I approve this thread.
MMO genre is dead, so don't expect any change in 2 years, or in 20.

All the MMOs i tried can't compare to WOW in smoothnes. The movement response is perfect in WOW. You feel in control of the character and at ease in the world. Everything feels natural and smooth.

Other MMOs you are fighting with the controls, everything is clunky and "not right".

I could tell you several experiences in EQ red serves where a powerful guy would not kill someone lower level, even in a heated discussion. That code, that respect for the other, prevented it. This is what happens when something "serious" (i know a game is not serious strictly speaking) might happen. See, what i mean is, you can't compare how people behave in a random modern MMO to how people will behave in ToA. The consequences are different, people behave differently.

Yes there will be the assholes that will have a lol out of killing people, just because it's important, but normal people will be able to protect against them. For instance. Have you tried to get people to help you when someone ganks and corpse camps you in WOW? It could be possible some years ago, but now normally nobody cares, unless you have really good friends. That's because the consequences, the damage done to you, it' not too big. But in ToA, the damage is big, people will react, because they will want to be helped too when they are in trouble.

This is what happened in EQ, it was based in the solidarity between players. You help me, i help you. This builds a community. Of course it wasn't only a selfish interest, it feels good to help someone that's really in need.

 

 

Not to put down your hopes in humanity, but that was 2000.  Most MMO players were young adults back then.   Little kids couldn't buy PCs and parents didn't want their kids playing with freak adults playing games.  PCs now cost next to nothing and are used as baby sittiers.  The little snots of today will be very happy to gank you for hours.  The community of the past will not exist.  They now have rotted their brains or no longer play.

The beauty of it is that little snots won't want to be part of a permadeath system, or as i see it, an "aging" system, because 100 deaths will simulate your character aging. They want a zero risk system,and in ToA, as in Eve as Dihoru said, there will be consequences.

OMG... I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the title... Trials of Ascension!!!

This MMO is pure gold... i was so sad when they stopped development, i thought i'd never see something so amazing being done again, and here it is!!!

I remember reading the features and thinking, wow, this goes beyond what i ever imagined for the MMO of my dreams!

Hope they can make it this time!

I would play LTRO.  I left it because it all was so devoid of players of my level (low) and i have no friends playing either. But I liked the game a lot.

I like to RP a bit too.

It's a business and an honor, but I'm grateful.
So you are proud because the MMORPG genre is completely destroyed. Ok. Good for you I guess.

We are talking about VIDEO GAMES right?

I view video games as a disposable entertainment product and I'm pretty sure that's what most people expect.

It's a video game as Flight Simulator 9 was a video game. If you played it seriously for years, it becomes so different from a disposable entertaniment product that it can be considered another thing. Of course it is a video game, but if you take into account all the experiences, strategies, adventures, that spontaneously  "happened" along the game play thanks to player interaction, it's not only a videogame it's something else, it's an MMORPG with every letter having its full meaning. This lost now.

Of course you can say it's nerdy. Well it is.

Let me add another assumption, that is killing MMOs, in my oppinion:

"MMOS have to be fun"

Bluntly said, MMOs don't have to be fun, they have to be epic, you have to suffer (but not frustrating, hopefully). At the end you have the feeling of having done something amazing, which doesn't equal to fun exactly.

If even SoE start to mention the word "Sandbox", maybe something is really changing.

If SOE starts to mention sandbox, say goodbye to sandbox. They will pervert it beyond recognition.

Remember EQ "You are in our world now". Developers where the Gods in that world. We adapted to what they chosed, not the other way around like today.

Looks interesting. But i prefer the cubes.... i know triangles are more versatile, but...

Seeing the poll results and some of your comments, I think it's safe to say that GW2 have been a succes so far.

And I want to comment the developer's information during developement, not hyping the game beyond reality. I have the feeling they have been honest all along, and this deserves some gratitude in these days.

I haven't played the game, so I just comment based on player's opinions in this forum mostly.
