I called it for JGE and I'm calling it for DMO. Just because Vigil had a great run of successful games doesn't mean a damn thing in this industry. All profits go to the parent company... and stay there. In 2011 THQ failed to produce more information about their product, instead we had bad news leaking out from disgruntled staff. When the bad news hit the press, it was not the developers that denied it, it was the head of THQ... eventually. He waited a while to deny the rumors because he wasn't paying attention to the media. He wasn't paying attention to the media because he isn't thinking about the project.

Chris Taylor from Gas Powered Games hyped 'Kings and Castles' right up until the day when they closed the door on the project. Fortunately for us rational people, this sitution is not as misleading. What we have here is a bankrupt developement house that is recieving limited funds from it's parent company for the purposes of creating sure thing, one off, console games. Here is something for Vigil to deny...

In 2006, THQ acquired Vigil Games.[4]

On May 10, 2007, THQ reported its highest annual sales figures and net profits ever for the fiscal year which ended March 31. THQ's revenues reached over $1 billion.

In March 2008, THQ announced the development of the world's first ever cheerleading game using the Wii Balance Board.[5]

On November 3, 2008, the company closed five of its internal studios.[6]

In March 2009, THQ spun off Heavy Iron Studios and Incinerator Studios as independent companies, and announced it was looking to sell Big Huge Games.

In May 2009, THQ agreed to sell Big Huge Games to 38 Studios.

In August 2009, THQ acquired Midway Studios San Diego for $200,000. The sale of the studio includes all assets, except for the TNA iMPACT! video game.[7]

In February 2010, THQ announced that Juice Games and Rainbow Studios would be part of a reshuffle, and would now bear the title THQ Digital Warrington and THQ Digital Phoenix respectively. It is said 60 members of staff face redundancies between THQ's US Rainbow studio and the UK Juice Game's studio.[8]

In August 2010, THQ unveiled the uDraw GameTablet, a $70 accessory for Nintendo's Wii console that lets gamers draw and play on their television screens. The white, 9-by-7-inch peripheral houses a Wii Remote on the left, with a doodle pad and tethered stylus on the right.

On December 31, 2010, THQ closed its Korean office and canceled the development project of WWE Smackdown vs. Raw Online.[10]

In January 2011, THQ sold off its Wireless division to a Swedish mobile company called 24MAS.

On January 12, 2011, THQ unveiled its new logo.[11]

In March 2011, THQ, after its game Homefront was released, suffered a 26% stock drop. The large drop was speculated to be a result of Homefront's poor reception.[12]

On June 13, 2011, THQ announced the closure of Kaos Studios (the developer of Homefront)[13] and THQ Digital Warrington (formerly Juice Games).[14]

On June 27, 2011, THQ announced it was dropping the long running Red Faction franchise. This was believed to be due to the poor reception over the latest game in the franchise, Red Faction Armageddon.[15]

On August 9, 2011, THQ has announced that its development focus will move away from licensed kids and movie-based titles by closing down THQ Studio Australia and Blue Tongue in order to focus on "high-quality owned IP." The company has also closed down THQ Digital Phoenix (formerly Rainbow Studios), thus dropping the MX vs. ATV franchise.[16][17][18]

In January 2012 THQ stocks fell below USD$1, with the threat of the NASDQ delisting the stock unless the share price improved.

As to the bannings, most people who get banned are doing something in violation of established rules. Usually, bannings are a good sign. Rather than meaning that the company doesn't care about the community, it seems, at least in my opinion, to be an indication of the exact opposite.

As to the development issues of Neocron, I never played, so I can't comment. Was this just opinion stated as fact, or are there published sources people can look to for verification of those allegations?

I say around the PAX time frame because their not actually going to be at PAX.

For me its.

  • Squad  / Guild owned Structures
  • Squads ability to destroy or possibly capture other squads stations.
  • Nation Conflict as a backing story and not the be all and end all of the game.

The news which will restore my faith... at this point... is "It's released!!"

Becuase I still just think it's vaporware. This whole on again/off again, devs play musical chairs while we fund it and pull funding....

The way to balance a 2 Faction system  is through a combination of mechanisms only some of the possibilities I have listed here. 
  • Incentives to play on the low pop side of course (many have done this it helps but is not enough.)
  • Power Scaling based on available players
  • NPC allies that will join or can be called to a pvp area by players of the low pop side. Provided the AI is good this would be a really neat way to thematically balance out pvp experiences with added fun.
  • Maybe with the aforementioned system of truces I mentioned, they could have it so the truces of the winning side would break more often giving the other side a chance to make moves if they work together etc. 

Very well put and you bring up a great point. Wow's pvp system was indeed an afterthought and they pretty much needed thier arm twisted as it was. I remember in the early days we would get whole guilds together and raid undercity. We never made it in through the front door do to that damn elevator and the OP guards at the bottem but we had some really epic battles in the courtyard outside. When they finally implemented battlegrounds I was like 'Wow- Blizzard is learning'. Still, if they had it to do all over again, I am sure they would have gone a different route. Even the TOTLK expansion, I read an article where they were kicking themselves for the world pvp they put in. I didn't mind it but they were thier own worst critics.

Seriously I don't think you really needed to say anything more than that. That was precisely the reason I enjoyed 40k as well. All those factions, all thinking they were good and noble or rebelling against oppression, or... whatever it is that the Necrons think.... if they even do. Every single faction is interesting in it's own way. To surgically remove that element, causes real problems as you pointed out.

Funny that you Sloeber, mentioned DAOC. An MMO with 3 factions and, despite the obvious flaws it launched with, became quite successful. Warhammer: Age of Reckoning was made by the same company and was a far superior product, there was a lot of talk early on about Warhammer replacing DAOC all together but that talk ended up dying down after a while. Perhaps there is something to that. Perhaps the number of factions a game ships with will ultimately have an affect on it's success. Maybe not. But it is definately interesting. Warhammer40k, the table top or even Dawn Of War has no shortage of factions and it's success as an IP is well known.

Fortenc, be careful when outlining the many possible machanics that darkmillonline will use when you yourself do not know. Remember that you are as much in the dark about the format as we are. You are of course correct, there are several things they could probably do to make it work, ways that they can bend the lore and plotlines they can deploy to inspire the audience. I can imagine at least three things they can do to make a 2 faction system work, it is the things which I (as a non-developer) can not even begin to imagine which lend possibility to this outcome. Games Workshop giving this product a stamp of authenticity however do very little for me. We should then agree that there are ways they can pull this off and there are ways they can fail horribly but none of us know way it will happen. All we can do is recognize this as a bad omen. If it turns out well, then we shall be pleasantly surprised. If not, well... there will be no surprise involved.

Right on man, you even used the word feeling. I think a lot of us are feeling that. Doesn't mean we won't buy the game. Just means we won't buy it on the day of release. We want to be told our feelings are unfounded. We want to be told it's different. We want to be told that we were worried over nothing. We want a youtube review video that starts off with the words "A lot of people were worried about this game but Vigil did the MOST AMAZING THING" You know, true story but I thought World Of Warcraft was a stupid idea. I was like 'They are making a warcraft MMO? Thats rediculous!" And blizzard made me eat my words. They made me eat my words with Diablo II as well. I ended up learning not to doubt Blizzard. If they made a bad game tommorow, I would be rather shocked. I am hoping that Vigil makes me eat my words. I am sure that there is not a player on this forum that would love for Vigil to erase all thier doubts and make them feel a bit silly for questioning them.

I agree with just about everyone's comments.

1: Everyone wants this game to be good.

2: Everyone knows a 2 faction system can work. If they started with Chaos Marines vs Space Marines and left it at that for a while there would be no complaining. People would gladly wait for Vigil to introduce more races (and factions) at a later time.

3: Contrary to what they may say themselves, the naysayers will wait untill the game actually launches, then probably youtube a review for it to see if it's any good before deciding on wether or not they are going to give it a shot. If however everyone is walking away from darkmillenniumonline in disgust, they will not even give it a shot. If however it is an awesome game, then everyone will be flocking towards it and I am sure they would get caught in the avalanche.

4: Let us please, please, please, please, please not try to convince others that the 2 faction system is the only way a game could ever possibly be made. You can site resources, budget, time and 'Balalancing issues' however when you make that statement you are leaving the industry open to proving you wrong. All any developer has to do is to produce a third faction to prove you wrong and do what many might consider 'The impossible'. Please keep in mind that I grew up with a long line of MMOs stretching back to the early 80s (if you could call them that) and I can not count the number of times I sat and listened to developers tell me how they did something a certain way, not because people enjoy it but because it was impossible to do it any other way. Only to watch them get annihilated by thier competition years later when thier competition does 'The impossible'. I could site examples all day long but I will spare everyone. All I am going to say is that any statement of 'That is impossible' is not a statement so much as it becomes a challenge. A challenge which will surely, one day, silence the developer who made it.

6: The current audience is just about anyone with money. If marmots had pockets and those pockets had $19.59/month then the audience would be marmots. It is ASSUMED however (perhaps foolishly) that vigil/THQ is trying to attract 40k enthusiasts. We could be wrong, perhaps they are trying to attract people with a game that should not be mistaken for anything from Warhammer. I'm not being snarky here. It is assumed that they are trying to appeal to the war40k enthusiasts in hopes of gaining thier business. I don't think they began developing the game and coincidently decided to make it look similiar. I think that they started production with one single goal in mind, that goal was to capture the imaginations of the war40k audience. I think we can all agree that THE BEST thing they can do at this point is to produce something that will attract these people and the WORST things they can do is to produce something which will insult these people.

Ladies and gentlemen, for your consideration-

Allow me to present a clarification of recent comments made on this forum. As many of you may know, we have recently been informed that war40k will launch with a two faction system. Many players feel betrayed by this. Now before you troll me, please take my words into consideration. FEEL. Many players FEEL betrayed by this. It is very difficult to change a feeling and a feeling is not something that you can disagree with or claim is not real.

Instead, perhaps you may consider that this FEELING is something you may try to understand.

The developers of this IP are making an MMO. I think we can all agree on that. I don't have to prove it or anything. This MMO will be set in the 40k universe and by this... they hope to attract 40k 'enthusiasts'. Of which there are many. Due to an unspecified reason (which may have been specified or may be specified at a later time) they have decided to go with the two faction system.

So let us take an objective look at this decision.

1: Two factions. Order and Chaos.

2: "All races will be represented." We do not know EXACTLY what races were being reffered to in that statement however from the screenshots, videos and interviews we can assume Imperium, Chaos, Orks and Eldar.

Now I hope you are still reading this and not typing madly into the reply section. What I am trying to illuminate here is that these two points, although it may sound like a fantastic idea to some, or perhaps a great way to save money, or maybe a clever marketting idea... fly in the face of the warhammer40k universe.

Now some will argue- and rightfully so... that these factions have at times allied with each other, albeit briefly, for various reasons. This is true. No one is saying that it is not. There is not a person among us who has not played a Chaos in other mediums and not admired the vicious brutality of the Orks... or perhaps a particular Ork. There is not a single Eldar enthusiast here who has not looked upon the humans and thought "They are foolish, but they mean well." That is not however what we are talking about. We are not talking about a temporary truce or a secret meeting or a peacekeeping intervention. Really we would not be talking about much of anything if it were not for those two statements. 'All races will be represented' and 'two factions'.

Can you imagine that? Orks and Chaos living together, ordering each other around, giving each other quests. Guarding each other. Openly claiming to be a part of the SAME FACTION. Likewise the humans and the xenos... oh I mean Eldar.

You see my friends, this is what has cuased such a stir. It is not so much the idea that these races would have dealings or even relations with each other. It is the fact that Vigil has chosen to ignore a detail of the game lore, a fairly large one by some accounts, in order to simplify the format for the MMO.

AND IN DOING SO, they threaten to alienate the very target audience that they are trying to attract. For any 40k enthusiasts, it was the deversity and inter-racial hatred which made the 40k universe so vibrant and enjoyable.

Personaly, I want to play a Necron. Not even a necron lord. Just a necron foot soldier in a long collum of cannon fodder, silently marching into destruction. But in a two faction system, the Necrons would loose everything I liked about them. I enjoyed how they never spoke, never felt fear and never considered any alternative to the complete annihilation of all life on the planet they stood on. Anyone who is familier with Necron lore understands that they mean business and it is by thier very lore that they come alive in the imagination of the audience. I am a latecomer to the warhammer40k universe. I started with the dawn of war RTS but I was immeadately sucked in by the lore and how incredibly rich it was. When the Necrons showed up at the end of the first expansion I was like 'WHO THE HECK ARE THESE GUYS?!?!?' and I was on wikipedia ten seconds later.

What you need to understand is that Vigil is proposing to shape the lore around thier game, not the game around the warhammer40k lore. A lot of us FEEL that rather than make that attempt... they should just make another game entirely.

The 20+ years of 40k lore is indeed what attracts us to the idea of a 40k MMO. With out that, it may as well be strange people on some distant planet shooting at each other for no reason. Now I know that you are going to say "Don't complain about a game that has not been released yet. They may have a good lore reason."

And it is true. They may have some good writers. They may have Shane Black (Predator) writting it along with David Fincher (Fight Club) directing it. I honestly hope they do. They will need it, because these developements have cast a dark cloud over the development of this game. 

Mythic recently announced that they are adding the Skavens to thier list of playable races for thier game Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. They hope that this will recover some of thier player base. This new race will be playable by both of thier two factions. The remaining player base is furious and the people who left that game have not returned. Please understand that I am not saying that these LORE problems are what caused the downfall of thier product, all I am saying is that there is noticable tension after this recent announcement.
