I just don't understand why no game has done this since DAOC... I understand that devolpers want to model their game after the World of Warcraft one for the simple reasons of the income they've generated.. But when you look back to or hear now what people miss most about DAOC it was the kindred spirit they had in their faction and the hatred or dislike of the other factions..

I won't bash World of Warcraft because I did enjoy it from Alpha to BC but it got old and when they came out with their second expansion I was sure they were going to do something like a new faction or something that would add more flavor.. But that was not the case, wish it were.. I understand their reasons for not changing it too much but another faction just isn't that much of a change...

Am I the only one who thinks that a three faction MMO is the best way to go...?

have you ever heard of AIKA? its basically a korean clone of DAOC just with 5 nations instead of 3

go check it, its the most loopsided shit you'll ever see, one nation can basically wipe the floor with the other 4, and more often than not the second most powerful nation allies with them, furthering the gap.

you can make a game with 10 thousand factions and it will be the same. people will stack one for easy wins, and the second in power will rather band with the strong and pick on the weak, than helping the weak and facing the strong.

what made DAOC work wasnt the setting, it was the players. back then people wanted games to work, wanted competition, wanted fair game. they had realm pride, and the most asked question in the forums wasnt "what side is the strongest in this server?" nor "what class is the most OP?"

they were real MMORPG players.

nowadays MMOs became mainstream, it was like letting the door open for the scum of the earth. Mainstream gamers dont have nation pride, dont want competition, dont want fair game.

they just want zerg, easy mode, and they will do whatever it takes to get it.

when you cant control how many people joins a faction, or who the second most powerful allies with, 3 faction games are exactly as flawed as 2, 4 or 25

because of the players.

Server vs Server vs Server is what Im looking forward the most

GW2 is gonna own

I don't like when developers invent silly new words for the same thing.

A /tell became a /whisper in WoW.

A group became a party in WoW.

A guild became a linkshell in FFXI and FFXIV.

server is a shard in Rift, a realm in WoW.

Stop making up new words that mean the exact same thing please, it's just confusing.

A Shard  in UO became a Server in WoW

A Linkshell in FFXI became a guild in WoW

A group was never really used  in any MMO I played , it was always "you want to party?"

A /tell or /whisper has been used in other games way before WoW

But I know what you're saying, If you you're playing that MMO you should use its terminology, right?

cartoonish graphics? what do you call cartoonish graphics?

DCUO could fall in that category but thats how the IP rolls, its comics after all...

but the new MMO releases ahead are:

I dont think any of them have cartoonish kiddy graphics, possibly except TERA and its animu style, buts thats more related to its asian culture...theres 3 things certain in life, death taxes and that you dont release a non-animu game in asia.

Wait, you don't think TOR have cartoonish style? It looks a lot like the cartoon "Clone wars" to me.

Rift and GW2 have some anime influences (GW2 somewhat more) but still not that much.

40K is based on figurines, and while many adults play 40K there is a bunch of first grader that paints them in my hobby store every friday so I would say that the art targets both cathegories.

I doubt GW2 targets kids anyways, ANETs style might look somewhat anime influenced but I think a lot of the game will be pretty hard.

Some of the games are kid friendly some way or another, others isn't.

I think we both have a different idea of what cartoonish style means

to me it is this:

not this:

I wouldnt call SWTOR realistic style either, but from there to cartoonish (or worse, kiddy) there is a big difference.

if anything, I'd say game developers are focusing in the 18-30 demography. new themeparks and the rise of casual gameplay are the proof.

theres no cash to be made out of a demography that has to ask their parents for pocket money every week

Quite the contrary. Not only do they have gobs of disposable income, but tweens/early teens are a lucrative demographic. See: MapleStory, Habbo Hotel, Club Penguin, Runescape.

I think you will find out (to your dismay) that most of the profit generated by that games come from not-so-teeny players.

In some cases parents will buy their kids some gifts (specially in Club Penguin), but in plenty others there are real adults (at least regarding physical age) with credit cards behind the screen.

yep, Im also half amazed half disgusted...

repeat after me: leaked info is fake until proven otherwise.

the maker of the document basically shuffled the typical and expected year and a half expacs for Blizzard games (WoW SC2 and Diablo), then added a bunch of random stuff

It speaks volumes that according to the document Blizzard has slated 3 product releases for the same quarter (they would never do that, its business 101), and the WoW movie is widely known to have been delayed since Raimi wont be available

IMO: an elaborated fake.

Someone inside was lucky enough to hear on the halls of his office the codename of the new MMO, then made a fairly predictable document and stamped "Titan" on it to disguise it as legit. Thats credible

whats harder to believe is that same guy was in a position so high, that he was told about Blizzard´s whole product line for the next 3 years...and then he leaked it

if anything, I'd say game developers are focusing in the 18-30 demography. new themeparks and the rise of casual gameplay are the proof.

theres no cash to be made out of a demography that has to ask their parents for pocket money every week

what do i think about Blizzard?

yes, I love WarHammer and WarHammer 40k

I think you've missed the point as to why companies move to an F2P model.

It's not to charge the customer less, it's actually to charge the customer more.

Why doesn't everyone just play it? Simple enough question, but I'm assuming not such a simple answer.

The answer is very simple. The 'sandbox group' isn't very popular, it is a very tiny minority.

the answer is even simplier, the sandbox group actually doesnt want sandboxes

seems like "sandbox" is a VIP pass around here, people loves to claim their love for sandboxes and their hate for railroaded experiences.

then 90% of them wouldnt touch a sandbox game with a ten foot pole. they dont play any current sandbox game, they dont plan to play any upcoming.

they just bitch and moan here that sandboxes are oh-so-much awesome, but they will never play one, ever. because they actually dont like them.

5. Rift - Soul System

lol? Thats basically the same old mastery tree leveling we all have had since early WoW days with a minor, unimportant spin.

Rift doesnt have jack shit going for it, the industry will yawn when it gets released because its a FRIKIN UNORIGINAL REHASH

also, for GW2 I´d add Server v Server v Server PvP, seems like a groundbreaking idea.

Im fairly sure that the World of Darkness MMO will draw  female players

its a glorified catwalk

Most MMOs have free trials, where exactly did the OP do his research?

Can YOU give some names?

A Tale in the Desert: 24 hour demo.

Asheron's Call: 14 day free trial

City of Heroes: 14 day trial.

Dark age of Camelot: 14 day trial.

Darkfall: 14 day trial.

Eve Online: 14 day trial.

Everquest: Escape to Norrath demo.

Fallen Earth: 30 day free trial.

I could keep going...

Actually, you can read the whole list here:

Took the words out of my mouth. When I read the first post I was like what? Every P2P game of AA or AAA quality has a free trial!!!!

only really recently released games dont have trials. WoW didnt have one at release either

trials take a while to come, Im sure DCUO and FFXIV will follow suit

the OP is either drunk or doesnt have a bloody clue wtf hes talking bout

Obvious shot at Rift´s impending catastrophic failure is obvious

You can accuse SOE of plenty of things....blatantly ripping off WoW from A to Z isnt one of them

thats a hell of a lot more than Trion can say

He WAS amazing at it. Who would believe him now?

Great thread

yep, thats the problem with this things. snake oil salesmen can only visit the same village once

Im actually surprised he still has ANY job...

I don't mind a little hand-holding tutorial stuff in the very early levels to get to know a game's controls and such, but I am done with the "follow-the-storyline" railroaded gameplay.  Just will not play it anymore.

So, in terms of any new MMO's fitting this railroading format, I'm "getting off the train."  I am sure I am not alone in this growing group of MMO players, so please take that into consideration as you design new MMO's.  Please design worlds, not stories.

all devs response to ReallyNow10

we are deeply sorry to hear that you have decided to give up on our games. We will definetly miss your presence in our virtual worlds.

We are forced to delay the mourning for this enormous loss, however, as we are currently really busy designing games that dozens of millions of moro....I mean players around the world demand. see, no time to cry...

nonetheless all the devs in the world wish the best to the next sandboxy indie game that gets released, and to you and the fifty-some people that play it for the months (or weeks) its finantially viable.

title says it all, you can start preloading it now.

I guess we will have to patch one more time when servers go live tho

I voted for SWTOR. You know why? Because SWTOR seems so far as WoW type of game.

everybody knows that SWTOR is WoW in space dude. seriously, do some research about the games you like, SWToR is WoW with light sabers and voice acting, what a fail.

I find it hard to understand that people believe GW2 will seriously compete with WoW. WoW is P2P and GW2 is B2P, there are probably going to be many WoW-players who will play GW2 alongside WoW. Ahem, but I think SW:ToR will have the highest chance of being an actual competitor.

if WoW became...well, WoW, it was because it hooked the casual market. The vast majority of the 13m WoW players are NOT crazy raiders putting 10 hours a day into the game. They are casuals

casual players can play between 10 to 20 hours a week.

now, GW2 is anything like GW1. Its a full MMO, with everything that implies. Casuals will get nowhere and get no instant satisfaction just by logging 30 mins a day, unlike GW1. GW2 being a MMO will demand time, if casuals like it they will have to devote their limited weekly play time into it.

So basically yeah, noone stops people from getting GW2 and still keeping their sub to WoW.

But then the majority of gamers, which will be casuals, will wonder "why the f*ck am I stll paying for that sub, if I dont have the time nor the intention to keep playing that game?"
