EVE if You are into space games. Wurm Online if You like more fantasy stuff. For something more unorthodox - You can try out Wakfu as mentioned - it's still in open beta so free and it has very interesting ideas along with turn based combat like in FF tactics. But I think Archage is what sandbox peeps are really waiting for.

tl;dr A sandbox style, turn based combat game that is well worth trying if You don't mind cartoonish/anime graphics. For FF tasctics fans this is a must try.

Yeah I know what You mean by that. Despite getting invite to SWTOR beta I didn't even bother. WOW, LOTRO, Star Trek, Runes of Magic was enough to make me bored to tears before even trying yet another theme park. I mean fully voiced strory is nice but say Fallout NV or old games like Baldurs Gate  beats it badly. So I'm waiting for GW2 like many many peeps here.

Sandboxes are interesting stuff(I just love idea behind Minecraft) but main problem is most of them push heavy open PvP with looting. Why every sandbox have to be hardcore PvP I know not. I'm not against PvP itself as it can play important role in sandboxes, but it should be light - more into making peeps flag for PvP willingly to defend what bad guys are destroying(and what whole faction created, i.e. stable master or crafting facility), rather defending because they can rob You. Or by trying to control important resources or mobs.

Anyways while GW2 might be a nice pace of change from WOW style MMO I wonder which way devs will push it.  Rift had really innovative ideas but they went to raid or die schema at the end game. I hope A-NET won't go that way or make it PVP heavy game.

For now I'm trying out open beta Wakfu and have to admit that they have lots of interesting stuff implemented. Player regulated mobs spawns and resources, weather influencing crops/plants, politics, no NPCs which means solid base for crafting, 4 factions with PvP, law system that pushes peeps into doing what governor wants. Have to admit that I thought it was a kid game but it's really complex sandbox.

Crafting is more then just unique because of the RE thing. Its also the hassel free aspect. Leave everything in your bank. No need to goto a crafting station or make sure items are in your invantory. Just click and tell your companions to do my budding. RE thing is awesome to. There is different levels of crit on a RE so you have a chance to make something really unique and awesome. I have a few crits that are super uber and I have made ALOT of money from. So lemme get this straight as I don't play SWTOR(not into IP and not into another WoW-like theme park) - crafter in this game doesn't gather nor hunt materials, instead he pays on AH or buy it from in game store(on cooldown) called "sent companion on a mission", right? Then it's clicky and see numbers grow? That must be most dumbed down and lacking crafting I ever saw in any game and yet it's called Innovative here. LOL! I mean if You aren't into crafting this can be nice, but for anyone that enjoys gathering and then making stuff for sale, it's a slap in the face.


In every single MMO game out there the stuff I earn during playing is worth nothing, in D3 I can sell it(in both cases legally that is). No matter how low farmers will try to undercut, I can do it more and still get a profit unlike in every other game. This is interesting enough to try and see how it works. Blizz got balls fer sure.
Went to first dungeon, defeated the boss and got nice shiny chest. Thrilled I rushed to open it - the key can be purchased in cash shop. This ended my adventure with Drakensang online.

I'm gonna ask it here - how do You effectively end up with RMT farmers in loot based hack and slash game without making every single valuable item bind on pick up? As basically as long as You allow in game trading You are allowing RMT. Since so many people here say it's just a few hours of brainstorming, I'd like to hear some ideas.

 

Cause the way I see it Blizz didn't do it because they were greedy, but because in long term it costs loads of money to provide support(GMs to watch and ban, call center for "hacked" people that used RMT sites) and You get only one time box payment.  It's not an MMO with monthly payment or cash shop to provide profit that covers maintenance. Imo it was either provide RMAH(where You not only aren't paying but You can ear money) or monthly "sub" for using Bnet(here You are paying no matter what).

I'd say store exclusive potions, scrolls, gear that changes challenging encounter into easy fight when You use those bought cash shop stuff(and in case of PvP when Your opponent does not). For example In PvE that can be special mana pots that make it easy to maintain Your power bar in long and difficult fights(LOTRO and minstrels) or in PvP special immunity to status effects(stun, fear, sleep).

 

And lol at LOTRO stat tomes being "available" in game. It's like 0.0001% drop? But then they aren't really what I can call P2W as 50(or with Isengard xpac 60) more of a stat, when You have bout 1000 of it is like drop in the ocean.

The whole freemium MMOs aren't that fine and dandy like many people say. LOTRO is perfect example of game where Turbine double dips(sub + cash shop) most loyal players. So yeah You get worse of two worlds this way.

Free players just have cash shop and if You are smart it can be okay in longer run. But in short term, after completing free parts(akin to WoW free trial) of the game You have to fork up quite some cash or suffer the grind taken from worst korean MMOs.

In the end sad reality is the best game experience in LOTRO You'll obtain by paying sub AND using cash shop. Which leads to another problem aka designing content to promote cash shop purchases. And I wish this cash shop had only fluff like WoW one...

So yeah in theory freemium model is perfect as You either pay as You go(via cash shop) or pay sub and don't care. In reality it's just a way to put cash shop in sub based game. As long as You don't sub it's okay, but when You do, You get the worst deal.

Quited Rift cause raid or die end game. Gear driven end game just causes problems - in PvP(gear > skill - this really kills the fun), in PvE(You n00b get better gear, *kick*),  in guilds(dramas "cuz he got that tanking set fist and I'm teh main tank"), at forums(casual vs hardcore player wars) and more...

I'm thinking that more mature players(that have much deeper pockets than youngsters) are now done with raiding job they experienced in WoW/LOTRO/Rift and want to just enjoy the game and pick what they like to do instead raid or quit choice.

So yeah I'm really looking forward to no raid driven game and if GW2 delivers that I'll gladly jump in and my money will follow me. I just hope they won't listen to vocal minority with brainsize of peanut that will moan like zombies for purplez and 1337 raidz, as it's granted they will come and whine at forums the moment they hit lvl cap.

For me it was short play - went trough nice dungeon, killed all bosses and then got a locked chest and info(from forums) just buy the key in cash shop. Then something died inside me... Don't care if they sell gear, potions, sparkling ponies, but selling keys to loot in locked chest in hack and slash is just too darn greedy...
SSD will give You most noticeable kick, so go for it. Surely it won't do anything about fps or graphics quality in game, but having fast reacting OS is really nice and You can feel it. Otherwise save up $ and wait to buy whole package as You got some nice advices already :)
Well since RMT can't exist without customers aka players, I'm sayin Blizz made a good choice NOT to fight with it's own customers(lazy douches, but still). As for RMT now they'll have to compete with legit players, that's a slap in their face...

But I can play this game too. Let's take SWTOR - one of the highest hyped games atm. It's EA behind it(ya, I know that BW developes it) and they love profits like every big bad company does. Now the tinfoil hat part:

What if several EA employees set up starwarsgold.eu site and offer exactly same stuff like regular goldsellers does. Now they don't need to farm items(they can spawn them!), don't need pay for accounts. Now all they need are bots spamming chats/mails or even forums a bit. Then juts let the cash flow. Heck You can even "hack" few "customers" and then offer authenticators for 5$.

You're saying like in PvP every win was a result of perfectly executed strategy and proper reactions. But more often then not someone just made a mistake and You haven't. Not doing mistakes doesn't make u skilled - see what I did there?

But without nitpicking - PvP is more dynamic, more about fast reactions, yet human error comes from both sides. In PvE it's human error only on one side as AI is flawless, but less dynamic as You know what is coming. So more twitch based gameplay vs less. Each to their own...

I don't know why some people here can't realize that raiding as an activity does not have to have anything to do with a gear grind.  It's just doing a dungeon with a large group, that's it.
I personally don't like raiding because well...I don't like raiding.  It has nothing to do with the gear grind.  I just don't like the time committment and the organization required; it also makes me feel less important because I'm basically just a cog in a big machine.

Hmmm not really or at least my experiences differ. I don't mind raiding and having fun even with large groups. While I'd rather settle with bout 3-5 people, bigger numbers doesn't mean it's bad. My first raid was just like that. Pure fun, no experience, no strings attached, not even a mic to speak on vent and no gear to obtain.

But then gear gating(aka You have to get set from 1st raid to go to 2nd, etc.) came and suddenly, laid back and chilled people started actually care and got serious. About someone mistake that led to wipe, about someone not having some stupid potion and finally THE LOOT assignment. DKPs instead simple drop dead list, no alt rule, experienced only people rule. And it started to suck. Those were same people who told me, that they like someone new who'll mess raid to make it more fun. So I guess it was about loot after all.

Why? I guess it's exactly like You said: commitment, organization, more people wanting to raid than spots(and to few to make 2 full raids), cliches, some people just not getting along with each other. That + not heaving gear = being excluded from further content. And behold - let the drama(and 2nd job feeling) begin! And to think it was in mature guild full of adults. This experience put me absolutely against gear driven group content. More - look at WoW - You're just a GS number there for majority. People don't do it for fun, they do it to get gear, like in some zombie movie - moaning - purplez!

So again I'm back in casual small guild, but occasionally we do some raid, just for kicks. No one cares about loot or progressing further. We just go if there are enough of us online. And that kind of large grouping I don't mind at all.


So back to poll option. Do I like raiding or not? With no gear, just for fun - sure, I enjoy it. With gear progression - no, I hate it.

Sticking to PvE

Played WoW - end game - raiding
Played LOTRO - end game - raiding
Played Rift - end game - raiding
will not play SW:TOR - end game - raiding

Tbh I'm more than tired of gear progression MMOs and a 2nd job in hardcore raiding guild. And seeing peeps comments complaining about yet another WoW clone and same old stuff to do, I'm guessing there are a LOT of people bored to death with "raid or die" gameplay style at end game. And few that NOT concentrate on that, that aren't full loot PvP based.

So I was completely uninterested with GW2, but now I'm actually more than eager to try it out. Some innovations, 3 faction PvP and dynamic events I quite enjoyed in Rift(and I was hoping they'll expand them :( ) are already enough to get my attention. And now this - no raids. Now that's a FEATURE!

So you can tolerate 6 man content but 8 is just way too much?

As long as that 3/6/8/12/20/40 group content don't lock me from gear and story progression I don't mind it. My second paragraph was about optimal group size for me, so yea 8 is too much.


The problem with "what do You need raid gear for solo?" is about excluding solo people from one of the key thing in RPG games. Character development(via gear). This and story are two things that developers are doing wrong, by hiding them behind raids who are only done by minority of players. Group stuff should be purely for fun, titles, cosmetics and such fluff. Just look what gear treadmill did with WoW community. It's all about Your GS number...

I'm amused about people praising Torchligt so much. It's generic albeit quite fun hack'n'slash game. Bought it, played it was ok. So praised mods were okay but most of them was just trainers/hacks that messed with drops/exp rate/pet/difficulty.

TL 2 will get multiplayer and new classes. Seems okay and I'll buy it when it'll be on sale. But I don't see any novelty about it. Torchlight series aren't something innovative and creative. It's just hack and slash based on Fate game series. Look at this screen. Any similarities to TL?

Diablo 3 will be completely different beast. And every person that can see world in more than black-white colors will know that no LAN, no offline play and no mods have reasons other than just pissing off customers "because we can". Sure You may not like it as those things might be key for You. But raging at forums and bashing Blizzard just because they don't care about You isn't mature at all. It's just acting like selfish brat. Get over it, grab TL2, have fun. The world doesn't spin around You(or me), realize that and still learn to be happy :)
