I've been trying to put a list of the most common playstyles there are for MMO gamers and this is what I have come up with so far.

  • Collector - This is the person who tries to collect all of something; whether it is all the "rare" pets in a game, rare suits of armor, etc. If it can be put on a checklist, they want it.
  • Completionist - This is the person that has to do it all even if it doesn't really benefit them anymore; such as finishing "green” quests or doing a dungeon crawl just because they have never visited that area even if it won’t obtain them any tangible benefits.
  • Crafter - This is the person who wants to create things more than anything else.
  • Explorer - This is the person who wants to see the world; every little nook and cranny.
  • Ganker - Not a PvPer but someone who likes to kill other players when there is almost no chance for the ganker to lose.
  • Helper – This is the person who is always online helping others finish their quests, getting them gear, even if it doesn't benefit them at all.
  • Hunter – This is the person who lives for the hunt; looking for a worthy target that can give them a challenge. Unlike the PvPer, a Hunter will hunt down and purse their opponent, waiting for the right moment to ambush or strike.
  • Leader – This is the person who is always organizing others; whether it is groups, raids, or entire guilds.
  • Loremaster - Unlike a roleplayer, a loremaster does not "get into character" often in game; instead they just love to learn the lore and backstory of the game.
  • Master Looter – This is the person who desires virtual items and will run a dungeon crawl hundreds of times just to get that one particular item.
  • Powergamer - This is the person who has to "win" the game in the fastest time possible. To them, fun is in winning and the path is just a means to an end.
  • PvPer - PvPers live to compete; they continually want to test their skills against other living, breathing and most importantly, skilled opponents.
  • Raider - This is the person who loves to do dungeon crawls.
  • Reroller – This is the person that tries out a variety of different character types and has a hard time sticking to just one character.
  • Roleplayer - This is the person who creates a persona within the game and truly tries to live like that individual while in the confines of the game.
  • Socializer - This is the person who, more than anything, just wants to hang out with their friends and make new ones.
  • Theorycraft – Tries to determine the “best” way to build a character.

Granted, some people would fit into multiple categories. If one appears to be missing, please let me know. Or if there is a better name (or terminology) for an existing one, let me know that too.

The game has had its issues over the years but what MMO hasn't? They are quite complex beasts to create and maintain and there are some amazingly inventive and resourceful players out there... now if only their power could be harnessed for good!

With that said, whenever we (Stray Bullet Games) has learned about these issues and can repro the steps that cause the issue, we implement a fix as quickly as possible. People who have not been playing the game recently think this was all a new issue but this was primarily an issue dealt with over six months ago. Much of the released information was already known and gathered during our investigation. The findings of that resulted in the fixing of various bugs and exploits in subsequent patches. (LINK)

SBG Employees did not give out any special items. With this upcoming patch, we have also removed the ability to create unique items. The only way items will be introduced to these new worlds will be either through adventuring and minion crafting. Any and all unique items will now go through the patch process.

Now, is Shadowbane the game for you? That's not for me to decide. Some people love it, some hate it. Does it have cutting edge graphics? No. Is it a technological terror that has no issues whatsoever? No. But if you love Player vs Player combat, in-depth character building, and playing with groups of people, then you may very well find it to be the game for you.

In fact, read this and if you like how the game sounds, try it out. Its a free game and the only thing you have to "lose" is some harddrive space.

Would they really get real, true, and useful information by saying "Hey, I'm the Community Manager for..."?  I am guessing they play the game as a normal player and listen to the general tone :)

Taera is absolutely correct. I log onto my "official" toon every so often and rarely hear the real story from players at that point. Believe it or not, most players are actually quite nice and when they "see" someone in an official capacity, they tend to tell them how much they are enjoying the game (unless you happen to catch them right when a bug or something occurs that upsets them ;) ).  I "lurk" a lot in-game, in forums, on IRC, and even in a few guild Vents as normal players and I get a lot better information then.

I believe this is a misconception that many players have that it is only the leadership of "uber" guilds (ie, guilds with a lot of members) that are being pegged as Community Influencers. Now, granted these are one of your CIs because these are people who obviously do influence the decisions and perceptions of numerous players but these are hardly the only CIs that community managers use. Many CIs are influencers without even realizing it. There are some players who are highly sociable and just happen to take to large segments of a servers population. I believe it was Alan (I was on the panel to, but I guess I hid too well between Troy and Paul ) who said that they had run statistics on a particular server and it came out to be about 10 players who mostly people on a server interacted with (as far as talking).

Community Managers (and other sections) look for a wide range of CIs. Yes, Guild Leaders are one of them and it is usually the more established guilds that are approached (established as in showing they aren't a PUG of the month, not because they have 50+ members). But I can't think of a CM that I know (and I know quite a lot of them) that don't also look for the CIs on the forums, CIs that run popular blogs or media (for example, GU Comics can be considered a CI), or people who are "webfamous" in the game. There are many types of CIs and most CMs use a wide range of them.

And one thing to also remember is that Community Influencers are but ONE of the outlets used to get a pulse on a community.

I don't think you will see a single press release or announcement that has come from Stray Bullet Games, LLC that says we are the creators of Shadowbane. I should know, I write them myself.  We do take credit for the development and support of Shadowbane. We've been doing it for many years now.

Now, perhaps I am misreading things. We all know that sometimes it is hard to construe our thoughts or emotions over a forum. So much easier to do in person.  And, personally, I do not believe this is the place to talk about things. You are more than welcome to call me if you wish to discuss this further.

Sadly, while Stray Bullet may claim to be the developers of Shadowbane, only  four of the original team are employed there (one junior server programmer, a writer, community manager, and associate producer).  Stray Bullet formed after UbiSoft closed the Austin office that was once Wolfpack Studios, however almost all the original team have moved on to other companies and projects.  The only thing Stray Bullet can lay claim to is some life support on the live version of SB.  None of the people quoted in the press release are listed in the SB credits since they didn't work on the game.  The vast majority of the original developers, including the founders, reside at Kingsisle Entertainement.

I guess it depends on your interpretation of "development". While it is true that most of the original team on Shadowbane is gone, the development of the game hardly stopped upon its launch. In fact, many would argue that is when it had begun. I have been working on the title for almost seven years now, longer than any other employee and twice that of any of the founders. There is not a single employee, past or present, that knows more about the game than I do. We all know that Shadowbane had a problematic launch and had issues to be addressed which have taken a phenominal amount of work to do while maintaining it as a live product.

I'll be the first to give the respect and support of those who had the original "vision" of the game but to say that the current team that is now known as Stray Bullet Games didn't work on the game is ludicrious. It is the current team (as well as fantastic other co-workers such as Ubiq, Lietgardis, Tangent, etc) that has helped correct many of the core issues of the technology and brought the design of the game into focus.

Personally, I think it is quite petty of you to post such a thing on a forum basically to promote your own company. No one here has ever dismissed the idea that you and a few of the others at King's Isle had a major hand in bringing Shadowbane into a reality nor have we said we are the creators of the game. I was quite specific in saying that Stray Bullet Games learned its lessons by  "
developing and supporting Shadowbane". I personally will have been doing so for seven years as of May 31st of this year.
Let me go a little more into what Sachant said.  The original Wolfpack, which I was a part of, was a team with more passion than I've seen in most if not all MMO Dev Companies, but very little game development experience much less MMO Development (and MMOs are infinitely much more complex).  Not only did we undertake a huge task in making a game where we gave players so much freedom... we also created the engine it runs upon from scratch instead of using middleware. More than likely, we should of used more middleware and brought some more experienced MMO programmers on the team earlier on.  That whole 20/20 hindsight thing.

The Wolfpack Team that has been around since the acquisition (by Ubisoft well after launching the product), while retaining some of the original members (such as myself, Meridian, and Nazgul) was mainly made up of individuals with previous game and MMO development experience. Most of them now work at Stray Bullet Games.

Will SBG amount to anything? Obviously only time will tell but looking at the drive, experience, and talent in the company, I would say it's highly likely. As I pointed out, this isn't a "green" team, this is a highly seasoned team with the contacts and experience needed to create a game.

The one thing I didn't like about my review is that I could of written about 10 more pages... at least! Tracy gave Sachant and I a wealth of information and the game sounds extremely cool. Hopefully Tracy remembers me when it comes time for Beta Testing, heh.

Sure, Africa sounds like a great MMO and I hope it gets launched, because I'd enjoy its innovation.  I like to support unique games.  But you guys present zero evidence for some of these claims.  This is a new team, very academic in training, and frankly its a title that's really really early.  I don't understand how you can award innovation for a game that doesn't even have screenshots yet.  Come on guys.  This feels wierd.  Thanks.

First let me point out that it won "Most Innovative (Concept)".  There was no secret made that the game is still in the design stage and that it will be sharing technology with it's sister game is a big boon.  Will it actually materialize?  Only time will tell.  Being a developer myself (and around for some time), I can easily see how Rapid Reality does have a lot going for them.  Not even considering the work ethic and passion of those working at RR, the kind of publicity and responses they are getting will greatly help out. Granted they will feel a lot of the pressures of development... and we all know how much fun initial betas usually are... but having a great support base helps a lot.  Granted, I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but my money is on this game easily making the light of day.  The interesting part will see how welll the designs go from paper to practice.

Poncho,

You will find players like this in all MMOs. I have not played one yet where things like this do not occur. Obviously, due to mechanics and features, the tactics they use change but I have yet to find an MMO without "Griefers". You had a bad experience. I had bad experiences in a variety of games. I remember the first time I was "PKed" in Ultima Online. It sucked. But I continued playing.

You stopped playing Shadowbane and I can understand you doing so and not saying you should give it another chance. But there are two things you should realize: (1) All MMOs have these kinds of players and (2) If Shadowbane goes away (and that is an if, I do not know what will happen with it), where do you think those players will go next?

You receive the entire game, to include Rise of Chaos and Throne of Oblivion. If you have an old account, you just need to deactivate and then reactivate it.

Can either yourself or Ashen confirm or deny Shadowbane 2?

I'm going to be lame and just copy'n'paste what I wrote on my website:

As we all know, there is a rumor about Shadowbane 2 and, as I have already stated, I cannot really confirm or deny this rumor. If we were doing it, I have already learned my lesson not to shoot myself in the foot and announce such a project too early. Shadowbane had a huge following YEARS before it was released and it caused a lot of angst in the pre-beta community. I personally would not want to go through that again. If we were not doing Shadowbane 2, I wouldn’t want to say it because it doesn’t mean we won’t, just means we are not at the moment. Either way, as a person who deals in community, I’d rather wait till I’m given the official okay to state things either way. So, for those of you who keep asking me “off the record”… there is your reply :D

And HoldMe, I do my best to read all feedback regarding Shadowbane. MMOs are evolving creatures that are never perfect when shipped (or else there would be no need for patchers). Getting information and seeing things from the player's perspective is vital in making the correct changes and in addressing what should be addressed first.

I do actually have a question that perhaps you could answer me about the SB community. How would you describe the community of players in regards to the game and pvp? Would you say that they're largely hardcore pvp'ers? (I imagine they probably have to be) Do you find them to be somewhat elitist regarding outsiders and newbies? How is the community regarding random PKing and griefing? I guess that's a bunch of questions. I know I would find the answers helpful and hopefully they would give new players an idea of what to expect when coming into the game, so they have a better idea if the game is right for them or not.

Oh, I more than realize there are people out there who don't like me. And I can respect that... there are people in the world I don't like :D It was just your reason for not liking me caught me off-guard since I had no idea what you were talking about.

Anywho, as to your question. The Shadowbane Community really isn't any different than any other MMO community. I'm a huge MMO player... in addition to Shadowbane (and yes, I do play it), I also play World or Warcraft, Everquest 2 (use to play the original), Lineage II, City of Heroes, and Dark and Light (beta). I've also played Dark Ages of Camelot (and reactivate it every few months), checked out Ferentus, Horizons, Ultima Online, and probably a few more I am forgetting now. They all have their hard cases but they also have their very helpful individuals.

The difference in the Shadowbane Community, though, is it is a full PvP game and many of the "board warrioring" matches evolve into in-game wars. Talk too much smack to someone and that person and their entire guild (if not nation) may be dropping a Bane Stone (what we use to initiate sieges) on their city.

So yes, there are some mouthy people in the game. There are some who have the elitist complex (and some who do and don't deserve to have that attitude). There are also some great guilds there who are there just for the fun of it. Others who are there for the lore. Some who are there just to help out. It's made up of a myriad of personalities.

Is it any more hostile and immature than other MMO communities? No. But they are quite defensive about their game (which is humorous because, to them, it's okay for them to bad mouth it... just not others).

Ahhh, okay. That makes things a little more clear. Actually, the issue he had was nothing to do with me. SBVault was an affiliate of the Vault Network. I worked on SBVault and was offered the position to lead up the site after being on it for a few months. Personally, it didn't matter to me either way, I was working for free and had been working as a site manager on XRGaming prior to this (when I played UO). I just happen to like to collect information on games I play and publish news and interesting details about them I come across (which lead to my current job).

But, I point out the fact that SBVault was owned by the Vault Network for a reason. I wouldn't have to threaten to former site manager because the site belonged to IGN (the url was sbvault.ign.com). Furthermore, I don't make a habit (as in never have) of threatening people to sue them. I am not a lawyer nor practice armchair legalese. Outside of ICQ or IRC, I never talked to him and actually did not know (until you just posted this) that he was that young and that he lived with his mother.

Anyhow, sorry about your friend but perhaps he was just taking the aggression out on me because I was offered the job. If I wanted to lead a site, I would of just made my own.

FYI, there is already a (long) thread on this topic in this very forum:

I have no respect for Ashen Temper (considering he got his job by threatening to sue a 14 year old kid), or this game.

Do you have me confused with someone else? I mean, I don't mind if peope dislike or hate me, I don't tend to sugar-coat my replies when someone is doing something they should not... but at least hate me for something real. I have never threated to sue anyone, much less a 14 year old kid. So please, tell me this story...

I really am wondering. Would love to hear the story behind this...

Just FYI, there is a long thread on this at the The Pub at MMORPG.COM:
