So, You do claim that pressing buttons on intreface is intelectually demanding task(monkeys must be geniuses then)? Woah, the next thing we'll hear from You will be that smashing wall with Your head is more hardcore and well thought then going with dumb easy mode around it. Please stop and just think what You wrote. FF XIV UI is bad, clunky and unfriendly. As simple as that. Making such poor excuses is simply fanboyism.

It wouldn't make ANY sense to not release the game in NA and EU.  Yes, the game is designed for the console, but they shouldn't release it NA/EU because they don't need the extra money?
Let's say 75% of the game's subscribers are japanese players, so SE isn't going to release the game in NA or EU because 25% additional profit isn't worth it?  The only time it wouldn't be worht releasing the game here or EU is if the cost of the localizations (translations) is more than the potential profit.
If you have 100k subscribers in NA and 100k subscribers in EU, that more than makes it worthwhile to release in NA and EU.  Just because the UI isn't a carbon copy of WoW or any other western mmo, then it doesn't deserve to be released here?  Give me a break.
Btw, there are already 160k+ pre orders for the game in North America Alone.  That's pretty good for a game that was even designed for the NA audience.

Apart for again not answering my question about Your claims, You just made Your previous point about cultural differences and people misunderstanding invalid. SE wan't more profit from NA/EU. People from NA/EU have their expectation, no matter how different from Japanese. It's SE job to deliver to all playerbase or suffer the bad reviews and company image. As simple as that.

No.  Majority of FFXI players were japanese console players, or PC controller players.  The ui device of choice was the controller regardless of the system.

Well this isn't the answer for my question though. I haven't asked about what was majority of used controllers(as considering FF XI UI design answer was obvious). I was asking about subscription numbers on PC vs PS 2, as I think I saw a chart somewhere here @forums.

This game is designed for the japanese mmo console market, which has ZERO competition.  SE is the only company thatis making an mmo of note.  People in japan do no play mmos and they do not play using the PC.  If SE made this game more PC friendly and NA/EU players in mind, they would lose more than half of their desired demographic.

Again, and why so? Why they'd loose half of their desired demographic if they had made PC friendly UI and a short tutorial? I really have no idea where are You taking those claims from. Especially considering You also say that on japanese console market they have ZERO competition...

People really need to stop thinking SE/FFXIV is anything like the mmos released in the last 3-4 years (Aion, Warhammer, Aoc, Lotro, etc etc).  If people went into FFXIV thinking it was going to be like those games was sorely mistaken.  The mistake was the players, not SE.  Though, SE is horrible at public relations.
I think it's more of  a cultural difference that NA players fail to grasp rather than anything else.  To give you an analogy, it's like senior citizens complaining that the Scions are too small and they need to make them bigger.  Well, senior citizens are not the demographic that scion is most after.  They are after the young, single, demographic who wants ot customize their ride.
It wouldn't make sense for Scion to change their product to cater to the senior citizens when their whole design philosophy was premised around the younger crowd.   Same thing in this situation... it's NA PC gamers using mouse/keyboard vs.  Japanese console gamers.

If what You write here is true it's 100% SE fault for releasing this game outside Japan. And it's not people outside Japan that are mistaken(i.e. it's not their fault), they are just being mislead by SE. As simply as that. If a company releases product in my country I expect it to be functional for me, not some guy in Japan. Thus game gets much deserved negative reviews so far and there are so many "haters", as those are disappointed customers that discovered truth about product offered to also THEM(that is NA/EU people)

Kudos to OP on well written review. You got here all major issues but also promising features this game have. I feel for all nice people that like this game, that SE made it so new user unfriendly as because of this community will be hurt. After all You should be dragged by the game instead having lots of patience to stick with it. I just can't imagine dragging a friend new to MMOs to FF XIV...

As for me - despite being bored with WoW/LOTRO/other MMOs style of questing and enjoying story, music and crafting in FF XIV - I just couldn't bear with all issues. No AH, mail system, shared bank made me said ok, that's it. *ahem* You guys I'm going home :)

If the PC UI is friendlier than the PS3 version, then why play it on the PS3?  IF you can use skills, access the menu, craft, gather, fish, explore far easier on the PC, then you essentially kill your PS3 market.

And why do You assume that easier to play with PC(mouse and keyboard) means harder to play with gamepad? After all it's all about personal preferences. BOTH PC and PS3 users have access to both gamepad and keyboard and mouse. Make two viable UIs(as default k+m for PC and pad for PS3) and let players choose. Wanna sit on couch with controller - fine. Wanna play with k + m on desk, here You go. But SE went lazy way and said play or buzz off. As for examples - Dragon Age is first title that springs to my mind that was also console game with perfect PC UI.

Ah one more thing(I might be wrong here), didn't FF XI have much more PC subscribers than console?

Hrm... My last edit was at 11:01:59. Your post is tagged at 11:24:28... You didn't post a response until 23 minutes after my reply to you, but then you say I keep editing my post. Not sure what you're getting at there.

Hmmm not that much into Your debate, but 11:24:28 is the time that he pushed post message button, not time he started to reply. That means he could start typing, made a post, then used preview and noticed that Your post has changed. Tho 23 minutes is somewhat longish to write a post. Still, wanted to point it out.

If You pay sub or are lifetimer You'll have all previous characters.

If You want to play for free You'll have limited slots and get to choose which characters You want to have access to and which ones will be locked out(if any at all).

In both cases no characters are deleted.

Yeah on that there is no need to argue. Having a slightly different build and being ignorant is well two different sides of a coin. I also agree with being clear about group goals. If you join people who value mostly efficiency, then play as them or simply find other group.

As for Your question - usually majority decides, though in guilds gm/officers also have big influence on what the atmosphere/rules/goals are. That won't work well with pugs(though You can always ask if they don't mind this or that) but among gaming friends or guild it does. It goes more or less like irl, if You love rock Yo don't go to techno party and complain. Instead You obviously go to rock club :)

My first raid invite, although not in WoW brought me with no gear, potions and tactics. I asked leader why You want me as I'm clearly not prepared. He replied that I'll mess stuff and thus make whole thing more interesting for them to fix it. Was a tad shocking for me, but since then I learned that people do have different goals and should just follow them.

My elitism ended with quite simple raid(also not in WoW , but somewhat like pug ICC) which we wiped constantly on boss fight due to peeps being clearly badly equipped/talented. After that I posted at forums about it and learned how immature that was. Why? Well the goal of this raid was to show some more casual people what is like to raid and make them "woah, nice I want more". And I totally spoiled that with my comment as my goal was to get another emblem.

Thus my advice for OP to find a group of people with similar mentality as him.

basically you're saying

"I should be allowed to play how i want"

and I'm saying

"I shouldn't be forced to play with you if we're in this together and doing our best we can't succeed because of how you play. we did nothing wrong. we earned our victory but can't claim it with you so we're entitled to remove you or fix you".

I think you're looking at it from a singleplayer pov and i'm looking at it from a multiplayer pov. I also think you can play however you want when you're alone. I'm only interested in how you SHOULD play when others depend on you. I'm not discussing the singleplayer case here.

What You wrote does make sense in 10, 25 mans where the margin between success and failure is low. Then You can indeed point the 2% less dodge for tank or 2% less hit for dps or 5% less heal. But in most day to day situations like normal/heroic dungeons where You have much larger margin of error and it doesn't matter that professional, optimized group would do it slightly faster. That said it's true You should do it with people of similar mentality.  IMO as long as job is done everything is okay, cuz frankly why does it matter so much if healer pressed heal button few more times or boss fight lasted 1 more minute longer? Of course there are some key talents, abilities and rules to follow. But there is also stupid elitism and childish pointing fingers on irrelevant stuff.

Then are You grasping idea that some people play for fun not for winning in most efficient way possible? And yes, that happens also in groups.  It's also called "Journey more important than the Destination". You assume every other person playing WoW have mentality of Yours - aka play as efficient as possible.

Exactly, why do You care so much about people with different approach to game? Find peeps who play for fun, join them, make friends, guild and bother no more. Like You I fail to grasp the idea behind build most efficient way or be called n00b. As long they do their job fine, why should I care, inspect, browse armory and nerdrage? If dual wield blood DK, keeps aggro as tank, then what's the issue?

Then there is a different thing - class forums. Those are usually for giving class advices to play as efficiently as possible. So going there with my fun for play build and arguing(often against math) that it's as good as xyz build is just dumb. Like in that post above about fire mage. If You can and are killing people with it in PvP, just do so and have fun instead going for forums and making yet another flame thread about someone is wrong on the internet.

I'm really having a blast in WoW with wife and friend duo-ing or 3-manning all different stuff, not caring about PuGs or stupid requirements. I have my own builds, which suits my needs atm. If only You're not into raiding then find few peeps and play for fun.

In short - after playing OB yesterday I can only say one thing - I'm not FF fan enough to deal with this game. If You are looking for game with beautiful graphics, story and player friendly gameplay LOTRO is having free to try launch very soon, wait and try, save Yourself frustration.

And the longer version

The bad:
1. Software mouse has the feel of moving in mud, making the whole experience laggy.

2. Controls - while wsad and left button works(laggy as wrote above) interaction with everything(items, mobs, NPCs) isn't via right click, but through menus. This with software mouse makes PC controls just a nuisance, rather then comfortable. Plugging pad helps, but hey this is a PC!

3. Menu here, menu there. Devs must have been obsessed by windows 98 start menu. But, but shortcuts for inventory, quest log, character screen and right clicking items/NPC to use them aren't unique enough(sarcasm!)...Not to mention it's all laggy making each NPC menu coming after 1-2 seconds.

4. No tutorial for movement, camera handling, basic combat. No tooltips for stats, indication for level up. Nothing. Go read fan made websites. There is hand holding and there is basic player friendliness. This game is unfriendly and says buzz off and stop playing. A nice example is learning through fansite that crafters have no combat skills. Sweet to know after 40 minutes of gameplay.

5. Shops, important NPC are yet another guy with green complicated name. Again no need for easy mode with quest tracker and !/? above NPCs. A different name color, a signboard over NPC booth would be enough. Till now I do not know where to buy anything useful, like say better equipment?

6. Death via some sweet looking creature, while shocking isn't really bad. But frustration with dead body and wondering what to do now is. No message, no pop up. Go look on fan website how to respawn. JUST DON'T DO ALT+TAB.

7. Alt+tab or win key in fullscreen mode. I get idea that they don't want those to work. So what to do? Normal devs would just disable those. But hell no here. Game will crash to punish stupid players. Another "uniqueness".

8. Random crashes and bugs. Enough of these to be noticeable. Black screen after SE logo, crash when servers are down, when alt tab and some random game crashes(i.e. when teleporting after completing guild leve). All sort of errors 10300. A simple message - servers are busy try again later or servers are offline or could not connect to server would solve stuff. Also some minor stuff like non-translated Japanese words.

9. Downloading patches and installing those. Making people to read fan websites to use torrent clients to download patches in somewhat comfortable way is not customer friendly. Also I never seen longer 4 GB patch applying, ever.

The good.

1. Graphic of course. Though with hardware requirements it should be awesome. And it is. Cut-scenes are really nice looking. So are avatars and NPCs. Though more main NPC voicing would be nice.

2. Music. Very nice and definitely adding a level of additional immersion.

3. Story. Polished and nice. This is where true potential of this game lies.

4. Many unique features - crafting, repairing, class changing and many more. Definetely some refreshment here.

Final words

I'd gladly pay and play this game if it's gameplay was at least a bit user friendly. But it is not. It's just opposite way. And fanboism in comments below won't change it. "Fairness in controls for PC/PS3", "no hand holding", "unique design", "it's SE game", "it's beta", "go play WoW". I've seen those comments enough times already but those are just poor excuses. And one final note, this is just my opinion mixed with some facts about UI/controls, not the ultimate truth about game. I'll give it a shot after half a year as I hope this is enough time to finish the half baked game.
