I think it is too early to say whether WS has failed or not.

I think that this title was meant to be niche from the get-go and I even said so in the headstart days. I did not think that this game would have a large population because of its endgame mainly. It just stands to reason that a lot of today's MMO players do not really have the time to spend on long attunements and getting 39 other people together and organized to go raid. I think it is mainly that design decision that affects the population over most of the others that people have mentioned as possible reasons why players don't stay in this game.

I bet that if Carbine were to allow the option to reduce the raid size to 20 people but maintain the raids' difficulty, things would pan out for the better for most guilds even if they were to keep everything else the same.

The second big issue as I see it is the lacklustre classes and lack of balance between them. Customizability is poor, very poor and there are must-have specs with little option to design the character you want to play. I see that not many people mention this but rather mention the quests. I actually found the quests more interesting than the classes but the end result stays the same: tedium.

I think if Carbine were to look into offering 20 man versions of raids, redesign the classes to add more flavor, variety and interest in them, it would help this game out a lot and would insure WS' success. I think a questhub themepark can still survive in today's MMORPG genre, but I find that Carbine's vision has been a bit too exclusive to make this game really shine. It is a shame because it has an excellent foundation and some fantastic ideas in it.

It did, I've gotten a portal. You have to kill the goblin and sometimes he leaves a portal behind. It is very very rare. Portal ended up giving me close to 15 million in gold and like 4-5 legendarys if you have enough dps to kill all the goblin spawns during final boss and throughout the zone.

You mean like less than 1% chance of it happening? I have killed bazillions of goblins by now and not one treasure portal. Killed them in all difficulties, nada.

How do you do it?

You have to let it run and spawn a portal before killing it?

I have tried what nariusseldon asked in his post and I have still not gotten a portal to pop.

In no particular order:

1. DAoC

2. EVE Online

3. EQ2

They are not terribly new games, but they were the ones I have had the most fun in. If you like sandboxes and don't want to play in space as a spaceship, I would recommend Ryzome. There is enough there I think to entertain you until AA launches.

I found it a funny article as I fit all the points pretty much - no voice comms or raiding for me! lol

Same here, especially for voice comms. I find them so unappealing. I have been known to raid from time-to-time but honestly, anymore, I would rather do something else.

What!? I am NOT a dirty casual. I am clean, very clean. I make sure to take at least one shower a day and even change my panties and socks regularly.

Good article, though I only personally have tried two of the titles on the list and I agree with the author.

TR was a terrible game in my view and the only time I really regretted spending money on a game. I thought it was neat for about a day and then kicked myself after that for having bought it, even though I did not pay full price.

I would put Auto Assault on the list too because even though I personally liked it, I knew that it was not going to last very long. It did not have enough meat on its bones to really warrant being THE car MMORPG. Shame, because it sure was fun in short spurts.

I would also put Ryzome on there because though it has a lot of neat ideas, it did not feel like a completed game. It was way ahead of its time and is one of the true sandboxes out there, but it needs more stuff to do in my opinion. In fact many of peoples' wishes Ryzome already has. It is merely that the execution of Ryzome's features is a little poor and unfinished and thus the game never really attracted the population it needs to make it really fun.

Shame about the Lego game. It should have been what Minecraft is.

I think it is bad to overgeneralize honestly. As a member of the old guard, I think that MMORPGs have improved in many ways, mostly technical. For me the sweet point was 2003 to 2004 (not 1998 or whatever) and then there has been very little that I have really enjoyed playing that has come out since then.

The games from 2003 and 2004 were really quite revolutionary in comparison to the first MMORPGs. I don't go back to the first MMOs I played, I go back to games like EQ2 and WoW. In that sense, I have not refused to change but rather that the more recent offerings are rather boring in comparison. They have not really evolved that much since then, just the addition of technical things like phasing and megaservers that can be mixed blessings. If you look at what games like Rift and WS offer, they are pretty similar to what the batch of 2004 offers, just with less depth imo.

I am not clamouring at all for a new batch of oldschool games at all, but I would like to see more innovation. The game industry seems stagnant to me and that it is rather in the adolescent stage rather than in the grown up stage. The problem is that its adolescence is prolonged and something needs to jump start it again.

To me what is most exciting at the moment are games like PoE and other good multiplayer ARPGs. These games have innovated their genre more so than MMORPGs have in the past 5 years.

Ever wonder where all those pesky goblins run off to?

Well wonder no more. In the next patch, you'll have a chance to follow the goblin after he jumps into his portal and fight Greed, The Baroness of the Treasure Realm.

This video was taken on the PTR.

It looks like this did not make it into the patch this time round. I let a goblin poof in front of me to see if I could follow him and I couldn't.

Wizard because it's easiest.

Oh woah, no it isn't! Wizards have great strengths but some great weaknesses too. I would say that the Crusader is probably overall the easiest class to build: does great medium range damage, has decent crowd control, movement skills and is survivable thanks to its damage reduction and shield blocking. In fact, it is a class that has virtually no weaknesses at all.

I just bought it for my ps4, I'm Paragon lvl 4, this is the only game I've ever played for more than 24 hours straight, I can't put it down, I play as a male Crusader, I loved shield bash while leveling, but I play mainly as a swipe and slash. Something really funny, I look exactly like the Crusader irl. Best game ever, high quality and excellent value, I have to go to work tomorrow or else I would be playing right now, I'm addicted.

Don't forget to eat and sleep!

So now that this game has released on the consoles, what classes are console players playing as their main? I have not purchased the console version since I don't have one. I still play my WD but have been doing HC and the seasons on crusaders so I guess I have to say I am mainly split between cru/WD.

I am playing a seasons character for one simple reason: the option to start over. It is a shame that there is no way to start over if you want to just normally. Once all of your crafters are built up, they are built up, once you have all of the character classes you want at 70, there is no reason to start over, there is no reason to stash lower level gear, at least as an SC character.

Even though I have no hope of being in the top tiers of the seasons, I don't care. It is still fun to have a league that periodically has to start over again all the while keeping the old standard league that stays permanently, much like the league system in PoE. I am having fun on my seasons crusader starting from scratch.

My only beef with this patch is that they did not increase the number of character slots you have in your account.

I wish they would make an offline version of the game for PC. I don't have a console but would like to be able to play offline. It is not always convenient to always be online. Why do they give this option to console players and not to everyone. Grrr... burns me up.

I was just curious, as it seems like a fairly decent deal. Is it just a monthly store credit, with discounts? Or are there in game benefits as well?

Is there anyone that is a subscriber and can shed some light as to it's value?

Yes, just speaking from the point of view of an EQ2 player. You get more character slots, an xp boost, more loyalty points, veteran rewards and the like. Though I only play EQ2, you get access to bonuses all across the SOE games though I can't tell you what these are. It makes it really worthwhile to get the All Access in my opinion.

It's simple. People keep asking for 'endgame, endgame, endgame', meaning hardcore raiding.

Problem is, most people don't actually enjoy hardcore raiding. They like getting loot, sure, but they don't want to deal w/ the hastle & drama of dealing with ~39 other people to get it.

Wildstar tried to deliver what these people wanted. And they accomplished that. Problem is, those people aren't as numerous as they'd have you believe. And you can't have an MMO without a lot of people.

This is a big problem with the design of most endgames. Some people love the grind, reseeing the same content over and over again, doing hundreds of daily quests to attune for a big raid, only to do the raid over and over again in the hopes that their item will drop and that they will win the role.

However, I think it is wrong for games to offer just that at endgame. There is so much more that can be done, and one thing I liked about classic LotRO is that at one point they kept releasing new books for high levels players to enjoy in that game. In EQ2 they add heroic zones along with more solo-oriented zones along with a large amount of new fluff items to go collect.

WoW went from being hardcore raids to having a large variety of things to do at endgame.

I think these are the right ideas though there is more that can be done. Taking an old idea, why not have more realm vs realm like PvP where endgame players can fight for keeps and towers and such? Why not have high level PvP dungeons? How about adding more endgame crafting elements like complex multi-part recipes or having long-term goals like building a large ship or something of that nature? Or building a guild city where a guild claims a guild plot and they have to quite literally work together to fight off nasty monsters and build long-term structures?

If devs only showed more creativity with endgame players would stick around a lot longer.

It depends on what you define as an UGC system. Is it only something apart from the game that you use to design something like a dungeon and includes scripts (what I am calling hard-coded) or is it any sort of way that players can make their own content (soft-coded)?

I can't speak for the Cryptic games on the list since I never played STO nor NWN and when I played CoX it was well before the existence of any UGC system.

However, I think that one of the Cryptic games should have been replaced with SWG because in that game a group of players could build their own cities complete with RPG features such as canteenas that could be operated entirely by player entertainers and crafters. Each type of "class" if you want to call it that had their role and player interactions were absolutely necessary. If CoX made the list, since it is a closed down game, surely SWG should have as well. It was not a 'hard-coded' UGC system like the dungeon makers mentioned in this article, but it was definitely a 'soft-coded one'.

By my defintion, Minecraft should definitely be on that list too.

I agree overall with the list though I think SL should be number 1 and again it is not a 'hard-coded' system like in EQ2 or NWN. It has no real competition for what you can design and script in comparison to what is on offer in other MMOs. If you want to design a drivable Ferrari, you can. If you want to make a death star environment, you can. All of that is done by players for other players, so yeah, everything else sort of pales in comparison.

I don't know so much about the issue in the OP since I did not catch it, but I do give WS kudos for just about one of the funniest bug fixes and patchnotes I ever read.

Sometime soon after release, Carbine released patchnotes stating that the word "bitte" in the German client was no longer flagged as an obscenity and would not be filtered out from then on. "Bitte" is a rather polite word in German so it may seem as rather strange that it was filtered out in the first place right? However, this word in French refers to a specific part of the male anatomy thus it would make perfect sense if it were filtered out in the French client. I don't know if it was or not since I honestly did not try to spam it in general chat on my French server to find out.

Carbine seemed to not really know the difference between French and German at first not only in this instance but in something that happened to me during headstart. I loaded up the French version of the game, logged in, a server was picked for me automatically and I made my character: a mechari Engineer. I got into the game only to realize that everyone was speaking German in zonechat and had German names. Since I have only a rudimentary knowledge of German, it was an instant reroll.

I am not the only one who experienced this. I came across a German-speaking chua Medic about a month after headstart who "somehow" got lost on my server.

Usually what happens is that the game detects what kind of language your client is in and picks the right kind of server. But apparently not WS!!

You can also keep multiple sets of gear so that you can have a variety of builds to play. I have already gathered the firebird set in anticipation of 2.1. I also have an arcane set (vyr + tal), and a lightning set (lightning stun is a viable spec, because of its much higher cc though the dps is a bit lower), though no frost gear though.

I do like how builds and gear are now very much interdependent.

I tried it, and also tried a couple other fire builds. So far much more satisfying in some ways than a frost or melee build and I don't have to sacrifice any of the Wiz's shields in Torment, which is always a nice thing. The build I currently have is balanced between defense and offense and so far she has not croaked in Torment since I changed her setup and she can clear areas quickly. The only thing I don't like with fire so far is is the limited choice of fire spells in comparison to ice and arcane.

I still prefer my WD though. Wizards are slugbutts and it is hard to go from a zippy character to one that meanders I prefer spirit walk to teleport.

It sounds like a really good expansion pack! I will definitely be playing even with the arrival of WoD roughly around the same time. I hope that EQ2 lasts even longer and continues to receive support from SOE.

Yeah, the engine is problematic and is really my only beef with the game overall. Only other irritation is that I disconnect sometimes when I zone, especially to the guild house.

Wizard. I always go for the class that fights by chucking unholy f*ck-you blasts at something, or groups of somethings. And I found the D3 wizard to be very, very capable of laying a serious beatdown on large numbers of targets at both close and extreme (off-screen) range (fire serpent ftw!).

Mucho fun :)

BTW, the wiz just got a huge buff in the firebird set in PTR (although there are also nerfs depending on how you look at it).

I think when 2.1 is released, wiz will be very fun to play (although people will argue now the class will tilt even MORE towards fire).

Try the gale hydra mi build .. it is awesome to see the whole screen on fire.

That sounds absolutely awesome! Will have to give that a try. My wizard is frost specced and has lots and lots of bubbly goodness. I love how survivable wizzies are nowadays.

Indeed, I am going to play it. The skill list is great::) It looks also like that the economy is like that of diablo 2.

Sort of... it is player-to-player and it is a bartering system, yes. Interestingly, sometimes white items can be the most valuable items in the game, especially if they have many linked sockets. The socketing and crafting nature of the game is one of the most engaging aspects in my opinion, though can be very frustrating if you want something specific. The RNG can be very irritating.
