Because it's a staple of PVP games. Even the races in WoW are distinct enough to identify on the battlefield.

I'm personally OK with either one or the other. THe big problem for me is that early-access people (myself included) can now create characters of any race in any faction, but if friends of yours pick up the game post-launch, they're locked into their race's respective factions.

So, you hate the game and are hoping that it sold poorly.  Got it.  This is a silly game to play; if it was popular you'd still hate it.

And there is no meaningful data to look at, since it is challenging to track digital sales and MMO companies are traditionally very reluctant to release sales totals.  Zen isn't even public, if I remember correctly, so there is even less reason for them to do so than is the norm.  And they haven't released the game on consoles, which is another major market for them.

I dont hate any game, that is irrational. I just didnt like what ZoS did and is still doing to people theyre takingmoney from and trying to extract more money from.

I dont like cash grabbing money whores who try and rape people off the name of an IP and put out a game so horribly broken a large percentage of the player base cant go a few hours without something happening to them that makes them want to pull their hair out.

But I am happy that the sales numbers look like crap because it might deter other companies from doing the same. I have said that all along. I remember people spouting that this game might sell 2 or 3 million copies. I figured with the IP and despite the problems it might sell a million. But yes I am glad to see, at least on the surface, it didnt come close to that number.

At first people were pissed about the sub, but some could deal with it, ZoS made their speech and it was doen with. Then people were pissed about stuff getting locked behind a pre order or pay wall with the race and the faction unlock 'perks' to the different versions and whether you pre ordered or not. But people go over that. Then more and more people got to experience the betas and they saw first hand what the game was like. Many still tried to excuse it saying it wasnt the release version. Well the game has been out almost 3 weeks now and if anything it is probably running worse now than it did in the betas.

How many more strikes does a game and company need to show people what it was from the start?

Games that have been in development 5 or 6 years and had the money thrown at it this game has had shouldnt look like this one does. People can use all the same lame and tired excuses about every other failed game to come down the pike they want  but that proves the point even more ESo is a failure, it just hasnt been out long enough yet to confirm it.

But if they didnt sell 500K copies of the game then IMO that is a failure in and of itself. Everything else is just icing on the failure cake. Because I dont know of any AAA MMO that didnt sell more than 500K copies even back when there werent nearly as many gamers around as there are now.

Where are all these game-breaking bugs? I've logged about 5 days playtime on my character so far, level 36, and I've run into ONE bug that was actually pretty easy to fix user-side.

Cash shop money-hungry... what? Yeah, two editions of the game, just like other MMOs. One horse up for sale on their site, just like a lot of other MMOs as well (actually, a lot less than what other MMOs sell), no in-game cash shop window or plans to integrate one. This cash shop crap is a blatant lie.

Have you even played the game? I see healthy player numbers, virtually no one complaining in chat, haven't heard anyone talk about not being able to log in (and I've tried through three different proxies by accident, from various locations around the world). Every public dungeon I go into has players everywhere (not bots, players), and the economy is actually really healthy, possibly healthier than if it had a server-wide AH.

I sense that you're mostly pissed about the fact that a game costs money to play. That's fine, but there's no need to go off on nonsensical tirades and blind attacks because of it.

Also, if you're going to use VGcharts as a reference, take the numbers into consideration: ESO sold 253k copies according to this site, yet was #1 on Amazon's best seller list for games (and no.2, and 3, and 4... imperial edition, boxed standard, boxed imperial) for two weeks straight, only offset once by a free DLC for saints row IV. Same deal with green man gaming: top seller for over a week.

Look at titanfall in the VGchartz lineup. It's known to have sold well over a million copies before it even launched on the 360, yet this site says it only sold 95,865... that's quite a large margin of error. Statistically speaking, that means that ESO sold WAAAAAY more units than VGchartz is reporting on. Hell, on the "weekly" spread it outsold Infamous: Second Son twice over.

If you want to try slamming a game for it's business model, remember what it costs to make these stupid things. Pay up or shut up, because no one is forcing you to buy it.

Furthermore, if you're gonna slam a game for it's sales figures, make sure you have all your facts straight.

I play League so... not as great as one would hope but it's steadily picking up. I actually had to spawn camp last night.

There are more players on Empire at the moment, and the server has been pretty active. I've seen players flitting around all over the place.

Title says it all. I downloaded the game again out of curiosity once they announced the release of the subscription server. I had played in closed and open beta but the cash shop absolutely ruined it for me. After a few days of having played on the subscription server, however, I can safely say that Allods Online is the game it was trying to be all along!

Levelling is faster, more XP from kills, no freaking incense or curses, no item shop, everything earned with reasonable amounts of ingame gold.

Come back to Allods!

1) it cost over 2mill USD to make

2) the cash shop, although shitty and terribly planned, has still pulled in thousands without a doubt, so let's add another 20-30,000 USD to that

You'd have to give gPotato more than three million dollars to get the rights to Allods, and that's if they're willing to sell. For a sure-thing buy you'd need to offer them something to the tune of 6-8mill USD. You're not just buying the initial game, you're buying the return on investment that they would be losing by selling it to you.

Now, if you're so angry about gPotato having payment issues, try using a different payment system? I know that with google wallet it took them two days, but with a visa card it's practically instant.

I've played all the big box MMOs, from EQ2 to WoW to VG to Rift and GW2, but I can't find that sense of adventure that Vanguard once instilled in me.

I tried retruning to VG, but with recent patches and the community exploding, it feels like I've missed the mark and am permanently stuck in the "good old days" mindset.

So, tell me, is there an MMO out there that offers a better sense of immersion, adventure, and community? Something preferrably fantasy.

That depends very strongly on how it's implemented.  If you have a separate texture for each triangle, you're doing it wrong.  It's pretty easy to wrap a single texture continuously across thousands of triangles in cases where it's appropriate.

Yeah, it's called UV mapping. You can't have a 3D object without it. Texture loading and polygon rendering aren'y issues that contribute to smaller areas, because you can always reference level of detail meshes that are lower and lower poly the farther away from an object you get. The textures are also usually set up with "mip maps" that filter the texture down to 1x1 pixel so that they don't look odd when seen from far away, and it also reduces the amount of space needed by a texture relative to it's distance from the player camera.

Look, I don't make great money, but I still work. Because of this, I can afford to buy a new game when it comes out every once a while (GW2, TSW were my latest purchases), and even on occasion I'll re-sub to an older MMO that i'd wandered away from like EQ2 or WoW.

But it feels like most people who post on have absolutely 0 money. Why else would there be so many people complaining about a game being "truly free", or people blasting games for charging for the client, or even people just passively trolling a game by saying "i'll play it when it goes F2P".

Could it be, perhaps, that the reason for all this division in the MMORPG community is because you guys are just being cheap bastards? An MMO sub costs 15$ a month. If you make an average of even 1400$ a month and you've paid your bills there's probably still 15$ lying around somewhere before your next pay cycle.

Let's look at GW2 (since it's the new kid on the block so why not?): people are openly complaining that Anet is charging 60$ for a box product with no sub fee. Sure, we have loads of MMOs out there that are f2p now with a free client download, but they're working on a different business model. They will gouge your wallet with weekly deals, progression requirements, endgame raiding gear, etc. GW2, by comparison, does none of that.

Or, let's look at the f2p conversion of something like EQ2. This is a game with a lot of history, and a seemingly unending amount of content. SOE, with a healthy sub base, decided to make the game f2p with an admittedly stunted model. Nonetheless, you can experience everything in the game up until the previous expansion's max level. No quest restrictions, some spell restrictions in terms of training, and some gear restrictions, but are you really hoping that someone is going to offer you a full game for free and just hope that you'll spend money in the cash shop?

I know that a lot of the venom spewed regarding games and publishers is usually misplaced hormonal anger or something equating to that, but lately it's just started to seem like this community is just a bunch fo cheap asses who believe that everything needs to be catered to them for free.

Also, if you're not paying for something and you don't even play the game in question, WHY ARE YOU BITCHING ABOUT IT?

I'm on freakin' Borlis Pass. How do you think I feel?

Aw come on, GW2 is a fantastic and fun game but who doesn't love a good old-fashioned dungeon stomp every once in a while?

Not trolling, but curious. I've played most of the major AAA MMOs that have come out since WoW. Which other one wasn't a clone to some degree?

So no, your right.  GW2 isnt the savior of MMO's,  if anything this pushes MMO's even more into the realms of 'cash machine product' than it ever was.

Thats why I wont buy GW2, not because its a good or bad game, but because it sets a standard for a disturbing and worrying future of online games.

I guess you could say I dont support what ANET are trying to do, under the disguise of a game and massive hype.

Correct me if I'm wrong (groggy from a morning of meetings), but are you saying that an MMO must charge a sub to be worth a box price?

I think he's actually just saying that he doesn't want to pay for anything and that developers should be happy that people are playing their games.

Little does he know, the world doesn't work like that.

Yeah that's a horrible pitch, and I'm from the gaming industry. You can't say "I'll bring 20 million players to your doorstep" without any sort of concept to give or any prior experience.

There's no such thing as someone who gets paid to spout ideas all day in video games. Everyone working on a project is creative in one way or another and has both excellent and stupid gameplay ideas every day, and THEY know how to impliment them.

I had so much lag i couldmt enjoy the game. Game lag and server lag. My computer is a bomb. 16 gigs of ram a Geforce 680 extremely good memory SSD. So basicaly the only reason i could have a decent experience in the past week is because 1- their server hardware sux 2- the game codes are bad and the game cant run smoothly at all time because of the codes behing poorly designed. / I realy doubt that at like 2pm during week daus that the server is overun.

No matter how good the game is and no matter how fun the classes are at the end of the day free or not Vanguard will remain what it is, a very Badly coded game

The game is bad optimized compared to others UE3 games but u should be getting 60 fps with your setup

but indeed the game need better coding ,TERA uses the same engine has better graphics and is less hardware demanding than Vanguard

plus they need better server perfomance ,players from US getting 150-200ms+lag spikes in a server with less than 1k players is unacceptable today.

Firstly, it's UE 2.5, the same engine used to run Unreal Tournament 2005, not UE3, which would obviously be much better optimized for current machines.

Second, with the amount of crap that Ringside posted, he should not be having that problem or he's running way too much in the background. I have a setup about half as impressive his alleged computer and I get full FPS with no lag except when switching chunks. And this is with absolutely everything in the game maxed out.

Furthermore, TERA uses UE3 but they also severely altered it to fit into an MMO and get it to their liking. Comparing a game that launched years ago on a previous version of the engine to a brand-new, optimized for the latest hardware version is kind of like saying "well, my motorbike can go 60mph, so why can't my shitty bicycle?". It's shortsighted and, honestly, just stupid. Learn what you're complaining about before you try to make uneducated and completely off-base and invalid complaints about a game's architecture.

I work in games. I do this shit every day, all day. Engines are touchy things, and if gamers would actually shut up for one fucking second and LEARN about the engine they're about to rag on, instead of just saying SOME CODER FUCKED IT ALL UP, we'd all be in a much happier place.

Lastly, Ringside, you're a complete liar. There is absolutely no way that a UE 2.5 game would run that badly on a computer that has those kinds of specs, unless you crammed that GPU, SSD, and RAM into something that's running a freakin' sempron or atom CPU. You do not have a computer with those kinds of specs and if you actually do and I am wrong, then you're still an idiot because I have to run top-end graphics software on a machine barely half that nice to MAKE a freaking game. There is no possible way that a computer like yours would turn Vanguard into a slideshow, aside from registry fuckups of your own accord, a horrible undetected virus, or you've got so many youtube and porn windows running in the background that you've oversaturated your RAM and brought your machine to a grinding halt.

The restrictions on the classes is whats keeping me from playing.

I'm sorry but the class/race restrictions in this case are intended as a trial.  You are NOT restricted, up to level 20, on any combination of class/race.  If after 20 levels (out of 55) you still can't find it in yourself to purchase access to the class/race combo you have picked, if in fact you still find yourself attracted to the game, then I'm sorry but you sir are a cheapskate. Especially considering you can purchase access to each class/race individually for far less than the total cost of $15 a month over the cost of a year or more.  F2P does not, and has never been, a totally free ride.  It just means that to a certain extent a portion of the game is in fact free to include initial access.

It has nothing to do with being a cheapskate, the game is just not worth spending money on imo. F2P and trial are two different things, pick one and stick with it.

Well your opinion is actually pretty invalid if you're not even going to try it.

Firstly, turn on character occlusion in the options.

Second, you're describing New Targonor, which everyone agrees is just too f***ing big. The game was originally intended to have a lot more players than it ended up having, hence giant cities like Targonor or Ahgram. I have confidence that with the recent F2P relaunch you'll see more and more people popping up everywhere. I can attest personally that the population of the game has picked up tremendously in the past month.

I'm seeing a lot of misinformation being posted on this site regarding Vanguard's F2P model.

- NO, you don't have to pay money to wear ALL gear, just yellow / orange gear (read: raid drops, rare armor, or stuff like hunter's league armor and weapons which take a week or so to get). This kind of gear is HARD to come accross until the later levels, and at that point you should be invested enough to either sub, or tough it out til the end for raid drops and pay the freakin 10$ for a game you've played to level cap for FREE.

- NO, it is not as buggy as people are saying. I honestly don't know how people are getting such atrocious performance. I'm running a single geforce 460 GTX SE with 8gb RAM and a 3.3ghz dual-core AMD Phenom. I'm running off of a horrible AT&T U-verse connection. At maxed settings I get no hitching, lagging, rubberbanding, or anything of that sort.

- The purpose of Vanguard is NOT like other MMOs. You "veteran MMO players" who keep complaining about games not being worlds in which ti immerse yourselves anymore, why do you suddenly turn around and say "what good is a world to explore if I can't wear my raid armor?" Do you have ANY idea how long it takes to get to max level? Bringing me to my next point.

- This is NOT a game that starts at level cap. Gameplay in VG starts at level 1. Progression is one of the best elements in this game, combined with three different spheres in which to grow (you can do any and all of them if you want): crafting, diplomacy, and normal adventuring. I have been playing on and off for three years and I'm still only level 31 on my current toon. My old toon on Xeth was wiped out when he was level 28.

- Housing and boats rely on crafters, and crafting in this game is FAR beyond any other game's system, even EQ2.

- No progression spheres are locked out to a free player. Want to be a level 50 craftsman? Go nuts. Want to run around Telon with a poofy hat and gold-tipped cane as a diplomat? start talking. Want to kill things til level 50? you know what to do.

- Vanguard offers the ENTIRE game map and quest content for free. Nothing is cut off, and Vanguard has one of the biggest land masses in MMO history. Rent a flying mount at a starter zone and you'll very quickly understand what I am talking about.

- Housing is reserved for Gold members for a simple reason: There are a LIMITED number of plots for players to buy and settle on. if you offered housing free for everyone, Telon would run out of housing plots very quickly. Yes, housing and guild halls are persistent, not instanced, and exist in the game world. For example, I have a house right on the other side of a level 30 dungeon in Qalia.

- Boats and mounts are FOR EVERYONE. You do NOT have to buy a boat in the cash shop, since a lot of crafters also make them. Granted, it might be expensive in in-game gold but you still don't have to pay for it. Mounts are very cheap at early levels.

- The community in Vanguard is, bar none, the best I have ever seen. You never see someone getting blasted or told "just google it" in main chat. People are helpful.

Everyone here is so angry it seems. Everyone in VG is waiting happily for the F2P transition and you're all here bitching about how VG is, to paraphrase-quote some of you, "the ugliest and worst game ever made".

I know it's a matter of personal opinion, but many players still believe that VG is the diamond in the rough. It has some of the best old-school PVE quests and you don't even realize you are on a "Kill X quest" because you're too busy exploring and staying alive. It also has a harsh death penalty, completely instance-free dungeons / housing / cities, a gigantic game world with lots of travel, an incredible crafting system, diplomacy (which I never really got into but more power to those who have), and so much more.

All you "old-timers" who complain about there not being any games left to cater to the hardcore: why aren't you stoked for VG's relaunch? Sure, it doesn't have FFA, but it's still one of the deepest, most challenging, and most rewarding MMORPGs out there.

Basically, all of y'all moaning about there not being any more "game worlds" or places in which to immerse yourself: we've been in Telon this whole time, wtf have you been?

your problems matter.
