We do definetly need better, deeper, more realistic MMO's, and certainly need less linear paths. But I suppose that cannot take away from blizzard that they do what they do when all others doing what they do never fair as well. EDIT Occured to me they doubled the US market and did that almost glitch free, ESP when I compare it to other games with far less accounts to handle. When I hear someone complain about bugs in WoW I do have to giggle. I mean when I think of how much more bug free it is com[pared to games I like more then WoW, and they didnt have anywhere near 6 million pop on to make it worse. And then lag was not near an issue, when It does happen In WoW I feel like I am being cheated because it usually runs so well. That is a change. So I hope that games with better ideas learn from blizzard what to do correctly and then we got somthing special. |

Ncsoft makes shallow games, blizzard would be a terrible fit as well, besides they would never do it when they have potential starcraft and diablo mmo's. The style of blizzard would be in direct contrast to star trek, Blizz strips away immersion like paris hilton does clothes and star trek desperately needs to be 100% immersion to be acceptable to its fans. [which is the only reason i loves the idea of sto, as immersion is painfully absent in polished mmos :( ] I think star trek is ill fitted for mmo's because companies are not willing to make a game immersive to any real degree, as they cannot wrap their minds around immersive not being overly complicated. So for that reason I would much rather see a big budget, well polished firefly or farscape MMo. We really need somthing cool, The year 1980 took cool out in front of the whole planet and shot it in the head, So we just really need an MMO thats as polished as Warcraft, as deep as Columbo, as immersive as reading Tolkien for the first time while stoned, and really really cool. joy would insue! we need an mmo that does for online games what the wizard of oz did for movies, err, or what Sgt. Peppers did for music, or err, Zeppelin's 4th. well you know what I mean. |

if money has to be in game put a strict limit on what things can sell for, then make it so nobody can just give money to another player. with a limit on what an item can sell for and no money gifts there can be no gold farming! Put immersion back into MMO's, my favorite way at the moment is through farming as an example. real farming, where people grow things much the way they would in the real world, and that theyre skill yields varying results! They would have bugs to worry about eating the crops! they would need to know what season to plant what crops, and dammit make seasons change the look and feel of the game!!! :P Then an alchemist would be one of the professions that relies on farmers, his potions would vary according to his ability and the quality goods he got from farmers. Grinding should be in a MMO but it should be non essential stuff, and it should be fun as possible. For example instead of having to click over and over to make housing, make the house building a challenging artform. bottom line make a virtual world that is polished! polish polish polish will get our game popular. Also for those that cannot log on enough for the real time professions have both non real time profession as well as jobs that allow people to be hired by those that cannot log on as much as theyd like. Just a start! :) |

The mmo market is still a baby, 10 years from now 8 million could seem like a small number. before WoW the most popular MMO's counted in the hundreds of thousands, then boom! next it will be counted in the 10's of millions. MMO's are clearly the future. Also remember too that upcoming MMO's are happy warcraft is so huge, not angry. They know that this means the market is growing and they will certainly have a share. When a game is made that is better in the eyes of the masses , it wont matter how long WoW has been around, nor will it matter how entrenched it is, people will play the better game! PS also the fact the people do not own houses that they placed with lots of belongings in it will come back to bite these non immersive games in the butt. People will know that they will not suffer from leaving, because they can always come back right where they left off! |

QUOTE----If I bought Guildwars or Fury or something like that, and then after leveling out started complaining about the lack of PvE content... well, I'd be about as dumb as a bag of hammers.-----END QUOTE
true true, however this shows all the more why PvP should have been added, most knew to stay away from this game, but those that played draw attention to why it should be there all the more so. Not to mention, again, that combat in this game was such a letdown, if you make it PvE only, you had better make it great. It is'nt. :( |

QUOTE-------------It's like what was said earlier... FFA PvP is a sub-niche of a niche playstyle. It's hugely popular among those who want that playstyle. It's not hugely popular among MMO players overall. I would have thought that after years, now, of crying out for a "true hardcore, FFA PvP MMO", and not yet getting it that fact might have sunken in.------------END QUOTE LMAO....ok lets addresss. A little over half the MMO market here plays World of Warcraft....Almost all of them, certainly every single person I know play PvP one way or another. That would make PvP the overwhelming choice! Thats a fact now ey! FFA PvP though? I'd say its doing well too, bottom line is PvE'ers, or those that only want PvE are clearly the minority. You'd think if a company makes a PvE only game the PvE would be better. LoTRO clearly, and I mean clearly did not. NWN and dungeon sige have better PvE and they cost 20 bucks combined.

Bottom line is.... ...LoTRO is a joke. My Favorite books of all time in the fictional department were poorly represented here. MMO's have PvE as a means to grind mostly. To say it is a story based game is a way of fooling ones self. All MMo's are supposedly story based and this games storyline isnt anything special at all! ( I didnt see people really caring WHY they had to kill 10 pigs) Sadly after leaving out PvP which imo middle earth was perfect for, they didnt even deliver a game with good combat compared to other MMo's.... PVP is voluntary in almost all Mmo's, carebears have no longer a gripe, SO why omit it? Because they didnt have the talent to? well yes, but they screwed up, they got sooooo worried that Tolkien fans would cry out loud if it wasnt story heavy so they dropped PvP. 7 poorly realized classes and Pve? Sounds like boredom you pay for. Every single person I talked to in person about LoTRO when it was announced was giddy over playing orcs and such, seriously every single one. Me too for that matter. IM sure there are some that didnt care but they would have had thier PvE anyways. Making it PvE has NOT made it better PvE. It has not at all! PvP would have made this game playable for lots and lots. Many Tolkien fans would have loved the chance to thwart the good guys too. After killing wandering monsters and doing uninspired quest, whats left? usually PvP with its undetermined outcome. With LoTR its another game. Let those that love thier repetition have this one. I just hope one day we get a real Middle earth MMORPG |

Originally posted by heerobya what you call moving forward is actually many steps backwards! It is alot easier to "polish" a game when you have taken away tons of content instead of adding more. take WoW, it has literally 1 tenth of the immersion of first generation MMO's. sure it is polished as hell. Yet it also stripped bare of immersion. What it does it does well no doubt, but its omissions are to the point. The idea that they cannot polish a game with tons of immersionn would also be a silly one. Never let companies get away with as little as possible while overcharging us for it. (All the companies used to blatanly admit before they released games that they would charge as much as the could get away with. Add to that in blizzards case of charging a ridiculous 25 dollars to move a character along with other eye popping charges and its clear that greed drives them over everything else.) MMo's are indeed getting worse now that the precedent has been set that "dumbing" a game down is the way to riches. Many of us from the early days of MMO's want new generation games to double and triple immersion not what they are doing now. While I admit WoW is fun for a time I constanly find myself sighing at the sad and truly uninspired brain dead approach it takes to crafting as well as the complete omission of virtual reality aspects. Then again this proves what I have said for years. people on this planet, esp from what I see in the US are increasingly less intelligent. Thus the mass appeal of such games. Baldurs Gate online might me nice :)...might! |

It just occured to me after writing my last post what my ultimate MMO would be. 3 Factions! Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles! You choose your faction based on your fav of the 3 groups! all in game music would therefore be supplied by said 3 groups! Of course it would have to have immersion, deep but fun crafing with real time elements, Housing etc...but this is where it should start...with the mighty 3 ! :) would love to see this soooooo much :P |

What makes this an MMO? have we got so low that obvious grinders, otherwise known as action roleplay are being called MMOs? If so maybe more will join "us" in demanding MMo's get back to being virtual otherlives. They keep getting "dumbed down" . I like an action roleplay game as much as anyone. But raising the repetition to insanity levels and calling it an MMO isnt right. We should have categories now..... Massive Multiplayer Online Role PLaying games-----these allow us to live, work, play, and fight in virtual worlds and earn a monthly fee. You "live" in and create much of the world around you, so when fighitng comes, you find youself actually caring about the things being fought over. Like maybe your homeland. Korean Grind games---------These games resemble the above games but they have had all immersion stripped away, so all you do is fight. You do craft, but not in a way that a 4 year old could'nt easily master. They overcharge for thier services and should be half the cost of the above games. World of Warcraft is in this category. So is City of Heroes. Action Roleplay with multiplayer games----these games emphasize action and barely throw a booger at roleplaying. They are fun but not on a daily basis for weeks and weeks then months and months. They should only have a 1 cost fee but more and more we see the asian marketing of charging people for the best parts of a game. In trying to make more money they dabble in the MMO market which likely cost gameplay because they are not focusing on what they truly are. Thats my opinion. |

QUOTE---------------------------("The fee won't deter anyone serious. Look at WoW, they have a monthly fee and they are fine.")---------------------------- ENDQUOTE Warcraft for all it shallowness is still considered an MMO ( I'd call it the best korean grindfest ever ) ...Hellgate London as far as anyone can tell really is'nt one. Many have questioned it being on this website. So I think many will be turned off of this pay system. I am, and I am because a game like that, who is gonna wanna play it LONG without spending the xtra money? very few oddballs likely. It just has a snake oil salesman feel to it. Not to mention it just isnt looking nearly as good as the hype says it should. The only game Blizzard ever did that I loved is diablo 2...I'm still tirelessly awaiting a true sequel to that game. Games like Titan Quest are great , just not great enough. Least it had the camera view right.

the screenshots I saw made it look in 3D. Is that the case? I miss the 2D (see PS below) of Diablo, games like Company of Heroes show us how mindblowing the graphics and physics can be in a top down look. I cannot see a true sequel to diablo in any other graphical style. I like 3D as much as anyone but it isnt the only way to do things, On a side note, I still think that a mainstream Top Down MMO that is well polished will be the biggest MMO ever. Because if it is done just right it will appeal to a much broader audience. It is just addictive when perfected. Imagine Diablo 3 in modern 2D physics!!! it would be "huge" as Donald Trump would say, LoL
PS I am not sure 2d is correct, I should probably say isometric or top down view....not sure but I think those are the correct terms. |

I followed this game since the day they announced it. I am a huge sg1 and MMO fan....but, I stopped following it as lead desinger, what's his name, compared it to WoW and how they are basically making a sci fi WoW. To my amazement some have told me I'm wrong about that, yet it was clear to me. He plays world of warcraft and pointed out how STO will try to improve on WoW's model. He elaborated. Not to mention it is not bringing back immersion in any way I saw. Admittedly I gave up following it as it made me grumpy. What is different about this game other then the stargate theme? It makes me really bummed as if I were making ths game I would take the very exciting possibilities that come with SG and use them to set this game far apart from the clones of clones we have everywhere. Bring back immersion! Instead of us LIVING the life in a stargate world, we will be fighting and leveling. Anyone notice that korean grinding really has infiltrated the US market? Anyhoo has the game changed any? |

another thought about making STO great. I think focusing on space travel tooo much would be a bad thing, mainly because if you focus on space treks you would have to make it hard core for it to be good, and too hard core will shrink thier account numbers, like it or not. I want hardcore, but it would be easier, and make way more sense to make it hard core with space elements rather then focusing on space travel. If I could create a klingon and live on my homeworld in a typcal mmo style, and then have space options later and have space traveling players come to me , I think this makes more sense. What do you all think? you think they should focus heavily and mainly on space? if so how would that work for mass appeal? I feel right now anyway that having space travel be a means to get to the focus of the game would be better overrall. Then flush out space travel via expansions. Example======------====== If I am spending all my time on a ship, I live on the ship? then how do the same players stay on the same ships etc? I think having people switch ships would be dorky as hell. logging in to random ships would be dorky. I just dont see how you do that without being severly harcore. Which would work for me by the way, just not to the mass audience. Also I think having worlds being the main focus game makes alot of sense... people not being able to traverse space right off to visit other worlds but having to explore and become bonded with thier homeworlds seems to make more sense. this way space travel is somthing to work towards. I would even go as far as saying that once you create a character on a homeworld, that you cannot then create other characters from other homeworlds on that server with that account. this way other worlds become a bit of a mystery and somthing fun to explore. If we agree that spending all our time in space aboard a ship isnt the way to go, then that makes planets a must do, for the devs to focus on. having huge worlds that are not well created would be aweful.-also if we focus too much on space then even when we do get to worlds to explore they wont be any good anyway. |

Seriously, maybe we should organize a type of protest, starting with perpetual entertainment. Would be great to organize and bombard them with snail mail, because snail mail gets attention not e mails. Anyone out there a leader in the mmo sfi fi world and know other so we could organize? I do think it is the only way to get what we want. |

Originally posted by Tastywheat1 brilliant! now I seriously doubt they would do such a thing but this is the type of thinking we need in mmo's. we would get them to make these things but people do not demand it. which is so phurking typical, especially the USA today. What really makes me nutty is the people that think demanding more of mmo's today is wrong, and that they are sure these companies are doing everything they can! The truth is the exact opposite, companies are stripping away ideas instead of taking the medium to where it could be for us. Of all the ideas star trek has the most potential subject-wise for us, at least right now.cheyenne mountain is making stargate online, but they made it very clear to those who would listen that they are making a warcraft clone. not too mention they made it a shooter game, wtf right? not the first thing I think of when I think stargate. or sci fi for that matter. Sci Fi should have combat of course, but it is better known for its creativity and immersion in new worlds! Stargate for me had a ton of potential because going through the stargate and instancing out the other side gave rise to great possibilities adventure wise. I just hope that they assume trekkies will want to be able to simulate actually being on the show and then some. Not play a typical modern brain dead MMo blizz style~
