When I saw this bit of news while loading up my game yesterday it almost made me faint. Wow finally!!!! Very happy little EQ2 player here.

How is WoW kicking ass exactly? With its outdated combat against Wildstar's amazingly executed new take on MMORPG combat (thats one of the pillars for me in this game), "housing" aka garrisons after 10 years of release, outdated engine AND difficulty lowered to a standard where a monkey could run 20 man raid successfully...

oh and yeah, they are running out of ideas on lore... cataclysm was a great move, but Pandas, really? or back in time to draenor where garrosh changed the course of history - REALLY? jeez

Ok are you done? feeling better now?

WOW is 10 year old game with 7 million subscribers. Yes a 10 year old game. A bad and mediocre game doesn't survive that long no matter how much money you throw on marketing and advertising.

I actually feel sorry for wildstar players like you. it is like an ant trying to poke an elephant.

Lets forget about 20 man raid of WOW and how even monkeys can run it... how are the 40 man raids doing in Wildstar? i hear they are a smash hit and WS has millions of happy customers.

You are right though, Carbine knows what they are doing..while Blizzard with its outdated engine, ideas and lore have no clue how to run a MMO.

Now excuse me i need to step away from keyboard so that i can laugh hysterically without damaging my pc.

Brb.

Hee if WS had WoW's outdated engine I would have enjoyed the game a lot more

Having some trouble posting at the moment on mmorpg.com.

When a game falls flat on its face, I don't think you can usually point to one thing that was done catastrophically wrong that "broke" the game for everyone.  People look for different things in their games.  WildStar happened to not do much at all that was outstanding.  Whatever you're into as a player, there are game's out there, maybe even one's you've played, that do them better.  In the areas where it was like WoW, it was worse than WoW.  In the areas it was like GW2, it was worse than GW2.  In the areas you might argue it excelled, only a small population cared.

I think that part of the problem is that people compared it to WoW when it really is not that much like WoW, even in classic form. I am not quite sure where people get the idea that WS is vanilla WoW outside of some very superficial aspects. A lot of people loved vanilla WoW and I think would flock to an official vanilla WoW server. I think WS would be more popular if it were truly like vanilla WoW.

I can only speak for myself why I have now left the game even though I do like it overall. The main reason is that I found something I like playing more. Please note that I never bothered with PvP in this game.

What WS has going for it in my opinion:

- An interesting world with a good and sound base for lore and expansion of that lore.

- Sci-fi, this is important since there are fewer sci-fi MMORPGs out there and I prefer sci-fi to fantasy.

- Decent systems overall and a good choice of systems: housing, interesting crafting that actually is worth something, adventures, the path system, etc.

- Challenging gameplay at all levels. It keeps me on my toes and I often felt good when I did succeed at doing something difficult.

- I actually like the mobility options in this game very much. I have mixed feelings about the action combat because I find the build-up, finisher, utility rotation drab after a while.

What is wrong in my opinion:

- As I have said in previous posts, the classes. They need reworking as I find them highly flawed and lack a hook. I also think that class customization needs an overhaul, there is too little flexibility in how you can build your class. Lastly more needs to be done with what kind of skills you get and the over-reliance on build-up and finishers of more recent MMOs has to go.

- Too much reliance on grindy group play at endgame and a raid system that is closed to anyone not in a top raiding guild. I also think they should lower the number of people required in raids seeing how hard it is to get the necessary amount of people to go run one. They could keep some of the current 40 mans in, but I think they should put in a flexible raid system and smaller raids to ease people into the bigger ones or at least give an option to smaller guilds to raid if they can't scrounge up 40 people.

- I utterly hate the concept of timed dungeons and being awarded a score on how fast you run them. If it was just for an achievement, that would be one thing, but it is far more integral to the endgame than that.

OP, i do agree with your view on the game right now and i have to also give credit to the other poster that said " Why not wait a bit after release to see how it plays out before buying ". The reason is if you buy now or at release and it is not good then the only thing you did is give them more money and make them realize they can get away with it again.

What i personally will do this time around is wait at least 3 to 4 months before buying the new xpac. The reason that makes me take this decision is that i am testing the beta and i really don't like there views on the game anymore. It is true they are taking away lot's of spells and skills and changing them into passive talents or skills. Did you know also you don't get any new spells while leveling this xpac? You only get the current one but with a bonus on it. eg : improved frostbolt or improved scorch, improved frost nova, etc.etc. until you reach level 100 and that is about every 2 levels and only 1 or 2 spells at a time .

The garrison do have nice things like your own gryphon master, your own blacksmith, leatherworker trainer, etc. But no new class, races, etc to try out or to level up. Also you will get more stuff to buy in there shop, a free 90 boost to spend on a new toon or existing toon that is not yet 90, but no new bg or arenas. I forgot to say you will get a full island just to pvp and lots of maps to play in but again no flying in them not even at level100. *****And don't delete that shinny new 90 or the gear else you just lost your new 90 even if deleted right after creation, so don't mess up your toon once you click create it is done : extra character boost cost 60$ .******

So basically i would be buying new maps with a way of questing that will unlocks parts of my garrison as i do them until i complete it + i get to level up to 100, just like doing the farms in MOP. Yes thats right it comes down to the same thing. And hours of questing and world pvp + new dungeons and ways to access raids. But that is about it.

Do yourself a favor and wait till a few months after release before buying this time around to see how many people will stay or leave and also you will have time to view some youtube game play and reviews to see if yes or no it is for you and spare yourself 50$ + some subs time if you really don't like it.

This is a good post, and definitely advice I am going to follow. I do eventually plan on getting WoD, but it is coming out at the same time roughly as an expac for another game I would rather try out first.

If you are not sure about the expac, definitely wait and see what others think of it, whether it releases with all of the features you are hoping for, and whether you think you will like it. It is not worth throwing money at if it just lies on your hard disc unplayed.

Overall looks good. I like the changes so far outside of perhaps the new questfinder interface, which I did not honestly feel necessary. I liked having just a small journal you can open up when you want to check on your quest really fast. As long as it is not seriously buggy, I guess the changes to it are not that bad.

The new inventory management change is in my opinion the best thing they are doing. I have been wanting this for years and years. I am surprised it took Blizzard quite so long to put this change in. Even though your bags are not as big as, say in Everquest 2 where you can have bags with up to over 40 item slots, it was still a pain in the butt to look for stuff with no sort function at all. I am also estatic to hear that they are adding several kinds of inventories so that you don't waste precious bag space on things like quest items, which was one of my biggest beefs with WoW for a long time.

I am neutral to the changes to the artwork for races. The changes look nice, I like the old models too. It is not that important to me.

I like the idea of some changes to the item stats too. I never understood why there were some stats as opposed to others. However, I think that the stats have been dumbed down too much and that may be the real reason why they seem a bit boring. Making them more streamlined is not going to alleviate that, it will exacerbate it. I wish that Blizzard would make stats like dex for something like a Warrior interesting again. That would be one way to increase your dodge for example. Blizzard should add more choices to how you gear your tank rather than just making one size fits all kind of thing.

This game is awesome and probably the best value overall as far as amount of content given. I keep coming back to it for this reason. Welcome to the game and I hope you enjoy your playtime. The game is certainly funner in a good guild, but you can solo for as much as you want. Everything is free up until the last expac and one of the content packs that gives you access to the Beastlord, dungeon making and mercs.

And in answer to the OP, yes, people definitely still play. Is it as populated as WoW? No. But there are enough people on, even on the other servers, that you can have a lot of fun. We are also looking at a new upcoming expac here pretty soon, so the game is still being developed.

I had a Defiler (healer shaman) and it was too slow soloing on her when I tried to come back a few years ago.  Is soloing better for healer now or not?

Thanks.

Healers are still slightly slower due to lower over all DPS. Just grab a Merc though and leveling is a lot quicker. You should be able to take on packs of yellow con mobs.

I can't answer his question on a Defiler but I can certainly answer his question on a Warden. Even without a merc, the Warden is a highly soloable character and can do some really big pulls without dying.

Yes, a Warden kills more slowly than a dps-oriented character, just as Nyghthowler explains but the advantage is fantastic self-healing. You can soak up so much damage that you can actually level up faster thanks to the fact that you can make bigger pulls.

If you pick up a tank merc though you can go even faster. An excellent choice if you are evil aligned is to pick up the SK merc in Nariak. She kills pretty quickly and en masse.

I switched from a Conj main to a Warden and I don't regret it.

I haven't seen a portal either ... and  i have killed a lot of them .. sigh.

Many hours of gaming and hundreds of the little farts dead, I still have not gotten a single Treasure Realm portal to pop. Sigh... all of that loot I am missing.

I think it is too early to say whether WS has failed or not.

I think that this title was meant to be niche from the get-go and I even said so in the headstart days. I did not think that this game would have a large population because of its endgame mainly. It just stands to reason that a lot of today's MMO players do not really have the time to spend on long attunements and getting 39 other people together and organized to go raid. I think it is mainly that design decision that affects the population over most of the others that people have mentioned as possible reasons why players don't stay in this game.

I bet that if Carbine were to allow the option to reduce the raid size to 20 people but maintain the raids' difficulty, things would pan out for the better for most guilds even if they were to keep everything else the same.

The second big issue as I see it is the lacklustre classes and lack of balance between them. Customizability is poor, very poor and there are must-have specs with little option to design the character you want to play. I see that not many people mention this but rather mention the quests. I actually found the quests more interesting than the classes but the end result stays the same: tedium.

I think if Carbine were to look into offering 20 man versions of raids, redesign the classes to add more flavor, variety and interest in them, it would help this game out a lot and would insure WS' success. I think a questhub themepark can still survive in today's MMORPG genre, but I find that Carbine's vision has been a bit too exclusive to make this game really shine. It is a shame because it has an excellent foundation and some fantastic ideas in it.

It did, I've gotten a portal. You have to kill the goblin and sometimes he leaves a portal behind. It is very very rare. Portal ended up giving me close to 15 million in gold and like 4-5 legendarys if you have enough dps to kill all the goblin spawns during final boss and throughout the zone.

You mean like less than 1% chance of it happening? I have killed bazillions of goblins by now and not one treasure portal. Killed them in all difficulties, nada.

How do you do it?

You have to let it run and spawn a portal before killing it?

I have tried what nariusseldon asked in his post and I have still not gotten a portal to pop.

In no particular order:

1. DAoC

2. EVE Online

3. EQ2

They are not terribly new games, but they were the ones I have had the most fun in. If you like sandboxes and don't want to play in space as a spaceship, I would recommend Ryzome. There is enough there I think to entertain you until AA launches.

I found it a funny article as I fit all the points pretty much - no voice comms or raiding for me! lol

Same here, especially for voice comms. I find them so unappealing. I have been known to raid from time-to-time but honestly, anymore, I would rather do something else.

What!? I am NOT a dirty casual. I am clean, very clean. I make sure to take at least one shower a day and even change my panties and socks regularly.

Harumph!

Good article, though I only personally have tried two of the titles on the list and I agree with the author.

TR was a terrible game in my view and the only time I really regretted spending money on a game. I thought it was neat for about a day and then kicked myself after that for having bought it, even though I did not pay full price.

I would put Auto Assault on the list too because even though I personally liked it, I knew that it was not going to last very long. It did not have enough meat on its bones to really warrant being THE car MMORPG. Shame, because it sure was fun in short spurts.

I would also put Ryzome on there because though it has a lot of neat ideas, it did not feel like a completed game. It was way ahead of its time and is one of the true sandboxes out there, but it needs more stuff to do in my opinion. In fact many of peoples' wishes Ryzome already has. It is merely that the execution of Ryzome's features is a little poor and unfinished and thus the game never really attracted the population it needs to make it really fun.

Shame about the Lego game. It should have been what Minecraft is.

I think it is bad to overgeneralize honestly. As a member of the old guard, I think that MMORPGs have improved in many ways, mostly technical. For me the sweet point was 2003 to 2004 (not 1998 or whatever) and then there has been very little that I have really enjoyed playing that has come out since then.

The games from 2003 and 2004 were really quite revolutionary in comparison to the first MMORPGs. I don't go back to the first MMOs I played, I go back to games like EQ2 and WoW. In that sense, I have not refused to change but rather that the more recent offerings are rather boring in comparison. They have not really evolved that much since then, just the addition of technical things like phasing and megaservers that can be mixed blessings. If you look at what games like Rift and WS offer, they are pretty similar to what the batch of 2004 offers, just with less depth imo.

I am not clamouring at all for a new batch of oldschool games at all, but I would like to see more innovation. The game industry seems stagnant to me and that it is rather in the adolescent stage rather than in the grown up stage. The problem is that its adolescence is prolonged and something needs to jump start it again.

To me what is most exciting at the moment are games like PoE and other good multiplayer ARPGs. These games have innovated their genre more so than MMORPGs have in the past 5 years.

Well wonder no more. In the next patch, you'll have a chance to follow the goblin after he jumps into his portal and fight Greed, The Baroness of the Treasure Realm.

This video was taken on the PTR.

It looks like this did not make it into the patch this time round. I let a goblin poof in front of me to see if I could follow him and I couldn't.

Wizard because it's easiest.

Oh woah, no it isn't! Wizards have great strengths but some great weaknesses too. I would say that the Crusader is probably overall the easiest class to build: does great medium range damage, has decent crowd control, movement skills and is survivable thanks to its damage reduction and shield blocking. In fact, it is a class that has virtually no weaknesses at all.

I just bought it for my ps4, I'm Paragon lvl 4, this is the only game I've ever played for more than 24 hours straight, I can't put it down, I play as a male Crusader, I loved shield bash while leveling, but I play mainly as a swipe and slash. Something really funny, I look exactly like the Crusader irl. Best game ever, high quality and excellent value, I have to go to work tomorrow or else I would be playing right now, I'm addicted.

Don't forget to eat and sleep!

So now that this game has released on the consoles, what classes are console players playing as their main? I have not purchased the console version since I don't have one. I still play my WD but have been doing HC and the seasons on crusaders so I guess I have to say I am mainly split between cru/WD.

I am playing a seasons character for one simple reason: the option to start over. It is a shame that there is no way to start over if you want to just normally. Once all of your crafters are built up, they are built up, once you have all of the character classes you want at 70, there is no reason to start over, there is no reason to stash lower level gear, at least as an SC character.

Even though I have no hope of being in the top tiers of the seasons, I don't care. It is still fun to have a league that periodically has to start over again all the while keeping the old standard league that stays permanently, much like the league system in PoE. I am having fun on my seasons crusader starting from scratch.

My only beef with this patch is that they did not increase the number of character slots you have in your account.
