There aren't many  videos floating around from press events, but if you're feeling devious there ARE (really long) gameplay videos that may or may not conflict with some sort of agreement to not disclose



EDIT: also, the german video above in english - I think they probably got the same pre-made video and dubbed over it as they saw fit.

I have dealt with Funcom. I've enjoyed the heck out of Dreamfall, The Longest Journey and AoC. So, what's your point? More interesting, what will you do when a lot of them will end up enjoying their gameplay time, will you scold them for it or will you accept that if you might have disliked or dislike some games, that isn't necessarily a reason for others to feel the same too?

In todays gaming world no developer is allowed a second chance...ever, especially when it comes to MMOs. It doesn't take much to get people to hate a developer and not just hate them but hope to see them fail for "disappointing" them with a buggy launch or a game that they just didn't like. In the old days people that didn't like the game would just move on, but today that is unacceptable...the game needs to be punished for letting you down.


The game can launch with hardly no problems and be well recieved, but even if the developers themselves say something that a person doesn't agree with its enough justification to go to the forums and launch a hate campaign.


I played AoC on launch day and expected there to be problems, and there were. Sure it could have been smoother but it didn't stop me from enjoying the game and looking back at it as an enjoyable experience. For many people its not enough to not like something, they have to see it crushed and disavowed from society all together and the people that played it chastised for giving it a chance.


and of course, a lot of people who hate the company most fervently, they will end up playing the game as well, since they've been following it just as closely as its actual fans. "Never passionately hate someone; you run the risk of falling in love with them." Just in time for V-day ;)

That aside, TSW does look interesting. I still have a lot of love for CO for it's open-plan powers system and TSW looks like it could offer the same. The developers have said that every skill has a counter skill. So, that's what they need to balance. If "Sword Smash" is a great skill, and everybody starts using it, then somebody will come up with a deck using the "Sword Smash" counter skill. Then, that person would potentially pwn, since it would be countering the so-called OP skill which everybody would theoretically have in your above scenario. So, then the "Sword Smash" people would be like, "GAAAAHHH! This isn't working all that great anymore. Everybody is equipping that counter. Time to try something else." See how that balances itself?

I see how it balances itself in theory, but in practice it won't work. There will always be imbalances because there will always be people who figure out ways to get every advantage they can get.


It'll only be a matter of time (and it won't take much time) before someone figures out that their "Sword Smash" skill becomes less counterable if they use it with the "High Jump" toggle, due to some secondary effect of "High Jump". So something has to be adjusted, which has a knock on effect in another skill area. And with 500 skills to balance, that's a lot of unintended consequences.


TSW isn't going to be magic, it's going to be flawed just like every other MMO ever released. Expect it and you won't be disappointed.


If your flavor of the month build includes Sword Smash AND High Jump, how long do you expect ity will take for the counter-build to include the counter to both? ;)

It's an arms race that nobody can win, and that's entirely the point; you eventually discover that your sword smash build is now no longer optimal against anyone but the people equipped to counter sword smash-- you've given up all your viability to prevent yourself from being countered. I've seen the majority of the skills (they may have been changed since I saw CB, but that's the nature of the beast) and their comparison to magic the gathering is incredibly relevant. Sure, if you play against someone with a red deck it's probably a burn deck, but it's entirely possible that they surprise you with something else entirely. It's entirely possible that what you are expecting and what you get are two totally different things. Embrace the metagame. Enjoy the metagame. Live the metagame.

You don't dictate what games are and are not for me. I've played MMO's since Ultima Online and I will continue to do so. Graphics are only one aspect of a game but you can have incredible gameplay and terrible graphics in a MMO setting and still fail.


Stop being okay with mediocrity and a falsely inflated ego. MMORPG's are no different that other genres of games in that I expect to get a total package. I want it to be good all around. You should to so we aren't stuck with a stangnant genre like we have now.

If gameplay did indeed matter more than graphics, then I would expect posters expousing gameplay over graphics to be a current subscriber to Asheron's Call.  It arguably had the best game gameplay of any MMORPG, but some of the least palatable graphics presentation in the genre, especially in the very early years.  Since AC probably has fewer than 10,000 subscribers, it is hightly unlikely for anyone visiting these forums to be an active AC subscriber.   Graphics and presentation are as important to MMORPGs as innovation, design, lore, gameplay, and any other element that can be imagined.


The point should be made that there is a substantial difference between graphics and aesthetics. For example, WoW tends to have poor graphics, but a very good aesthetic. Likewise, the things that folks are complaining about in TSW (choppy animations, poor lip syncing, choppy animations, that weird reflectiveness that makes everyones skin seem polished, choppy animations, the way people hold pistols like they're carrying two dead skunks at arms length, choppy animations, etc.) are halmarks of a game with overall good graphics but with a poorly handled (or at best, incomplete) aesthetics. of course, the game is still in beta, and most of those things are likely placeholders, so grain of salt.

Still don't see how it is classless.  You can by your skill selection define a class, just because there are no pre-defined classes at the start doesn't make any difference.   I am sure if everybody that wants to adopt a traditional role finds a particular talent/skill useful it won't be long before everybody who plays that role is adopting the same thing. 


The only way I can see it being classless is if you have individual tailored experience.  Just because you have the power of choice with abilities/skills I don't see you have removed class. You may have multiple tiers, sub classes,  but if I can choose the same options as you I can play as the same class.



I realize this is from a million and a half pages ago, but based off of that loose definition of classes, Magic the Gathering, rock paper scissors, paintball, and working at Walmart are all situations where someone is playing a class.

I think that every time someone says something about funcom and AoC I'm just going to say "Ragnar Tornquist" repeatedly until one of us is banned. It's really starting to get ridiculous =/


There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize a game. offhand I can think of PvP/PvE integration, ability balancing, and ARG quest integration which I am cautiously awaiting more information about. If your criticism can in no way result in the game being improved, then it's not exactly cock full of pertinent infornation now is it? And as consumers, isn't that ultimately our goal?

It's the first MMO of its kind in this genre. It could be made by Maxis and as long as they took the idea seriously I'd give it a shot.

everything seen so far has been in third person. there was a short video clip where zooming in all the way would go into first person, but as with most MMOs this really had no benefit to it aside from admiring the artwork.

Simply imagine BF:BC2 took place in an open, expansive, living world of similar scope to WoW, add raids, quests, instancing. Then maybe switch the setting to sci-fi or fantasy and that's what I'm talking about.

Those are all abstract things that make no difference to people who want *character* progression. wearing certain gear for completing certain content doesnt matter if the gear does not help you. If it's just a status symbol, you might as well be playing gaia online. if your level keeps going up the more you play, what difference does it make, since a character of level 9000 hits just as hard as a character of level 1? aside from everyone wanting to kill the 9000s, that is.


you cant make both gear and levels irrelevant and then expect people to stick around. what I would like to see is characters that *always* get better at everything they do. say you are a blacksmith and you have only one pattern. We'll call it "iron shortsword" for fun. Lets say the first one you make raises your skill level to level 2, and the sword you make hits for 2-5 damage. say you spend the next year making iron shortswords. by the end, you could be making masterwork iron shortswords that hit for 500-700. now after that year, you make an iron mace. that mace, since you are now making it for the first time, will hit for 2-5.

I feel that if you make everything in the game a feat of endurance to master, people will naturally gravitate towards being specialists, and that makes things interesting. paladins that cant heal because their spells are only level 5 but their melee is level 950, people having to decide early on what they want to get out of their characters, etc.

Yes it is, lol. It might not be important, but it's still an annoyance that takes away a small bit of enjoyment for some.

I guess I'll never understand why it is an annoyance. For me is the same as when others move around, run, flashy spells, speak with each other. When others jump it makes absolutely no effect on me because is not different from a lot of other things peoples do when they are around you.

Even if it was annoying. Trash talk in chat is not a reason to remove chat. Like jumping chat may have it's annoyances but it's still a far useful feature that can't be cut off because of little stupid things.

Agreed. The only time jumping bothers me is when im a melee character and ranged classes are able to use jump shots to kite me effortlessly. This is not so much being annoyed at people being stupid, but being frustrated about being outplayed by a skilled opponent. Usually I play kiting classes for this very reason.

edit: also, i'd much rather treat the cause than the symptom. if you want to address something that people do out of boredom, make a game that keeps people from being bored.

typing in caps is annoying, so we should make keyboards without shift keys or caps lock ;)


or, you know, dying in pvp is annoying, so nobody should be able to attack me. maybe instead of pve and pvp servers, we should have jump servers and jumpless servers.

I'm not blaming anything, you complained about them advertising for beta several years before the game is actually released, and I gave you a specific reason as to why that complaint is not valid. you can either concede my point or move the goalposts again. You do have a good point though. It is true that some companies fare better than others in harsh economic times. Toyota is doing fine in spite of their dozens of recalls and faulty equipment, but GM goes bankrupt. That's the nature of the world, I suppose. Funcom had to lay off 20% of its staff, and as a result the game was delayed between one and two years. Since then they've opened a development branch in Canada and things have picked back up from the looks of it.

LOL, then i commend you. I for one can't stand something that isn't at least mostly polished. I truely hope Funcom learns to listen to their community and logically approach problems. At this point I have seen no signs of this happening any time soon.

I will check up on TSW from time to time to see how its doing, but only for morbid curiosity.


polished and badly launched are not really the same thing. WoW had a bad launch but was very well polished; AoC, from what i hear, had a fairly good launch, but the lack of polish is what angered everyone, i.e. it was an incomplete game as opposed to simply a buggy game. I will take a bad launch over an unfinished game anyday. Other unfinished games would be pretty much anything touched by cryptic heh.


I'll be honest, the real reason I have faith in this game doing well has nothing to do with funcom's history or who is making the game or anything like that. I have faith because I took the time to start thinking like a businessman. If this game does well, it is the first of its genre and fills a much needed niche. If it fails, funcom WILL go bankrupt. they're pouring all of their money into it, and they know full well that it is their last chance to win over the crowd. They've already taken over ten years on its plot and universe, and nearly 8 on actual development. This will either be their magnum opus, of the most fantastic failure in the history of the genre. Personally, I wouldn't want to miss either :P

You are entitled to spend your money wherever you see fit. You also haven't experienced the same crap that others have been through with Funcom, so of course your opinion will be different. I wish you all the best in the Secret World. 

The facts that would make me not buy this game would be the fact that another modern day horror MMO is released before it :)

I have a high threshold for bad launches. I would never let a bad launch prevent me from playing a good game. I also know that everything Ragnar Tornquist has touched so far (even casper back in the day) was a massive success, if not financially than certainly critically and artistically. Dont forget that games are art, yo~

I didn't say they had no power. They obviously do have massive quantities of power within the ranks of the republican party. IGN: If someone were only familiar with Age of Conan, how will the overall structure of the game and the gameplay differ in The Secret World in comparison?

Ragnar Tornquist: The team has been working on The Secret World for quite awhile, long before Age of Conan was released, and while there's obviously interaction and sharing of ideas between teams, our approach and philosophy has been a bit different. I don't think you'll necessary see much similarity in structure and gameplay, but we get to enjoy all the benefits of a mature engine and tool set. Age of Conan looks beautiful and The Secret World will look even better, and there's a huge advantage in being able to use many of their tools and technologies in order to get The Secret World up and running a lot quicker. We're at a point now where we're testing and tweaking the gameplay, and being able to so at this stage gives us a lot of confidence in being able to create a fun, exciting and long-lasting game.

More specifically, our combat and role-playing systems are completely different from those in Conan, as is our mission system and PvP. We're slowly revealing our feature set, and we believe people will be excited about the choices we've made and how The Secret World is taking shape.

Yes, The Secret World equals The World Online equals Next Big Thing equals Cabal equals a project I’ve been tinkering with on-and-off since ‘97.

We started proper preproduction on the project in 2002, before moving the whole team over to Dreamfall in mid-2003. We even had a playable demo of Cabal ready for E3 ‘03, using a completely different engine from what we’re using today. We started the project back up last spring, right after Dreamfall shipped, and the core team has a lot of ex-Dreamfallers, including the art director and audio director, several artists and animators, and a couple of the designers, so it feels like a family thing - which is great.

I wont lie, this kind of thead bothers me. here's why:


"Is this game going to be instanced?"

"i hear it is."


"who knows!"

"actually, according to 7 interviews and 4 press releases, there will only be instances used in the case of dungeons and script-heavy story missions."

"yeah, sure, that's what they say, but we all know it's going to be instanced."

"man, instancing is going to kill this game."

"i refuse to play this game because of how terrible the instance system will be!



"hey guys, in an interview the designers said that the game will be almost as instance heavy as the original. what do you think of that?"

"Nah, it won't be too bad."

"I trust them to not instance the game too much."

"I'm sure it will just be for story missions."

It's a pet peeve of mine. ignoring the information that exists in order to make a point that is based 90% ignorance, then ignoring the information when it is presented to you. TSW will be open world with instanced dungeons. GW2 will be an open world/heavy instance hybrid. Both have been stated repeatedly. There is no longer an excuse for it.
