No real comment. I just can't resist replying to a message that tells me not to respond. I'm ornery like that.

Not everyone plays MMORPGs for hours at a time, trying to max out level and find their way to min/maxer nirvana. It is quite possible to bop back and forth between 2 or even three games. Chances are you won't all be playing them the same amount, but it might be nice if you're playing EQ2 to go mess around in EQ1 or SWG or Planetside at will, whenever you feel like it. Games only consume as much of your time as you choose. I thought the station pass was a good deal for me at $25 when I was playing EQ2 and still visiting friends in EQ1 off and on. I made use of extra character slots in both games. At $30 a month... eh... not such a good deal. I trimmed back my EQ2 roster and gave up EQ1 altogether. The character slots were a nice bonus, but not worth paying full price for two games when I am playing one more than the other. If another company had two or more games I wanted to play and could offer me a discount on multiple subscriptions on a centralized account or an all-access pass, I would at least consider it. |

Originally posted by gnomexxx Hot zones have a higher zone experience modifier. That is, you get more experience per kill than you would in those zones if they weren't "hot". They change the hot zones every few months, and you can find that info in the patch messages. |

My husband just started reading this site again, so I will try to direct him to this thread to give you some concrete specifics on what you need and where to get the stuff. He was a mage with high research skill. I just get the items needed and poke him or someone else with research skill to combine the items for me. You can also find researched spells for sale in the bazaar sometimes. |

I liked the Pass when I was playing both EQ1 and EQ2 for $25 a month, and got bonus character slots in both games. It wasn't worth it for the extra slots, however, when it went up to $30. I only have time to really play one game at a time. With the discount, I didn't mind having the other around to mess with off and on. For the full price of subscribing to both, though, I gave up my Pass and went back to a single game subscription. If I were playing 3 games, even just in passing, it would be a great deal, though, even if they don't add those other games. I wouldn't be surprised if the price goes up again if they add two more new games... |

Like most other people posting here, I've played a lot of games (UO, EQ, AC, AO, SWG, DAoC, L2, FFXI, WoW, etc.) and I still recommend EQ2. It's better than most of what's out there and they are moving forward with additions and improvements all the time. It's also the game I have played/paid for most recently. If people come along here (or elsewhere) and ask for a fantasy MMORPG, I pretty much recommend LoTRO, EQ2, or WoW, depending on what they are ask for. All three of those games have some good things to offer to a new player. EQ2 may not have been your cup of tea, but it seems that many people are enjoying it since... well, since they made it more enjoyable. :) Frankly, I still like EQ1 and L2, the former being where I have spent the most time and the latter being another than I've played recently. I just have a hard time recommending either of those to a new player.

Originally posted by Rhoklaw I think it would be possible to add new content via updates or expansions to a MMORPG without gutting, unbalancing, and/or ditching the old game. EQ may be beyond any innovation like that, but I don't think you're going to have a lot of longevity in a game that never gets an expansion of any sort. While I agree that it gets harder the farther out you get from release, I think that TSS was an opportunity for new players to come in and not be left to fend for themselves all alone in newbie/lowbie zones. I don't think that potential was as well promoted as it could have been in advertising that expansion. I know some people want to return to the old days and lament the consolidation of low level zones by funnelling everyone through the tutorial and Crescent Reach. It does bring the low level game into the present and get the few low level people into the same zones, wearing "current" newbie gear. There are reasons why high level people might come to CR (for tradeskilling or armor quests) so newbies/alts still get to rub elbows with people they might otherwise never see until they finish leveling. Overall, it is a good thing, and it would have been a good point to bring new people in, I think. It does seem strange, considering the history of Norrath, that high elf paladins and troll shadowknights now mingle peacefully in the halls of Crescent Reach. And at a gut level, I'll always be from Neriak and the Freeport that only exists in memory now. I was really surprised to find out that at lot of the people I played EQ with most recently had only come to the game in 2004 or 2005. That seemed really late in the game already to me. On a few occasions, I saw some /ooc questions in PoK that were clearly from people who had only played WoW prior to landing in EQ. I am sure populations are on the decline, but I was amazed then at how many people were new or relatively new.

I would much rather play one character with other people, and that's part of why I walked away from EQ1 in January. People just want to play, and LFG is not playing. |

Mages solo pretty well too, FWIW. My husband soloed from time to time all the way through, right up to level 75, when a group wasn't readily available. I soloed my mage (playing almost exclusively solo) up to about 62 while wearing REALLY crappy gear. Getting your pet buffed and dressed in PoK before you head out helps, since it is all about picking your battles/targets/zones and pet tanking. It may not be fast experience all the time, but it can be done without a huge learning curve or a lot of finesse. |

But they had all the top end group stuff for TSS and were collecting powersources for it the last time I played. They certainly weren't hurting for gear! In my last round of playing EQ1, my observation was that a lot of the people I knew in raiding guilds only grouped if they needed to get to a new level cap or collect new AAs. Otherwise, they ONLY raided, for the most part. That was a big enough of a commitment. Has anyone else observed this, or do I just hang around with freaks? Anofalye hates raiding. If someone who raids is even 0.01% better or more effective in a group than someone who doesn't raid, Anofalye will not be happy. The fact that there's been a lot of attention paid to the single group and three-groups-or-less crowd in recent expansions will not dull or diminish Anofalye's Mighty Hatred of Raiding (Rk. IV). In a game where effectiveness is a function of HP/AC/MANA/(stats generally) + Level/AAs (aside from the skill of a player at his or her class), creating a scenario where raiders get gear that makes them better at raiding but not better at grouping seems... ah... unlikely at best. (EDIT: Redundant redundancies removed and deleted.) |

I normally drink coffee, tea, or some caffeinated soda to get going. I drink a lot of coffee and tea just because I enjoy those beverages anyway. What really wakes me up is my mom calling me at 6am to give me a weather report. You know, "It's cold out! Bundle up!" or "There's a heat warning. Stay in the AC!" ... Grrrrrr.... I get the weather channel too, Mom! The irritation alone keeps me awake for a couple of hours afterward. |
