Although, the graphics look gorgeous, and a friend of mine has been pitching this game to me, I have some questions.

1) Is this one of those Anime styled games?

2) Is this one of those Cutesy Tootsie games, i.e. everyone is cute, good looking, and has all these little cute little pets and stuff?

3) Does it have typical Asian themes/Anime themed combat with characters jumping in the air in combat with oversized weapons etc?

4) is it a WoW clone?

5) Is it a grind?

6) Can you solo?

As you all know, I have a love/hate relationship towards WoW.

However, I have played almost every MMORPG released since 1998, and was playing WoW at initial release.

After all these years, I can tell you that the major reason WoW is still the King of the Hill is due to the following.

Because WoW came out way before all of the existing MMOs except EQ1, many many players over the years have developed characters and in some cases several characters all the way from level 1 to level 90. There is a huge time investment. Thus, even though players like myself, who really wish a ground breaking MMO would come out, all the new MMO's always are in some way shape or form a WoW clone to one degree or another.

This causes several things to happen:

1) Long time WoW players experience nothing new or different in a significant way to cause them to give up WoW for the new MMORPG. Although, these WoW players usually do not renew their subscription with WoW while playing the new MMO, most veteran WoW players do not usually renew at more than a month to 3 months anyway, as there is just not enough for a well versed level 90 to do except run the same raids over and over again grinding for gear, same for PvP. Despite that, they see the new MMO as nothing different. Thus, the new MMO is abandoned after a month or 2 as same old same old and no reason to abandon or play your level 90 WoW toons less.

2) The subscription for WoW becomes a plus for Blizzard....for not only is there a time investment, but a money investment for WoW players. For WoW Players are loathe to abandon the WoW investment of time and money for any MMO that does not blow them away. In teh end, the new MMO makes money off initial release, a month or 2 of sub time, and if F2P maybe some cash shop purchase profit, but in the end its not much. Also, the fact that if you decide to play WoW along with another MMO, that WoW sub hangs over your head...and if you do not play WoW enough during the same time you are trying out other MMOs, you kind of...feel guilty? Your money spent and not being used?

3) The power of the WoW clone defeats all new MMO's to some degree. I call this the "Fonzie Factor"...Back in the mid 1970's a sitcom came out that broke the sitcom genre, it was called "Happy Days" and was loosely based on a great movie that had come out previously called 'American Graffiti". Well, there was a character named 'Fonzie" that started out as a cameo character and not a main character, i.e. did not appear in every episode. The combination of his flair andthe fact that he was not in every episode created fans to eagerly anticipate his next appearence. Unfortunately, as with everything on network TV, the producers recognizing Fonzies popularity made him a regular character, then increased the number of time he would appear in each episode, then increased the amount of time he was in each episode, then making entire episodes revolve around him, and eventually, the whole series revolved around him. By then, fans were "Fonzie Saturated" and the series failed. THIS, is what developers and producers of MMOs do every single time they release a new MMO...they clone WoW over and over again, to the point where we are WoW saturated...just like Fonzie. The BEST example of this is "Wild Star".....as despite even to myself as being new and unique...its still the same old same old WoW formula.

In conclusion, there really is no reason for the large WoW player base to leave WoW 100% for another MMO, or moreover even share WoW time with another MMO. As long as game studios continue to base their MMO designs on WoW to some degree or another, they just dig their own holes. Where is the imagination? Where is the creativity or ingenuity?

I can easily see in some cases where great Devs come up with non WoW clones, only to have some high mucky mucky poo poo their ideas because "WoW is the mose successful MMO, they obviously are doing whats right, therefore we must do the same, and of course do it better, which will make players come to our game and make us king of the hill"....

NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

Please Devs and Prods...stop the madness!

Both games put you into a position where you MUST endure LONG QUE'S to raid (WoW) or do dungeons (WS) to get good gear.

Not that there is an issue doing dungeons or raids, it just the wait times in QUE which are forever in both and worse in WS because its just there normal dungeons.

Also, WS goes to one extreme and WoW the other in questing.

For example, in WoW you must stay in a certain area or DIE...and the Timeless Isle is a boring grind zone

In WS you can find a ton of quests that keep the flow going, but you can get overwhelmed and burnt out because the gear blows.

The only time WoW was fun, was during the questing in Lich King and before bots took over PvP.

In WS, it was fun at the start and then quickly got stale.

Dont these game designers ever learn?

First off, anyone who knows me from these forums, knows I do not particularly like MMOs anymore.

I have a love hate relationship with WoW, I hate cartoony and cutsey tootsie graphics, and I avoided Wild Star up until the final beta, even avoiding reading anything about it.

I also despise subscriptions.

Yet, I played the final beta, open beta, and plan on subbing to Wild Star.

Here is why I love the game that has all the things I hate in it.

1) ITS FUN

2) Not a WoW clone...the character graphics are not like WoW, they are a combo of Orcs Must Die and some characters from the old "Loony Toons" "Bug Bunny" cartoons, and the only thing similar to WoW is some of the landscapes, which blow WoWs away.

3) There is a ton to do...I mean a TON and if you some how run out of things to do, just run off in any direction and you will find something!

4) PvP is so different than WoW, more complex, i.e. moodie masks and the mechanics to their spawning and when you can grab them, also dont expect anyone to speed hack across the landscape or any other type of speed buff when carrying a flag/moodie mask.

5) Zerg? What Zerg? I see the teams that win have one really goodplayer guarding the masks, while the rest of team grabs masks, its called TEAMWORK....organizationand teamwork wins.

6) Anyone who claims to have played this game and says its a WoW clone has never played it. Its fun, challenging, and can appease the casual gamer up thru hard core gamers.

7) Also it has lasting value..unlike Elder Scrolls which does offer a nice relaxing immersive game, with very interesting crafting, it still wears thin quickly. Not so with Wild Star, there is no unfun grind like parts of WoW or shallowness as in ESO.

Wild Stars only flaw is the starting areas...they do not do justice to the game and even almost scared me away from Wild Star. If you can suffer thru the starting areas, which some indeed do like, the game is totally different once you leave them and just keeps getting better and better every level. By level 15 its a totally different game in teh major cities.

Watch all the videos on the wild star site, especially War Plots #2.

Also, housing is the most awesome experience that no one can touch....

Remember..I hate MMOs, subs....but I really like Wild Star.

First off, I love the Elder Scrolls universe, it's games and also ESO...

Obviously, ESO was made using a "cookie cutter" approach, i.e. reuse of objects etc, which you can see in how many interiors look exactly the same, etc, as well as in other areas of the game and its aspects.
All of which is a minor nuance and to a degree understandable.

However, where this becomes an issue is in one of the reused quest models; that being the many quests which require players to STOP what they are required to do in 90% of the game, that being... killing monsters.

Thus, it should be no surprise, that when encountering one of these quests, to see a large amount of players waiting for the monster to spawn and then praying that other players not familiar with the quest, will not come by randomly and kill the spawn before it can run its quest mechanics.

The result is, 90% of the players who do not know about the quest, kill the spawn and break the quest.
Desperate spamming by the questing players pleading for other players to not kill the spawn, to allow it to do its thing...as part of the quest mechanic required to advance the quest....usually are not successful.
As unfortunately, many players are not watching chat close enough to notice the pleas, and many turn zone chat off due to the gold spammers and growing infantile discussions, but moreover the other players just do not know about the quest.

The end result is frustrated and angry questers who feel everyone is either dumb,  a jerk or griefer, when they kill such a spawn.
Well, that is true for a very tiny tiny number of players.
99% of them had no way of knowing...
And thus, the poor design of certain aspects of the game, hurts all the good things in this game.

This was all known in BETA, and nothing was done, and it may be a long long time before such things can be fixed.

Should you complain about such things, you are told that all MMORPGs are like this at release.

The question is why?
The answer is that YOU the player allowed it.

You the player have purchased MMOs since the late 1990s that are released in a form no other major release of other types of games would have been deemed acceptable.
But back in the day, the novelty and want to be with thousands of other players was a desire that caused us to over look such horrible short comings.
Thus, the standard for MMOs are now 1) A poor release and 2) Bugs forever.
This has now carried over into all other types of games beyond MMOs as well.

Maybe it is time, to just say no to games that want you to pay a subscription for unfinished products.
Unfinished not in content or bug fixing, but the BASIC, COMMON SENSE, things that are the back bone of every game, i.e. a minimum standard of quality.

Otherwise, as we have seen, quality goes down with every release because developers know that you the player will either accept it, or flame others who do not accept it.

I love ESO, but I will not re-subscribe and fork over more money until I see progress.

Vote with your dollars, if you do, you will see results.
It is just a shame that we have to do this with out beloved Elder Scrolls MMO, and hopefully, by the time our 30 days are up, we can re-subscribe to a high standard of a product worthy of a subscription.

They cannot even get this right:

LOL! I rest my case! You just posted the policy of Zenimax customer service for everything!

"Why do you need to know?"

LOLOLOLOLOL

Based on Zenimax's poor customer service record, they probably banned every account in addition to the cheaters, then could not figure out why NO ONE could log in, so they they decided to perform Maintenance today on a Friday, forgot to post it as emergency maintenance and thus are still scratching their heads trying to figure out the issue ROFLMAO

I predict this wonderful game will lose 90% of its new subscribers from launch day due to Zenimax CS incompetence.

The game will succeed if they ditch Zenimax and get some other company to manage this game.

ZENIMAX SINS:

1) Maintenance several times a week instead of just once a week

2) Horrible maintenance notice, none or very little

3) No distinction between emergency and routine maintenance

4) Maintenance on Fridays and weekends (are they on drugs?)

5) Inaccurate error messages, they use the same one for all issues (permissions) LOL

Why do all the good games get losers as the company's that make and manage them?

GAMES are MADE to MAKE MONEY, not provide a PUBLIC SERVICE to game players!

Geesh!

Yep, they locked out all their customers en masse, forcing them to wait in a endless que that doesnot work, to sub for a game that has the worst customer service, website, forums than any other game.

Even if you sub, its Sunday in NA...so you probably wont get your payment cleared in time to play today because the people who made ESO and run it are idiots.

You cannot even get to the page to buy a subscription!

LOL What FAIL!

I am very close to saying I am done with this game and all subscription games.

Well.....I guess because I really liked this MMORPG it was bound to self implode.

This morning, thousands of subscribers cannot login.

ESO's explaination? Fiasco!

The message is account credentials are wrong....looks like a mass hack of accounts?

As I played over the last few days, I realized something more.  I've grown older since I started playing MMORPG's.  Quite a bit older.  Old enough to call myself an old school gamer.

I grew up in the days when Movies like Conan the Barbarian, Willow, Dragon Slayer, Legend, Lady Hawke, The Beastmaster, King Authur, and countless Mythology movies that were all Top Movie Hits.  Those were the days of High Adventure.  This is what we loved in the old school days of D&D and gaming.

When EQ came out it was like the adventures we got to see in epic high adventure type movies,  soon after we seen EQOA and other games of that genre.   These games appealed to old schoolers, as time moved on, SOE created the monster EQ2 and WoW came out which started a path away from HIgh Adventure.   Then came Age of Conan, a game which was wholely unfinished, and hurt the Old School games, not because it wasn't great, but because of hits horrible launch.

Old schoolers then seen a movment of the MMO industry away from High adventure titles, until LOTRO.  It was the beacon of hope for Old Schoolers, and till this day, both EQ and LOTRO are still strong.   Since then we have seen Movies like Lord of the Rings do really well in theaters and TV series Game of Thrones, which is a #1 hit, which brought a glimmer of hope to my eyes once again, seeing that old school money and instrest is not completely dead!

For many years I felt as though the MMO industry had forgotten that we old schoolers who loved High Adventure still existed in the shadows of many other games.   Then came my greatest hope yet....  ESO.   ESO means more then just another MMO, it represents all the things I loved growing up in High Adventure and what Old School Adventure is like.  ESO has brought that back to us as old schoolers, and gave us a masterpiece we have been waiting for, for a long time.

So when I hear someone whos younger say that ESO sucks, it feel its because they did not grow up in my days.  Where the Music was that of High Adventure, like in movies of Conan the Barbarian or the rest I listed.   To sit back and hear music that inspires high adventure and can tell a story on its own is a truly beautiful art that has been lost over the past decade.  Or a game that can tell a story that gives you the feeling of actually being in a move of the old school day movies.   Its a wonder to be in a game of this quality that is Old School at its heart and is a dream come true, to see the voice overs, the sights in the world that are so real looking that every detail on a building or on the horizon takes you right to High Adventure days.  To me this is the next gen Old School game I have been waiting a decade to see come true!

For that I want to say Thank you Zenimax for not giving up on the Old School players and stayed true to the feeling and immersion of the old school days of High Adventure!!!   I feel there will be a lot of others who feel the same as I do....

I AGREE 100% knotwood!

You wont see WoW type kiddies in this game, as this is a game for true RPG'rs!

As you know...I do not like MMO's, even though I play them, as I feel they are inferior to single player or old fashioned multiplayer.

However, I do enjoy a good PvP system in a MMO, and have played more PvP in MMOs than sometimes PvE.

Also, I do not like monthly subs, nor was I impressed with ESO's ability to bring new things to the MMO table.

I was wrong....

I played PvP for the first time last night, albiet..avoiding some of the problem campaigns where organized guilds over powered the unorganized...is that really a problem?

Regardless, i was in a 100% random group which started with 4 players and within 30 minutes was at least 12 players, and an additional 20-30 other players in other groups.

The map is HUGE......HUGE...with all kinds of terrain features, including Keeps, Farms, Lumber Mills, and tons of other stuff..basically the structures and things you would expect in such a real world setting in RL.

The cool thing is that I am only level 10, and out geared...yet....with the boosts I obtained, I was able to contribute over the course of an hour by killing 3 other players, helping kill several others, and lots of healing to my team.

Only died twice.

The great thing is that the map lends itself to more than just a group or groups, but actual player formed armies!

I swear! if guilds organize and form groups, the potential of massive uber battles on this large battlefield will be incredible.

I also earned 2 pieces of gear, but moreover had a ton of fun.

BAH! Forget about WoWs BGs...this put them to shame big time.

For example, in WoW the largest BG was Alterac valley..one big zerg in which you run with, although you could zerb on this battlefield, organization, tactics, and strategy will in the end win out..the way it should be.

I had really enjoyed Age of Conan's sieges too, but this puts that to shame as well.

Forget LOTRO's battlefields as well, not even close. Warhammer Online...hhhhmmmm huge map one big zerg or nobody (feast or famine)....well that game was abandoned by its Devs after EA bought it, so it dont count.

In the end, might have to cancel my cable TV subscription and use that money towards a sub to ESO.

Also, most importantly...and I cannot stress this enough...this is NOT a game where you will see cartoony, bright clown suits like in WoW or cutesy tootsy stuff like pandas and baby dinosaurs....no it is a more serious atmosphere and more realistic. And MOREOVER, perfect for IMMERSION!

I do not feel I am part of a rat race, it does not feel like a chore or a job, like other MMOs especially WoW.

Ans as you know, the ESO BETA actually made me go back to WoW....not so for the ESO release.

A much much better game, you just have to take time to smell the roses...it is an immersive game.

For example, are you the type that likes to sit in a tower withyour wax candles and research Alchemy?

Well...the way Alchemy is researched will have you mad scientist types drooling....testing, sampling, creating, researching.

So again, if you want a rat race where kiddies are racing to completion avoiding RL to be uber and throw it in your face, then this game is not for you...but..if you have been thirsting for immersion....to get lost in a world, its people and even other players and guilds...I think this game (ESO) just might be it.

After being driven back to WoW after playing in the ESO BETA, I decided to purchase ESO, as I really really want to like this game and give it more of a chance.

Here is my review, after a few days of playing as well as several beta weekends.

THE GOOD:

Beautiful Graphics, better storyline than what was in BETA (it seems), as well as voice acting, smooth release, no lag, no performance issues. I enjoy the combat, being able to dodge manually, block as well, and interupt all based on movement and clicking.

The UI is very intuitive, as are the skill tree's and almost all other menu's.

Interesting story, it helps to take your time and not rush thru, and enjoy the immersion.

Gear upgrades that can be done by yourself is refreshing.

Big world, no competiting for spawns, no grind.

No rat race like WoW, where you feel left behind.

Leveling feels good....takes longer to get and you feel like you acheived something.

THE BAD:

No way to block Gold Spamers...thats right, the gold spammers have arrived and not only thru zone chat, but using /Yell as well, and there seems to be no way to report ot block them, other than remove zone chat and yell from your options.

Some bugs such as werewolves and other spawns just standing there not able to attack or be attacked.

Everyone look the same, not much to make players unique from each other.

In some  areas where mobs of players are all running to the next objective....and thus kind of spoils the mystery...

Also, not really anything new or innovative is being brought to the table MMO wise...

THE UGLY:

The subscription...come on....that went the way of the dinosaurs....

Horses cost over 40K in gold unless you bought the Imperial Edition, which frankly IMHO is a total waste of money.

Kind of lonely....seems very hard to find groups or invite players into one.

CONCLUSION:

It is the Elder Scrolls...which is the only reason I am playing this game.

However, so far I am enjoying the immersion....this is due to the great graphics, great story and voice overs.

Seems release is much better than BETA IMHO....

I have shut off "zone chat" to stay immersed as I am more interested in it as a MMORPG  as opposed to a rat race MMO.

Thus in a nutshell, if you are the type who wants Immersion in your RPG, take your time, enjoy yourself and avoid the MMO rat race, then this game is for you.

Otherwise, as I have learned again....and again....that if a MMO rat race is more suited for you than WoW would be better.

I truly think this game ESO is more of a RPG persons type game.

Found out last Sunday morning I could play much to my surprise.

Yep, and its not like I went in wanting to hate this game, as I love the Elder Scolls series, but felt lonely in a single player game.

This is the other extreme...and without anything new MMO wise within it, I resolved myself to become immersed in the game, the environment, lore, the story...ruins the immersion when you are part of a running herd...and I mean this literally!

It is like someone planned a marathon to run inside a MMO and everyone is all running down the same path and direction!

I hate WoW....yet, this game ESO made me go back and look at WoW, whoch I despise because of how "babyish" WoW looks, and silly Panda's, baby cutsie tootsie pets and stuff...OMG, after ESO, I actually enjoyed WoW for the few hours I played it.

THATS BAD

The GOOD:

Gorgeous graphics, sound track, and great voice acting, Elder Scrolls universe is always a good thing, vast world.

The BAD:

The Story line is kind of bland, the game offers nothing new in the MMORPG genre, also even though the game is still in BETA, it is very close to release and most of the quests depending on what region you are in are still bugged or unplayable.

The UGLY:

As will become quickly apparent, whenever you perform a quest, right from the get go is that you are in a dungeon for example, with dozens of other players all running down the pathways and corridors literally...like a bunch of rats in a maze...no need to use your brain, just look to where the mob of fellow players are running to and you will find what you are looking for. Also, other than the same old barrels, crates, boxes etc etc that you can open and retrieve mundane little items like food, herbs etc, the dungeon environments albeit gorgeous are only eye candy, and as you run with the other players like rats thru a maze you miss most of it, and even if you take the time to examine this beauty, you will find its empty and meaningless with no interaction.

Yes...we all know the game is in BETA, but if this weekends BETA which offered us to play as an Imperial was supposed to get us excited to fork over money...well, it doesnt...its a turn off.

CONCLUSION:

There is nothing in this game that we have not seen in other MMOs, most of which are more interesting and F2P, that would warrant forking over subscription money each month or buying any edition other than the Basic/Standard edition.

Frankly, as much as I do not like World of Warcraft and frown upon Neverwinters pay to win model, ESO sadly makes me want to play those other games I do not like...why? Because simply it is just a pretty wrapper around a boring and rather bland, linear, experience.

If you want a good Elder Scrolls universe experience play Skyrim instead....but if you want to see how a typical MMORPG can show the other extreme (poor) on the same universe (Elder Scrolls), then ESO is for you.

$99 for a crab to run after me like a puppy dog?

lol! They can keep the CE for all I care. The game is just not different or good enough to warrant a regular purchase.

Can you guess how I know this?
