played both, was in both of their cbt. In both cases, unless you have a lot of time on your hands and your head up your ass, dont bother with either. I'd say perpetuum has much better "pick up and play" ability, and a much more interesting environment, if you're into that kind of thing. I'd say EVE has a much better established player-run society/economy. Perpetuum needs more time and honestly more players before that becomes interesting. Gameplay mechanics wise, they are pretty much the same. Generally though, unless you have no idea what the difference is between a video game and real life, you wont find either game much fun for more than 1 month. The people I know who love perpetuum/eve severely confuse the two, and think that the things that happen in the game are actually epic, and that other players posses actual true power, and actually believe their leaders could run real countries etc. So, like I said, you got to have your head up your ass to fall for those games the way they were intending you to. bdot |

General: Free Players are Toxic

The way to beat hackers is to structure a game that offers no reward in doing so. The way to beat real money trading is to structure a game where the player doesnt feel a need or desire to buy. In regards to real money trading and pay to win~ i personally have never purchased anything to give me an advantage over other players, however, I still firmly believe that if the "rewards" offered in a cash shop are also available in-game through normal gameplay, then there is no such pay-to-win. In such a case, the purchaser is only modifying his or her game experience. For example... gear, and xp. Can you get it in-game? in most cases, all items (or their equivilant) are available in game and all levels are attainable through normal gameplay, this in my opinion is very clearly not an advantage. The difference is, you get it sooner. That is very clearly, just a modification in game experience.
These negative things that crop up are honestly, in my opinion, only a result of a developers failure (or decision) in an aspect of an otherwise great (or not) game.

allow me to give you a one sentence answer to this question of "will gaming solely be on consoles or will pc development continue?" the answer is~ Games will go wherever publishers damn well want them to. stop thinking about what can and cant. Start thinking about what will and won't. I could write a page worth to explain completely what I mean by this, but im sure some intelligent ones out there will get it. I love my videogames, but some of my fellow gamers are so bloody retarded... |

People will do anything within their power to win a compeditive game. The only way to stop people from trying to cheat is to be smarter than they are. Smarter than all the brains of the online community vs your dev team that is. The funny thing is, I've seen devs win that battle before lmao... I feel so stupid... |

Just because its... (insert famous franchise). Fuels half the gaming industry lol. It's the only marginally safe bet that investors have, and smart investors dont invest on speculation. |

what kind of gamer are you? (lets get numbers)

Videogames should be exactly how stressful to each individual player as they themselves want it to be. Not impossible, but probably close to everything but lol. People usually take care of it themselves if the game is more difficult than they want though. (cash shops, hacking, botting etc)
For example, in mass effect 2 the ammo limit was one of the dumbest things I have ever seen, it was explained in ME1 why weapons were able to fire and not run out of ammo by shearing off a projectile from a block inside the weapon. When they changed it, they broke the consistancy in the game. However, a little help from a trainer and I just pretended that it never happened. I set ammo to be the same as me1, and I loved the game :) I would have hated it otherwise. |

Guild Wars 2: 2011 - For Amusement Purposes Only

I think arenanet gets things done in a fairly timely manner. They dont dick around so much. Some game companies have been holding games back for years without much reason. I really cannot believe games like sc2 took so long lmao. Looks like not more than a year was put into it. anyway... Id say something like november 2011 or april 2012 for GW2. I know im supposed to decide on one or the other... but im bad :) |

Hey all, I just got done checking out perpetuum and I figured id give you all the scoop if you have been thinking about playing or subbing for early access. Here are some of the pro's and the con's in my opinion so far.
Pro's -a really nice game atmosphere and feel. -pretty good soundtrack so far. -very similar interface and game mechanics to eve, which makes the game easy to get into. -kindof hybrid combat system between your traditional fantasy mmo and again, eve. However, I think its actually kindof nice when you learn all the hotkeys, it helps pick up the pace of battle.
Con's -very similar interface and game mechanics to eve, which to some people is too bad, because its nothing new. -the devs have been caught padding the numbers on perpetuum's hype meter on mmorpg.com. They have since had their hype reset to zero by the moderators of mmorpg.com. -the devs are taking too much advice from players, which is leading to imbalance in the game. -the people who are feeding the dev's these changes are greedy and manipulative.
conclusion Well, first im not going to tell anyone who I am in perpetuum as that would surely upset some people lol. However, I have had the pleasure of being in the biggest/oldest corps in the game so far, and they all have connections with the devs. I also had access to the dev's private skype channel with some other folks so I do in a sense know what im talking about. From what I can see, the dev's lack integrity... and they are getting fed some seriously selfish crap from some serious douches... and they seem to be listening to them. all in all, the game isnt a failure yet, but the masses will surely make it one eventually haha. Most of the people who are in Perpetuum now that are talking with the dev's are ex-eve players that missed the boat by a few years on eve and never got caught up. They are playing perpetuum, from what I can tell, to get in at the ground level, cieze control and own the game. I seriously feel some anger from eve being taken out in perpetuum by those players. That's fine as it is kindof the nature of the game. However, it doesnt bode well for future sub numbers of people looking to get into pvp. They will simply be cannon fodder. Yet again, similar to eve I see a repeat of B.O.B. in the making.
I'd like to say lastly that I have no quarrel with this game or the devs etc what so ever, I simply made observations and judged to the best of my knowledge what is going to happen with this game. So please dont flame me or make assumptions about that. I have beta tested countless games and I have seen this before. I was actually really looking forward to this game, and from what i saw it was going good until the community stuck their finger in it. I understand their situation though, their main fanbase on launch will be those people. But its hard to reason with "Me" people. It could be turned around by launch, but in all other cases, it didnt happen, so id say its not likely. I think this game will accumulate stubborn and cut-throat like people, again similar to eve. Which is not a bad thing, people in eve love the way it is lol. Sorry for all the eve references, but really, its the easiest comparison to use for explinations. anyway, thats my 2 cents, happy gaming all~

most people lose interest before the reviews ever come^ |

I should also add that f2p curbs any hostilities towards game devs. Your players will always pay you what they think it's worth. They need to suck it up and stop charging for expansions too. Gamers are not stupid anymore. What happens when an expansion comes out? Unless you love the game, you dont do anything. You sit and wait and read reviews, afterwards you buy it if its good. That lag time hurts companies, and slows down business. |
|
|
I like f2p because I get bored of any one online game easily, and in a lot shorter time frame than 1 month. The amount of paperwork involved with credit cards and paypal whenever I want to switch genre's for a few days is a serious pain in the ass. I want to be able to switch MMO's several times a night without paying 6 seperate subscriptions. The rest of the world is with me on this if they realize it or not. When a game gets interesting we shell out money. It is no different than making a donation imo, and getting a little something in-game also for good measure. |

Originally posted by brennok Oooh I really like this idea, It would be fascinating to re-learn everything we know about the world. flip the characteristics of all elements on their ear. Perhaps their could be a calculated pattern as to how exactly the world shifted which you could uncover, and then actually predict which elements will now do what. You would definately need some options for players to experiment and try new combinations and perhaps have an engine designed to react accordingly to what the player did. The results would be logical, however appear random. Id be at that for hours on end lol. using my deductive skills to find out why something happened, and if that happened, then this should happen probably, so I would try that, and then another thing... until it blows up in my face of course.
yeah... respawn methods will probably need to be plentiful.
Thanks for sharing, cool idea :D |

Originally posted by Styij As crazy as that sounds, I would actually love a game where I can create things out of sheer will hmm maybe with an eeg scanner on my head. But, i want to create it instantly... im impatient :P I doubt game devs can pull that off anytime soon through. Spores creature creater is actually really good at this, but still takes too long and quite limited. Second life is unlimited, however takes you a decade to create something. By that time im thinking about lunch.
So basically I would like to see a game that can read my imagination and instantly create it. I think i just scared myself, but its good to be honest about these things lol. |

Originally posted by FreddyNoNose Haha, i could see that doing us a lot of good. The scary part is that, dispite that being no different from real life. If you did that, you would see a whole bunch of amazing mmo`s because people wouldnt fear failure so much. They would be more open to make mistakes and learn from them, because hey, its just a game right? :P haha, but, life is too actually... |

EVE has the potential to be way more successful if they forced the players to be decent. In my opinion they just have to take away player anonymity and the game would really thrive. However thats pretty close to impossible haha, so good luck. I enjoy the atmosphere in eve with the chat box closed and sitting in a newbie corp. I like exploring the game and producing things for the masses, because frankly, eve players consume a lot haha its hard to keep up with the destruction some months. I stay just below the threshhold of all that crap, and I quite enjoy it. I never have a bad day on eve. I doubt many other eve players can say the same. |

Though when you think about it. the monalisa is just paper and some paint. so relax, its just another way of communicating some interesting ideas. |
