SWTOR is a good game but that is all. It is just an average MMO with a Star Wars skin. Now that is not a bad thing and is fun but not even close to having what it takes to be a king. Personally I am holding off on it until it goes F2P and it will.

It may eventually but your going to be in for a very long wait . Its breaking records in terms of units sold and even if it retains 50 percent of the million people that re-ordered it without selling a single unit upon release it would have plenty of people to keep it subscription based for a year or two . Of course theres going to be many more playing than that so if you think this game will be free to play before 3-4 years ( at least ) your totally deluded .

Box sales means good marketing not good game. Wait 6 months before making assumptions about a mediocre game in a known IP.

SWTOR has no chance!

completely agree with Danny on this one. He summed it up very nicely and i think time will prove him right at the end of the initail 30 days when 70-80% of ppl fail to re-sub

Well said wise friend, we will watch this eating popcorn as we do with old repeatable movies.

"In short, SWTOR is great for Star Wars fans, but mediocre for everyone else."

Hopefully new games will build on the immersion aspect and take us to a new level that SW:TOR laid the foundation for. It truly is a breath of fresh air.

So when that happens will be the end of the mmorpg genre. When you have no choices to rople play but to follow a stupid premade storyline.

I just moved from RIFT to SWTOR and I totally regret even buying this game now .

You are not the only one kid.

If you are a fanboy it should be good for you. If you are not, is the same as playing wow in space but with worse combat and more bugs.

I wonder where have you sticked in, this immersive candy of yours?

Like the host said, It has revolutionized the MMO industry.

What is revolutionary about coying wow?

It is not about replicating success, no one can do that. The point is, success leads.

If you had 2 games which one has lots of subs and the other has closed down soon after release, you can guess what people like more if you try to create similar experience.

Developers follow the trend, and that is surely proven as working.

I have to disagree!

Developers make 80% of a game profit on the box sales. Creating content  for a game based on subs are not as profitable as box sales. That why SOE usally charges $60 for big updates.

This is the MMORPG box sales cycle:

1- Company get a well known IP

2- Company advertise luring the potential mmos lovers and the IP lovers to their potential game

3- Company  create an expectation, make promises about the content that they do not intend to fullfill

4- Company sell millions of boxes at the release getting the invested money back + a huge profite

5- Company deliver a mediocre game, made to sell boxes only

6 -Company move to another big IP leaving a small second class dev team to create regular content for those fanboys that still playing that mediocre game they developed for box sales purpose only

6 - The cycle restart  ...

I don’t have a problem paying $15 a month. I like this game a lot; mainly because it’s BioWare and Star Wars. Even if this game was rated the worst game of all time, I would still like it because it’s BioWare and Star Wars.

Dude, this does not make sense at all. Are you a share holder of Bioware or Lucas Arts? Why would you play a horrible game only because it has a brand name on the box?

Generally speaking it has zero to do with the above. The main point of it all is to reiterate that we expect more than what we have been getting for our money.

Most 'haters' have been in the MMO scene for many years and are sick of having the same shit but with a slightly different smell being served on their plates and told to like it.

'Haters' will endlessly post to try and make the 'fanbois' see past the Corporate marketing hype and convert them into the so called 'hater' camp, but when in reality the 'haters' have the most love for the genre as a whole and want to see it improved, not just cashed in on which has been the trend of AAA developers since WoW became huge and gained mega bucks.

At the core its not about Themepark vs. Sandbox, Indie vs. AAA or Pirates vs Ninja's, its about quality and the genre moving forward instead of its current stagnant state.

What complete and utter rubbish. People who spew serial attacks on forums are not crusaders for truth and love. The quality of SWTOR is the highest at launch anyone has put out in years. Some people may not like it but it is well made.

I disagree.

First. I have seen way better game releases before. For Bioware is their obligation, at least, for 5 years of development, have a smooth launch, do not praise them for the minimal achievements.

Second. Add up $150.000.000 + Known IP + Experienced Company + 5 Years = (what do you expect?)  Did they gave us a great game? NOT, they have 10 times of everything that Trion have in money, Ip, time and gave us a inferior game.

No excuses, they did a crappy job, give up defending them.

Let me guess, maybe because it sold millions of boxes. Has hundreds of servers packed with people and some with huge queues... While the sandbox hater crowd keeps crying against swtor on the forums =P

Give it 6 months... 6 months or GW2 release, whatever comes first. Then we should talk about ghost servers and merging, player migration, non-existent end-game content etc..

I title this composition "The Return Of The King"

The humungous wishful thinking you guys are doing is fantastic entertainment, putting up unknown quantities against the biggest IP on the planet is just delusion.

Well WoW had no big Ip and made history, AoC, DCUO and LOTRO have a known IP and failed. All went f2p. Rift has not known IP and is a sucess for  Trion standards.  You logic failed!

I like this game and I like themeparks and I like SWTOR. It doesn't mean I don't like nor have ever played sandbox and it doesn't mean that I am some young noob; I am 39 for heaven's sake and have been playing RPGs since I was 10 years old. But this patronising shit from self-titled nostalgia-ridden old-skoolers never ceases on these forums.

So, you are 39 and have been playing Multiplayer Online Games since you were 10 years old? In other worlds you were playing mmorpgs since 1982 or 29 years ago?

Well,  in what type of computer you played mmo's  back in 1982? Was in a CP-500 like this? As far as I know. There were no internet as we know it  today back then, but only for military purposes. Maybe you were playing mmo's  telepathically. Who knows.

great, another thread about 'haters'... Exciting :/

'hater'.... what a juvenile spew of a word used to discredit and dismisss another's point of view that disagrees with yours without having to look deeper at the view expressed.

Look, negative opinions are not 'hate'. They usually are valid critical observations. You need to get past simplistic generic labels and treat each individuals view as a unique thing IMO.

I get that it takes more work and is more complicated to do it that way, but honestly you get far better conversations.

It doesn't go on for a few days... but we're talking weeks of dedicated hatred.

What goes through this person's mind?

  • Are they angry that other people are having fun in a game they don't like?
  • Do they believe they are fighting the good fight by trashing X kind of game so developers try Y?
  • Are they thinking they'll save their current game of choice?
I want to close with an observation also... I see a lot of haters refer to fanboys (I'll be fair and use both terms) as sheep or lemmings... however, a lot of the hate threads have the same group of people posting support of said hate thread...
So is there a magic number of people that support becomes sheep?  If 10 people are smart folks who don't like a game, but there are 100 people who do?  Why exactly are the 100 sheep?  What if it were 50/50?  Just wondering....

This is not true! You guys are creating another illusion about reality again. SWTOR is a big disapointment for millions who were expecting a different game. We have the right to criticize and express our feelings wherever we want to, in the way we want. I played the BETA and had to cancel my pre-order because imo the game suck! Can you live with this?

Now you are saying that we are doing this as a vengeance or that we are making this up. You are wrong kid. If you like that second class mmo go ahead and play it. But do not expect people that does not like the game to be silent. Why would I shup up?

But I do ask you. Why are you so concern about the people that thinks SWTOR stinks? The game is a bad joke, we expected a mmorpg that would make a difference and we got this WOW prototype instead, full of bugs, with bad animations, dumb mobs and mediocre combat that dont even have an auto-attack.

Take away the SW IP theme, the voice overs. What you got? A mediocre mmo!  Can you face the truth? No you cant!

I played DCUO BETA as well, I said this at  the time " this game is not worth of $60. This game is going ft2 in 6 months" Guess what? I was right! Same thing with SWTOR, there is no content in that game to keep anyone playing that  pass level 50. People will get tired of the "pew pew" of lightsabers. In time they will migrate to GW2. Can you live with this reality!

Im saving my money for GW2, Blade & Soul and The Secret World. Better games as far we can see, at least with better graphics and better combat animations.

Do you think EA, Bioware or Lucas Arts care about you? They dont. the money they make on Box sales cover for the expenses and make them a GREAT profit. After that, they give a **** if you stay playing or not. They dont need the subs after the box sales. Welcome to the World.

EDIT> Bioware doesn't know how to make an mmo, but they know how to sell boxes. There is where the money is "Box Sales" SOE knows it, EA knows it. They make games to sell boxes then they move on to another popular IP.

Now, stop crying about us. Go play your SWTOR while you have friends to play with. You have 6 months kids, 6 months or  GW2  release whatever comes first.

The biggest reason for NOT to play it:

True hurts sometimes.

Well, NOBODY will paying subs in 6 months from today . It will go FREE TO PLAY SOON!

Because of this
