Hey all, like the title says... new player returning from about 5 months post launch and I'm a little overwhelmed.

So many things have changed, including the F2P aspect. I'm not even sure what 'perks' I have from buying it at launch and having multiple months subbed but I did notice I had about 2500 coins/credits in my account.

I had a few questions...

1) Is there a popular/healthy server that I should play on? I usually play on PVE servers (yay carebear) though I haven't even decided if I'm going to go Republic or Empire yet, nor do I know what class to play. Usually when server merges happen, a lot of people flock to 1-2 servers and at the login screen they're all listed as "standard".

2) Speaking of classes, I have multiple toons in the 20's (Trooper, Smuggler, JC, Agent) and I could even consider rolling a brand new character due to not remembering how to play these. But mainly I want to play for the class stories (and well, I've always loved Star Wars and heard there's been some real good changes here). Out of ALL the class stories, which was your favorite and most recommended to play? In addition, out of the 4 listed above, which would you play? I'll likely dabble in raids/flashpoints down the road but it's a secondary goal currently.

3) I heard they are introducing player housing? Has this been launched yet or is it apart of the new xpac?

4) What do you buy with the Cartel Coins? Is there something I should be picking up right away that I can't live without in game?

5) Any other tips/tricks that can help me I'd greatly appreciate it. It's very overwhelming to log in to characters with no concept of how to play or where to go (which is why I'm actually considering just rolling a new toon from scratch)

Sorry if this post is a bit scattered and unfocused, kinda how I felt when I started playing yesterday lol ;)

Cheers!

I'm looking for advice on a solid DPS class to boost up. Something that's mostly simple to learn since I won't have much experience in that particular class and can also solo well, as I do generally solo quite a lot (usually just timeless isle, IoT, old raids, etc).

I'm not much of a hardcore raider, will dabble in LFR and flex but nothing higher than that... so "top DPS" at BiS isn't a huge concern for me. Also looking ahead to the Xpac as well but there's so little info available on that it's hard to know much at this stage.

Currently I main a Warlock which I do quite enjoy but I bought the WOD xpac and got a free boost, so looking for a second toon. Been considering a Hunter, a Rogue or a Druid but I really don't have any investment in any classes (though I do enjoy being stealthy) :) So just looking for some general advice and feedback from people. Any suggestions are very welcomed! Thanks!

From what I understand, GW2 has produced superb earnings using the B2P+cash shop model. NCSoft owns Carbine and is publishing the game. If B2P/Cash Shop is working for GW2 and all indications are that it is, then there is a pretty good chance Wildstar will offer something very similar.

"Hybrid". Well, B2P+Cash Shop is a hybrid. It's almost F2P+CS, but you also have to buy the box. So, there is a possibility that WS will use the same model as GW2. "What if it's a hybrid between the GW2 model and the P2P  model"? I see that as a possibility as well. It could offer the GW2 model, plus an optional subscription that would include an exclusive benefit and maybe some cash shop currency included in the deal.

As to GW2, NCSoft doesn't break down their revenue numbers in much detail. GW2 box sales dropped by 50% vs. the previous quarter, but most MMOs today would be overjoyed to still be selling as many new boxes half a year+ after release. Even with the decline in Box sales, NCSoft Revenue was up over 300% vs. the same quarter a year ago and a good portion of that likely came from GW2 cash shop sales.

I love the GW2 business model and have spent a fair amount in the cash shop since release. However, I'd have no problem at all if Wildstar added an optional sub fee, with reasonable benefits, as long as the game is still playable and fun without the sub.

NCsoft is just the publisher.  That doesn't mean diddly shit.  They are two completely different games made by two completely different game developers.

GW2 only did good, because they intentionally didn't create any end game, or devote any resources to continually pumping out end game updates.  That is extremely expensive.  WS has 50-70% of its team devoted to doing just that!

Just to clarify, Carbine, just like Arenanet, is a wholly owned subsidiary of NCSoft. I assume they have a similar level of creative control, but NCSoft makes the business decisions, even if done so with input from the studio.

I stand by my post and reasoning. Also, any variation on the GW2 business model may provide some insight into how NCSoft views the results of that model.

My take is that the GW2 business model will be one of the most prominent business models for future MMOs, with straight F2P being the the other most prevalent. There seems to be some room for an optional monthly subscription with value added benefits in the mix, but it has to be truly optional. The once dominant P2P  model is making it's exit and once a few more major AAA titles opt out, that business model will likely die a rapid death.

Lets hope the hell not, because GW2 isn't a real MMO. In large part due to the business model they chose. There is absolutely no evidence that P2P is a dying model! Stop stating your opinions as facts! GW2 wasn't subscription based, because it was never designed to be from the start! That means no end game, no intention of updating end game. Over half of the WS staff is only working on end game! That is nearly HALF of their current development cost going to something GW2 barely spent any time on.

I really have no idea what your trying to say here. What does P2P have to do with having end game content?

Guild wars makes PLENTY of money from their cash shop - and it's not pay to win either.... their lack of end game was a horrible mis-management of their development resources, but that isn't because they don't have a subscription. They have tons of money to implement more end game content they just choose to go with the living story route, which I could give two shits about personally even though I quite like GW2.

Oh and lastly, how is it not an real MMO? I love how you say "GW2 isn't a real MMO" then blast the person for stating his opinions as fact LOL. Hypocrite much?

It seemed pretty simple. You are stating bad opinions and claiming they are facts. They are not. The p2p model is still solid, and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

GW2 was a cheap game to make, and to continue to develop content for. That is why it is profitable! Their lack of end game was not a horrible mismanagement. It was intentional. That is the type of game they tried to make. That is what you can always expect when an MMO is B2P.

Yet, you claim you want more of this? Are you delusional? B2P is a MMO formula that will always result in a lackluster game, like GW2.

Also note, that just because the servers are still up doesn't mean the game is making money. Lots of games maintain servers at a loss for years without any subsequent revenue other than a few additional box sales. You can't say they are making tons of money from their cash shop, unless you have actual evidence to support that.

Its not a real MMO, because it has no end game content. It has no endurance! It doesn't meet the standards of massive. It is merely a single player game with some multiplayer.

Am I delusional? Only took you one post to get insulting eh? Boy you sure have a lot of assumptions about me when you don't really know what the fuck you're talking about.... I guess I should know better about posting on these forums. Full of people who know pretty much everything about online gaming but yet have never coded a day in their life. B2P is indeed very profitable, if it wasn't you wouldn't have CEO's and executives considering those payment methods as well. Ohhh right... you know more than those people too I'm sure. With your vast business knowledge and fully operational MMO that you've been working on in your studio.

And for the record, I'm not saying P2P is dead, far from it... in fact, you can charge people $20 dollar subs with an $80 dollar game if the game is actually a GOOD game to play and it wouldn't be an issue at all. It's all about the quality. But the fact that there's only about 15 games left on the market with this type of payment model SHOULD tell you something (I'm sure it doesn't, but it should). I also know GW2 is making money because their quarterly report indicates they are making money. You know, those funny stat things that they have to give investors during their conference calls?

Yeahhh I know exactly where this thread is going. Rawr P2P is the ONLY model worth talking about and everyone who disagrees with me is wrong!!! Keep at it though, don't lose the good fight.... I'm done wasting my time on this site.

I don't really understand how it could release so fast... I can't even find that much information about it :)

I know they have a big announcement August 2nd, I suspect we'll at least get a release date but not much else?

All of you posting negatively on something that hasn't even been released yet are cutting yourselves short.

Imagine yourselves 10 years ago, and WoW had a video prior to it's release and you saw it, well you would have been very impressed. What makes something new and looks like WoW so terrible?  This just may be Vanilla WoW steered in the right direction.

Have fun in life and hope. /shrug

You are assuming everyone is basing it completely on the game play videos, yet, no one here actually knows WHO is the beta and who isn't (NDA and all).

But yes, have fun in life and remember.... ass-u-ming does something something....

Pretty dull actually. Another failboat in the making. Some devs just never learn.

The mass majority of the higher up devs for carbine studios are from vanilla wow/TBC. The only thing they have to learn from is the tyrant of an MMO they created. It's what they are familiar and good at if youre into WoW. Things will be familiar when 17 of WoWs devs are working on the game.

Unrelated, these videos don't do this game justice at all. Wildstar is basically WoW 2.0 just done proper. If you enjoy wow or enjoyed wow at some point this game is for you. If you never liked wow or have no interest in a linear quest hub/progression raiding game this game is very much not for you.

"Done proper" is very subjective.

Otherwise I agree with everything you wrote.

I'm not too worried. He grabbed the soldier path which to me seemed like it was already going to be more of the same since it has a focus on killing, aka kill quests.  I am interested to see what the settler path actually entails because that is one of the more unique ways of leveling that they were supposed to introduce

Sadly, you're going to be disappointed.... it's almost the exact same, though there's differences... can't really speak on it, will have to wait until open beta to try it out :)

To clarify, there's no unique way of leveling in wildstar. It's all quest hub after quest hub, and very linear.

INSIDE those zones will be different based on what path you chose but it makes very little difference to how a character will level.

Of all the things the guy in the video could have done to show what the game is about, he playes a soldier and quests to kill things. Really? I fault the person playing more than the game.

Not really... he started off level 1 and unfortunately that's just how it is when you start the game

Even if he picked an explorer path, he'd STILL be killing mobs the exact same way, but his "personal quest path" or whatever you want to call it will differ on how that character progressed on THOSE quest lines. It's still absolutely identical when it comes to the normal quest hub routine that every other games have. Playing as an explorer doesn't mean you won't be killing a million mobs on the way to level cap, you'll just have a special set of quests that are added to that path...

I don't really understand why people are ripping others who don't like the gameplay.

It IS very WoW like... which can be seen as both good and bad. The problem is it feels completely the same as any other themepark game and most of us are tired of that genre. The opening 5 levels are pretty boring too and I think it takes way too long to kill a level 3 mob compared to what it should. There's no real feeling of being a powerful soldier to save the planet, which is one of the problems with Wildstar in my opinion.

Even the different paths apart from Settler and Explorer are pretty lame in my opinion. It didn't really give any extra edge to the game that would otherwise be there... I also hate the linear quest lines, quest hubs, etc. At least other games are going into the more dynamic route (GW2 events, FFXIV FATE system, etc). It's a MUCH better model for leveling (again, all just my opinion).

Will it be successful? Impossible to know... but Im willing to bet they are going hard after all the ex-WoW players and that's the market. Nothing wrong with that but not likely something I'll personally jump into a play either...

Yep - that's what most people bitch about.

I think Gazillion should implement this... make it a 25 man limit to enter the servers, per zone, per character. Then you'd only ever have one hero on each map at a time, giving everyone a complete, unique feeling.

The ONLY problem I see here is the 6 hour queue times, but I think it would be for the best and make the fans much happier.

As a side note, actually really like this game... the heroes are overpriced in the cash shop in my opinion but that's only because I like to try out a bunch of different characters when I first start playing ANY new game. Overall though - enjoying it more than I enjoyed D3 already and only ~8 hours in. That said, I DID finish D3 Inferno so I guess I am slightly hypocritical. See how long I last here but so far it's pretty interesting, minus the annoying bugs that pop up from time to time.

Good healer class

Also is there any way for a Bard to get a direct targetted heal? I understand that a Rogue isn't a healing class, but I would like a way to at least be able to keep myself up while soloing. I find with the Cleric it's survivability is amazing.

Thanks to everyone who replied, I appreciate the insight on what is most common/most useful late game. I currently have all characters to level 20 to try them out, I was definitely best with the Cleric and the Rogue.

Which brings me to my next question

I just started getting into Rift, so take my words as the advice of someone who hasn't experienced end-game.

I've been reading a LOT on forums and other guide sites to try to figure out what I want to play.  I had considered Bard, but I would rather play a class that can swing a giant sword/axe/hammer instead of swinging two small things at once.

If you're looking for a class that can heal and switch roles to tanking or DPS, Rogue is another option.  The Bard soul doesn't seem to be regarded as capable of taking the place of the Cleric/Mage as the main healer in all situations, but the buffs and AoE healing seem to be welcome in raids.  The Tactician soul also seems to have some AoE healing as well.

Instead of asking which class is good at one role, pick the class that has the playstyle you enjoy the most.  Every class can switch their role by changing builds.

It's kinda ironic you mentioned this because I was having a TON of fun with the Rogue's Bard as well. The thing I found, especially in PVP BG matches was that I had absolutely zero burst healing. I couldn't even self-heal enough to take out an attacker, though the buffs were excellent I felt like I was running around buffing more than I was doing anything else, and I don't know how useful I was really being. I since have just picked up the SL xpac so I plan to try out the Tactician build now and see if that makes things a little more interesting :)

I did really enjoy the cleric's survival skills. I should mention I really love to PVP so a good chunk of my leveling is going to come in the battlegrounds, just based on where I end up spending a lot of my time.

Thanks everyone again for your comments!

Good healer class

Hey all just like the title says, looking for a good healer class to play in RIFT.

If I'm looking at this correctly my two choices are Mage Chloromancer and Cleric classes?

Out of the two, which is a better route to go? I played RIFT briefly at launch but haven't in a long time, so Im basically trying to start from scratch and relearn. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

At last Trion!

took you a while....

f2p does not solve the reason why people left in the first place...

No it's not... but soon as I saw it was F2P I subbed up a month to see all the content updates and decided to give it another try. I also plan to continue once the f2P model is implemented. So far Im loving the new changes

Same on my server, though I was one of the new one :-)

Resubbed and having fun. It's much better than when I played at launch.

People will hate this but no sub fees are the way to go. The old model is mostly dead and it's a myth that content stops after dropping the sub model. In fact many games are making more money since going this route.
Hate to say it but it's because amd sucks complete shit. I had almost the exact rig as you and had problems with a lot of games. Picked up a new mb and went with an i5 now I can max my settings.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but that's the truth of the matter. Nothing you can or will do on your machine will help, I know, I spent countless hours trying everything to get it to flow smooth.... Even going with an ssd drive with a new os install and all new drivers didn't help.

Nope it absolutely won't.... I don't think anything will ever be the "next big thing".

You'll get fun/good niche games like EVE, GW2, DFUW, etc that'll fit people's needs, but there won't be any colossal giant like Warcraft was during it's time.

Wildstar is pretty solid, and the path design is refreshing and pretty interesting but I don't see the staying power long term either. I could be personally burned out of MMO games too, though I am enjoying AoW and a few others right now (though very casually compared to how much I used to play these things).

TL;DR version, no, not by a long shot but it'll certainly have a strong player base like most of the other top performing games do (not named WoW).

Do people still really think a sub based model is "better" and therefore makes X game better as a result?

[mod edit]

In my experience, don't buy AMD. I know lots of people swear by it but Ive had NOTHING but problems.

I just bought a new intel CPU and my PC's performance went about 10 times as what it did with a 6 core AMD processor. I'm really starting to hate AMD and their horrible gaming performances, so I'll never buy from them again.

Intel all the way (and I used to ONLY buy AMD, always liked them but lately it's been just garbage).
