I played Mortal Online when it was in beta and at release, and stopped playing after a year or so. Recently, I received an email from StarVault asking for player feed back.  Here's the email:

It's been a while since we've seen you in Nave and we would like to extend this invitation to return to Mortal Online or let us know why you left. While Mortal Online is constantly growing and evolving into something better, it's very important to us to know about any concerns our players have while they play this game. If you'd like to give Mortal Online another try to see what's been added and changed in the past months, check the bottom of this letter; however, if you'd rather not return just yet, we'd love to know why.

Please take a moment to visit the below website address and voice your opinion.

Here was my reply - and everything is true:

There is entirely too much Game Master corruption in this game as well as a lack of cheat detection.

I personally have witnessed Game Masters (Discord) and other volunteer Game Masters screwing with average players.  How do I know this you ask? [mod edit - removing program details] This program enabled me to see invisible clients near me which included Game Masters.  GMs  would auto kill players, kill mounts, or straight up take shit out of players bags/inventories.

Now I wasn't proud of using the program and I never used to to gain an unfair advantage on other players, I merely used it to confirm my suspicions on Game Master abuse. I could go on and on about how the duping, game master corruption and favoritism given to certain players has ruined this game, but who would care anyway?

I wrote this for a class a few years ago, enjoy.

Metaphors in Video Game Design:

The purpose of this paper is to assist persons interested in video games to understand two metaphors that are commonly used to describe massively multiplayer online games (MMORPGs).  It is important to note that there are numerous metaphors used to describe MMORPGs but, the two most common metaphors are “theme park” and “sandbox.”  Once a person has a clear understanding of each metaphor this will allow them to better understand articles, critiques, and reviews on MMORPG titles.

The term “massively multiplayer online roleplaying game” was first coined by Richard Garriot, who is the creator of the MMORPG Ultima Online (Safko, Lon; Brake, David).  With the improvement of computer-related hardware and software, MMORPGs have grown from supporting hundreds, of players simultaneously to thousands in a single online environment, or alternatively known as persistent worlds.  A persistent world will constantly evolve and change as the player base interacts with it, be it gathering resources, constructing buildings, or fighting monsters.  There may be several hundred persistent worlds per MMORPG title, but no two are truly identical as each one will have its own unique history.

Due to the increasing popularity of MMORPGs, there are numerous websites dedicated to the review and promotion of them which frequently use the metaphors “theme park” or “sandbox” to categorize the style of gameplay one can expect from a specific title.  In one online article about a vampire-themed MMORPG, the author describes the game as boasting “sandbox and theme park zones” (Senior). In another online article, the following is referring to the style of development for a Lego themed MMORPG: “shifting away from our early eclectic theme-park worlds to the larger epic-driven worlds” (Augustine).  To an unfamiliar reader, metaphors such as “theme park” or “sandbox” may easily cause confusion or fail to accurately detail the attributes about any given title.

The “theme park” metaphor is applied to specific game titles which are designed to be as engaging as amusement parks.  They are exciting, action-packed, and keep players on a specific linear path, similar to that of a sidewalk in an amusement park that takes you from attraction to attraction, in order to expose them to the maximum amount of content possible.  Content that a player may encounter during their travels in a persistent world will range from simple to sophisticated scripted events, designed to create an adrenaline-filled experience similar to riding a rollercoaster. The limitations of the “theme park” design are that the events the players experience will generally be the same, similar to that of a ride one may get back in line for at an actual amusement park.  “Theme park” environments also limit the impact a person is allowed to make on the persistent world as the focus is to keep a player in a constant queue for another ride.  A well-known “theme park” style MMORPG is World of Warcraft.  In this MMORPG, players may compete for equipment and notoriety.

An MMORPG that is created with the “sandbox” metaphor as a focus is designed to be free from restriction and encourages player creativity.  Imagine playing in a sandbox as a child: you could build anything you desire, assuming the sand could hold up to your imagination and lack of construction knowledge, and that is the main goal of the “sandbox” MMORPG.  “Sandbox” creators strive for their titles to be persistent worlds where players create their own villages, guilds, and societies. “Sandbox” MMORPGs rely heavily on their respective communities to create their own fun and excitement in their online world. Similar to “theme park” MMORPGS, the persistent worlds evolve and change as the players interact with it. Unlike “theme park” MMORPGs, “Sandbox” MMORPG players can actually deplete resources in specific titles causing the in-game economy to fluctuate in relation to supply and demand.  A noteworthy “sandbox” inspired MMORPG is Eve-Online.  In this title players assume the role as space ship pilots and have the ability to mine resources from asteroids or conduct pirate raids on merchants.

Although “theme park” and “sandbox” games are fundamentally different, the developers who create them have common goals.  The goals are replay value, player experience and player satisfaction.  “Theme park” MMORPG developers constantly create new content such as new dungeons to explore or new scripted events to experience.  “Sandbox” MMORPG developers may focus on toolkits which may allow players to construct their own housing. Lastly, it is important to realize that the generalization that occurs when a new MMORPG is released may not do the title justice.  One should always conduct their own research, and not rely solely on the opinion of a critic to lump a title into either the “theme park” category or the “sandbox” category.

Funcom,  Bioware,  Aventurine, Gamigo, and Crytpic.

I took my son to Gamestop today to get him a new WiiU controller.

I dont like the WiiU but he needed a extra controller.

While I was their my 7 yearold was looking at a Pandaria strat guide. This guy probably around 20-25 (Ill know soon enough when I go to court) comes up to us and says "Hey bra? People still play Wow?"  I said "Yea brazier , alot of people do".

For the next few minutes I can see and hear him and his friends laughing at me and my son. So I did what any real man would do, I approached them.

I told them I drive a truck , I eat beer batterd fish , I hunt , I own two trucks , I call my wife my old lady , and I have a pair of brass knuckles in my glove compartment and if you bra's want to follow me outside we can settle this.

They laughed and walked away.

We bought the WiiU controller and the game stop worker told me these guys heckle customers alot about the games they play , he thanked me for standing up to them and said we need more real men in this world like me.

As we were walking to my ford F150 truck with Ipod 5 mount installed I noticed the three youths were following us.

I turned around and yelled "Bring it braziers!" one of the bra's charged at me , I told my son to get in the F150.

I grabbed my brass knuckles and proceeded to give him a beatdown with my brawney arms ,there were skittles flying everywere as i reigned down heavy blows on his skull. The rest of his friends went running away.

I stopped beating him for a second and told him he had a choice , he could apologize for spamming nonsence in online games or he could die.

He apologized and I was later arrested.

Sometimes in life you have to stand up for yourself and fellow gamers. Sometimes you have to tolerate immature kids in games , some like to talk about Roseanne Arnolds ass , some want all your stuff and some ninja your loot. But sometimes you find that person in a store or a mall and then its go time.

Thats my cool story bra.

Let me premise my advice by saying that, from your story, these assholes certainly needed a reality check.

With that said, If your story is true you need to immediatly remove this post.  Although three men were coming at you this post does not demonstate you feared for your safety or the safety of your child.  It also shows that the three aggressors posessed no weapons, and by your admission, you used a weapon.  You also began to use deadly force by delivering "[...]heavy blows to his skull."   Without going into the nitty gritty of law enforcement and legal politics, you are going to lose and lose bad if their lawyer finds this.

GOOD. One less child that I will have to play with.

If $15 is too much money for you to spend on a game, then you don't like games, or you are poor. Either way, I don't want to play with you.

Your argument is very compelling.  Do you have a newsletter I can subscribe to?

The monthly subscription price of $15.00 dollars a month is ridiculous.  It is also ridiculous that $15.00 has somehow become an accepted standard.  Small studios need to realize their respective places and not emulate the price points of major studios such as Blizzard, CCP, or Trion.  For those people who enjoy throwing money away please PM me and  I'll shoot you over my PayPal details.

So as many must have noticed by now there's this secret world pay once play forever ad, with that haunting little * near it, i've checked both steam and their web site, and i still see a monthly sub based pricing, are they trying to push false marketting?

Okay, I'll point this out.

The advertisement is "Pay Once, Play Forver*"

Directly below that reads "*Terms of Service applies"

That means failure to obey the TOS will still get your account suspended or banned.  This has to be included in the add campaign. I hope I don't have to explain why that is too.

The whole "congratulations" part was a ploy to get me to read your thread.  I see what you did there.

Really? Watch this:

GW2 is NOT free to play "in that" you have to buy it to play it.

This is after discord muted IRC for 1 hour after players called for his removal.

What do you guys think?

edit: post was deleted.  was 19-8 before it went down.

Discord is a piece of shit.  I played Mortal Online for approximately 10 months, begining in the beta.  I have had nothing but negative encounters with him and other GM staff for that matter.  I'll admit, I used radar hacks in Mortal Online (this also revealed invisible clients).  On more then one occassion I observed invisible GMs griefing players by killing their mounts, and killing them.

The concept of MO isn't a new one, it's just a shitty 3D version of what Ultima Online could have been.  That doesn't mean that I didn't have high hopes for the title though.

These same boners dropped the ball on JGE and ignored the community.  I wont give them a dime.

Also, this is already being done by Gajin   This isn't an MMO... Why the hell is everything considered and MMO ?  It's not massive.  It's multiplayer, that's all.

Post the link, maybe it's corrupted ;)

Can anyone PM me a key??? It would be appreciated!

(I'll post the two that I generate in this thread)
