  Just cast aside MMOs altogether if you're too upset with how this release turned out.  You'll spare yourself much social ostracism and dead weight imprints in your chair by doing so.  Get an education, learn how to do what engineers who make games do and help release something good enough to generate revenue.

You don't need to be an automotive engineer to enjoy driving a Ferrari and you can certainly tell when the car under you is actually a Pinto, even if it's painted red and has a prancing stallion emblazoned on the hood.  Likewise, you don't need to be a systems engineer to know when a game you paid for sucks ass, even if it has pretty cutscenes and a well-known IP logo emblazoned across the front of the box.

To propose that one needs to be a game designer to be able to recognize when a game is fun or not is absurd.

Nah, forget that post.  I wanted attention.  I guess I was thinking that if a player from every walk of life consolidated opinions, put them on paper and had a company create a game from the collection of ideas, people would still be unhappy.  Now that I read what I wrote, it came out wrong.  Amazing what a bad day at work will compell you to write.  No hate here, everything's gravy.  Not sure when the steering wheel moves to the front of the car on this game, but we'll see.

Of course people would be unhappy, my god if we lived in a world where everyone was in agreement of the superiority of a single source of entertainment, what a Brave New World that would be.

To propose that a random person on the internet can recognize when a game is fun or not for you is absurd.

Hey, lay off twit.  Why do you have to get all personal all of a sudden?  The internet is amazing, so many emotions get built up on it and worthless people migrating to thread after thread imposing their opinions on others like a darned Jehova's witness never ceases to entertain me.  Now run along to another thread and keep contradicting yourself like a good kid.

You calling people tards in the first post, and then calling me a twit is pretty personal.  What was personal about my reply to you?

It is amazing the "emotions" that people show on internet forums.  Let's see personal.... you've got some mouth on you where did you learn such strong words like "tard".  Pure class.

If I had a virtual trash compactor (or spam compactor), I want to name it after you Murugan.  Is that okay with you?  Tard is a forum friendly word since I can't use my sailor lingo without messy results from the moderators.  Do me a favor, close that Dictionary.com tab you're currently navigating and stop recycling the same biased posts.  I like the game, but gee-whiz, I'm not about to construct a theme park in the name of FFXIV when my shares increase in value tenfold.  Come on man, you got a wicked level with lots of pugilist ranks invested.  Can you do the community a favor and keep playing to further back your commentary up or is your character completely exhausted?  I think I first heard the word "tard" from WoW when people started calling Hunters the name Hun-tards.  Then I watched Idiocracy (which I believe to be more of a documentary of where the world is going towards rather than a comedy) and heard that Mac guy dressed like a doctor in the future saying it.  Speaking of the Mac guy, you kind of remind me of him.  It's one thing to like an MMORPG, but to be a brainless fanatic about it and recycling posts from thread to thread?  That's jumping the shark my friend.  When taking all the posts you've made slapping everyone with a negative view about the game down, one sentence comes to mind...

"I love lamp" -Steve Carell aka Brick Tamblin, the mentally retarded weatherman from "Anchorman"

Do you really love FFXIV or are you just saying it because you saw it?

As a player, you got a lot going for you, but as a forum user?...  Holy crap, I'm turning into YOU!  I think I'll go to bed now before this goes any further.  Peace friend

Wow your personal account of the etymology of the word "tard" is very interesting.  If I had a virtual dishwasher I'd name it in your honor!

I'm just saying that i love FFXIV because I saw it?  I'm not really playing the character in my signature, I just "saw it" whatever that means.

Oooh.. yeah you got me shaking in my cotton work boots with that one dude.  Ok, you can name a dishwasher after me.  You did your homework, good boy.  Logging now, you win, have fun.

It's never too late to start WoW, especially since you can max out in a week, yet endure ninjas taking stuff they can't even use just to watch you virtually fume.  It's probably a good time to start since Cataclysm is on it's way, and since they are redoing a vast majority of Azeroth, it would be good to experience the game from scratch with all the new details.  If I were still playing, I'd totally dig a Tauren Paladin when that expansion launches.

Not saying score is wrong but who in their right mind takes these scores serious ? These sites gave junk like oblivion 9.7 scores even though its dumbed down so trained monkeys can play it (or console morons, take a pick). If the sites havent been given bribes their score will be low ! Thats just the way things are. The score is just showing off that ign havent been given "enough" to grant it a higher score. Idiot sites like that just cant be taken serious. All that said, the game deserves less than 5, its just good old crap.

Considering that most people LOVED Oblivion, why would anyone take what YOU say seriously?

I didn't care much for Oblivion, either, but "junk" it most certainly wasn't.  It earned its high ratings.

When creating FFXIV, SE seemed to read forums like this one to see what hardcore old school gamers wanted.  Unfortunately, it seems they came to the absolutely WRONG conclusions as to why they wanted them.  In the end, they made a game with tons of built in tedium, with none of the payoff.

I love that word...

You are still doing it. Why do you care if someone is here posting negative things about FFXIV? is anyone asking you to stop praising the game? This is not  a fansite so your  argument 'don't post negative things about FFXIV' won't fly here.

i don't mind if people want to say soemthing positive, go ahead its a free internet forum. But yeah it bothers me when people like you try to be self appointed forum  mods.

I know..i know... you will come up with same bull***.  'if you hate the game why are you here.'

duh!

Keep on posting!  I'm so happy that FFXIV captivates everyone who posts here.  Like it or hate it, there are millions of things you can be doing instead, but you would rather post here.  ureshii desu!!! (^.^)  One way or another, everyone has some sort of love for this game.  You love it or you love to hate it, either way, this game has very popular forums on this website.  It's fun to think sometimes, but sometimes it hurts.  Ouch...

In case you didn't notice my signature. i am playing FFXIV since CE head start. Close to 100 hours now. But doesn't mean i am oblivious to its faults and drawbacks. You can be a fan and critic at same time. I don't believe in being close minded fanboy.

I neither love it or hate it. but then again i don't go around telling people to stop posting only because they dislike something i happen to like. Also, the same goes for you. there could be million of things you would be doing instead you are here.

See how condscending it sounds?

Fanboy?  I'm Funboy!  No wait, on this website I'm Rictof.  Sorry, almost got confused.

I was talking in general terms, didn't call you fanboy in person.. Also, nothing wrong with being a fanboy as long as you don't become a fanboy zombie.

Oh I know, I'm obviously not being serious.  I'm just messing around.  But if you want my honest opinion, I do believe the game suffers from a few flaws.  I won't deny that, but I can work around it.  But the Japanese community draws me to the game.  Nah, no zombie here, just having fun.  I don't care who wins the arguement, in the end it's just a bunch of pixels forming words on a screen in front of you.  Too bad it means a lot more to some people than it used to back when computers weren't private machines.

Yeah well, 90% of the comments in this review fall back to numerous statements about how they couldnt' figure it out, the game didnt' show them something. Its mostly assumptions built off lack of 'knowing' from the looks of it.

Seriously, I look at a review in the context of reliability of the author. Good or bad doesn't matter, a review is afterall one persons view of what they seen. I do however look poorly on any author who changes fact in order to further thier viewpoint. A lie is a lie is a lie to me, and if the author is willing to tell a lie, even one, in thier review well then I dont care what the rest says.

So far Gamespot had at least one in theirs, and this one has one as well.

"You shouldn’t have a hampered play experience just because no one breathes a word about your gear taking durability damage that you can’t even see unless you show it to a vendor who can repair it."

Just not accurate at all. You can see your durability on every piece of gear you use in this game. If the colored icon at the top with the mouseover tooltip doesn't get your attention enough you can manually look at each item seperately. The in game manual also covers this topic completely, lack of reading it when it is on EVERY crystal you touch is not the games fault. To say that you cann't even look at the damage on your own is 100% false, and I'm sorry, but anyone who has played this game for more than 2 hours knows this as true.

So where does that leave this review? Well read it again after you know the author is willing to 'bend' the facts in order to push thier viewpoint and see how it reads this time through. What I see is this...

"the fact that there’s no real strategy to the “hit-the-same-buttons-till-it-dies” combat is inescapable."

"And I guess since we’re on the subject of stupidity, now would be a good time to mention the atrocious interface. "

"But the sour cherry on top is that FFXIV’s interface lags something fierce."

"Other classes fall into the gathering or crafting category. Both spend their time doing ponderous mini-games that have the spark of potential, but just end up being annoying after about a dozen times."

"The maddening part is that the game never tells you, even in the goddamn manual, that these keys have this very important function."

"So you’ll have to check the objectives map, back out through some menus, bring the regular map up, and try to remember where you saw those objectives."

Fairly obvious, he got UI lag for whatever reason, hated it from there. No help, couldnt' figure it out, blamed the game for all his troubles. Hated the gathering, hated the crafting, thought it was all boring. Didnt' bother to try and understand the intracacies of the combat at all, just mashed one button and figured thats all there was to the entire game because he could survive a low level mob encounter that way. Oh yeah, and got lost a lot, lets not forget that one because its paramont to the overall review. No direction, no guidance, bad game.

"So for now the economy revolves around NPCs called retainers that each player can employ."

This last quote from the review I saved till last as I think it generally points out the reviewers lack of knowledge on how FFXIV is already evolving within the first two weeks after launch. Anyone who is playing this game, and has taken a small trip down Hawkers will know what I'm talking about. The economy doesn't happen in the retainer market wards at all. They are just there, thats it - hardly anyone I know even bothers to go there except to use thier retainer for a bank anymore.

No, the economy is in the places where the crafters craft. Standing in Hawkers, one can see the bustle of 100+ crafters making thier wares, a crowd of another 100+ browsing thier shop, yelling out for goods and services they need, the crafters are shouting out to the crowd with items they are selling. The economy in FFXIV is becoming what you would find in a real world market economy. A trip down to your local China Town market and you will see the same thing, French Quarter shops, Farmers Market, thats where FFXIV economy is.

This review has missed the head of the nail by miles from what is in the game right now. All they did in this review is tell how they didnt' have a good experience in thier short and limited test of it, thats all. And they went out of thier way, as most have so far, to leave out any good points, and bend and twist whatever they can to further thier view of how the feel it is. Its a 99% story of how they didnt like the interface and felt the entire game must be broken because of it lack of guidance.

Intracacies of combat!?  AHAHAHAHA.  The combat is a another wow clone hotbar system.  Cake to learn and mostly involves spamming the free attack button.  And the whole combat experience suffers through laggy responses and missed animations.  Intracate?  Give me a break!

Here's some of my KitKat.  Or did you prefer Twix?  No wait, two for me, none for you.  Clones are great, especially all the Arnold clones in Stolen Identity 3.  I'm glad you're laughing.  Laughing is good, especially for a game as intricately notorioius as this one.  This game is like a diety with worshippers and infidels in it's glory.  Thanks for laughing, I find it very healthy.

Yay!  Criticism!  My favorite part about the game.  Not only does it piss off people that cancel preorders, but it also continues to piss them off to this day!  SquareEnix, you are God.  I wish I could piss this many people off, but unfortunately I'm just me...

I played both in the past and had a good time playing them, but I just want to pick one. Final Fantasy XIV just completely crushed my soul with how bad it was, and I wanted to go back to something fun. My basic likes/dislikes about each game:

WoW:

Likes - Population, RANDOM DUNGEON FINDER (I swear, this is all I ever did)

Dislikes - Art style, never really got into the lore

EQ2:

Likes - Art style, lore, Norrath

Dislikes - Fairly low pop (played on Antonia Bayle, which had the highest pop)

Basically, I'm torn between a game that really interests me (EQ2) and one that always gives me something to do (WoW with that damned dungeon finder!).  I usually tend to play solo (Necro in EQ2 and Lock in WoW) unless I'm in a dungeon, so population is only really a factor in finding groups for dungeons. The last time I played EQ2 was about a year ago and WoW was about 5 months ago, so I'm not really aware of any changes since then.

Any advice is appreciated. :)

If you want to actually roleplay, play EQ2.  The guilds there were some of the best I've ever played with.  Only reason I'm not there anymore is because I live overseas now and the event times conflict with my lifestyle.  I also played for the development of the character.  There's lots you can do, and I especially loved taking a High Elf Paladin and turning him into a Shadowknight.  One of my favorite characters of all time, but it was very arduous and I kept getting ganked in the process of shifting my alignment when I was an outcast.  Overall, EQ2 had the better storyline, not sure how it will do with the new Extended version out which is free to play, but limits you considerably.  I also enjoyed having my own house.

The PvP was probably better in WoW though, but I'm not keen on PvP especially amongst elitist jerks like you find in WoW.  Hope you choose wisely

Edit: I also played on Antonia Bayle.  I really miss it.  So many skilled roleplayers on that server...

Qualified for you personally or not doesn't mean that argument of yours isn't pointless. One doesn't have to paint a picture himself in order to know a pianting is bad.

I wouldn't ask Littlestuart's opinion on paintings either.  What is your point?  I said feel free to get it out, but in my opinion your opinion on FFXIV is still worth as much as your opinion on Salvador Dali.  Which in case you aren't catchin on is not worth all that much to me.

It goes both ways really. My point is very simple. If you are enjoying the game please continue to do so instead of being all defensive on the forums. You do same on FFXIV core. Telling people to leave your favorite fansite and you are doing the same here. if it bothers you so much..how hard it is to stop reading?

Very hard apparently.  But this amuses me (^.^)

Random internet posters thoughts on MMO design and "quality" aside, who cares.  Now I know each of the people trolling this game and pointing out how terrible it is all have just great qualifications so we should listen to them, as do people who write gaming reviews professionally.  Never before have these two groups led me astray.

These good hearted people's warnings aside I really like the game, have been playing since beta and certainly have a much harder time wanting to log off than I ever do logging in.

I'm having a great time in FFXIV, and I wouldn't just play anything because I certainly have no interest in playing anything else on the market (and haven't for over a year now after playing MMO's the previous ten).

I have heard this stupid argument many time before.

'Hey have you directed a movie yourself? no? so you are not qualified to criticise a movie.

'Hey are you a muisican yourself? no? so you are not qualified to say this music is bad.

/facepalm

I'm sorry if I offended you, you obviously are qualified to say whatever you want.

You just aren't qualified enough for me to listen to it.

this. and only this. thank you.

I'm qualified to be a troll, but I'm claustrophobic (o.o)

After a little thought. I will answer your original question. "Is everyone here insane?" The answer is yes.

We are all here taking in this electronic opium for the masses. Escapism at its finest. We all live relatively mundane lives. We can't afford to leave our full time jobs, or school, and go on adventure vacations. Those of us that can afford to take time off and have the money to tour across America, or visit Europe and Asia, or go on safaris to Africa...well they're obviously not here playing video games and posting because they have the money and time for RL adventures.

It's why Romance novels sell so well; people can live vicariously through the lives of the protagonist, like that middle-aged single lady sitting at Barne's & Noble in the cafe wishing that Fabio look alike from the cover was only in the real world to sweep her off her feet. Except the problem is she has severe daddy issues and so much emotional baggage that nobody can stand to be around her, and she wonders why "Nobody understands me!" It also doesn't help that she turns down good guys and asks her cats "How come only creeps want to date me?" They get turned down because they don't look like Brad Pitt and/or have money, although underneath they are likely far more handsome.

So FFXIV is like a new batch of drugs on the market to help us get away from our miserable lives. You know, you've been shooting up WoW for years, and before that it was Everquest. You've tried EVE and DAoC, but, by god, you've built up a tolerance and you need a new fix! Unfortunately, this latest batch of electronic narcotics isn't a good one, but when you're addicted, you'll buy anything if it numbs the pain!

Think about it: We could all be reading good books, spending time with family and friends, and improving the quality of our lives by actually working on our lives. Our real world can be just as amazing and as fun as a fake one; we just don't want to put the time into it, so we jump into the fake one and forget the real one exists.

DISCLAIMER: I am wearing my tinfoil hat, and I jumped in a vat of Sarcasm batter, then I was fried in the Deep Stereotype Frier before I posted this. Everyone needs a healthy amount of escapism; before video games it was tv, which was preceded by radio, then books, music, art, and it all started with cave paintings. So don't anyone get all uppity about how I'm accusing you of running away from your RL problems and whatnot. I like to tackle issues with (poorly written and amateurish hack-job) sarcastic humor. :)

Wow...  Your composition skills are without equal.

*Yawns*

It should be this, it should be that, bah...  I'm insane :)

Insane in the membrane :P

Mortal Online had a crappy release, a release so bad that it warranted a free month because it felt like you were still playing BETA phase material.  Vanguard had heaps of glitches at release, driving many away from it.  I was hoping to see some good testimony as to why this game is bad, but all I read here is more whining about how there is nothing to do and how bad the UI is.  These issues have been brought up before, but I guess none of you are Japanese enough to remember what FFXI was like at launch...  The actual launch, not the international launch...  If you're an importer, you know what I'm talking about, but if not, then stop whining.

What does everyone else play then?  Nobody ever lists what you play like I have in my profile, but I'm curious to what everyone else plays.  I mean, everyone seems to be shaking at their little computer desks over GW2, but nobody really talks about what they play currently.  Nothing ever pleases the vast majority, and updates aren't meant to complete a game, but to shut up the vast majority due to the excessive whining and mold the game to the likes of crybabies.  Maybe that's the reason I hate vastly popular games.

The asian market is what makes this game so great, not the ignorant and overly pompous gaijin that want to "be Sephiroth or Cloud Strife and kill everyone with their l33t skillz"...  Want a game like that?  Go play with yourself all over again with FFVII featuring the two most non-hetero characters in gaming history.  In one corner you have a guy with a big sword who can't remember who he is and constantly whines over a girl who picks flowers.  In the other corner you have a guy with a thin, but looooongerrrr sword who longs for his mommy so much that he hurts people indiscriminately, summons a meteor to kill everyone because he's sad (or embarrassed...), and sits inside a crater because he can't live without his headless gooey mom.  I wonder how this will turn out, and so many are waiting for the RERELEASE ON PS3!!!  Tools, keep dreaming.  Here's a preview to hold you over.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_yFZZdYrVw&ob=av3e

If all the tards who whine about how bad this game is got together and made an MMORPG together then...  well...  I guess it would never get released since nobody has enough money, creativity, talent, knowledge or even the capability to come out with something worth playing, if anything.  Just cast aside MMOs altogether if you're too upset with how this release turned out.  You'll spare yourself much social ostracism and dead weight imprints in your chair by doing so.  Get an education, learn how to do what engineers who make games do and help release something good enough to generate revenue.  But why stop there?  Listen to everyone who hates it because it's "too hard" or because "there isn't anything to do" and try to expand that content.  Then when an expansion comes for launch, watch it get put on hold because the money gained through the game goes to the big shots' pockets and not towards the product until they need another parking garage for their new cars.  Well, out comes the expansion that adds a few flashy skills and a few levels that are computations of the prior levels, but on a bigger scale.  That's how the majority of the companies operate since they don't care about the product, but how much money it generates for them since they are overpaid as it is.  It doesn't matter what you think you can change about a game because in the end, it's all a business model, not a game.  The game plays you, not vice versa.  Accept it or do something else, that's the big picture that the player can not think about.  Enjoy or hate, trolls only make the game more popular by hating it.  Stop hating, I don't like playing popular games... *sniff*

The reliance on higher level crafts isn't a design mistake!  It's meant to force interaction with others who want to want craft.

Forcing interaction with multiple crafter to repair your gear is definitely a design mistake. Forcing you to do anything is a design mistake in an MMO if you ask me.

I also find it unbelievable that people would defend the systems in this game by saying things like "it's meant to force {insert time-sink system here]".  Any system that intentionally decides what is fun for you do to at a certain time instead of letting the player decide it for themselves is obviously laying the foundation for it's own agenda.

If a developer would make things fun to do in the first place they wouldn't need tricks and gimmicks to "force" people into doing actions that they wouldn't normally choose to do in the natural course of the game.

I have an overwhelming urge to say "BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME".  Hopefully there are some folks old enough to get the reference.

LMAO @ Field of Dreams reference.
