Masters of Magic! AMAZING game! World spells, spells that could affect cities and landscape! We need an MMORPG like that! oh WOW would that be awesome.

will fill that need for a solid, rewarding, fun to play experience?

Having tried just about every other existing MMORPG released thus far nothing has quite filled the gap created by quitting Blizzards juggernaut.  Rift came close but didnt scratch the itch for me.  Aion was OK but too Asian and a little laggy.

I share the view of many of you on here that TERA is a step in the right direction but I havent tried it yet so I cannot speak to gameplay.  TERA does look pretty though.

Having never played Guild wars 1 I am following Guild Wars 2 closely and  hoping its the smash hit we need.

Are you playing a MMO at the moment that keeps you addicted as WOW did?

I think it's great that you're thinking about that feeling, however, WoW, Rifts, and Tera are not MMORPGs... they are merely online games.

Having said that, I have no doubt that a developer will successfully overcome the degenerative idiocy that pumps out these crappy cookie cutters and brings a game that will show gamers out there, like Skyrim did, that RPGs require innovation, and for an MMORPG to be considered an MMORPG it requires both innovation and heart!

If you go by popularity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#PC

I wouldn't put too much stock in that list as it seems to be whacked. Hell Skyrim alone sold more than 10 million units by December 31st, 2011 and it isn't even listed. Doesn't seem to acurate to me just like most of Wikipedia.

Bren

It's Wikipedia, it's almost guranteed to be inaccurate, it's a good place to start though, and Skyrim is the first RPG to beat out FPS's in 15 years, and the two top selling FPS's at that and at the same time, Modern Warfare and Battlefield.

2. Baldur's Gates

3. Ultima Online

4. BioShock

5. Skyrim

This is tough to do so I included three older games that I loved and two newer ones, but Planescape:Torment will always have a place in my heart. Ah, the days of Morte the floating, talking skull... and of course waking up in the morgue.

I'd say sub WoW. It is the top MMO for a reason and you may be one of the people who finds it to be their favorite. While it isn't my favorite I have played all of the expansions to Level Cap and have raided/PvPed all of them.

And McDonald's is one top selling restaurants for a reason too. Doesn't make it the best food or even food that you should even eat.

Both WoW and McDonalds are top for the same reason. You get in, get what you need and get out.

I wouldn't call it food, however, Rift is a subcategory of WoW... sadly. :( It's worse than WoW food, if it could be called that.

WoW is a far superior game and is much more enjoyable while leveling.  The quests are much better, and the world, although cartoonish, is much more lively and engaging.

Go with WoW.

LMAO

Your kidding right?

RIft blows away Wow in every way. Its no contest. I just resubbed to RIFT and the devs have been hard at work. The game is AMAZING now. You have to check it out.

Many people are coming back due to Conquest, and the server im on, Wolfsbane is very very active. I cant believe how much has gone on since I left.

Wow? Give me a break. Its nothing more then a cartoon with 12 year olds playing these days. People are leaving it in droves, everyone is sick to death of it.

Rift has a more mature player base as well. You dont hear the LRNHOWTOPLAYNOOBSLOLROFLCOPTER hurp durp crap as well.

Rift or WoW?

Puhlease...>RIFT all the way........

Fanboy... Not even a comparison, graphics are nearly irrelevant in this case... I dislike both games, and I can't believe I'm defending WoW, but sadly Rift is a grindfest wow clone, nothing more. Pathetic.

Despite it not being my cupt of tea, WoW is still a well built game, I would strongly recommend it if you have not played it... It can also help with perspective later on, and comparisons... etc..

In a sense, Bioware no longer exist.

Bioware sold out to EA, since when, they have been merged with other dev companies, and just allowed to keep the name.

The only reason they kept the Bioware name is simple really, to trade on it, based on previous successful titles.

I read somewhere, wish I could find it, that the original dev team for Bioware hasn't been there in years and were replaced by EA.

There is no such thing as a WoW-clone, all MMORPGs are in fact clones of the first: Meridian 59!

Um, UO was nothing like Meridian 59. lol. ;)

Do you believe that the MMO genre has been stuck in a rut over the past few years? So does Christopher Lye, the global brand director for ArenaNet, who publicly denounced the post-World of Warcraft trend in the industry as stagnant.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Lye stated that Guild Wars 2 is walking the walk when it comes to genuinely challenging the status quo in the industry. "Honestly, I think the problem is that there's been a lack of change in MMO design and that Guild Wars 2 is a reaction to that," he said. "People will call this risky, but we think it's riskier just to churn out the same MMO that everyone has played before."

Lye pointed to Guild Wars 2's scaling dynamic event system and its action combat as examples as to how ArenaNet is forging its own path. Observing that player consumption of content is "virtually insatiable," Lye said that the team has developed tools to allow it to implement changes and additions to dynamic events in hours, not weeks.

Is this industry stagnation coming to an end? Lye says yes: "We're finally seeing a point where companies realize that they're not going to create the next great MMO by just copying what's come before."

The massive balls this guy has to say this crap and just pretend like Rift never happened is just amazing to me. Are devs just inside a little box where nothing gets in that is happening around them? Can ArenaNET please release this game already so that it can stop riding the hype train?

Rift was and is a WoW Clone... sorry pal... it's also a terrible game to boot. However, I doubt Guild Wars 2 will be so different from the status quo that it will usher in a new era of higher quality "online games", since most out there are not even MMORPGs.. Honestly Skyrim was the last RPG to set standards high, we'll see if Guild Wars 2 can do that for MMOs... I don't see anything that indicates it though, not yet... Of course, I have yet to play it so we'll see.

"We executed one of the largest, most successful and stable launches of any MMO yet in industry history."

/Sigh, this is simply not true.

"to continue to build Star Wars: The Old Republic as one of the most compelling and successful online experiences in the world today. "

/argh! not true!

They bit off more than they could chew... Simply disappointing. I feel terrible for the people who worked on it and are now being let go, but the EA machine is infamous for this.

Monk and Wizard hardcore only, I did play a monk normal for a little while, but I'm spoiled with the hardcore now. As soon as Blizzard puts together East Coast Servers I'll play them more.

I usually use a two handed mace because there is less damage range, so instead of 2 - 40 on a bow, I would get 38 - 40 with a two handed mace, combine that with Glass Cannon, and the Magic Weapon buff, at level 29, I hit between 540 and 560 with the magic missile, using the charged blast rune.

The Arcane orb with obliteration hits for 1200 normally and 1700 on a crit. I have zero problems usually, even on bosses. Belial barely hurt me with Diamond Skin and the Crystal Shell Rune.

As far as the monk goes they are freakin unstoppable, at this point, every time I use spirit I heal 4 points per point spent, so I use the roundhouse kick and am basically fully healed, plus all the Dexterity and dodge... I never see my monk's life go down and she just destroys everything so easily... Even more easily than the wizard.

Game sounds great but PvP obviously isn't on their priority list if it's still in development and he coudn't shed any more light on it (obviously he's got no idea himself) and end game seems to be dungeons, grinding....Zzzz boring.

Too bad sounds like a great game with terribad end game.

Comments like this always make me cringe... "End Game Content" is the worst idea to ever grace online games, no matter how successful they are.

It's funny that there were only ten of us who played this tiny insignificant game, and yet the subject keeps coming up. What's the assertion? A super small group of people are sufficiently spread out and charged with the mission of making SWG look bigger than it was?

The MMO audience in total as of the launch of SWG is some unknowable number. What portion of the total MMO playing population during that time played SWG? Why are there still posts about it after alll this time? And if it was such a small number of people who played such a deficient title wouldn't that have gone away by now?

This argument that SWG was insignificant is weak and boorish

"I agree with most vets the changes weren't good but I also agree with both SOE and Lucas that a star wars mmo should have been more than what SWG was. "

What then should it have been? You must have some ingenious design in mind that was never realized. Want to share it?

That should be an indication as to how much SWG elicited an emotional response from gamers. They became attached to their characters. This is hard to find in video games and hard to convey in video games compared to movies and books not that it is easy to begin with, although Heavy Rain for example did a great job. Planescape: Torment, another good oldy. Perhaps it did not have the subscription count that WoW has but maybe it meant more as a story?

"It's funny that there were only ten of us who played this tiny insignificant game, and yet the subject keeps coming up."

Perhaps SWG was far bigger, in value not necessarily numbers, than you feel it was...

Well I am a fan of SWTOR but only because I am a star wars fan. I think there are good things about the game but after playing for over three months I have to say I am disappointed. This really pains me to come to terms with but basically this falls short just like the many other MMO's developed since EQ II and WOW.  Lets get some things straight first before I go into detail about how SWTOR has disappointed me.

My first true MMO was SWG and when I first played that game I fell in love. The exploration, crafting, market, social (entertainers) and of course player housing. Granted some aspects of that were not immediately implemented at release however that was just icing on the cake. Than the release of Jump to Lightspeed just really pushed it over the top. Life was good until SOE was not good. They ruined a fantastic game. Since the destruction of a vast star wars universe I have been searching for an MMO like SWG or close to it. These are the MMOs I got stuck playing.

World of Warcraft - Never been a fan of it. Played it for a long time because all my friends were playing it but it lacked all the things that I feel make a great MMO. Blizzard in my opinion is what caused the issue with MMO's these days. Because of their success in making tons of money every maker now thinks they don't need a great crafting, social and housing market to attract players. I just cant play the game anymore. It was absolutely boring to me.

Everquest II -  A poorly done combat game however it had everything I liked about crafting and player housing , but social interaction was weak and like I said before combat wasn't that great. I loved the many different classes and races to choose from but the simple truth that EQ II fell short is because its plainly SOE. They love to get it started than they just love to take a dump on something that is good. Thats their MO for an MMO

I could go into more about the other two games but I wanted to keep it simple. Now here is why SWTOR has completely jacked me over.

PROS:

1. I love the graphics and the combat. I think its a good medium between many other MMOs that I have played.

2. The storyline is pretty good.

3. Companions is pretty cool to have.

4. Its Star Wars

Thats all the pros I can honestly give this game.

CONS:

1. Storyline - I know I said above I liked it however it also is their weak point too. Once played through you really have no desire to play through it again.

2. Voice over's - The voices especially the stupid consular is annoying as can be. Many of the companions are annoying too so I find myself turning down the volume until a cinematic kicks in.

3. Companions - Once again I listed it as a pro but it also is a con. I played many hours of this game and I am telling you there is something wrong with having over 5 companions but really only using one the entire time. The rest are "crafting". It is weak. They really should have added companion selection or customization. Also its ridiculous that we are supposed to RP and the storyline has me marrying my companion but guess what....it turns out that Kira is a two timing slut cause she also married my friend. That dirty punk! ....oh what never mind he married the Kira that has brown hair while my Kira is blonde....*insert eye roll.

4. Crafting - Well I want to sum it up by asking What crafting? This is really a weak point in the game. There is no market and nothing really worth while. Instead of me exploring the galaxy for resources I simply pay creds to have my worthless companion go out and retrieve it for me. I could type forever about the weak crafting and item creation in this game but I wont. Its just bad.

5. Clothing/Armor - I just want to say that my favorite class is the shadow. The problem is that he wears a kilt and a female headdress. Oh wait dont worry I can hide the headdress so that makes it all the better once again *Insert eye roll. Jus like the old days growing up in the 80's I always wanted to be a joe but wanted to use all the gear of cobra and this game is no different.

6. Lack of Player Housing - Sorry just logging out of a ship I cannot decorate or make my own is weak. Not being able to fly home after exploring or completing quests is sad.

7. Exploration -  Pathetic. There really isnt much to explore. You have great story lore planets like Corellia, Tython etc. and you cannot explore beyond the battle torn questing zones. Its a wow clone in that aspect. You cant go two feet without getting ganked off your speeder/mount.

8. Space combat - Fun little mini game but not worth paying 15.00 for. I can pop in my Lego stars game and play the same space combat simulation. This also goes into my exploration complaint. You included space but you cannot explore it.

9. Ships - Just like my companions have the same name as everyone elses' my ship looks just like all the other players too. I need to be able to expand and customize the ship. Make it my own.

10. Legacy - what was supposed to be their added greatness has been nothing but a disappointment. I get to connect my characters to each other on a family tree as Adam Sandler once said "whoopi da due!". All the unlockables are pointless and expensive. In a game that lacks market sure expects everyone to be carrying around millions of creds and than they expect those who don't have the creds to continue to grind it out (boring). I cannot say how ridiculous it is that I marry my companion in storyline but yet I cannot list the companion as a wife but I can be married to another one of my characters. Than on top of that if I marry or have children with a pureblood female why is it that my children never inherit the features of my mate? I know genes can be dominant but common there has to be some character customization to show that a Chiss and a Sith pureblood got it on and produced a child

11. Level 50 - Last but not least the end game content. Once again a game purely focusing on PvP content. Even though there has been massive amounts of data to show that most players are into PvE than PvP they go and ignore that casual non PvPing group. Because they have not corrected all of the cons I have listed there simply is not end game content for the PvE'r. The PvP itself is weak because of the class imbalances (That most games face) as well as the lack of quality players playing the events. Its awefully difficult to beat 4 Inquisitors and 5 Bounty hunters with 3 guardians and 6 smugglers. Empire will win every single time. The queues are weak and because the lack of cross server queueing at this time PvP events are going to be frustrating to no end. Correct the above mentioned and you might be able to save this game from becoming an STO (Star Trek Online) F2P game.

Final thoughts: I have way many more cons than pros but because I am a star wars fan and because I am not quite ready to believe that big developers like EA, Bioware and Lucasarts can fail so miserably. I am not ready to believe that EA who has a great functionality with the SIMs line and Bioware with KOTOR, Mass Effect are just going to ignore what needs to be done. Now I am also a realist that at some point if there is no indication that they are going to hear the cries of many and address the concerns than I will have to cancel my subscript and come to terms that the MMO genre is dead and there will never be a good MMO worth playing.

That's pretty much how I felt about it within a week of playing it. I just do not have the tolerance for poorly developed games.

Games like Mortal Online are the only hope for the genre.  Anyone who hasn't tried it needs to go download the game and give it a shot.  After trying it you will never want to go back to the same old themepark.   The head of the company is a true visionary who is slowly but surely bringing that vision to life.

The faithful shall be rewarded.

I read this randomly and laughed.. Mortal Online is not a good example...

Skyrim is a good example of an RPG...

Maybe a new sandbox game coming out, but not Mortal Online.. Terrible, terrible game.

This is a fairly entertaining game, I would recommend taking a look at it. The item mall is empty at this point, I intend to wait until it is released as closed beta characters will be wiped, naturally.

Controls are responsive, animations and characters are smooth... Intriguing gameplay.

UI is intuitive, and simple, becomes more depthful later on.

Skill system is incredible! Very! Very! Very interesting. Some feel it is overwhelming but honestly I think it is just right there is just a lot there, take a minute to read and examine it. After a couple levels it makes sense, those levels come quickly too. :)

Good luck to them!
