Do people even read the thread before posting? Just one page back I posted this link
I didn't feel like going through 13 pages of opinions and didn't have time anyways. I looked yesterday at the Windows site two days ago and it was not there which led to my question here. Smartass! =P

Its been available since november 2014?

Fallen Earth is pretty much exactly that.

How is Windows 10 with games currently? What about those who reformat their computer once or twice a year? Will the license cover a reinstall beyond say 3 times if no hardware has changed?

Performance in the current available build is about equivlent because they have not changed much of the kernel it would seem...
build 10,000 might be another story however...

I see everything MSFT trying to do to make Windows 10 relevant being converted to Linux+.
Yes, Linux with it's less than 1% marketshare on the desktop is a threat to Windows..................... What games are you going to play on Linux. Minesweeper? All of the Linux distros combined can't even beat windows VISTA in marketshare. Linux on desktop is a joke.
With the new game streaming tech Linux can be a real option for gaming. You can stream any game from any OS all on any device. Even console games. Only problem is the desktop side of things it still has limited support. Options are few and most people who PC game use their PCs for more then that. With Microsoft moving to game streaming, companies like SteamOS should be worried more then the other way around.
There is some indication however that usage of Linux is expanding, albeit slowly, though without some real support from games developers, its unlikely to achieve any kind of 'critical mass', there is a degree of support on Steam for Linux, but it's still a long way from being 'popular'.

I've been trying to game on Arch Linux for a couple of months now even with steam its abit of a mixed bag.

Native Left4Dead 2 for example runs pretty well out of the box but noware near the performance of a windows machine. Valve has stated that they have dumped a truckload of cash trying create parity with the source engine for windows but still cannot get there entirely. They even outsouced people to fix nvida's linux drivers.

So while mainstream gaming on linux is gaining some traction, Its still an up hill techncial battle even with someone like valve throwing truckloads of cash at the problem.

Originally posted by Scalpless I don't see these becoming popular anytime soon. Augmented reality is often presented as an aspect of daily life in sci-fi (and in that bathroom example), but it's not comfortable enough to be that yet. It's not well-fit for gaming, because you living room isn't. That Minecraft example looks neat, but it's not very practical. A use in 3D modeling is probably the closest we can get right now, but it has to compete with decades on 2D UI development. Oh, and the Japanese will figure something out, but that is a discussion for another site.
It is well fitted for gaming, but more for pen and paper roleplayers than MMOers.

You could also play a boardgame (like Chess or Axes and Allies) with buddies from afar in a very different way than today..

The technology do have plenty of potential, but maybe not so much for playing MMOs. It is still interesting though. :)

UI's are everything for user experience in a game. It's the window in which you perceive into the world. A window where you can control your character.  What sort of features would help improve default UI's? What sort of features help to make a UI for more of an immersive experience?

I have put together a quick basic UI layout in photoshop to kind of show you what I personally think makes for a good clean UI. I fully understand that there are other UI elements in which would be there or not there depending on gameplay and mechanics of the game so there are a lot of variables there.

Below you'll see my rendition of a basic UI and a list of other features of what would make a UI immersive.

  • Transparent UI that a player can determine the opacity of the UI frames when not in combat. Can fully disappear if player chose.
  • UI that is moveable and scalable. You can move or scale your HUDs anywhere you like.
  • Clutter free. I think a good balance of the screen helps to make a good balance of the UI.  Centralizing your eyes to the middle of a screen to the important part for gameplay. Such as: Hot Bars, HP and Mana Bar ect.  I also think not including a mini map would increase the immersive experience for players and use a compass instead. I really like that attribute from Vanguard.
Below is my mock up UI of what I think would make a good basic UI. It's a screenshot from Vanguard Saga of Heroes. That game was gorgeous! Post what features that you think would improve a default UI and post screen shots as well!

Here is a link if anyone would like to see a larger version:

I dont like your UI.
And its not because of your workmanship, its because its the classic UI design.

For example, What purpose does that backpack icon serve? Pressing "B" or "I" or some other button already creates a interface between you and your bag. Unless your trying to convay some kind of status of your bag then the icon is redunant, Same goes for alot of other aspects of the UI.

Im a firm beleiver of the minimalist approtch only exposing what is nessasary to the user in order to get tasks done.

The examples they showed aren't all game related.

For example, they showed how a hologram is able to assist someone on how to fix a sink.

It projects the assistance onto the world.

In that paticular example:
I want to know how those annotations know where they need to be placed in 3d space and by a second individual that has never actually survayed the target area none the less.

Its hard to tell what is still "science fiction" or "conceptual" at this stage having not actually tried the device.

For ppl asking

"What's the difference between Oculus and this?"

From listening at interviews...this is a true hologram an make things appear in your living room, in your's a reality ON TOP of reality.

Oculus is simply another reality, this is a Hologram, an environment, actually there next to you, within the real world.

You are not transported into a different reality like with VR, you can still see the real world around  you with this system.

Oculus = Virtual Reality
HoloLens = Augmented Reality

There is speculation/rumors that it will move to a subscription service to align with their new "Windows as a service" ideology.

Has any console game that required a "subscription" (being first or thrid party) ever done well?

Just watched the windows 10 livestream...everything is gona change.

Also, HolloLens looks very cool.

I am looking for a game that I can raid in. Taht has great and exclusive end game raid rewards like I used to have in EQ and EQ2.

How is the raiding in TSW? Is it worth checking out? I am much more interested in PVE than PVP.

It's not really a raid game. There is content you can do in raid format, I guess, and there is manhattan which gets old after the first 10 times. TSW really isn't an end-game game.

Yeah..not really a raiders game..

However, the customization of items is supurb.

Originally posted by Nanfoodle Does not work like that, it will drop somewhere by you but you dont know where. You will see the event in the sky but so will everyone else within a few miles of the game. The event spawns zombies and also the noise pulls zombies from the area. Plus any player can take your air drop items. So the event is 1/2 PvP and 1/2 PvE. Now your fighting zombies and players to get to the crates. You can only start the event if your server has a good population. So how is this pay to win? More like pay to start a poop storm.

Doesn't really matter who gets the items.  Player pays money and somebody gets an advantage.  Another way to look at the situation is how is this any different from a typical microtransaction game that has PvP and full loot?

The only difference is that the player that bought the "cash shop item of pwnage " doesn't have to die first to lose it.

That is the weakest arguement for pay2win i have ever heard.

I bought it.  As i told someone else, I like multiplayer survival games with zombies.  I didn't care for DayZ largely because I found the controls severely awkward.  I loved Rust for a time and had fun with Infestation.  Currently, there is no really good zombie survival game out there for me.  H1Z1...I haven't played enough to form an opinion, but they really need to add more loot in the game (I read the patch last night addressed this along with the E stutter).  I don't regret the $20 purchase but if you want a polished experience, I'd recommend holding off.  It's still playable just not sure how playable it is yet.  I've only put an hour or two into it thus far.

This makes me wonder.... Consider the zombies are basically irrelevant, people can kill them easily or just run away, you're playing multiplayer survival, that's just one aspect of H1Z1 that you like and that's fine. I can understand that, but that leads me to another question... Is there anyone that just likes the entire package and the entire concept? It seems people poke and prod, I like this part or that part, when that happens, like in this case, I can think of other full games that are better for multiplayer survival, they might not have zombies, but again consider the zombies in dayz and H1Z1, they are basically irrelevant.

I like the idea.

Im waiting to play because i dont think it warrents $20 to play atm, but after watching some youtube videos the game seems fun if you can forget all the analyzation and critique everyone seems to be obsessed with..

lol It's still in development... Graphics are usually one of the very last things to get polished once everything is optimized.

I have never seen a game actualy come through with this statement.
The overall graphics qualilty does not change significatnly at the end of a project.

Just looks like his not being tolerant to whining freeloaders.

In other news, you aren't special, contrary to what your Mommy told you.

In a f2p game 80% of your 'content' are those whining 'free loaders'

To me this sounds like a hell of a lot of work on the back end to make the database work with this kind of setup.

Thanks for the feedback.

The dungeon wouldn't be totally shut off from others that want to run it, they would just be cutoff from playing that particular instanced dungeon with any players that locked theirs. When you get to a dungeon entrance you could look at a list of current unlocked instances or ignore it and start your own instance. I might or might not include dungeon progression stats to the instance list.

For instance:

* Who or what populates the list of currently running instances?
Are you going ask every group to submit a unique identifier (other than a primary key) each time they enter a new instance?

*Can a group member be a member of many instances 1:M?
how do you catch that?

*When gaining access to an open insatnce, What information are you actually going to expose to user?
It cant be something like a primary key it has to be some kind of concatination of fields on the clientside to see group names. Do you/How do you expose the members within such group?.

*Who or what holds the flag/variable that considers an instanced locked?
if only a group leader can change the insance status do you make a group leader entity or does every player table carry around a leader flag/var?

I find it funny when people make this link where if your not raiding your casual.
