I'm curious to know why WoW become such a big hit while EQ2 was just kinda there. They were released the same month, and are both fairly similar.

So why did WoW get huge rather than EQ2? Was it just better marketing or what?

Rabid. Blizzard. Fanboys.

Used to be a man could find himself an overpowered weapon and a field of rats, and just start goin to town.

Now you have to speak with the captain at the barricade to help fight back the invading orcs.

Who then tells you to seek out the commander at the outpost.

Who asks you to help deal with the encroaching undead population.

But don't forget to talk to the general in the guard tower about collecting a bag of undead-orc anuses first.

Whatever happened to the simplicity of bashing in rat skulls for hours at a time. I'd personally rather level through a test of rat bashing endurance than be some lacky for a quest spewing army of tedium.

I'm actually a fan of this, I never liked questing in mmorpgs but it seems..."Popular" with most people.

The issue is people got fed up with the "Grind" of killing mobs for xp and now every company avoids mob grinding like the plague.

To my surprise wildstar actually yields quite a bit of experience killing mobs (i grinded up to 22 on mobs) but still requires you to quest occasionally to progress (like in the tutorial).

Double this.
WoW forums are exploding atm with anger due to being $30. More than it normally does. I think the lack of content for the last...what...6 months...if not more? Its starting to get to them.

Funny how they have plenty of time to create cash shop items rather than improving the game people pay monthly for.

Who the actual fuck writes the descriptions of these things? Are we still 14? And how is it that Blizzard can't push out an ounce of content for over a year but they have time to make more edgy mounts for their cash shop?

I just can't even comprehend why Azeroth isn't in flames right now with the amount of pissed off and bored subscribers they have.

Because providing content detracts from profit. its really easy to understand why they don't.

The answer to this problem is pretty easy...

You have to accept less money to cater to the niche, or Bend your design to complement the masses.

NCsoft will never accept less profits. therefore the game will eventually become easy, its just a matter of time.

Why can't Blizzard give us something every month or so for our subscription.

You know why.

hmm seems the graphical quality has diminished since last marketing spin...

I know I'll get flak for this, but they need to nerf the level 20 dungeons. I don't mind the difficulty, but clearly there are many that do. I'd rather lose the increased difficulty than never get to experience it at all due to people quitting after a wipe or two.

That's exactly the approach wow took, and look where we are.

Its the behavior of most mmorpg gamers now that they just quit and re que because it yields a higher chance of completing content..

Prince returns!

Curious, If you have a multi display how does the cockpit look?

Where does it say the game cost $200m?

Lately since swtor i see many people saying that $200m is average for making an mmorpg...

Originally posted by Distopia None, definitely not my type of game what-so-ever, I personally hope they're able to charge full price for as long as they need. I don't see how a game get's better if it's cheaper, time is more valuable than money.
Its not a matter of better with the price or not,  its a matter of what value you think the game is worth to you.   Some people loved skyrim V and have over 2000 hours logged, but waited until it hit 19.99 before buying it.  Because that game has a certain value attached to it to the person buying it.

If you look at steam games for example, some players are willing to wait until games hit 75%-90% off before buying them.   Its all about the person and how long they can wait to save money on a product they are instested in.   Some cannot wait for the price drop because they are so excited to get the game because no matter the cost they want to have that launch experience or for other good reasons that they see the value still worth it at launch.

In the end the game isn't going anywhere and there is nothing wrong with waiting until a price drop, depending on your level of excitement or want for the game.

$60 /wo sub fee.
f2p with flexible micro transactions.

There is no way I'm going to pay $15 a month to do a raid 4 times a month ever again.

Originally posted by sacredcow4 They focused dev dollars on end game, which will result in a lasting game, not a sub for 2 months and run game. I love the pace as I hate leveling.
If this is the case they still wasted a lot of money creating environments and storylines that people speed through.  If they did indeed focus on the end game in a way that results in a lasting game this means they did more than create 5-10 dungeons for top end gear.  It would certainly be surprising to me but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Yes of course, Carbine should have spent virtually nothing on the game environments, just put in something à la Progress Quest or given one level per quest so that you can reach endgame as fast as possible and grind gear for the rest of your game experience. Yeah! That sounds like a great game! Sign me up!

Why not make a game where you get 10-40 people together and just kill bosses?

No, really. Make a game with just 50 "levels" (raids) and have a lobby match make you with people.

way cheaper.

I thought id jump over here to check with some MMO 'experts' in response to a discussion currently underway on a Wow forum... thats a discussion about what features in MMO gaming did Wow introduce into MMO gaming?

Im sure that the vast knowledge on these forums can shed some light on what MMOs were first to use any of the features below :)

1.  LFG - Looking For Group, tech to find groups.

This was iterative. its like it was not there, then it was.

First version was table which showed qued individuals.
Then it progressed to actually putting those individuals into a group.
After that it put together the group, sent you to a dungeon.
And finally it went cross realm.

while this was happening various other companies were working at their own solutions to the problem.

NA - Myrcalus (Oceanic PvE) is the official server (still located in the US though)

Always found it quite strange that We are aligned with NA for mmorpg games.

HeroEngine.  Hands down.  Or unity..  you can buy a bunch of premade webcode and SQL backend infrastructure for unity..  HeroEngine is cheap, easy, complete...  ESO uses HeroEngine, to give you an idea of the flexibility and capabilities.

IS Sql really the best way to go for a back end...?

If i were them, I would of documented how they did their leveling and released it as a guide for $25.

Pattison and Flim on Hazak(EU).  Grats to them.  Now they can finally get some sleep!

Also, I just want to say that this was the first report of level 50s I have heard of since the headstart, so if somebody else reached it before these guys, then my apologies!

Wait what, How many hours has the headstart been going for?

I posted this on the telegraph thread and decided it might warrant a thread of its own as I see many scoffing this gameplay as easy and not at all challenging. Do you all think a player who normally tab targets and is unused to aiming and expects an attack roll to decide if the mob hits you will find this game difficult ?

In my opinion since you cannot click on a name and heal the person you have to aim and heal while dodging these. It is not as easy as watching the video  because you are standing there facing these damage telegraphs while trying to aim and heal a group mate.

or to move out while a party member may be dying to heal them when they are quite far from your very small aoe heal. Don't get them in your green cone and they are dead.

It is more than the usual F2,F3,F4 (for each group member) press heal gameplay current MMORPGs have. It is in my opinion harder than WoW or SWTOR, EQ 2 or other stand at the back and heal MMOs as you have to aim the heals.

I am sure some of you are very good at moving about but to try to tank or heal while dodging these telegraphs is for me at least quite challenging. May be not for you FPS and real quick with reflexes types who can whack 30 people with 50 whacks. The first one is a level 20 dungeon called Ruins of Kel Voreth and it is like a spray of balls that change trajectory so you have to watch them like a mean game of Tetris while trying to aim and heal a group member. I would like to see how well an average MMORPGamer plays this game. Not you experienced super agile ones but those who normally play tab target whack a mole gameplay.

I get that you consider this cheap and unsatisfactory gameplay but I doubt the average MMORPGamer is going to be that optimistic at their survival skills in the face of these odds. Of course if you are looking at it from the point of view of a DPS character who has only themselves to worry about it looks super easy. Also when you solo you only have to worry about getting yourself out of the telegraphs but in a dungeon your responsibility to your group members makes the job of healing and tanking while dodging challenging.

How I personally feel about them is that I am unused to this cacophony of  input but I am going to try and play the game before I assume it is going to be bad. You can turn it off so those of you who do not want this overload of colours can safely play without them.

Allow me to preset this video to you.
Its the Valiona and Theralion encounter from world of warcraft.

It presents almost an identical set of challenges your taling about:

1.Position and movement vs Graphical effects of badness
2.Keeping Players in healing range vs obstacles

I don't see much difference tbh. if that video played 1.5x faster i would be on par with wildstar from a viewers perspective.
