Very nice post OP. It's kinda amusing to see a rational one among "we hate Blizzard and his xyz" crowd. This is not an MMO with one persistent world for everyone and RMAH isn't a cash shop with unlimited supply and exclusive items. I still can't see the way how RMAH can badly influence me. I can never use it and just play my own games OR I can try to get few bucks out of it. If Blizz would sell items themselves I'd grab my pitchfork and join the crowd, but since they aren't why I should care what other people does?

Blizzard e-bay or real e-bay, big difference...

Well for You it will be for sure. But for some people it's not about achieving, it's about owning mobs in newly bought lvl 60 character with uber gear for 1000$. Sure You(and I) may dislike them, but they exist, will play games and will buy gear and gold. So maybe it's not about RMT "companies" being bad it's just some players are. And frankly war with Your customers is kinda odd one, so Blizz is doing the right thing + You can still get revenge by selling not needed items to those people. Profit on their silliness.

The only thing developers should be doing is secure their own networks. Not help people that click on the wrong links

Sadly this way company will only open a different can of worms. As long as Your game is popular people will be hacked and not only those who will go on fishy websites, but everyone. I mean the only sure way top prevent hacking Your PC is to stay offline. Otherwise You are vulnerable. Surely Your attitude and knowledge may increase or decrease the chance, but it won't make You immune. I heard about keylogger hiding on cat veterinary website in some flash banner. You visit it without suspecting anything, don't have newest flash or You have just a bad luck as security hole wasn't fixed yet and boom, You're hacked...

Anyhow if company doesn't care about hacked people they still will lose them as paying customers. Less profits. And do consider fact many of Your customers don't have big PC knowledge and won't really know what did they do wrong. Telling them it's just their fault, go away, is basically making a bad PR, that will backlash on Your company fast.

Unless You're talking about making every nice item bound on acquire/pickup, how will You stop rich people from buying gear from others(E-bay, D2jsp)?

As for loosing a duel to person who bought items on RMAH - how will You know he/she bought them? How this is different from getting those items via trading?

So many people treating a single/multi player lobby game like yet another MMO. Guess that can't be helped as it's site about MMOs after all. Comments about creating content based on gear level...erm this will be whole game, no content wil be created for anyone? Inspecting people? Doing PuG runs? This is a LOBBY game. NOT an MMO. Have anyone even played Diablo 2 here?


 


Anyways if I use trainer/codes/hack for Dragon Age/Civilization/Crysis, will You get affected somehow? After all I can beat enemies faster and better than You do. Wait I know answer. You don't care about losers who cheat, as they spoil their own fun. So why do You care about people using RM AH?


 


Unless You'd play hardcore  PvP, then I guess yea You'll be influenced by it, but regardless whether Blizz would allow or fight RMT You'd have to live with it and either join it or play with bad gear (if You want to have a real life that is).


 


I just can't get people being so outraged by this idea. Unless You are hardcore I see no way this can ever negatively influence You. You just have option to sell items You don't want for cash. Pure win.

Except it's Blizzard who pays for they stupidity. Be it by losing customer(who will blame Blizzard of course) or by offering supporft for hacked accounts.  It's nice to be a knight with shiny armour on white horse when You don't pay no consequences for Your actions.


Nothing here on the list will improve Your PC as visible as SDD. I mean sure You'll need good CPU and GPU to fire off best graphic settings in nice resolution, no one will argue about it. But overall system and game reactivity(loading times) is really sluggish on HDD. It's like getting floppy drive instead USB 3.0 pendrive...

Let's get back to Diablo 2 for a second. It's all about killing mobs for loot in order to progress.


In single player You either played legitimately or used trainer such as hero editor. And frankly You didn't gave a damn how others played their single player sessions.


In multi player on closed bnet You either played legitimately and farmed all loot by Yourself OR traded with people giving them benefit of doubt(as they could bought those items from farmers or dupe them) risking being scammed or even banned.

Same with playing coop or vs. You had to give benefit of doubt to people You played with/against as they might or might not bought/duped their gear.


Now we have Diablo 3 and tell me how RMAH have changed above, except giving You a choice to buy/sell items?

I'd understand peeps being naive and raging over forums, but mmorpg.com joining them? Oh well never had big expectations anyways. Some things You missed in article or stated plain wrong. Here's my list for that and come comments below:

1. Blizz will give some free listings weekly so casual sellers don't have to pay a dime for selling items.
2. Expecting Blizz to maintain huge chunk of multiplayer servers, staff for them, staff for support hacked people, GMs for banning RMT/farmers and players and all that for one time box sale with no monthly fee was ubernaive.
3. This is not an MMO, but a lobby game. Anyone but hardcore PvP players won't be affected by RMAH if they don't want to. Those into PvP would have to deal with people who bought gear via websites like d2jsp, now they have legal alternative + ability to sell items.
4. No offline play is bad, but it hides a lot of code from hackers and that's one of major reasons to do it.
5. Anyone who seriously played diablo 2 know all those issues and is perfectly aware that everything is a result of blizz experience, rather than money grab.

Blizzard scenarios:(warning! some irony ahead, sort of sense of humor required to proceed)


1. Blizz: we go with bind on pickup items to stop RMT.
Players: Why U makin WoW clone blizz, You greedy bastards, we want diablo not horde and alliance /ragequit


2. Blizz: we go with oldschool diablo and we'll fight RMT and spent tons of $$$ on GMs(to ban) and support(to restore hacked ppl) cuz we're charity.
Players: Why U let ppl buy items and not ban them, U should monitor Ebay 24/7. And what's with all item/gold spam? And wtf I got hacked(cuz I buyed stuff from RMT but won't admit it evah), U has no security. /ragequit


3. Blizz: we go with oldschool diablo but don't care about RMT
Players: Argh U blizz get cash from those RMTs, I saw one gold farmer and he still plays and spam and that other guy I lost PvP to haz bought his toon for sure. You are with them from start. Traitorz!!11 /ragequit


4.Blizz: we go with real $$$ AH so we can haz more $$$ and You can have some too, who carez about PvP and rich nerds, it's for fun after all, no real gamerz will buy stuff, right?
Players: Why U blizz are so greedy and wtf with sellin itemz in cash shop. That guy in Iml33t lobby room haz 3 best itemz it ruined my gameplay /ragequit


In all seriousness - this isn't MMO. It's lobby game. If You aren't into PvP RMAH is only a win for You. You can ignore it 100% of time, or try to get some cash out some items. All this caring how someone plays his game in his lobby room is like caring that some people used hero editor in D2 to spawn gear and gold.

The thing that I don't like is no offline mode, RMAH I couldn't care less about...

And to answer someone question - You can set up a game make a password and play it as single player as no one will join without password. Or at least this is how all lobby games I played worked.

2. Blizz doesn't sell any items. This won't give them incentive to create content(or in this case game) around it.

3. Online only is I guess to make hacking/duping harder as You hide a lot of code. And of course to deal with piracy too.

4. I'd call a Blizz greedy if I didn't play whole SC2 campaign on guest account 100% free.

1. Diablo isn't MMO, merely a lobby game, it's a huge difference as You decide who plays in Your game or what game will You join. Furthermore, if You aren't into competitive PvP You just might ignore AH completely. Whole raging is like caring that some guy, somewhere is using idkfa cheat code playing his single player game. His game doesn't have any influence on Yours. Now PvP and random multiplayer games are a tad different thing, but if You played D2 You would know it had dupers, hackers, and real cash item trading and You had to deal with it anyways. Expecting that Blizz would find a magic way to get rid of that is being naive.

2. Blizzard doesn't sell any items. That's another huge difference. If company like Turbine sells their own stuff in shop it gives them incentive to create content that encourages buying stuff from store. Sure, fees from AH will bring some money, but I think the main reason was cutting the costs, rather than income. I mean imagine costs of support to deal with hacked players, GMs to watch and ban, all customers You got rid by banning them or losing because they were hacked and /ragequited.

3. Overall times has changed. Back in days of Diablo 1 multiplayer and battlnet was small deal, same with costs of running it. Now it's huge and people expect support, account recovery and such. This doesn't come free, so if not for AH we would have monthly sub most likely. Now that would bring people in arms...

Have to say that Blizz has a balls to pull this one off. And I'm perfectly fine with it(later more about it). I mean it's grey in moral side, we all want shiny Blizz on white horse smacking bans with big hammer on those pesky RMT sellers and buyers. But reality is a tad more complex.


People was, are and will buy from RMT sites or each other on Ebay and other sites(google d2jsp). I mean sure You can ban them all and hire more GMs and do the 1st shoot myself in foot as it'll only bring less revenue(banned customers) and more expenses(more staff to pay salaries). Even more those who You will not catch will get hacked or scammed and go for Blizz support - again lost revenue cause some will /ragequit blaming Blizz being hacked + more expenses on hiring more support to restore accounts. So 2nd shoot in the foot. All of this to frankly achieve nothing except looking good, not that this will be apreciated in any way as RMT will still be visible both in and out of game and people will still complain. That's the Blizz point of view.


Now off to player aka mine point of view. People will hack, exploit, cheat and buy from RMT gaining advantage and frankly I can't do a thing about it. I can either don't care or don't play. Since it's not MMO I couldn't care less what other will do and get. Besides for me it's about playing not having +6 e-peen sword of doom. AH will get some RMT out of game, so less spamming their offers and such. Besides having a big market of items to finish set is always a good thing. Be it buying by some casual guy or selling few items by hardcore one. Don't like it, don't use it as simple as that. At least You have a safe choice unlike with sites full of keyloggers and such. But I must admit I'm curious how it'll affect in game currency and gold selling.


Anyways I'll be buying Diablo and I care more about no offline mode, which I'm angry about, than real cash AH. Funny thing is that this whole issue could bring completely new people to diablo - less interested with gaming, more in profit again I wonder how will this affect whole thing. Anyways:

As long as Blizz themselves doesn't sell items/gold I don't care.

Not knowing much about AoC, but seems it's very similar to LOTRO aka You won't get far for free. In LOTRO free means demo version till about lvl 30. Then it's pay or play a grindy korean MMORPG. But free part should be large enough to make up Your mind. PvP isn't major part of the game and it's for subscribers only for now. LOTRO is very nice and fun game but You'll definitely need to fork out cash to get the best out of it.

Hehe I'm always baffled with this kind of perspective. You can buy +50 to each stat in lotro store. Best item You can get from raid will give around 150 statwise(say 50 str, 50 agi and 50 vit). So buing 3 x +50 stats is like obtaining best item in game. Yet because they aren't put on some kind special "cloak of uberness" it's fine and dandy as they don't sell gear and thus advantage...seriously? 

As for article I find it closer to trolling than satire. And character of comments seems to confirm that. I for one would not want such controversy on my site, but whatever...

Screenie was taken during last weekend event. I wonder if I'll now see conspiracy theories about Trion making servers full while they weren't...

Trion made a mistake and added too many new servers for release after all queues on headstart. So I guess those servers might have population issues and merging those would be a good idea. Tho if I were Trion I'd wait with merges for TERA or some another hyped MMO open beta/launch goes live so haters will move and make "the sky is falling" threads there.

As for servers from headstart and Sparkwing which I play on - absolutely no issues. During event zerg of lvl 50 players cleared 4 Stillmoor(1 of 2 lvl 50 areas) bosses under 5 minutes. Whole event was like 30 minutes tops till phase 3. So definetely players are out there.

Then end game outside expert dungeons and raids is a bit lackluster for more casual players. Need more activities for that PuG style players which were catered thorough whole game via rifts and invasions. Have to wait and see what Trion does as so far it's really solid in terms of fast reacting on all major issues.

Last thing is WoW spoiled people expectations. Blizz really delivered and made new standard in MMO games. Thus I realy doubt You'll see MMO that will repeat that success in terms of population(12 millions active subs). Also there won't be shocking novelty or more content at start - be it Rift, Tera, SW:TOR or GW2. So either deal with fact that MMOs few months after launch will be worse than WoW in terms of population and content or go back to aged now Azeroth(not pointing this at sandbox lovers as neither WoW nor Rift are their piece of cake). I admit that this can be a poor choice but all I see now are people expecting impossible.

No smaller company on saturated already MMO market will deliver better than Blizz did, it's impossible

I guess after playing LotrO, I just expect a certain level in the content. The 3 manning 6 mans is simply because level 65's are doing lvl 60 content, and the Schools are level 58+ content. I wouldn't be surprised pro gamers are able to do them, I would be surprised is the causual gamer could do 16th hall  with 3 people because you have to pop the mushrooms, dps down the boss, and dps down the runners + keep everyone live. Think your generalization of LotrO is from the window looking and not actually playing the gam :). It was a good jab though but clearly missed the troll mark.



Huh? Level 65's are doing lvl 60 content? Thought You did played LOTRO and know that BG is lvl 65 raid that came with Mirkwood. SG is 6-man lvl 65 instance that came with Mirkwood. School and Library both scale now to lvl 65 and people solo HM aka lvl 65 version of them. So where do You get that lvl 60 content? Also mind I was talking about hard mode versions for those. While LOTRO is very nice MMO it was hardly challenging to anyone but most casual folks last time I played it.

Not that Rift is some kind of hardcore raiding game. It's also casual MMO, although clearly less than LOTRO, mostly due to its group nature.

If this is one of the future F2P genre MMOs then I'm glad I prefer that dying P2P...

OP seemed to play too many MMOs and is clearly a burnout, maybe got also kicked from dungeon or was one shotted by Pyro in WF. Either way - highly negative biased review. Biased as lots of this issues aren't truth or are temporary bugs/imbalances every other MMO has and which will be resolved soon. OP would never play Rift even if none of these issues he wrote were present. He just wanted something else and seen same old MMO concept.

Also brining up LOTRO instances as challenging content...6-manning 12-man hard mode raid boss(LT in BG), 3-manning 6-man HM(SG) or soloing 3-man(school, library) content was a common thing in LOTRO before I left. Hardly hard for anyone but real casuals.

Either You have some minor imbalance(and no Pyro isn't minor ;) ) or You have homogenization like in WoW. There aren't just that many ways You can design tank, dps, healer and made them equally viable.

@graphics
Rift has okay graphics(aka good enough so I don't see any glaring issues and not feeling like in 10 years old game), but much more important PERFECT engine behind. On 4 years old rig I can run Rift at high(not maxed of course) and game is playable even with 20-30 people smacking boss/invasions. Heck it doesn't really slow down that much with 100+ people I've seen in headstart boss fights.

LOTRO while having pretty zone design it has abysmal armour(cloaks were nice tho) and character design. Also horses(mounts) are so skinny there. But when it came to engine efficiency 48 folks in PvP caused lots of lag and server instability. 24 man raids also meant toning down graphic setting for those with weaker/older rigs, not an issue here.
