First of all, if you read the books you'd know GRRM is destroying the series. And good riddance for taking so focking long writing them because he wanted to make money off TV shows etc.

Second, using well known book/movie IPs never works anymore; they always crash and burn and never live up to the hype. (hell maybe thats just all MMO's nowadays) So its possible someone told this to GRRM and he made a decision that will bring him the most money right now and give him a good excuse for why the game was horrible. "Oh, the game company just did an awful job"

I just find it curious that Matt admitted something I was thinking while reading all Zenimax interviews, which is that TESO looks like more like an Online RPG very story driven and quite casual (like SWTOR and TSW), rather than a classic MMO

That's why I linked this interview, which other than that doesn't add anything new.

 The damm story thing again? Anwer me this, what is the difference between a story driven themepark and non story driven themepark? None. Both have quests, dunegons, etc. Story simply means increasign the cinematic, lore aspect of the game. SWTOR is abit more different, because it as a full single player literally inside the mmo.

TSW "story" is more like lore. Beyond that, it as just as much mmo in is as, oh i don't know, WOW, RIFT, TERA, WAR, AOC, GW2, AION, etc, etc, etc. You know, themeparks. They're mmorpgs just like any.

Actually it is very easy to understand the difference between a story driven MMO, and a classic MMO.

A story driven MMO has is strenght on the story but it is very weak on MMO elements, so what happens is that once you run out of storylines the MMO elements are not strong enough to support the game once the main feature (the story) is done.

That's why I call SWTOR and TSW, Online RPGs (yes they are technically MMORPG), because once the story is gone, the players will go too, and that's because the MMO part of the game is rather weak and won't hold players for long.

A classic MMO obviously doesn't rely too much on the RPG element (mainly story) and has its strenght on the MMO elements which incentivate  the players to play together or against each other (MMO), rather than spending 90% of the time going through a storyline in complete solitude like it happens in SWTOR and TSW (and in any single player RPG).

 

The fact that lots of classic MMO have failed though it is not because the original idea of MMORPGs (playing together or against each other) is now obsolete, but rather because developers decided that it was a good idea to copy/paste WOW rather than evolving the MMO genre to a different direction, with new ideas.

Zenimax looks like is NOT going to be the ones who revolutionise the genres either, settling for a MMO which sits between WOW and SWTOR.

 

You know, the funny things is that I was saying the same exact things about SWTOR 2 years before it was released, while the majority of SWTOR fanboys were trying to convince everyone and themselves that SWTOR wasn't going to be just about the story but it would be the WOW killer.

I always said that SWTOR was going to be basically KOTOR Online, and I wasn't wrong.

I am saying the same things about TSW which has just being released and still has lots of support, but I predict that in a couple of months time, after people run out of stories,  it will follow SWTOR fate

So don't say that no one didn't see it coming, because to me it is obvious it will end up that way.

The MMO genre has changed since 2002.

XI was so time consuming and punishing, it's no surprise it did not receive mainstream success among the fans.

While the MMO/XI purists can find a lot to nitpick about XIV's direction, we'll see what the mainstream thinks of it. Your opinion regarding the game and it's direction does not ensure it's failure or success. It could be a personal failure, which is honestly too bad for you.

You often post interesting stuff but this is a sad arguement.

With FF11 it was proven that FF fans do not enjoy the MMO genre en masse. We will see if FF14 simplistic and dumbed down gameplay attract them or if it was something more specifically about MMO's that drove FF fans away from FF11. But many will remember FF11, do some research about FF14 before buying and come accross The Reviews :P . Some people will ask friends who may have tried it or know someone who has and come across The Disillusioned FF Fan.  Many won't bother with research at all and just not buy it based on their knowledge of FF11 and/or word of mouth about FF14.

Furthermore, FF fans have been recently let down with the produce of SE. I think they will be less likely to jump all over a video game that has been out for more than a year and has horrible reviews already, that is coming from SE.

Word of mouth about FF14 is pretty abysmal. If game stores like BestBuy and GameStop buy FF14 in limited quantity based on the success of FF14's first release, the employees of these stores may not feel the need to upsell the game. They may feel like freely expressing what they know about FF14, even if its outdated, biased, polluted, ignorant and just plan wrong.

I've played enough MMORPGs over the years to know that as soon as instancing is added to a game, grouping and socializing dies. Immediately.

LMSO thanks for that! I've often wanted to say that to so many people on here! But it is true that GW2 while not a lazy project nor a broken game, doesn't appeal to the so called hard core PVE players because there isn't a gear treadmill, there isn't a monthly fee, there aren't raids to get geared for before doing the same dungeons ad nausium, they aren't forced to be online constantly to do anything they find meaningful (like get gear grind, grind rep), there isn't gear solely from raids they can wear to walk about the major cities and strut making them feel relevant, and finally, there isn't  this bloated advantage in pvp where it doesn't matter how skilled or terrible you might be you have macros and gear that gives you an unfair advantage.

Haha!  Couldn't have said it better.  I'm currently playing TSW.  While I really like the deck/build theorycrafting freedom and some interesting quests I'm finding the rest of the game to be paperthin.  While I thought SWTOR was the antithesis of a virtual world I'm starting to think TSW is a close second.  Small zones and nothing gives you the feeling that you're actually in a world.  It has the console feel down pat.  Developer content driven to the nth extent.  It's funny everyone bitches about WoW but it's actually more virtual worldy than the latest AAA MMO's released. 

 

I think there is no doubt that devs are going to end up in the lobby heavily instanced MMO game design.  Player freedom or non combat things to do be damned.

 

Sidenote: Did anyone ever know anyone that had a Neo Geo?

Neo Geo sounds familiar, was it a console of some sort?

I hope you’ll enjoy the improvements. The UI will prolly be the most important change. With this new design, if you played WoW, it will be easy to feel comfortable in the game environment

In the article I linked, found on page 1,  the Dev clearly states that he wants to make the transition from WoW to FF14 as easy for WoW players as possible.

He never said "only in regards to UI", you can choose to believe that if you wish. We'll see when 2.0 releases.

In a new interview he talks about doing away with open world partying in favour of instanced content. Also party grinding will be removed in favour of a quest based leveling progression. Not a mixture of both but a quest only based leveling progression. Think of it like doing leves over and over. More interesting then party grinding?  But party grinding can be fun after a bit of quests and crafting. You can choose where to go, get some friends together and smash mobs. Think about having to go to A, then B, then kill C and then return to A, over and over. Interesting? Maybe for awhile. But that'll fade fast. Then its just another kind of grind. Except this one is drawn out with a shitload of text and walking to do. Woot! Replace some party grinding, with quest grinding and add shit tonnes of timesink to it. SE is definitely on the right track.

Lmao you whiteknights aren't going to be playing FF14 after i2.0 flops either. But you are perfectly happy to make SE feel like they are on the right track and not rethink their plans.

I woudn't be surprised if, like the officail forums, the 2 people who are so adamently defending SE aren't just some SE hirelings. Trying to hype up 2.0 some more.

Its very possible that SE's new plans is this. Build as much hype as they can for 2.0 and PS3 release. Get one more massive box sale period for FF14 and then coast with minimal patches and expansions, up to the point that they go F2P.

In FF11 the combat was slow and such to actually allow for players to utilize a variety of interesting spells and skills before, during and after battle. It made the combat very fun for some people. Just because you would rather convince yourself that some other way of doing combat is more "skillful" (this is MMOs we are talking about... but you go ahead and believe you have epeen skillz) does not mean that other ways of playing are not appreciated by different people. Nor does it mean that time based, strategic battles are outdated. It could very well be a sign of changing tastes in video game players... but changing tastes does not equal better tastes.

So get off your high horse.

Actually the Roman Empire fell because of aliens. I learned this from that crazy guy from Ancient Aliens on the History Channel. It's on the History Channel so it has to be true. I guess that means the world will end with an alien invasion. I don't know what form it will take, but I'm putting my money on Tiberium. While US money still has value, because Tiberium is going to change the game as far as wealth goes.
