"China bans foreign investment in online gaming"

No, the US would not lose a war with China, but it would also never win. It would be Vietnam x 100. But it will not come to that, the US could quite easily just slap a 100% import tax on chinese made games and consoles.
My point is it would not be a war with China! It would be with China, Russia, and probably Iran. China alone can put an Army together with as many people as the USA has citizens. Damn place is like McDonalds, over a Billion served. 100% import tax would not work at all. It is American bussinesses that are buy Chinese and selling to the consumer. You would just be putting Americans out of work not Chinese. |

I understand that coming from a more secluded and conservative society some of our opinions might bother you, but Chinas poor record in upholding human rights and civil liberties is undisputed fact. Censorship is a very offensive thing to many of us, in my country drug cartels enforce it by killing and kidnapping journalists. If something as trivial and harmless as MMOs falls prey to state control i cannot imagine what this policy will entail towards political or ideological speech. I used the war on drugs as an example in the post that you quote. Enforcing a prohibition dictated by a foreign country (drugs are legal for us to use and carry) has resulted in the sort of violence you describe in a game becoming everyday reality to us. More people have been killed in the drug war on Mexico than in the war in Irak = Iraq I guess!, amongst them a few close friends of mine. Youre welcome to express your point of view on this forums as am i, a freedom neither of us would have in China. I speak from personal experience in expressing my distaste for the publishing of art (even videogames) being subject to anyones whim. I cannot for the life of me understand the sort of prudish morality that would ban skeletons or demons from apearing in a videogame. As much as i may loathe WOW i could hardly think it hides any sort of corrupting influence, far from it, the fact that Horde characters are available as choices speaks of a more liberal and enlightened depiction of fantasy themes. And as for your Taiwanese game (if it exists as you describe it, as it does sound like an internet myth) i will compare it to the Americans allowing white supremacist and other hate groups to rally and comunicate their thoughts. The first amendment enshrines the ideal that freedom of speech is in itself a more precious asset than whatever hateful and ignorant message others may atempt to abuse the freedom it provides to deliver. Liberal democracy depends upon this value, free speech, and it is up to parents, not the state, to educate and protect their children. Finally, while i acknowledge we may be skimming topics which this is not a place to discuss, the banning of videogames (specially MMOs) remains a legitimate subject of discussion and concerns us as gamers. Chinese morality may influence the content of videogames as publishers seek to make them available to a larger audience. It is us who should make the call of what we find acceptable in games, not a comunist regime. Edit; To posters in favor of multiculturalism, human rights are still considered universal. I dont agree that different peoples merit different rights. Stoning a woman to death is as wrong in Riyadh as it is in London. Forced labor is as bad for a Chinese kid as it is for an American.

3 Factions, Qs, Freeps, and Exiles. Just having 2 factions does not work well, 3 is where it is at. |

I want to have a discussion about WoW hating...and the reasons behind it.
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 10/09/09 1:51:58 PM
Why WOW is hated. Hell that's easy! They took MMOs and down graded them to make it sooooo easy that my granny could be ubber. MMOs before WOW were challenging and fun to play, now you can jump into most MMOs and solo your way to max level. WOW is resposible for this, UO, EQ, and games like that were hard to play, required you to group and DID NOT hand feed you. Complain all you want, but if you were not around this type of game in the late 90s to early 2000 then you really do not know what an MMO should be. OH YEAH, and Blizzard advertised the hell out of WOW which is something no other MMO ever had to do. Thanks. |

Hmmmm you mean to tell me that they came to your house with a gun and said "BUY MY BETA OR I AM GOING TO KILL YOU"? Last time I checked you had to goto their web site and buy the game which allows you to beta test. You did not have to do it, it was a choice. I did it, I have been on like 3 times because of updates or server being down. I figure if it last for 4 more month then the game I bought will be paid for because I do not have to pay a $15 monthly charge that I would have had to pay other wise. For me all is good, the longer the game stays in beta the cheaper I am actually getting the game for. WOOOOOOOT lucky me, and you {mod edit} are complaining LOL |

The simple answer would e "Try it for your self" I played in beta then played at launched and I loved the game. It was much more enjoyable than other MMOs that I have played. The only reason I am not there now is because I play with my brother and he is not into that type of game so back to boring EQ2 for me!! I want to pull my hair out on a good day with EQ2 and I never felt that way with DF. The world in DF is huge.

But I did not Pre-Order so I can not play I can not even sit in queue so yes you have early access :) |

Here you go though just to show you an example, the first thing I saw on google searcgh:
http://www.motivators.com/Promotional-SportBottles-Custom-13-344.html
Personalized items for 79 cents and a couple dollars... go figure huh? That is from a website selling to individuals.
Now imagine asking a factory in China to make you a lot of an item, just copies, it is only a couple cents each believe me.
lol, You haven't shown me anything close to the work that it takes to make an embossed metal box, and your saying they went to a china factory we don't know where they got this from an I will say this theres no way that they bought these for a couple cents per and if they did the people that made it are losing money so the chances of that happening are extremely low. Also the 79 cent bottles were plastic, the alluminum ones were 4 dollars or so and almost 10 dollars for stainless steel. We don't know what type of material the box is made of either. Instead of arguing over what the cost of tin is, why not argue over the fact that this game is just like DFO NOT READY TO SELL! |

I am trying all the races getting ready ready for NA server (plan to start fresh there) Alfar is well Alfar. They have no alies and they really don't even like them selves! Even in starting areas the cry b4 death "Help Me" is like a dinner call, before that poor player is even dead there is at least 15 players there waiting to loot his ass. If he takes to long to die someone will GANK him to speed things up. Then he will be dinner lol. Ork is where I started, I have a lot of my skills over 50 (not macroed) and the other Orks were better nature and easier to get along with than Alfar. Grouping as an Ork was not a problem as grouping Alfar is just waiting for the session to end and know you will be ganked by your group and lose everything. Humans is what I am playing now, community is not terrible but have yet to group. People do like to kill humans more than other races I guess, at least they have some easy zombies and skellies near by to get armor from. Dwarf I played in beta, and even then it was a mostly crafting race, community was ok. Going to start an Elf after work tonight will let you know how that goes. As of right now Ork is the winner for friendly community and generally getting groups and having fun.
Originally posted by Isturi It seems that WoW players for the majority are in their FIFTIES. Not that I have anything against ppl who play MMO's past FIFTY. Actually I think on one hand it is a very cool thing to want to keep up with your grand kids. But I remember the days of WoW when the HARDCORE fanboy was in there TEENS. It goese to show that once you EVOLVE a MMO to its SIMPLEST form anyone can play. Dont get me wrong I plan on playing MMO's until I'm NINETY. Is that WRONG?? come to think of it I think I heard somewere there is a NINETY year old player somewhere playing WoW. If you can verify this pls do. What are your thought or comments? I'm I the only one that SEE'S the TREND??
Sorry bud, but just because I am 50 does not mean I wet my pants and need a nurse. I have never played WOW nor do I intend to. |
