I hope it doesn't have any gender locks. It is a pet peeve of mine, but not so big that it would deter me from playing/trying out a new MMO. By the way, how rude of that guy to jump out the window and not close it afterwards. Usually there is a pretty high draft that high up and people could easily get the sniffles!

There is some gender/race lock.

Class, race, and gender are all bundled together.  So you pick character presets.  That said, BD say that they are working on many different presets, including female/male versions of each type of class.  So there will be a wizard and a sorceress making up the male and female mage counterparts respectively.  They won't be exactly the same class though.

I think this is a fairly bad decision, personally.  What are they actually achieving in making drastically different male/female versions?  In some ways it's cutting corners, but in other ways it's just giving them more work, and also annoys players who - by and large - expect a lot more customisation.

Even with the gender, race, class lock, I still think this game is fascinating, and maybe this feature will actually distinguish it from contemporaries.  I mean, it's not common to have a developer make a female and a male version of the same class.  Usually, they will just reskin with a male/female model.  So, it's a double edged sword, i guess.

I like the weird quests in this game with minigames. Hopefully there are more.

I like how there is interesting open-world content like this:

This.  Also, there will be safe areas.  Pearl Abyss sill hasn't decided on a punishment system for PK'ing, apparently.

Whenever a new MMORPG emerges, it's the same #@%& on these boards...

"combat is boring, why it isn't tab targeting", "combat is boring, why is it tab targeting", "why are they trying something new", "why aren't they trying something new"... Damn.

Something that looks this good, exciting and new doesn't come every day, people.

...just tired of seeing posts like "that's not a game for me". WHO CARES if it isn't for you? Move on, nothing to see for you here.

Lol, people who say "same old shit" have no basis to say that about Black Desert.

Sorry I didn't realise all games had open world gameplay with no loading screens, active combat, siege warfare, non-instanced housing, parkour, GRASS.  Get real, people!  Hardly any games that have come out in the previous generation have such features.  And no game on the horizon has some of these either.

The only recent games created in a similar vein are Darkfall and Mortal Online.  And they might as well not even exist for how crappy they are.

I played the CBT for a couple of hours, its pretty rough technically.

The character creation was very limited, I know its a beta but it was annoying to see 100s of clones running around.

Combat took some getting used to, depending on what you do with WASD keys while pressing skills you get different attacks, which vary per class.

Not too bad just felt clunky just like rest of the game.

Language barrier was a major thing for me again just like in ArcheAgd on Korean servers, but Black Desert has a long way to go IMO.

Decent for first beta just needs a lot more work.

I played on 670GTX (ssd, 16GB ram, i7) and it was choppy on max settings for me.

Character creation is usually quite limited in early tests.  Usually not as limited as Black Desert was, though.  However, Archeage was basically beset by the same limitations in early beta tests too.

If you look at the range of variation in armour and faces in NPCs, it suggests that there will be a lot of variation for characters too.   Since you cannot select your gender, class, and race in this game & are locked by the class you pick, there will obviously always be that limitation on variety.  However, I think once they add more classes and more character creation tools, it will not be as overtly limited as it is in beta right now.

Ok i give up. I guess i'm still gonna read more news for darkfall and mortal online. There's really nothing better than these 2 games and i wish there was.

The only thing i hate so far about black desert is for the same reason i hate the combat system of Tera online. When ever they're striking, it's like their feet are stuck on the ground. As a player, it's not fun and it feels too clunky. It makes me ask this. How can you dodge and attack at the same time? You can't so at the end, the pvp will most likely be more like a button masher.

I want no part in this.

Well you can still autoattack and do basic attack while moving in Black Desert. So there's that.  Anyway, I think being able to do every attack while also dodging is kind of stupid.

The sad part is it seems the quality of graphics is not going to be as good as early indications gave us.What i see is the same level of texture quality as say FFXI but with a higher capacity in texture size and ability to have  a little more clarity than a lot of f2p games.

None of the clothing looks to be of HD quality, something that looked might be the case in early marketing videos.

lol, what?

Is this game going to be a space ship flight simulator like EVE or is it actually going to have alternative gameplay mechanics for running around in the game world on foot as well?  And what level of character customisation is there?

Maybe some folks (like me) don't read hype or invest time in waiting for games to come out. I take them as I find them and let the gameplay sell me on the game. Not the hype.

thanks for the autobiography.

Back to the topic, I think this game is gaining traction despite originally not having very much hype even though it had two more trailers than a game like Everquest Next which had a level of hype which was not at all commensurate with what people knew about that game.  But there are things which hold BD back, which is the fact that it's Korean and there is no guarantee of western publication anytime soon & also the fact that there is some degree of class/gender/race lock in the game which many people aren't comfortable with.

Black Desert is now 2nd on the hype meter at MMORPG, so I think people are starting to pay attention.  Hopefully it doesn't dissipate due to delayed localisation (see Archeage).

You just compared the monster that is Square Enix to these small independent Korean developers....

The point is they should be taking actions to release simultaneously, rather than waiting until after they've already released in Korea & after interest has already dried up .

I think the fact that they refer to classes as "characters" is evidence that the class system will not have very much diversity.

You're making terrible assumptions. In fighting games they refer to the playable "classes" as characters but they are much more diverse than any class in games such as WoW. Whilst it might be true that the classes will lack diversity in the final product, calling them "Characters" is no proof what so ever that they will be.

It's like saying "I know GW2 would have terrible classes because they called them professions" Also, he referred to them as classes as well in the video. I think that he is just struggling a bit with the language barrier.

I was hardly making assumptions when every video and interview in which the devs are asked about their "class" system, the devs clearly go on to lay out the fact that their "characters" will not allow you to change race nor gender.

I watched a gameplay video where the interviewer asked "you can play a giant race in this game, right?" And then the representative was like "yes, you can play the giant character."  And the interviewer persisted and asked them whether you could play a thief character as a giant, and the devs were completely confused by this question & needed the question clarified and reclarified like a million times, suggesting that their confusion arose because race & character & class to them is completely synonymous.  And it's not like this is a single incident, it happens in every interview and on their facebook page.

They are releasing "characters", not "classes".  You choose your character (which comes with a preset race and gender & set of actions, much like Vindictus).

We should make a kickstarter project to get this published in the west

Agree with most others. Everything about this game- the landscape, structures, character models, etc-  is beautiful EXCEPT for one major thing:

That action-based combat looks like utter shit and is totally out of place.

It's a shame really. This had the potential to be great, with high marks for stunning visuals, quality realism, and a fantasy style done right. Why did they have to foul it up with that overly-colorful, flashy, speedy, over-the-top, cliched, unrealistic-looking combat that doesn't fit the style of the game at all?

If only they made the combat feel real and visceral!

It's hardly that over-the-top.  I'm fairly hard to please, aesthetically speaking, & yet even I personally have no problem with the combat system in Black Deserts being the way it is.  I suppose they could tone it down a notch, but it seems fine to me all the same.  Maybe I've played too many trashy MMOs (fireworks displays for every attack) and they've desenzitised me a little.

Its awesome that they were able to rebuild an MMO in a year but its a bit disappointing that some features that were talked about numerous times before are several still updates away.

Its even more disappointing that they are willing to devote some time and effort to fixing Quality of Life issues. Yeah, server issues come first but I doubt that the programmers that would add quest tracking back into the game(for some stupid reason it was removed in phase 4 beta) would be the same people upgrading server queue system.

Also, disappointed to hear that they are unwilling to look at Fates. The experience gains from a full party chaining Fates is practically an exploit but the attitude suggests they are going to ignore it and hope it goes away.

Im really liking FF14 despite the issues but there are definite problems that need fixed and not everyone is going to patient and wait until some future update.

We dont want promises or apologies, we want action.

More like 2.5 years, and they cut a lot of corners also.  The zones were decreased in size to like 1/50th of their original size.  They REMOVED 90% of the original cutscenes and never put in replacement ones.  Most of this is probably just a result of ps3 limitations though, to be fair.  i guess there's only so much they could have done.
