No one does WoW better than WoW.

This.

I was more excited for SWTOR than any other mmo, ever. I loved the single player KOR, love Star Wars, and love Bioware's story telling. And for 49 levels I was still convinced that I had finally found my new Sci-Fi home after leaving SWG. Then I got to level 50 and the excitement wore off.

Nothing has ever kept me excited for longer than 6 months or so, and nothing will until they make a Sci-Fi WoW. I gave up waiting for another SWG a long time ago.

While it might be interesting to watch all of the current F2P games panic at a WoW F2P announcement, I do not want to see wow go F2P.

I think Blizzard would have a better F2P monetization system than most companies, but the temptation to add stuff other than cosmetic would likely become too great and even Blizzard would cave in and make the cash shop a must for end game content. I want to pay my set monthly sub and get access to everything the game has to offer besides a few cosmetics.

I do not want to pay for a sub and still have to use the cash shop, or play a game that spends 90% of the continuing development on cash shop "content".

Seriously... Does EVERYTHING have to be made into an MMO? I love the civilization games. I have extensively played every one of the games and expansions. Civ 5 is my most played game on steam, but enough is enough. Not every game needs to be made into a MMO or online experience (cough, Sim City, cough).

Tough to decide between ESO, W.ildstar, and Destiny.

I went with ESO because it was more personally disappointing. But at the same time it is the one I would most likely return to at some point. So I'm not sure again. I guess I should have voted Wildstar since I know there is zero chance I return to that game.

Maybe because every "action" mmo I tried felt shallow and catered towards people 20 years younger than me.

So far, in my opinion, ridicule targeting mmos have been shallow, bunny hoping, button smashers with little to no depth. At least with my tab target mmos I get more than a handful of skills.

There is a place in gaming for twitchy mmos, but it is obvious they are not as popular. As long as they stay in their corner, I don't mind them being made, in fact I think they should be for the fans of those kind of games. Just don't be upset that I don't want to play your bunny hop-fest.

Also, hacking is an big issue with games that require aiming.

I agree with this  to some degree for sure , altho i enjoy both types of combat i dont like action combat  in my MMOs( definitley prefer Tab) , i do enjoy Action Combat  in D3 and Hand of Fate for ex.. ( Great 3d card rogue like btw)  But in MMos the erhmm classes feel classless .. not enough defining them at all imo .. and they all feel quite the same just different bloom and effects on the limited skills provivded to the generic classless system these types of Action MMOs provide..

I play action games too. I love Grand Theft Auto Online, TF2, and like you D3.

Just not a fan of it in MMOs. Mostly because every one I have experienced has been severely lacking in fun. MMORPG's are, in my opinion, are about character development and group strategy. Twitch combat is about how much caffeine you have and your connection speed or if you just want to play a game that does not require much prep or thought, like GTA Online.

I am looking for an mmo right now to make up for lack of social life so i am interested in something like wow with endgame that can be tackled with a guild. I like everything about wow except for the combat system and the cartoon graphics.

I would just try some, but I don't have money to spend on subscriptions and games when I have no idea what I'm getting into.

I want a game with group endgame content, strong pvp, and exciting combat that doesn't rely on a billion skills and is more reactive to the game world rather than just following rotations.

You want a F2P game with a better world and better combat than wow and that's not cartoony?

Good luck with that.

Difficulty is a choice in WoW. The hard part is the harder raid levels.

I don't understand how people cannot see this.

Wow has whatever difficulty you want. You want derpy stuff to do? Level another alt or run heroic dungeons in raid gear. You want a challenge? Get into a progression guild and get to work downing mythic. Tired of PVE? run some rated bgs or arenas.Hell even leveling an alt can be difficult if you see how far you can get naked. People just want to whine without trying to find ways to correct whatever they are whining about.

I guarantee that those whining about wow being to easy would whine it was too hard if Blizzard made everything difficult. But Blizzard wont because they are not dumb. WoW is king after 10 years because they get it. Sometimes I want to be challenged, sometimes I just want to chill. WoW is by far the best game for that.

Mythic Raids are hard...

Ugh, another action combat game. Pass.

WoW really does have another decade of dominance to look forward too.

This year I will not buy another mmo. I should be tired of WoW again once the weather gets better, I think I might just go outside.

There is little need to. Most of them are F2P anyway.

I don't bother with F2P.

no wonder you don't play MMOs ... how many are not F2P? 5?

I play mmos, so far this year I have played WoW, Wildstar, and ESO. None of them are F2P,... yet.

Not to be that guy, but my time is worth more to me than a few pennies. If the game is worth playing I gladly pay a sub. I have yet to experience a F2P game that is worth my time, EXCEPT swtor on occasion. But even when I play swtor I sub (plus I purchased it). F2P games are generally sub-par and have the annoying habit of constantly reminding me there is a cash shop to browse. No I do not want your $5 pet or to play Barbie or pay to open a box. Give me a sub and stop asking for money.

Regarding my OP, ESO and Wildstar and going back a few years, swtor, are a big reasons I am having my doubts about the P2P market as well. The last mmo I bought and was pleasantly surprised was Rift, and that is likely due to having no expectations when I started. Unless a game brings something entirely different to the market (which isn't going to happen in 2015), I will just stick to WoW until I get bored of raiding or my friends do, whichever comes first.

People that brag about never spending money in MMOs these days bother me the most.  Too cheap to support the industry that entertains them for countless hours.

I'd have to disagree with the OP about the bragging of kids. Older people brag too. There is were always people with their epeen out in WoW, when I used to play.

Cheap ? Or not will to participate in the money schemes ?

Not participating would be not playing the game. Even just playing F2P games encourages them since the free-loaders are content for the whales.

If you hate F2P monetization like I do, don't even bother to download the games.

That's one way - I sometimes use the Ole keep your friends close but enemies closer, hop into these games and poison the community, only if it's really ripping people though.

Keep fighting the good fight!

I pretend to value their input - it's done wonders for me. What a nice house, great job on that quarterly report, you're the best..... stroke those egos, it will do wonders.

THIS.

The baby boomers whine and whine about younger generations,... they raised us. If anything it is their fault. Not only that but they are typically the most racist, homophobic, and sexist people still around. The planet will likely be better off when they are gone or no longer in power.

My secret for enjoying mmos in 2015 is to stop chasing nostalgia. Stop chasing the feeling that early 2000's mmos gave me. Stop buying into pre-launch hypes. Stop wasting time and money on unfinished rushed releases hoping to find the next gem.

Nothing.

After buying nothing during black Friday sale I hurried up and bought nothing this time around too.

The problem of looking and realizing I have everything I want already - 1st world problems.

Same here.

I started to browse the sales and realized there really wasn't any game that I really wanted. Besides, I still have a dozen or so games from previous steam sales that I have yet to put any time into. Maybe by this time next year I will feel the urge to buy more games to sit in my steam account un-played - 1st world problems.

I will be avoiding this game like a plague. Every time I hear anything about Star Citizen, it is regarding a new ship being sold for thousands of dollars. Are there really that many people out there who are willing to drop enough to buy a decent used car on a few pixels?

I try not to care about how others spend money, but this is ridiculous. I really hope that this game is an outlier and this nonsense of needing $1,000's to pre-purchase items ends with this game. But I know it won't, a sucker is born every minute.

If this game fails to deliver, at least the chargeback threads will be interesting.

NEEDING thousands of dollars to pre-purchase ?You need 30 $ for a pledge package. Nothing more.

EVERYTHING else you can get in game for in game money in a moderate amount of time (talking days or at max weeks, not months here). There will be NOTHING in the game that is exclusively available for real world money - its one of the design principles of the game. You often can test out other ships than the one you have in your pledge package for free.

Others may have more ships ... they still can fly only one of them. Some may have bigger ships ... but in Star Citizen bigger is not better, it just means that the bigger ship has another role to fulfill compared to the smaller ship. And bigger ships are not efficient if you fly them solo ... they are supposed to be crewed by 3-25 players. Otherwise they are torpedo bomber bait (torpedo bombers being small player controlled ships) or solo capital ship pilots geting dragged out of their cockpits by player marines boarding the ship.

Yes, some people give quite a bit of money for this crowdfunding project. Because they see more than just this one game in the project. They hope for a change in the game industry. For some, thats worth quite a bit. Its their own personal money, to spend as they see fit. Personally I have one ship (Constellation) and one account ... and for me thats enough.

There are 704.000+ backers for this project. So the average pledge is below 100 bucks (that  usually means a solo ship, various documents and music, a T-Shirt, some deco and flair items and a few months  "Jump-Point" magazine subscription as the typical pledge).

You may have heard about "everyone" having to spend "thousands of dollars". Its just propaganda.

Have fun

I appreciate you taking the time to explain the situation. And I understand that most don't buy the $1000 ships.

I guess I just have a problem with the approach. It just feels like a cash grab when they are selling such high priced items on pre-order. I also understand that there are people that a couple thousand dollars is nothing, but the recent news about this game has erased any interest I had in it. I hope the game is fun for those who are looking forward to it, I will not be preordering anything and will wait to see how this all plays out.

No matter what happens it will be interesting to watch. If is a success, expect to see more of this kind of monetization. If it is not, there will not be a massive crowd funding game for a while, or not, maybe I give gamers too much credit to be cautious with their money. I just worry that soon all games will have the Ferrari option, taking away one of my favorite things about gaming, that anyone can be someone. Gaming in a way levels the playing field between me and some trust fund kid who has an unlimited credit limit. I guess I should just give up the dream, gaming will soon be just like everything else, 1% will rule and the rest of us will huddle around in-game cities hoping for a glimpse of one of these wallet Gods. F2P games already do this $5 at a time (which is why I avoid them), Star Citizen is just taking it to another level.

I will be avoiding this game like a plague. Every time I hear anything about Star Citizen, it is regarding a new ship being sold for thousands of dollars. Are there really that many people out there who are willing to drop enough to buy a decent used car on a few pixels?
